When I was a kid and teenager growing up in Southern California, we would go to Disneyland several times a year. Tomorrowland was the premier place to hang out. Now it reminds me of one of the dilapidated 1980's era malls around the country that may still be open, but half the stores are vacant or selling junk. Not tons of energy in Tomorrowland and what there is dosnt really fit. Also thanks David, Liz, and Sophie for stopping for a photo with my family on your family day last week. It made our day.

For the new Disneyland Tomorrowland, I would love to see, somewhere in the land, a hologram of Walt greeting and waving to guests as they walk by. We all know that Walt lived in the future. It makes sense that he should have a spark of life in a reimagined Tomorrowland. (see what I did there?)

Space Mountain is Sacred Holy Ground to me. It shall not be touched. Put up 30 foot scrims and raze the rest. Well maybe not the lagoon. But make a corridor from the entrance to Tomorrowland all the way the entrance of Space Mountain. And Bring Back The PEOPLEMOVER!

🙌🙏 I'm a star tours lover too! I think it's a great ride that can easily forever be updated with the new movies and shows. It honestly shows everything wrong with the millennium falcon ride. We've had star tours giving us this many options for years and the millennium falcon ride is the same thing every time? Meh.

I’m old enough to remember 1967 Tomorrowland when it opened, and I loved many (but not all) of the attractions it had - even Adventure Thru Inner Space was a long-time favorite of mine. A "new" Tomorrowland that turns it back into retro 'Tomorrowland of Walt's Imagination' seems most likely. That's where it looks like the Imagineers were headed with the new TL entrance. It solves the problem of TL quickly becoming outdated. Retro TL piggybacks on our local Disneyland nostalgia. And let's be honest it's a lot cheaper to turn it into retro TL than completely bulldoze it and build fresh. Bring it back to the 67 TL with some 80s fun and some more neon. I know they have to tear down and rebuild the track but a People Mover 2.0 would be great. Would love Carousel of Progress to come back home but doubt Disney World would give it up. I'm hoping for a D23 announcement!

I'm so very happy, that I got to experience the Tomorrowland of the 1960's and '70's, as a small child and as a teen. As I currently walk through Tomorrowland in 2022... I get sad and teary eyed, thinking about the People Mover, Carrousel of Progress, the original Rocket Jets way up high, the Skyway, original Submarine Ride, Adventures Through Inner Space, Rocket Mission To The Moon etc., now long gone and greatly missed... Is it just me, or does it make anyone else extremely happy and smile, just to look at what's left of the People Mover track, and what once was, when Tomorrowland was MAGICAL? I love Space Mountain. It's a historical landmark. Don't change it. Maybe bring the back the original Space Mountain entrance escalator, though. And the stage with entertainment. Thumbs UP on Autopia...

The problem isn't that Tomorrowland hasn't been updated--the problem is that portions of it have been! Every area is a different age and design aesthetic, making it seem mismatched and directionless. At this point, I would be fine with just about anything, as long as it was complete, cohesive, and uniform.

“Stepping into the future”. What does our future look like? That is what I think the imagineers need to really think about when imagining what Tomorrow Land would look like. If that means taking town every ride and re-imagining the entire land. Then I say let them start imagining. I would love to see what they would come up with.

The thing that I miss most about tomorrow land is that it moved away from a science and industry theme. The Tomorrowland I want is less about specific technology and more about scientific concepts (energy, space travel, environment, etc) that can get young minds excited.
@RyanHicks306
@RyanHicks306 2 года назад
I would also add maybe "we" are part of the problem. The nostalgia we hold onto, maybe that prevents Disney from being bold and creating something like a new Tomorrowland? I would love a new Tomorrowland that is vibrant and forward thinking rather than a trip down memory lane.

So True! Can you imagine an actual Tomorrowland from 2022 as the starting point! A Tomorrowland that showcases AI technology, Renewable natural energy, an updated version of what is the current Mission to Mars, as well as everything up and coming. Have current companies who are already implementing this showcase and be a part of the New Tomorrowland! - Of course, we will get a lot of pushback from the diehard fans, but who are we creating this for anyway? Tomorrowland is for the future!

I think another problem is that people are different today. Walt was an optimist, a big bright beautiful tomorrow. I’m afraid a “modern” Tomorrowland would be doom and glum. A showcase of man’s destruction of the planet. I want to feel good at Disneyland.

