first youtube comment ever posted and probably last ngl: i myself am a new mom to a 7m/o girl that has been in such a headspace all weekend through today that witnessing my daughter do literally anything her baby ass does just has me weeping completely neutrally!!! mostly positively!!!! twice an hour on the hour as a parent will do from time to time hearing mike talk very casually yet with such gripping candor about how feels good man it is to just have a good day with his little girl, when everything seems to have a real or perceived tint of rottenness all the time nowadays.... had me in many wet pieces (some might call them drops). i just put my daughter down for a nap and i feel legitimately saved by the notion that other parents (especially ones i admire as people and thinkers generally, ie mr burns here) are out here in the same bad world feeling just as sweet about their lil babies as i do about mine. happy monday, everybody. :'-) please kiss or hug someone today.

"Trump is like Teddy Roosevelt" I recently heard, except he's not. Roosevelt was shot in the chest at point blank range, and then proceeded to continue on with a 90 minute speech which, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is the very definition of badass
@kosmosXcannon
@kosmosXcannon Месяц назад
Yeah Trump isn't on the same level, but at least it does show he is still mentally with it. Wonder how many people would think to do a photo op immediately after barely getting shot at. There is also Andrew Jackson, although he didn't get hit because both guns misfired. He then proceeded to beat his assassin with his cane. Think they had to peel Jackson off him before he killed the guy.

Teddy also didn’t use his families wealth and connections to dodge serving in the military and he certainly could have.

"Angels are just like demons!" Yeah, I guess so. They both have wings. Or are imaginary. Whatever. It's impossible to reliably predict what random feature of the signified concept your audience is going latch onto most tightly. Combating this kind of logic depends not on the audience's willingness to challenge their prejudices, but their EAGERNESS to challenge them. Even sane people are prone to confirmation bias, just because it's the most easily defined reference point.

Tim Hickson, on RU-vid (& Nebula) as Hello Future Me, has a 3-part series of video's titled "How Revolutions Really Work / The Dictator's Dilema", "Why Revolutions are Hard to Write / Revolutions Done Wrong", and "Why Revolutions Fail / The Rebel's Dilema" that examines real and fictional (mostly fictional) revolutions, how they start, and why they often fail through the lense of a writer. Although they are aimed at realistic world building, they offer a good insight into our real world. The 3rd video, "Why Revolutions Fail", seems particularly salient to this live stream in that the violence of revolution doesn't translate into stable power. That deconstructing old regimes is a completely different operation from constructing new ones. Like Micheal said (paraphrasing), successful revolutions end with them dismantling themselves & refocusing their energy on governing.
@WisecrackEDU

The most absurd thing I've seen regarding the current situation, was a US politician pointing out that the US doesn't DO violence, that all advances in US history came from people peacefully protesting and petitioning the government!🤦🤣 Literally NOTHING has come from peaceful protest in the US! Politicians always think they can ignore or postpone needed action until shit gets violent!🤦

Dear @Wisecrack. I have a question: was tRump's attack on the peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square count as "political violence"? Since he only did so to attack protesters and do a 5m photoshoot, and the protesters were doing nothing, is violence inflicted upon peaceful citizens exercising their right to protest considered "political violence"? Or is it ONLY when its targetted AT a politician?

I've gotta be honest, I've been a subscriber and a patreon donor for about a year. These live streams are almost unlistenable when you pause videos every 15 seconds to interject, often times veering away from the topic entirely. It's so hard to pay attention and keep track of what is being said in the videos. I know you like to freeball these streams but a little preproduction would go along way. I almost always stop watching less than half way through out of frustration.
@WisecrackEDU
@WisecrackEDU Месяц назад
I really REALLY appreciate you being a subscriber and a Patreon donor, both of those things help so much. I'm sorry you don't dig the vibe of the streams. Some folks really like it, but I totally get why others wouldn't. If it's bumming you out maybe the best move is to just not listen to these? I think especially because today was actually relatively structured that if you were still hating it you likely always will. We're starting some podcasts/streams back up when we launch our second channel this fall where we'll be talking about movies/shows, so maybe one of those will fit your vibe better. Either way - thanks for your support and your honesty.

"Attempted assasination was not political violence".. ummm not sure you have a clear eyed veiw on this one. You not liking that other things are not classified as such disnt nean that this obvioulsly violent political attack wasnt like wtf.
@WisecrackEDU
@WisecrackEDU Месяц назад
My point was that, at least at this time, there is no sense that it was at attempt made with any political aim or by someone affiliated with any political group, party, state, etc. When Hinckley tried to assassinate Reagan, it wasn't an act of political violence, the dude was trying to get the attention of Jodie Foster. That doesn't mean that it's not a violent act, simply that just because someone attempts violence on a political figure doesn't mean that act is inherently political violence. And the reason this seems important is that it takes the force away from understanding actual instances of political violence occurring in the world.
@themasterofinfinity
@themasterofinfinity Месяц назад

how are you going to say that the attempted assassination of trump isn't political violence while looking at a Wikipedia page that directly uses targeted assassinations as an example of political violence? What point is being made by separating political assassination from the larger tapestry of political violence?
@WisecrackEDU
@WisecrackEDU Месяц назад
the distinction would be targeted state assassinations, which we talked about at good length in the stream so . . .
@charleslonon9207
@charleslonon9207 Месяц назад
@@WisecrackEDU I heard you make the point that state assassinations are different from Individual assassinations and that's fine but they only seem different in terms of scale and power dynamic. To me the point of the word political violence is to talk about the purpose of the violence. why would they both not be political violence? To me this definition becomes more interesting when we talk about daily police action. Police are quite literally an arm of the state and act in the States interest and they perpetuate violence against citizens every day but we don't necessarily think of that as political violence but that would fit the definition of the Wikipedia page. edit: With the context of watching the full stream, I still don't see the point of the distinction especially because it seems like we agree that the blanket condemnation of political violence is used as a means of control of acceptable political actions.

I think I should like Arendt, but to me her insights about violence didn't make any sense, at least not in the way they were described in the video. Surely violence is undertaken for many different reasons in different contexts. There are often cases where a desperate regime will resort to violence when it feels its power slipping away - granted. But there are just as many cases where a well-established regime uses violence as a normal part of maintaining dominance. The CIA didn't hire organized criminals to murder communists in Europe in the 70s because the USA felt its power declining. On the contrary, they used this violence to expand their power, suppress dissent, and harm their perceived enemies. They used violence BECAUSE they had political power. Maybe a more in-depth examination of Arendt's ideas on this subject would reveal a more nuanced understanding, but on their face, Arendt's ideas on violence seem incoherent. The notion that political power exists only in the absence of violence seems to contradict everything we know about politics.

Not only is it out of touch with the general state of things, constantly bringing up political violence backed by the US, almost feel forced (yeah sure, but how many superpower nations don't do political violence). This point is almost moot. It's like someone choked on tap water and you discussing about tap water isn't H2O. Of all the topics you could talk about, this is possibly the worst one.
