Why Would Anyone Go to Tijuana?

I've been visiting Tijuana several times per year since 2010. In May 2017 my buddy Brian (briancollins03...) and I went down to Tijuana to explore the food, music, and culture for a long weekend. We packed a few cameras with the goal of answering one question: "Why would you want to go to Tijuana?"

Thanks to everyone for all the comments - both the good and the bad - and for taking a few minutes to learn a little more about Tijuana.

Clayton. I've read about great Chinese restaurants in Tijuana, and because of growing displaced Haitians, great creole Haitian street food. I remember there was also a great Argentinian restaurant by the big shopping mall and Hotel Lucerna area (river). Thank you again for showcasing Tijuana. I spent time in Tijuana when I would do the annual Rosarito to Ensenada bike ride. Thousands of "gringos" join in the fun doing the inland route and a great free ride back to the start, after a few coronas and whatnot,,:)

Look at it this way, there are 100s of thousands of cities in the world and Tijuana despite its reputation is one that cant be ignored, maybe because of its border status, its controversial fame as one of the most dangerous or its amount of migrants, one thing that is certain is that people know of it across the world.

I stuck to touristy areas and took the following precautions: #1 dressed in tshirt and jeans #2 avoided flashing money #3 never discussed my spending plans with anyone #4 got out of TJ before nightfall (one time however I didn't and decided never again) #5 stayed aware of my surroundings #6 never got intoxicated

This has never happened to me in any US city before.

Hector, I think you may be thinking of the pre-2011 Ley de Migracion which, indeed, was very harsh. In 2011, Mexico updated the law. From Wikipedia: "The new law guarantees that foreigners statelessness and Mexican nationals will receive equal treatment under Mexican law. Under this principle all immigrants, regardless of status are granted the right to access education employment and health services. Mechanisms aimed at promoting family unity are now in place. Moreover, before the government takes action (e.g. deportation) with respect to migrant children and other vulnerable individuals (women, seniors, the handicapped and victims of crime) their specific needs must be prioritized and adequate services must be provided. Migrants are also granted judicial rights that they previously lacked, such as the right to due process." Here is the full text of the current immigration law in English for your research (www.albany.edu/~rk289758/documents/Ley_de_Migracion_en_Ingles.pdf) . Thank you for watching and for your comment.

Current Mexican immigration law is much harsher than US law. Yet the filthy corrupt Mexican government doesn't seem to inforce it when illegal's are just passing through their country on their way to the United States. If all those central American illegal's were stopping in Mexico. They would crack down like nobody's business.

Thank you for such a wonderful video. I saw sights around Tijuana that are new, like the boardwalk by the sea. Brought back great memories. Tijuana is truly now an international city with people from all over the planet. It is truly sad to see that border fence separate what should be united regional city--and neighbors.

I just wish that everyone who says that we don’t need a wall or we should have unlimited immigration, losses their job. It’s easy to be on your high horse when you have a college educated job and put down people who are competing for low wage jobs. But don’t think your job will always be safe, with visas and guests workers and outsourcing- nobody is safe completely. So before you point your finger at other people and feel superior- try putting yourself in their shoes. Things aren’t always as simple as they appear. There’s a lot of people of color who are directly hurt by this ( black lives matter with economics and job opportunities as well)

Excellent video, Mexican people are very welcoming to Americans unlike what happens in the USA to Mexicans, it's really too bad that Americans have been fed a lot of horse shit about Mexico. It's good to hear an Americano telling the truth about a beautiful diverse city. I live in San Diego and I cross the border every chance I get for the food, the culture, the friendliness of the people and because it's great to see another culture that loves you more than your own.

@Loera Javier.......The horse shit about Mexico comes from the Trump administration and I think everyone knows that. The elderly and uneducated Americans listen to every word Trump says.....it's a very sad situation in our country right now and just know that the majority of Americans embrace the Mexicans and their culture.

Nice take on Tijuana. I lived two blocks from Plaza Monumental in Playas de Tijuana for three years. Playas is a place you can walk safely anytime of the day or night. I love Tijuana and spent a lot of time there including doing humanitarian, Ministry work, Building Homes, Etc. The People that I have experienced personally have been extremely wonderful. But I always travel in groups. And other a missionary friend of mine tells me not to stray off the beaten path.But for you to say in essence that there are no dangers is naive. I think the bigger danger there is if you live there. Because I've only spoken to ONE person out of several who have lived between Tijuana and Ensenada that wasnt broken into, stolen from, raped, or home invaded. All the others have had one of those experiences. One of my friends almost killed an intruder in Rosarito. And for you to bemoan the border wall is absurd. The border is an absolute necessity and for you to think otherwise and ring your hands over it is childish.

