As an ex Tyre Engineer it breaks my heart when I see some of the horrors that get fitted to vehicles. Matt, not many will realise how important your approach to tyres is, I recognise and applaud you! I'm also heartened by the comments from others here. There's much more to tyres than "Black, Round, Rolls on the Ground"!

great to see a dealer doing this. personally found the hard way that budgets dont pay. dont last as long, noiser, worse performance in all metrics. yes paying £400-500 for the set is a lot but overall im probably gaining back the time visiting a tyre garage and overall probably a little better off in fuel economy too.

When my Leaf 24kw needed new tires due to cracking rubber I went for Michelin Cross Climate plus for both rear tires. The difference in traction is amazing. I know I "lost" a few miles in range but still get 86 mile on the GOM so who know either way? Absolutely great tires for our wet Northern Ireland weather.

Putting low grade tyres, wherever they are made, makes no sense, they are all that stick you to the road. I tend to follow those already on the car from new or the successor type. It's good to see a dealer that cares about more than simple profit.

i got myself a 2016 Kia Soul EV back in September fitted with 4 brand new kumho tires (china all the way), I did not wait too long and ordered brand new Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tires as in Ireland it rains a lot and them tires have absolute excellent grip in wet, I highly recommend!
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 3 года назад
Kumho tyres are South Korean,, not Chinese, which is why Hyundai and Kia cars are fitted with them. Also some European brands use them now too. I have a feeling that some Mercedes models have Kumho tyres from the factory. They are generally a good tyre. But as always, its not the brand that dictates the tyre properties, its the model. I made another tyre video here which goes into this in more detail ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0BSYv5YlRC8.html

Uniroyal tyres are great in the wet but thats all they've got going for them. The dry performance is abysmal given the price and not actually much better than some of the budgets out there. I'd get a proper tyre that is only slightly worse in the wet and still brilliant in the dry for a proper all round performance, Continental, Michellin, Bridgestone and Goodyear all have far better offerings. Still props to you for not using total crap budget tyres.

Nothing worse than a car fitted with ditch finder tyres especially when a mid range tyre is £10-£15 more and 10x better, for me though I'll spend the extra £30-£40 and have premiums. Props to you as a dealer for making sure your cars have decent tyres fitted.

Good decision, can’t put a price on safety. There seems to be too much emphasis on economy and noise with EV tyres. Braking performance should be the first consideration in a tyre above anything else. Tyres are the only thing between the car and the road, why cheap out?!

@gravemind6536 Год назад
I avoid tyres that have being green/Eco as their main selling point they sacrifice a little too much for that extra 0.5mpg or extra few miles range.
@markgaudie80
@markgaudie80 3 года назад
Another one that baffles me is when people put part warm tyres on. They could be plugged any anything even though the tyre tread looks ok. I’ve put Goodyear Efficient grip on my Leaf and Michelin Primacy 4 on my Outlander PHEV. Both tyres are 68db and rated very highly for grip and efficiency.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 3 года назад
Warm tyres are good :-) There's a reason why F1 cars have them! Generally I would agree about worn tyres. There's a reason why a worn has ended up back in the trade. No one changes tyres without a reason. So maybe they are off crashed cars and would probably have a flat spot due to the skid before the crash! But then on the other hand, then when you buy a second hand vehicle it has worn tyres and you don't generally replace them until they are worn. I wouldn't worry about plugs if they are done correctly. I will send these Chinese tyres off to the recycler along with all the worn out tyres and I suspect they will be picked out and sold as they are still like new.

I used Toyos exclusively for several years on 2 cars. Over those years I had regular issues with blistered sidewalls. I have never had a blistered sidewall on any other tyre brand. I wouldn't buy another Toyo, ever again.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 3 года назад
Manufacturer's make different tyre models with different characteristics and properties, so it would be wrong to say all Toyo tyres did this. For example, the Michelin Energy EV tyres fitted to the Zoe are appalling (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HCY4Jl2lsZg.html), but many of their other models are amongst the best. I used Toyo NanoEnergy tyres on my Zoe for two years and they were faultless. I also find Toyo tyres always balance better than others (if fitted properly) and have fitted 50+ now. But then we can all only be led my our own experiences.

Evergreen is a UK name to 'hide' the fact that these are just another budget Chinese tyre. They're made by Shandong Jinyu Tire Company. I'm not saying they're no good. I made a video on them..see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HCY4Jl2lsZg.html So sometimes, even these manufacturer's can cock up and make appalling tyre models.

The issue at hand is not the manufacturing location of the tire, but rather the desired cost that you are willing to allocate for your tire. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys.

If you buy a 'top spec.' car model it often has larger diameter wheels,i.e.Top Zoe has 17 inch, is it legal to later fit dealer supplied smaller wheels with a larger aspect ratio for economy and quieter ride? Is there something to do with congestion zones and the V5 rating?

No, as long as the new wheel/tyre combo is the correct specification. If you fit genuine OEM alloy wheels, but of a smaller size, then I wouldn't even let the insurer know. But if you fit a an aftermarket wheel, then you should inform your insurer.

@amaguri8446

@@GoGreenAutos Probably due to the reason that Conti and Hankook etc also have manufacturing based in China so fewer logistics cost, hence the price can drop further into the budget brand range. My mum who still lives in Shanghai had her mini's tyre changed to Pirelli P7 C2 earlier this year, which cost her 400 yuan each, so roughly 55 quid. And the labour was like, free. There's not a chance I can get such a cheap quote from Halfords or Kwikfit here.

Sadly, the majority of people don't seem to value the quality of the tyres on their vehicles and just go with the cheapest. As always in life, you get what you pay for. Tyres are so crucial. Just a metre less in stopping distance can be the difference between a close shave, a huge accident repair bill or even death.

Get rid of the Chinese tires good what about LRR that should be equally as important ? Not good to put a new tire on there if it's not really proper for an electric vehicle. So weird how you see this a racism. I'm only taking about a rubber tyre, not people! Its a fact that some of the Chinese budget tyres are poor performing or poor quality tyres compared to others. In life, you generally get what you pay for and these tyres are exactly this. Buy the cheapest - you get poor tyres. Its as simple as that. True, there could well be excellent Chinese made tyres, but the reality is that they don't make it to British shores. The Chinese tyres are here as the budget option and because of that, they are generally pretty poor. I am speaking from experience here....unlike yourself obviously.
@richij

@@GoGreenAutos it's not racist. It's xenophobic. I got that wrong, which is why I've edited my comment. You were very clear in your video that you dislike "Chinese tyres."