Imagine a 1975 Tomorrowland with today’s technology. Tomorrowland in 1975 is my fondest memory of all the lands. Adventure through inner space, Circle vision 360, The people mover, Rocket Jets, Mission to Mars, Skyway to Fantasyland, Submarine Voyage, The Monorail, The Tomorrowland stage, America Sings and Tomorrowland Autopia. It truly was a land on the move.
@SoCalMan13
@SoCalMan13 2 года назад
I’d challenge anyone to say that short of Space Mountain, the rest of Tomorrowland could be leveled, including the former Magic Eye Theater, and start anew. Star Tours and Buzz are out of place with Galaxy’s Edge and Pixar Pier. The Mission to Mars building and America Sings can be leveled, as well as Autopia and Subs, leaving vast real estate for Imagineering to redesign, with a new Peoplemover hub, one or two new non-TRON e-tickets, rockets above the Peoplemover station. Add in a couple of C and D attractions as well. While nostalgia is a wonderful thing, Pressler and Eisner ruined Tomorrowland. Best to start with a blank slate, as the only redeeming aspect today is Space Mountain, especially since the retrack.

It's far more likely that the majority of the land gets used for Fantasyland expansion. The only remaining parts of Tomorrowland would likely be the Space Mountain/Star Tours side. Disney needs IP food/merch to make the project pencil out financially.
@oblivieon1567
@oblivieon1567 2 года назад
It does feel Disney has never really figured out what to do with Tomorrowland since the 90s. It's probably time to start with a blank slate. Nemo, Buzz, and Star Tours no longer make sense. Since Eisner painted everything gold hoping for a cheap Jules Verne look that didn't work and Disney later painted things white again it's now a mix of Cheap Jules Verne / Neo Futuristic. I love the Jules Verne look but they'd need to commit to it to pull it off. But at this point the Neo Futuristic look would also work. Autopia is gigantic because Disneyland originally had two and they combined them. Keeping one and using the land from the other could work. The buildings might be ok and the People Mover could return. I don't think the lagoon needs to go but it doesn't necessarily need to be subs either, maybe boats? But for some sort of boat / sub dark ride. Bottom line there's a ton of wasted space there that needs to be figured out. Unfortunately we all know what they're gonna do if they do anything at all. They're gonna just IP the crap out of the land and turn it into a Disney Merchandise Mall.
@TheOwlCreek

I know I'm in the minority when I say this but I would bulldoze the entire land except Space Mountain and the Monorail. I would move Astro Orbiter to the back of the land and put a new entrance sign in its place. I would build a new Lagoon and make a new attraction similar to Aquatopia at Tokyo DisneySea. Then I would build some kind if new skyway system to get people around the land for the whole family to enjoy! Also change the name of the Land. Not every section of the park has to have 'Land' in the title. It can be like "Scifi City" or "Syfy City" something to that nature. I also think it would look cool if there were large Redwood Trees next to a futuristic landscape.

It should have been updated, and yes I rode it all up to the Rocket Ride version. Adventure through Inner Space I still miss to this day. Most parts of Tomorrow Land are such a waste. David, the skyway was a death trap waiting to happen. I was on it last on a grad night. It had to be updated. I say all this as someone who has adored the park my entire life. They can’t. That’s why a “retro” remodel makes more sense. Disneyland has placed Profits before people and the decaying park shows that. Let's be clear I'm a long time Disneyland lover but when 30 to 40% of the rides have been closed it makes me feel less in love with the park. Some of the attractions that have been closed are because Disneyland doesn't have merchidicing connected to the exit areas like the people mover. She continued to say that nobody really used it. I hadn’t been to DL since 1992 (I was 9 at the time) and hearing her derogating something I had dreamed about riding again for over 20 years was disheartening. I hope this isn’t a continued or shared feeling amongst CMs or Imagineers. It’s a mentality that would keep Tomorrowland from being updated.

I've always felt that, instead of predicting a realistic future that all too quickly becomes the present, Tomorrowland should reflect a fantasy, Jetsons style future. Space Mountain may just be a roller coaster, but what sells it is the story that you're in a rocket flying through space. Star Tours is similar, a simulator with the story that you're flying through adventures in the Star Wars universe. My biggest things I'd do if I could would be to return the Peoplemover and replace Autopia with the Tron Lightcycle Run. Just my two cents.

