For removing the cover of the ball, I hound a nifty tool that looks like a big pair of scissors but, the top part is like a razor sharp piece of steel and the bottom where the teeth would be is a curved part. It has a ratcheting action so that it doesn't slip out while you're pauuting the ball in the tool . It's pretty dang sharp so be careful when you use it. I think the tool is for cutting PVC pipe up to about 1-1/2: diameter. I've used it on several hundred golf balls, now I just gott get out there and start carving them. I judy googled that tool and I was right. Amazing sometimes..
Thanks again. I really didn’t enjoy cutting into a goof ball as much as cutting into wood. Just didn’t have the same feeling. Thought I may as well post the video anyway. I’m sure lots a folks like carving golf balls, or want to try and may have been frustrated the first time.
I love carving with Golfballs because they dont have a grain and are very hard. I take the all of the plastik off that way you have more options, most of the time I try to carve animals (i am not very good yet) or cute litte things like a 4 leaved colver in a plant pot.
I have to agree with you that it’s nice not worrying about which way the grain goes. The golf balls I had didn’t seem particularly soft and my knife kept getting stuck in them. I usually whittle on Poplar wood which is pretty soft, as wood goes. Kinda missed that satisfying snap of the knife in the wood. I may try golf balls again sometime but for now I’ll stick with wood. Glad you like the golf balls, anything that will keep ya whittling is good thing.
Would it be possible to see some of your animal carvings please ? I see a lot of human faces but i would like to do some animals and other themes also. I just have so many difficulties to find out how to carve a 3d figure starting from a round object. Thanks in advance
@@amuckdesign id suggest giving it a few goes, really plan it out and have a solid idea. Wear a glove to protect your hand too. But honestly once youve gotten one successful one sat on the counter youll be hooked. Ive got close to 400 waiting to be carved lol
It’s possible I’m the only person on RU-vid being truthful about my experience. 😆 I’m sure there are some people that find it fun and perhaps even more rewarding than whittling wood, but not me. My wife tried whittling a golf ball also. She didn’t like it either. We didn’t bother making a video about her experience though. 🤣
