Hi everyone! Welcome back to The Minimalist Fam! Have you ever thought about sleeping on a Japanese futon? In this video my family and I talk about what it is like to sleep on a Japanese mattress after using one for almost a year. We talk about the things we really like and some of the things we do not like. Overall, we think that they are a great option for a bed.

I was sleeping on a mattress on my floor. I had hurt my SI joint thinking that sleeping on a mattress would help. I just discarded my mattress and sleeping on a mattress topper for now until my Japanese Futon arrives. My SI joint is improving with one night of floor sleeping. Just wow! Thank you for sharing your video. It no doubt confirms my thoughts on floor sleeping. ☺️

I love seeing your floorsleeping set-up! I've been a floor sleeper most of my life, I adore it! Thank you for providing links to your beds, at some point, I will need to change out my floor bedding, and I am collecting options to make my decision. Thank you for sharing your experiences! Hi, I've never been a floor sleeper and I'm trying to work this through. I'm not a young person, so I don't want something super-thin I'm wondering about doing two lighter-weight one's instead of one big heavy futon? Have you done this or know anybody who has? Also the difference between cotton and cotton and wool futon? Thank you

You ever wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and have to stand all the way up? All the blood rushes to your feet and you suddenly feel very awake. Try going back to sleep after that its difficult. I know this because I slept on a futon on the floor for all 4 years of college.

Back in NYC in our former apartment there was not much floorspace. Hubby Ric was then in the merchant marine. So we were both used to small spaced sleeping areas. Thus cozy rest, with compactness were the two main factors. Well, now we are retired and live in New Orleans. Our place here is three x larger than the one in NY. But guess what? We STILL sleep on futons because we've grown used to the lovely comfort and, that snuggly feeling. We have plenty of room for traditional beds. But don't want 'em!!!

My husband and I are using a blow up mattress, at first I wanted a bed but now I haven’t felt the need to get one. My absolute favorite thing is sleeping in the living room with a sleeping bag, the coziest feeling ever. I can see myself sleeping with a futon, we have carpet too. I have scoliosis, some pain in my knees and still I don’t mind. Thanks for sharing your experience ☺️

Yes, the carpet would definitely help better then solid. If you do get a Japanese futon, or if you stay in your sleeping bag, I heard a mattress topper or a tatami mat works wonders. My cat pissed on my mattress in which I’ve been sleeping on the floor but my back still hurts. I ended up buying a Japanese futon mattress. I hope it helps.

Have you ever tried using the flat sheet instead of the fitted sheet to cover it? You could just fold the excess underneath and then you wouldn't have the "bubbles." Just a thought.

@@TheMinimalistFam Just received it and slept on it for my first time. Initial feeling is mixed - I slept on it (on top of a hardwood solid bedframe, moving the original bed out of the way to try it) before the recommended 3 day full inflation period (just one day in), where its thickness appears to be about 2.1 inches or so. I successfully fell asleep on it, but found myself wishing it was perhaps 1 inch thicker. There's a few boney parts in my body that'd get pinched a bit if I rolled around, and initially my lower back felt arched and it was difficult, but otherwise it wasn't any less comfortable than a foam mattress. When I woke up today, said lower back was oddly well aligned compared to usual, making walking strangely easy, but my shoulders and arms ached a bit. I think I should find either some sort of thick rug or some other form of light padding underneath it to really get it to my tastes. The new place I'll be moving to in a week is going to have hardwood floors so I used the hardwood bedframe as something of a test. Do you have any recommendations on that? In the video you mentioned you added another pad - any recommendations? Proper thick tatami seems to be too expensive, so I've been staring at everything from polypropylene outdoor rugs to the foam squares meant for kids or wrestling rings.

I wish I didn’t have carpet. I hate it. I have a tatami mat and futon like yours that I sleep on. It is very comfortable for me. I did buy two of the correct covers for mine. They are zip on covers which are a perfect fit. You just have to make sure you don’t put the cover in the dryer so it won’t shrink as it’s 100% cotton.

Hi, I think they are stuffed with polyester blend. They were not think enough for a hardwood floor so I put another mat under them. When they are on carpet, they are fine on their own. I hope this helps :)
@sheilahiggins6427

Just wondering what you put under yours for extra comfort? I just bought a traditional futon and it’s a bit hard for me as a side sleeper. Ours was expensive as we are in Australia and it came from traditional makers in Japan. One option would be to buy a second one but at $800 for a queen I’m not keen to do that.
@TheMinimalistFam
@TheMinimalistFam 2 года назад
Currently we have carpet in our new place so the floor is soft enough that we don’t need to put anything under it, but when we had wood floors we bought some less expensive floor/lounge pillows from Target and put those underneath. You could probably find a less expensive one on Amazon to put under them or a fluffy blanket?
@sheilahiggins6427
@sheilahiggins6427 2 года назад
@Megan Raj yes that’s where we purchased ours too! I bought a latex pad from ikea but I’d prefer not to use products like that for sleeping. What I’d love to do is go to Japan, sleep on a bunch of different futons and ask for recommendations and brands and ship something home!!! My husband has had back surgery and he loves it. I wish I’d bought two singles and gone full traditional style instead of the queen size.
