Hi Mike . Great way to spend a day @-20 C . Can't wait for the customers reaction . Bloody Heck HOOOW MUUCH . Fair play to the 300 TDI for a cold start with a battery that has been out all night in minus whatever it gets to in a Canadian winter . Brrr far too cold for me .
Yes, I'd check all the other oil levels whilst I was at it, especially the main gearbox - you might save them from another impending disastrous failure! I think I'll all give mine a check having seen this.
@@BritannicaRestorations I'm guessing there's about 50 per cent of solid steel left in each door frame and they ideally should be recycled into treads for your veranda!!!lol
Holy s***, look at the state of that. I love being able to crawl under a Defender without the need to get cold or oily just by watching this vid. I look fwd to the welding update, just take the gears out and weld a bar in
Mike I meant to say. Your a legend. Your videos and advise are a great help to many. I often refer people to your channel for how to videos. Both friends and club members and on the various landy pages on Facebook.
New to your channel, in the process of binge watching ATM, I own a D1 1998 TDI so I'm loving all this. Got a mate who has done this type of "gear tooth modification" to his LT77, main shaft first motion gears he forgot to check the oil level, they don't like "no oil", on the upside, his gearbox had stopped leaking just prior to going boom!
Hi Mike, I destroyed a transfer case in much the same way. Driving to work one morning there was a strange noise for a second as I pulled out of my drive. The noise went as quickly as it came so I carried on thinking I just hit a bump or drain cover. About 2 miles from work I lost all drive. So got towed to work. We removed the gearbox as I thought I'd blown the main box up. We drained and stripped the boxes apart. Then found the swarf from the transfer box. When we stripped the inspection plate off we found a sight much the same as you found. But there was still the correct amount of oil in it. The cause was the intermediate support shaft bearings had failed. The gear set on the shaft were moving back and forth. The crush spacer had worn through aswell. The gears had started to cut through the casing and smashed the teeth off like your customers. Lucky I had a spare transfer case. So we fitted that. As soon as we had it running we used it to recover a car back from Wales. About a 300 mile round trip. It never missed a beat. Towing the car out of the farm on a dolly was interesting as it was down an incredibly steep single track broken up tarmac track. Slippery as hell with moss and toad stools. She did us proud tho. Also received the bits I ordered today. Thanks much appreciated. The dismantling tool is better than I thought it would be! 👍
Td5 steering wheel, Disco 1 XS alloy wheels, Epsom Green as well. But still a 300 Tdi. It would be a '97 or '98 model I would have thought. The sad truth is this was one lovely looking Defender when new, it's a real shame about the state it's now ended up. It's suffered a lot of neglect and been messed about with. Never serviced, just driven and only repaired after it broke.
The poor owner - Been totally sold a basketcase! I'm willing to bet it'll need more than a transfer case, the gearbox may be not far behind, then the CV joints, the axle swivels, the bodywork, brakes, the electrics look suicidal (joined up positive cable flapping in the breeze!) - is the seatbelt mount legal? Maybe a good idea for a "What's wrong with this car" style of video :-)
Compulsive viewing if not a little painful! I changed the transfer gearbox oil on my vehicle last summer after watching one of your videos that sent me into a bit of a panic about when was it last done if ever. Feeling content knowing all the fluids have been changed regular since I have owned the vehicle and started watching your channel to give me a kick up the backside now and then.
@@BritannicaRestorationsWell Mike if that was supposed to have been serviced the owner should go straight back to the garage and get their money back and some. Of to check my oil now!!
Holy FRAK! I've heard of grinding your gears but this is on a whole new different level! Hey Mike, I think you found a new source of grinding compound for polishing the inside of the exhaust ! :D
and then people complain land rovers are unreliable... I've already heard several times stuff like 'pah oil changes are not needed, it's stronger than a normal car you know!'
@@BritannicaRestorations My guess is it was a slow leak, previous owner sold it or part-exed it to the dealership and they flogged it onwards to the unsuspecting owner. Literally running on its last legs. This is why I recommend a professional RAC-style inspection if you are buying a Defender. 300 odd quid or so, but plenty of peace of mind.