I couldn’t agree with you more Dave. A return to the old Tomorrowland sounds much more appealing than the prospect of a shiny new one. There’s something about the vintage modernism that is so appealing

A lot of good comments and perspectives on this video. I agree with the majority of what other people have already said. Our nostalgia IS something that is preventing imagineers from being bold. I’m Gen X as well, and in growing up with and remembering the same Tomorrowland that you remember, what amazed me MOST about Tomorrowland is that it lived up to its namesake. Technologically speaking, we’ve simply outgrown it. We need a new Tomorrowland that embodies a better tomorrow, starting today. I remember thinking that the creation of Galaxy’s Edge would ignite the re-imagining of Tomorrowland, but MAN was I wrong. I thought they were going to run with having Star Wars attractions merge with the new land, keep the house of tomorrow attraction along with the temporary Marvel expansion, or at the very least build a better Marvel attraction right there in Tomorrowland instead of in DCA like they ended up doing. However, the argument could be made that since the re-skin of Tower of Terror, the removal of Bug’s Land was imminent if not long overdue. Do I want the SkyWay back? Absolutely. Was I looking forward to that new PeopleMover that only lasted a few days? Of course. Do I see Autopia and other areas of Tomorrowland as a giant waste of space? God yes. But that doesn’t mean I want Autopia gone. Hell, I still want the boat version of Autopia back. What if by re-imagining that entire area, including the Submarine Voyage, they were able to keep Autopia, bring back the boats, and the PeopleMover, and the SkyWay. The current attractions don’t necessarily need to disappear, but maybe find a better home. Why not move BuzzLightyear over to Pixar Pier somewhere? Get rid of the old Captain EO theater and make that the new Starcade with the old Space Mountain walkway right in front of it. Or make the current Starcade Flynn’s Arcade from Tron like they had in DCA at the release of Tron Legacy. That was probably one of the best pop-up attractions ever! I mean, I can’t even turn off all the great ideas and possibilities that exist in trying to re-imagine Tomorrowland. There’s no reason why it can’t be both retro AND cutting edge. Make Autopia all electric. Bring back Innoventions in a way that doesn’t suck with real-life in-home technologies that may already exist but that not everyone has access to. Showcase artificial intelligence. Recruit other businesses as sponsors, like when they had the Honda robot. What about other robotics companies? Solar energy? Wind? Hydroelectric turbines? That’s what made the original Tomorrowland seem futuristic. It had concepts that weren’t commonly found in modern homes. It had things that the outside world and no other land had. That’s why I loved going there. It transported me into a world I wanted to see become a reality.

Tomorrowland in the late 80s early 90s, with the neon everywhere, the motion of the monorail, the people mover, Captain EO and American Sings, plus the live music bands at the Tomorrowland Terrace was a vibrant amazing place to be as a teenager. I'd love to see the walls and ceiling become all LED like Fremont Street in Las Vegas. Half of Tomorrowland sits empty now.

Don't care how they fix it. Knock things down and build something totally new, or come back in and restore the rides that we loved and missed. Either way, today's "Tomorrowland" is depressing and feels broken and unloved and un-cared for. It's time to bring it back in full glory one way or another.

“Star Tours” does NOT suck. In fact, I would argue that it’s a better attraction than “Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run”.

The old Tomorrowland was my favorite when I was a kid in the 60s. I rode all of the attractions there frequently, and still miss all of them every time we’re there. Except for the monorail there’s no rides left in Tomorrowland for us as seniors, so our last trip a week ago we never even went to Tomorrowland. I wish some of it at least would come back, like People Mover, Skyway, the Rocket Ships way up high, and one of the former shows in the Launch Bay building, but realistically I know it won’t happen. Sad. 😕

I'd love to see Tomorrowland rethemed in the style of solarpunk- a hypothetical future of a truly better tomorrow, perhaps centuries from now, when we've resolved all our most pressing problems (such as climate change). As a kid of the 90s, I have no real attachment to the remnants of attractions in Tomorrowland. The PeopleMover tracks should be demolished, as should the old Carousel of Progress building, which hasn't hosted anything decent since Innoventions closed in 2015. Tomorrowland should be about a possible tomorrow- not trying to recapture a land which hasn't existed for 60 years. I strongly feel that any redo of Tomorrowland should *not* try to recreate the Tomorrowland of the 1960s- that would make this part of the park Historyland. I know a lot of people will disagree, but I also think Autopia should be demolished. Although being an opening day attraction, it takes up about half the land area of Tomorrowland, and Autopia is not a futuristic attraction. Driving on highways may have been exotic in the 1950s. In the 2020s, not so much. I really do enjoy Star Tours so would like it to stay. But getting rid of the PeopleMover, the Carousel building, and autopia would provide the space for a considerable expansion of the park. The space for Autopia alone could fit something like the New Fantasyland over at the Magic Kingdom, and which I think would be a much better use of space.

