The problem with batteries has to do with the density of energy that can be stored. Even the most modern batteries are heavy but carry little energy relative to gasoline or jet fuel tanks.

I agree with u BUT, everything that those plans need to be completed do exist in 2022, THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT: EVERY other airline, investors, companies, politicians, and all the others, Philthy Rich people in the world won't allow it to happen or come to life. Bcuz all of them will be losing money big time, so they will fight down the battery idea, make sure every news station an reporter continuously talk about it and convince the public that it's a threat to human life. NIKOLA TESLA TOWER for example: It was created an proven fully functional, he just needed the funding witch he didn't receive BCUZ the tower was capable of sending direct current to your home with a special isolated antenna. And it would of been free to the world. A week after he demonstration to the government he died, the government went straight to his home and took every single piece of information even his pocketbook and pocket watch that his wife had for him. UP TO THIS DAY the tower was never found or talked about. We have the technology, understanding and components to create futuristic Technologies BŰT, the money hunger people of every country won't allow us to fully evaluate bcuz most of the minerals and other materials won't be needed anymore and that's bad for their business.

Not only that, but one of the most important aspects of commercial aircraft is that they burn off significant amounts of their weight as they fly, as the fuel being used up means that the airplane gets more efficient as it flies. This would be completely lacking in an electric plane.

The other thing being totally overlooked is recharge time. You can refuel a aircraft relatively fast, but even a small battery takes hours to charge. That is a lot of time on the tarmac. Even if you did something like a swappable battery bank - charge offline while the other one flies - you increase cost on battery by three; one at takeoff, one at landing, and one in flight.
@jac1207
@jac1207 2 года назад
Not to mention you have to now transport all those heavy used batteries back and forth to processing facilities, that's going to put more trips on those trucks hauling the batteries and those trucks will have to recharge their battery packs more often as well. Now we're only talking about 1 truck service to 1 airport, we haven't even factored in literally everything else. So where are we going to get all that electricity? Because it takes A LOT of solar and wind farms to generate what we use TODAY, and even then they're not enough without hydro/nuclear/coal/gas to pick up the slack. What energy production are we going to ride a nation that'll be using 80%+ EV society on to? Nevermind our aging energy infrastructure in the US, we don't even know how we'll power an EV future.

I get where you're coming from, but the difference is that an aircraft like any vehicle is serviced regularly, and have multiple sensors, backup systems and circuitry that can disconnect power or give early warning in case an error is detected, this is not the case with passenger items. In-fact you can fly large batteries with the correct paperwork, and its easier to do so if the battery is new, tested, and low in charge. Just hard to regulate for commercial flights.

Jet engines can be powered through nuclear fission but since it is harmful for the environment, it is not done. As for fusion, no technology has been invented to utilize the energy from nuclear fusion. Some rockets with nuclear fission as their source of energy have already been developed since nuclear waste in space is not harmful. But those rockets utilize some other safer energy sources when inside the atmosphere and those fission powered engines are activated only after it is far enough from the earth.

Exactly. If people want to have Renewable and Environmentally-Safe Air travel the solution is Hydrogen. Use solar panels to split sea water into pure Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Excess. Transport the Hydrogen Fuel with electric cars. Use modern-hybrid engine, so that the aircraft will have H2O emission, and a decent range. Sure it is weaker than a standard engine, and less efficient than battery, but the upside is that it works and is appropriate tool for this task. It may not be appropriate for all types of aircraft, like the super-large planes and military applications... but it can certainly replace the majority (80%) of planes out there and make a significant reduction to our emissions and reduce our reliance on a non-renewable fuel source. And yes, I know how ironic it sounds to recommend Hydrogen when we saw what happened with the Hindenburg Disaster.

I like how people are complaining that we can't make a 100% jump to electric power when the Prius exists. Isn't a lot of the fuel wasted during takeoff? Compared to the rest of the flight, taking off uses the largest amount of fuel per distance traveled. So, if there is some sort of way to hybridize turbo props, you can switch to hybrid power for takeoff. And the propellers can potentially spin an alternator that allows for the hybrid battery to recharge mid-flight. If the system works out, turbo props could be the future.

Fundamentally the issue is energy density and the necessity that batteries will be self reactivate. That being anything you would consider to be a battery will react within itself, as opposed to jet fuel that can only react on the surface and in the presence of oxygen. This just means that the more energy density you squeeze into a battery, even with a new design, the more it will tend to be explosive. Honestly I think that a better approach would be building them to run on renewable hydrocarbon sources. Much more practical.

Fuel to do the heavy lifting and emergency power and pure electric to sustain flight at altitude … a hydrogen fuel engine would run clean and its fuel being lighter than Air could help compensate for weight in the Aircraft . I haven’t heard of any such developments as everyone is focused on pure electric aircraft …

A two engine plane must be able to fly to certain parameters with one engine out, and having the engines on the wingtips means there will be a huge yawing force if an engine goes. Lots of major problems that need to overcome. Power density per kilogram is way to low currently and currenr lithium battery technology loses significant efficiency in cold temperatures and when you fly at altitude, there are very cold temperatures. Up at 30K feet where commercial airliners fly the temps are far below zero Fahrenheit. Lithium batteries lose a huge amount of specific power at those temps, if they can even function at all.

Feel like if it’s less than 500 miles and you’re not going over a sea or ocean, wouldn’t it make more sense to have electric hyper speed trains? Would be able to fit way more passengers, more leg room, you can move around, maybe a bar carriage, a movie theatre carriage, a gym carriage etc etc

NIMBY is a big expense when it comes to trains. Lots of real estate purchases without eminent domain. Might need to frame it in terms of military strategy or national security to gain traction.

Jet fuel is much less efficient than battery electric so it doesn't need to match 12,000 for the same range. You can get electric densities of this level with metal fuel cells, but the weight increases and you need a way of dumping the "exhaust", but it could be collected and recycled with a little effort.

A factor of 48 improvement in battery storage seems extremely doable considering what we've seen humans do