Yeah, hit the nail on the head. Plain old maintenance stops so much grief. Although, credit to the Defender I bought as a bit of a project, it had obviously suffered a fair bit of neglect but it still runs sweet as a nut. And it's just getting better as I sort it all out piece by piece.
Happened to our Defender 110 Tdi 200. Except main gearbox. Gear teeth on the lay shaft and input shaft sheered, ground or melted completely off. Still drove 1 500 Km in 4th gear.
As this was imported from Europe they must have fitted the box there - this is why sourcing a D1 box here is so expensive - they were mostly scrapped here
Wow that's impressive. Came here to see if I can work out why my Disco 1 LT230 has so much throw between high and low ratio, the linkage is fine so I hope it isn't the same thing. Barely drive it but will admit I don't remember when I last topped off the oil. Fine once it's in high or low there's just a massive amount of slop in between.
@@BritannicaRestorations Cheers, I'll get the cover off and see, it's definitely worse than it used to be but I saw your other video on how sloppy they are. I'd like to swap it for a 1.4 box anyway because I'm running 235/85s and it's gutless.
Good morning Mike. Weather looks beautiful. Wet and windy here.. crappy weather England!! That 110.. take the doors off and keep chickens in it. I reckon you did that damage to the TC when you drove it into the shop lol!!
The one saving grace about winter here is the sunny days. I remember in the North East we hardly saw the sun all winter (spring, summer and autumn) Lol! Mike
Hi Mike, thanks for the instructive video but nevertheless a smal complaint : I know little or nothing about Defenders and that's one of the reasons I watch your channel - to learn. But from time to time I get completely lost because when you discuss a particular part on e.g. the underside of the car you do not always indicate where that part is. So if you would be so kind to point out those parts I would be very grateful. Greetings from Belgium.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a mess as bad as that in a transfer box!😖 Hope the owner is feeling flush! I’d be gutted! But it’s why the first thing to do with any newly built Land Rover is check / change the fluids instead of spending money on pretty things like carpets😖 Sure you’ll make it better though👍
The weekend? It might take longer. So much swarf and black oil, it's remarkable the gears lasted so long. You have to wonder about the rest of the car, at least fluids wise. You'll have more aluminium for your foundry.
Haha here in Ireland I picked up a perfect 1.2 tbox for 100€ and I sold my perfect 1.4 to a mate after his blew for 50€ haha.. Can only imagine the money to try get a tbox over in the north Americas.. They're difficult enough to come by
This is obviously not the only thing that has been neglected. How many other things are about to break? If Mike says to take $2,000 off the vehicle's value for each rotten door then you've got to ask if it worth spending anything on this vehicle.
Haha yep two states leaking and empty but it is part of the self lubricating rust prevention system all our land rovers have so you need to keep them toped up😜
@@347lbs my current Landover is a newer model for me 1996 and I didn't realise these later models had an inbuilt vehicle angle gauge, park on a slope and inspect the size of the oil patch on the floor that comes out of the front crank seal to see how steep the angle is 😂
How do you lift the gearboxes out Mike? engine hoist from inside the cab through tunnel? just wanting to know the easiest way when the time comes as had a lot of fun with a trolley jack and no cradle from underneath on the previous LR
Oil helps. But judging by how the rest of this poor Defender looks its either a full restauration today or you are opening one Pandoras Box after another when it comes in for repairs :)
I meant to ask, you could have used a little bit of 🔥 on that seized bolt or is there a reason why you didn't? I have a set of those easy outs they are great, currently working on a Hyundai terracan.
Wow! What a mess! How long has he owned it? Surely it must have not had oil for quite a long time so can he (partially) blame the dealer he bought from?
Had it a few months. new head fitted as the old one was cracked (cost a fortune to fix by a local garage not me) and was supposed to be serviced 2 weeks ago.
I don't think I have heard you string together so many expletives in any of your videos before! It's funny how people think, get a new motor... full service or new carpets... Such a shame for the owner.
jeez, what a shame, makes me wanna run out and check my fluids! Is there more tellsigns on what transfercase a landy has? I have no idea which mine has, it's a One Ten 1987 with fitted 300tdi, it's not impossible they did a swap when they had the engine out... Do they have numbers or how can i see the difference?
