@@jonmartin88 I'm on my second EV and have yet to have any brake stuff done. If you use regen and occasionally use the brakes to knock off rust, they should last a long time. One thing that others have had which I have not ever with an EV is the 12v battery dying. Now that the 12v in my current car is LI, it should last a really long time.

@@johntomko2946 There is no need for batteries to get anywhere close to gasoline on energy density. 2/3 of fuel is lost as waste heat, batteries only need 1/3 the energy density to match the range per mass. Most people cannot drive more than 3h straight before needing a 15+min break. As long as batteries can charge fast enough to be done about as fast as people are, are reliable, plentiful enough with fairly even spacing along highways, ~400km (250mi) of real usable range should be good enough for most people. For normal everyday commute, people should use L2 charging at home/work as relying primarily on fast-charging for all EV driving is non-sustainable and prohibitively expensive compared to off-peak charging at home.

@@katalac I will never go back, all the wasted money, work, and toil on the many, many gas vehicles I have had over the decades, I have 2 EVs, 2013 and 2019 Leafs, I have NOT had to do any real maintenance. The 2013 has 300K miles on it, the windshield washer fluid tube got clogged once, blew out with an air hose, there was a recall on an A/C part which they did for free of course, had a standard check up at the 3-year mark, which was free, and it was fine, because the harder rubber on the low rolling resistance tires, for 300K miles only had to change the tires 3 times, with the regenerative breaking the actual breaks are mostly there to hold it still when you are stopped, so the breaks last forever, and someone that borrowed the car messed it up and had to deal with that which is not the fault of the EV design, other than that it just doesn't need it, they both run fine. They are so simple, so few moving parts, no fuel, oil, etc., they just don't really need any real maintenance. And to boot, no expensive gas, we got the 2013 because we were spending 800$ a month on gas with a big commute, electricity is comparatively so cheap, it is like spending a few pennies per gallon, and on top of that the dealership lets you charge on the type 3 for free, so there is almost no real fuel costs, we went from being in the red to in the black because of that, our monthly costs with payments on the NEW EV we saved 200$ a month, and when we finished paying it off, it was a dream ever since, I will never go back to a gas vehicle again!

@@katalac Had a Tesla Model 3 for 5 1/2 years and total maintenance was $1200 which included a set of tires. 48k miles. Much better than my other gas vehicles.

If it cost you $2-500 to do an oil change yourself... That's a bigger concern.

You don't need an impact gun.

If you'd like to save that $300, use the jack that comes with the car and your (probably compact) spare tire. Move the back tires to the front and vice-versa. Mounting the spare once on each side temporarily is easy. No cost!

Wear out is not maintenance. That is repair. Maintenance is changing washer fluid. Changing brake fluid before it breaks. Changing perfectly functioning windscreen wipers for 100,-- per piece. Its just there to extract more money from your pockets.

"Which came first?" is always "the product" vs "the infrastructure and support". Cell phone towers were very localized until mobile devices became ubiquitous. The second evolves to meet demand once the product market demand reaches a sufficient size to make it economically viable. Change happens. To think otherwise is to ignore history.

Regenerative braking means a magnitude less wear for brake pads. Car manufacturers make a ton of money on parts and maintenance for the components that contain thousands of explosions per minute.

Current Ev's do use coolant for the batteries. 😀

@@curiosity2314 not our Tesla long range dual motor model 3. 115,000km. Conversely it is recommended that the battery is warmed up before our nightly charging. It happens automatically on schedule, or when we have a destination that require a SuperCharger stop. Where have you seen coolant for EV batteries?

This was the 90s...no regen...no battery temperature conditioning. Ideally you would like to maintain battery temps in a certain range during operation or charging though.

You could put the factory jack in the middle of the wheel base but i wouldn't recommend it, i'd at least buy some cheap jack stands.

But to sit here and pretend like it accomplishes something new, or that EVs don't consume energy that you still have to pay for and energy that is often still generated from fossil fuels is just silly. Even if they're not political, EVs go against their interest: they don't require maintenance. Car dealership owners are notoriously conservative, and like car service places, they're also against EVs because their low maintenance eats into their profit margins. Plus, electric car companies are better at skipping over the middle man and delivering cars directly to the customers.

Because of regenerative motor braking EVs rarely use the friction brakes and pads can last 100k miles. Wiring and electronics rarely need work.

It depends on how the battery is built and if it's designed to be serviceable. Many are but some are not.

My dad haad leased a 2020 Toyota Prius, and had battery issues as he did not use it enough to keep the engine battery charged. It had been boosted twice, and before they did it a third time, just before the warranty expired, word came down they were NEVER to be boosted! WTH? Well, battery had to be replaced, but luckily on their dime, and he got rid of it this year, getting 8 grand back. That is why I'll stick with a gasser, and if possible, a manual shift. Yea, maintenance of the clutch, but you can push-boost the buggers, and extend gas mileage by coasting out of gear. Put over 800 thou km on my '95 Ford Escort, but she had to go because of rust on the frame side of the drivers' door hinge. Engine still purred! Guy at the yard was looking forward to harvesting it for his Escort. (*sigh*)

@@WhiteWolf65 I have had my '04 Prius for 20+ years and the battery is still going strong. I've only had to replace the 12 volt battery. And I've jump-started my car a few times. Not a problem.

Batteries are lasting longer and will likely drop in price against inflation.

The brake pads definitely don't need to be replaced at least every 5 years. I've owned my Tesla for 5 years and the brakes get inspected every year --they're fine. With regenerative braking, I hardly use the brakes. They should last the lifetime of the car.