As I am about to enter my 70’s, I have to say that a RETRO Tomorrow land is the ONE THING I DON’T want to see. That would be boring to the upcoming generations who are Disney’s future. As a young girl, I loved the way it was, but it was about MY future. I would LOVE to see it be about things like a Martian Colony, a Lunar Technology Lab, mankind interacting with a non-human species that it encounters, etc. I want to see my Grandkids inspired to be part of THAT future, not what WAS, but what WILL BE! Star Trek inspired many to enter futuristic oriented career paths, even the Space Program itself. When my Granddaughter asked for NASA stuff for Christmas, and my Grandson said he wants to see the Houston Space Center as part of his HS Graduation present, I felt so proud of where their career visions are going!

My first trip to Disneyland was in 1971 and the rides I remember the most were, Journey Through Inner Space, Flight to the Moon, People Mover, the Skyway and Carousel of Progress! Those rides made a big impression on me, and since they aren’t bringing them back then I say let’s get something new. But I want a fully thought out idea, not more bandaids!

Mission to Mars, Inner space, SkyWay, People Mover, Space Mountain, Elevated Rocket Jets, and the Submarines were all great story centric attractions that just seem to fit with one another - taking away one adversely effected the others. Dumping Autopia and Launch Bay, in place of a reimagined 20,000 Leagues Submarine, overlapping Tron, slightly tweaked Space Mountain, revitalized People Mover, with elevated Rocket Jets, and returned Gondola would be a dream come true, for me.

The Disneyland PeopleMover is my favorite ride I've never been on. I don't know what it is about it. The super 70's soundtrack really does it for me! I of course love Space Mountain as well -- it's probably my favorite operating ride at Disneyland, so the thought of replacing it is a bit tough. There are certain things Disney could improve within the existing buildings if they wanted to. I sincerely wish there were a way to rebuild the existing PeopleMover tracks but it's clear they don't want to spend the money developing it.

I'm a boomer! I remember riding the sky ride, the rockets that were on top of the people mover. The people mover itself, carousel of progress, Rocket to the Moon. I even remember riding the little boat ride they used to have that is now Fantasia Gardens. They really need to tear down everything east of the parade route up to main street. That includes the Matterhorn and rebuild completely. New Matterhorn and Space Mountain. They have plenty of room for some amazing things. They just need to do it.

Those attractions aren't coming back. Just changing some paint etc. isn't going to make it that different from what it is now. It needs new modern attractions. A new Tomorrowland needs to focus on our modern outlook on Tomorrow, which isn't quite as dandy as it was in the 60s. Some of it can be about modern technology, but it also needs to highlight some issues of our planet like global warming, modern transportation etc. The Star Wars and Pixar stuff needs to go. They could incorporate Wall-e a bit but thats a bit of an older IP that I wouldn't expect them to use.

@@disnyqueen5511 YES!! Wouldn’t that be AMAZING?!! Can you imagine going on the Frozen ride at Christmas time?! Wow! There are just certain rides like “ Mr. Toads Wild Adventure” that although they are considered “classic” just don’t hold up to how SPECTACULAR rides like “ Frozen” and “ Beauty and the Beast” are, that they have done for other Disney parks. It would be great to see some of these new amazing rides at Disneyland replacing rides that have maybe seen better days.

Well I love the older classic rides and classic Disney i do believe some rides need to go and be redone because they are not classics that have stood the test of time. Autopia is a waste of space and all of tomorrowland is if they dont make it retro then do newer rides like beauty and the beast frozen snow white mine train would be cool. But definitely beauty and the beast and frozen they are so beautiful

However, I empathize with people who don’t want it gone because of my attachment and missing People Mover, Inner Space, Rocket to the Moon, America Sings and Skyway. I would be so thrilled to have an updated retro Tomorrowland!!! I do love Autopia and would love for it to stay, update to environmentally friendly, and have decorations for different times of year.
