Good on ya! I'm thinking to do the same to escape from all the covid insanity going on in major cities across Australia. but I have no clue where to start. I admire your courage of starting this off grid journey, which is the most important step, and it will lead your dreams to reality. Please keep us posted and best wishes to you guys!

Look into tiny homes. Not so tiny, can get them off grid. That’s what my wife and I are do8ng

My wife and I are doing something similar. Not completely off grid but a lot more self sufficient and away from everyone. Big bush block with a small prebuilt portable home. Our house price has gone up so much Covid may have been a lucky break for us. Great story best of luck

Sounds awesome! Some of those prebuilt portable homes look fantastic and are great for the price. Best of luck to both you and your wife also.

Hubby & I just bought 3 acres in Mannum SA (riverland) overlooking the river Murray, on top of a hill (with NO wind cover) & winds can get to 30km. We are in our early 50's & there is SO much work to do on the land & are striving to retire at 60, we were thinking of shipping container homes, mud brick (WAY out of our price range), earthship (same prob + only 1 built here in SA) & our council is a pain in the rear to deal with as we can't even put up a tool shed until the slab for the house is poured, we will be totally off grid with battery back up as to hook up to "normal elec" would of been $75,000 +, will be having a septic system & 100% rainwater (but have tons river water allowance every year MORE than we will ever use). We will be TRYING to build a medium house around $100,000 (plus all the other things mentioned) as we want to be DEBT FREE but at times it really does seem an impossible task, there is SO much red tape & am constantly worried about is this do-able, would love to leave our jobs & do this NOW but there is no way we can atm. GOOD LUCK with your family's journey as your land looks stunning.

I already live rural with 5 kids. Covid brought city folks to our area & pushed up demand and prices (1.5 hr drive to Sydney CBD). All the big companies are moving in now (maccas dominos KFC etc) I want to move further away😂 be self sufficient.

As per normal when one is young I travelled!! But I woke up to the realisation that I was coming back to nothing!! Work was fine!! I was able too afford life!! Food and bills and so forth!! But working in a dingy dark carpark from 7 am - 3 pm I never saw daylight!! It wasn't until COVID hit...that the idea for living off the grid didn't kick in!! So I've started saving!! I am now 50 years old!! I'm stuck in community housing even though I'm grateful for housing!! But I still want more freedom and choices!! Have I left it too late?? Only time will tell!!

To be honest, even with careful planning and knowledge, off-grid living in the end still doesn't work for everyone and the reality is that is ok. If someone really tried to make it work and it ends up causing more unwanted stress, then people have the right to leave it. My husband and I lived rurally and for us, it was miserable. Although we are happy with each other's company and we don't trust anyone except to trust the Lord (as God advises), we realized that being outdoors wasn't really interesting for either of us, especially when we became homeless. Then it REALLY hit home how much we were isolated. We then realized that we still enjoy being around other people who share our like-minded views. Now here, though, my husband and I share different processes on how to deal with it - my husband prefers small town living (which is fine) but I realized I missed the city and going to the opera, concerts, ballet, theater, eating exotic food that I couldn't grow in my yard, etc. So we decided that it was okay to not be off-grid and we live technically in a small town which has access to the city. Every once in a while, my husband joins me and we get to go to the opera again and we go to dance classes. In fact, while we are working to build our natural house, we realized - why don't we work to build our own dance and music room as well as mini-home stage/theater. It works for us. Those who judge us because its not THEIR way of choosing to build a natural house - well... you ethically do what works for you. If you like being more outdoors and being around animals and in the dirt, go ahead! I have no animosity towards those who like to rough it for themselves. What I don't care for are the self-righteous hypocrites who get mad because our living environment is not what they would do for themselves. In the end of the day, I try to treat those people like God commands and I mind my own business. We don't mandate for everyone to do what works for us. As for those who falsely and hypocritically judge or accuse us, because they either don't agree with our living environment or because we don't fit their ideal of people to be around, then I simply leave those people to God if they decide that they don't like us because we don't fit their ideal way of living. It is their loss. However, if they ever repent and are willing to be friends and come back or if we find rural off-gridders who can also put aside their opinions on where and how our houses will be, then I'm like - Hey! Welcome back, ol' friend! That's cool! No harm, no foul. If we can find some other interests/common ground, then you are welcome to visit and hang out and have a cup of tea and bowl of soup with bread at our table. ^_^ You do what works for you and your family. I don't care if you live in the woods, desert, ocean on a boat, etc. As long as we can respect each other's living environments which work for us, cheers to you!