Bingo. It's a unicorns and rainbows attitude. There is a reason people are trying to escape to the U.S. R U L E O F L A W. Those countries operate under the rule of men. Politburo. It's all about who you know. We must uphold the rule of law; hence the coup plotters need to be jailed and bankrupted. That wall separates the rule of men from the rule of law. When you break into the U.S., you just brought the problem with you. Immigrate LEGALLY! The wall prevents chaos from swamping our society.

Soon enough, I’m sure. I transplanted to Chino, CA about two years ago. Great video, btw, man. I completely related to people’s reaction to “You’re going to Mexico? 😳 It’s ‘so dangerous.’” Mention anything about a passport or a place where the media has labeled “dangerous” and people usually clam up. The first time I went to TJ was in February of 2017. There was no shortage of newsbits stateside saying that the violence had returned to TJ, blah blah blah. Thus, the first question I asked the Uber driver after crossing through San Ysidro was “Is it actually dangerous these days?” To which he replied, “No, it’s nowhere near as bad as it was several years ago during the war. It’s much safer now.” Cheers, Clayton!

Awesome video man. Thanks for uploading and sharing. Last year I ventured out to Baja Sur, California all by myself and this was my first time traveling solo out of the country. I live about 30 minutes south of Houston; all of my family, relatives and friends thought I was crazy for doing this. At the time there was a precautionary travel warning for the area but I didn't let that stop me from going. Was I little nervous? Of course. I was going to a place where I didn't know anybody. And btw I booked a room through Airb&b which helped a lot. My host was awesome. Not only did he pick me up and drop me off at the airport but he also went out of his way to show me around the area. One of my highlights of my trip was meeting this beautiful down to earth Mexican woman at a near by coffee shop ☕ whom I still keep in contact with to this day. Definitely wifey material LOL. For real though 😏. Anyway the point i'm trying to make is that you can't believe everything you see and hear on the media. I had an absolute blast. I recently took another solo trip but this time to PV, Jalisco and really enjoyed myself. So get your passport if you haven't done so already and make a move! Viva Mexíco. ✊🏽

I’d also like to corroborate the feelings in this video. I live in LA and visit TJ on day trips several times a year. Only once did I have an experience that might be considered remotely intimidating, but my experience has always been positive. Great food, great culture, beautiful beaches. My only quibble with you would be over the fence. I believe it has its purpose, not to separate families, but to promote safety in general and delineate the values of two very different countries. Outside of that, TJ is definitely vibrant, colorful and memorable.
@ClaytonDorris

JC6817 Thank you for your thoughtful and measured response. My goal was to mainly highlight the humanity of the people on either side of the wall and show how the barrier impacts people and families. I think most everyone can agree - love the fence or hate it - that it is sad to see people split apart like that.
@socalguy97
@socalguy97 6 лет назад
Clayton Dorris, believe it or not, I’m an English professor, so my words do tend to come measured even in casual conversation haha. But you’re welcome. I’m delighted and touched to see your video as it illuminates the softer, warmer side of a city for which so many have formed a categorically negative opinion. My experiences have been the same as yours. When I moved to California in 1997 I made the stereotypical day trip down to the border and from just that one experience I was captivated and have been going back again and again, sometimes monthly. On another note, I love Zona Centro, Zona Rio (where the cultural center is located), and Playas de Tijuana-easily my three favorites. If you haven’t been, I recommend traveling down to Puerto Nuevo for awesome food and music. With respect to the fence, yes, I do agree. There’s a sadness there. The only thing I’d say to that is if it were removed, I think Mexico would lose so much of its culture. And of course the small number of those who really do wish us harm would have unfettered access to to do so. Regardless, the video was heartwarming. Thank you for making it.

I grew up in San Diego, early sixtys, those houses used to be made of plywood and cardboard and Calle Revolution had wooden sidewalks, as I remember my childhood family weekends there. We went to the bullfights every Sunday during season. My folks would buy our meat there and I would get to buy and pop off firecrackers right in the street! As a teenager in early 70's we spent many a long weekend surfing Baja and TJ was always the first stop to gather supplies of cheap booze, tobacco and weed...fish tacos were 5 for a dollar!
