Ever wondered what Seasonal Affective Disorder actually is? Or if it’s even a real thing? What causes it? Kate tackles sudden changes in hormones and light intensity in an attempt to explain why winter makes you SAD.

It’s perfectly natural for people to unwind and perk up at the beginning of summer as the appearance of the sun marks the end of a dark and gloomy winter. However for some people changing seasons can have such significant impacts on their mood that they are said to be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, otherwise known as SAD.
SAD involves the effects of depression either developing or worsening during the wintertime and it is believed to be in part stimulated by the change in light intensity as the number of daylight hours decreases in the colder months. This is due to the change in the environment causing an imbalance in the hormones that control your mood. Different people react differently to this change, hence the small amount of people that suffer from SAD.
It’s this could be partly due to our ancestors hibernating in winter months. However, not to worry; if the effects of the disorder are really too much, just move to Arizona, the sunniest place in the world.
This film is part of our series that provides the blueprint for a scientifically perfect summer. From sweating to hay fever, insects to jet lag, Kate Mulcahy helps you hack summer to engineer the perfect season. Taking a different topic each Thursday, the videos will gradually build up an equation for summer perfection; a summer survival guide certified by science.

SAD is very real and I feel because I'm living in Canada with both my parents of middle eastern descent I'm more susceptible to it. I hated the winter ever since I was a child and I didn't realize until I was an adult it's because it instigates feelings of depression. I'm eating healthy, lifting weights at the gym and being productive yet I still feel like I want to cry everyday. Everyday is a battle when I get home from work to stay awake until bedtime, otherwise I'll nap for 3 hours and be up all night. It's remarkable how one particularly sunny/warm day in the fall can lift up my mood like I just won a million dollars.

Seriously....I dread the end of fall because thats when I know my state of mind goes to it's all time low.....I start feeling so sad and alone and even when I try to hang out with people I can't shake that feeling.....This has especially started to become evident to me in the last 3 years when I went through this cycle of essentially isolating myself.....I get emotional just speaking about this cause I know how difficult it is to overcome

@@anais937 yeah it’s not fun I’ve been dealing with this same thing for the past 8 years and some years are worse then others last year was by far the worst I’ve ever experience and it always seems worse by having a false sense of hope that everything is going to be ok by how happy you feel leading into winter and then out of nowhere it just hits you like a tonne of bricks! I’ve always found going for a walk during the daytime trying to get as much sun as possible and then drinking lots of water and eating lots of fruits, vegetables and meat if you aren’t vegetarian/vegan helps a lot. And as hard as it is surrounding yourself with people is always beneficial even if you’re in a mindset we’re you don’t feel comfortable talking just sitting and being with other people does help it gives a sense of satisfaction in its own way. You will be fine and you will get through it it’s all about positivity and working through it I believe in you 🤙

I wonder if any research has been done, into how climate affects people and societies over generations. For example, are people from places that are warm year 'round, genetically, less likely to be depressed and does the culture in those places tend to be more relaxed and easy going in general? And, inversely, are people from places like the Arctic circle more likely to have mental illness genes and have a more rigid, up tight culture? I've heard that depression is more common in places where it's dark a lot of the time, but I want to know more on how it's affected the culture over time, if at all. Any anthropologist/sociologist study this?

I came from Bali and I was always dealing with depression but around 3 years ago I moved to the Baltic country to study and my depression has been worsening than ever and it affecting my personality. I was once an extrovert and now im shutting my self off from everyone bc my head is in a dark place. From what I encountered, people in the Baltic don't need high Vitamin D3 dosage because they got it from their food and plus their body adjusted with it. I didn't realise that I, as person with melanin, needs higher dosage of vitamin D3. Thus, I have been taking more than 2000 iu dosage and it's been more than 4 weeks since my last mental breakdown. Plus people from warmer climate tends to be melanated which their body absorbs higher Vitamin d3. And vitamin d3 deficit makes a person depressed or even suicidal.

To anyone reading this who suffers from SAD, I highly recommend starting Vitamin D supplementation. Take anywhere from 2,000-5,000iu’s per day and get your vitamin D levels checked by your doctor. If it’s the middle/end of winter and you’re finding yourself highly depressed that may be the culprit. Many people are vitamin D deficient, but those with darker skin are even more likely to have deficiencies in northern climates than those with lighter skin. Either way, if you’re feeling awful get a blood test done and you may have an answer for your symptoms. Aim to have your levels above 40ng/dl. Any level below 30 is suboptimal. Below 20 is deficient. Take care everyone.

How much sunshine are you getting? Look into taking vitamin D3 + K2 supplements; which I hear help with depression. I started taking D3 gummies and feel better than I have in a long time. I would go awhile without sunshine and spent too long indoors. D3 + K2 has also been said to improve immune system along with Zinc. Do a little research and see if it's right for you.

I get SAD in the summer. I’m normally depressed as it is, however I am significantly happier in the winter than I am in the summer. It’s easier for me to sleep when it’s dark for 18 hours. I’m one for darkness. I have eye problems that cause me to struggle with seeing when it’s bright. I like being able to see and in the winter I have the option to. If it’s too dark I can put on a headlamp and go out. I also find the cold to be a lot more tolerable. I cannot fair with the heat and usually end up overheating as soon as it becomes spring. Summer tends to be more isolating as well since I cannot go outside unless it’s 9 pm. The only fun parts about summer are storm chasing and the water not giving you hypothermia.

well i have the opposite, gloomy and cold weather doesn't have effect on me, rather felt more sleepy. the balinese gal below me had an different issue then, because i have responsive melanin also. began to research this phenomena but because I've had such an odd feeling only when i am in a non lit room around 5pm. as the sunsets went by, saw the sunlight gradually diminished, it felt uncomfortable even at relaxed position and accompanied good song they doesn't cut it. then it quickly vanished as soon as i turn the lights on. but what gets weirder is after it went totally dark like 7pm and afterwards, i can get comfortable when turn off the lights.. and i have good focus to study rather being sleepy 🤔