Easiest and cheapest option for the customer: get the brake fluid checked for the amount of water, there are testing machines. If the garage is honest, they will tell you this, if not, they will change the brake fluid no matter if it's still good or not.

Many vehicles don't come with a spare tire anymore, doesn't matter if ICE or BEV. And if you want to rotate tires yourself, there's a multitude of options. Mine is quite easy: here in Bavaria I need winter tires...

The only difference in maintenance is oil changes. EVs still have tires, suspensions, steering systems, braking systems etc.

I agree, although one has to admit that without him, EVs would not be as far as they are today. Tesla still sells enormous amount of cars, but they have to problems: their garages have a huge scatter in delivered quality (at least here in Germany) and their CEO. And over time, when other car manufacturers catch up, these two problems will really become a problem for them. Besides Tesla's innovation keeps slowing down. E.g. their 4680 cells do not perform as good as they were planned

I charge mine at home. I bought a charging unit that runs off a 220 like my oven. Charges in 2.5 hours. But, before I did that, I used the 110 adapter included with every car. It charges full over night.

I've had my Tesla for 5 years and like Pakman, other than tire rotations, a cabin air filter and wiper blades, I've had zero maintenance.

I did not down-vote your comments, but having purchased a new 2017 Ford Focus Electric and a new 2022 Tesla Model X Plaid, I wonder if you owned used/abused EVs.

Almost no one changes their diff oil, ever, so don't pretend it's a normal thing. Also unlike most vehicles Tesla has a filter in their gear reductions so the oil would last even longer.

Tesla doesn't recommend servicing the gear fluid.

They are all front wheel drive as far as I know, so no differential. I'm sure there must be a set of cv joints up front though

@@JRP3 Yeah, most people don't properly maintain their vehicles. Just because it has a filter doesn't mean it doesn't need to be serviced, oil degrades. Whenever a manufacturer claims that it's a lifetime fluid, that just means it will last long enough to go past the warranty period and no longer be their problem.

Being inexpensive to operate does not mean they are not expensive. But that was a cute attempt to shift words around to make your narrative work. How many tanks of gas can you put in a new Honda Civic for the price of a new Tesla?

@@ricardocabeza6006 Sure, pick a class of vehicle Tesla doesn’t have. A Model 3 would more likely compete with an Accord (my wife replaced her Accord with a Model 3). You can get a new one for $31,500. Just looked up the MSRP on an Accord LX and it’s $29,000. You will pay more or less depending on dealer and your haggling ability. It won’t take long to make up that difference with gas savings.

EV's are inexpensive to operate and convenient. They don't use a toxic source of energy. They are fun to drive and even the basic models have great acceleration.

@@ricardocabeza6006 EV's don't have the same mount of brake wear as internal combustion vehiclesdueto regenerative braking.. Maintenance is still much lower with EV's, even considering suspension repairs. Once most vehicles are electric, the grid can be shifted to a less toxic forms of production.

I really don't want one. I don't see myself owning a home ever again and being disabled I wouldn't be able to sit at a charging station at all. Hopefully they come up with EVs that don't need daily charging. I generally fill my tank up once a month and I'm not going to charge a vehicle especially in my state where there's fights at every charging station.

Assuming the average 30 miles per day in the US, city traffic and a Tesla Model 3 standard range with 270 miles, you would only have to charge maybe once a week, maybe even only every 1.5-2 weeks, if you only go in city traffic, as the 270 miles range are based on a mixture of road types, speeds and so on.

I think I'm the only person I know who drives less than 30 miles a week 🤣.. A lot of the Issue is where you live. Where I am a 3 mile drive can take an hour because of all the traffic. It's hideous

@@michelled8408 The 30 miles are daily US average. Problem is: the scatter can be huge, but in the end it's the only metric that I can use for a comparison. In the end everyone needs to break it down to his or her own requirements. What most people do not consider: if you only drive short routes, the motor often becomes not warm enough and requires much more service. And wastes much fuel. A running motor consumes fuel. A BEV not running consumes nothing. Except for the AC. 3 miles would be (depending on one's fitness) a fairly easy distance for riding a bke, but I know the US does not care much about bikes in traffic. Here in Germany my way to work is 6.5km, so about 4 miles. By bike it's contant 20 minutes. By car it's anything from usually 20-30 mins, worst time was 50-55 mins (walking wouldn't have taken much more time). May I ask what's your son's daily mileage is and what car he owns? Sounds like it's not fully fitting to his needs. Or is it maybe a plugin hybrid?

@@johnscaramis2515 he's actually renting right now as he stayed in town to help me after I broke my foot. I know he does Uber and Lyft on weekends and drives to side jobs during the week. I agree a bike would be great but being disabled it wouldn't work for me unfortunately..

There were no subsidies for the automobile when it was invented, because it was better than a horse. EVs have been propped up, because the general public does not view them as an improvement.

If you drive reasonably and get them rotated on time you can still get 40-50K+ miles out of a good set. If you goose it constantly, then yeah you're right.

@@michelled8408 Just like high-torque ICE are hard on tires, if you actually use the available torque I'm living in Germany, driving a Cupra Born (which is basically a VW ID.3) since Jan 2023, currently 33000 km (so rougly 20000 miles) in total, with roughly 23000km on summer tires and maybe 10000km on winter tires. Still got 6mm of profile left, so I would assume that I can reach 80-100k kilometers (so roughly 50-60k miles) or more. However I have to admit that I have no clue about the differences in tires, quality, thread depth and so on between Europe and the US.

Since 2019 5 company EVs with a total of about 300.000km. Only Skoda and Fiat needed mandatory maintenance.
