That "salted liquorice" always bothers me. Salmiakki in itself has nothing to do with liquorice, but is often mixed with liquorice to get rid of the chalkiness as it's just powder when in pure form. And don't think table salt on the salted part. That's natriumchloride and salmiakki is ammoniumchloride. Still salt, but a different kind.
@0Quiwi0
@0Quiwi0 6 лет назад
Liquorice is... well liquorice. Salmiakki is ammoniumchloride powder (salt of ammonia like table salt is salt of natrium). They are two very different things that are just often mixed together.
@artofstormdancing3319
@artofstormdancing3319 6 лет назад
Originally licorice was made from a plant, I think it is from a root or something. Salmiakki is ammonium chloride and is man-made.

NaCl is sodium chloride in English. Natrium is the Latin, or Finnish word for Na.
@0Quiwi0
@0Quiwi0 6 лет назад
Ah. I should probably look up the English versions when I use them. I just assume they are same as the Latin ones because there's so many Latin loanwords in "scientific" English. Effing equine... I still don't know if I spelled that right :D
@Blirre
@Blirre 6 лет назад
There are a lot of loan words from Latin yes. I study biochemistry and most of our books and materials are in English. It was really confusing in the beginning when Na was written as sodium and K (kalium) as potassium, but I guess I've slowly gotten used to it out of necessity. It would be much easier if the words sounded more alike.

3:34: Finland is not part of Scandinavia.
@01111011111101etc

Scandinavia is a geographic area in which Finland does not belong. Finland is a part of Fennoscandia, though. Finland is undeniably a Nordic country. And yes, we Finns embrace our inner Swedish and Norwegian DNA heritage almost as much as they embrace their share of Finnish DNA admixture. Culturally we have no urge to be (more) Scandinavian, although there is much in common. In conclusion, it is just fine that we Finns are distinctively Finnish.

It is culturally, historically and genetically linked to Scandinavia. Or did you just forget the 700 years we were Swedes? Btw Finland does not belong to Scandinavia, only Denmark, Norway and Sweden do. It mostly has to do with language, the 3 counties speak Germanic languages, the Finns speak a finno-ugrik language like in Hungary. Technically Denmark should not belong either because they own Faroe Island and it's too south. But when I was in school (born '80) I think it was thought to us that Scandinavia and the Nordic Countries (these 4 and Iceland) were synonyms.

Nadine, thank you for posting a video that started an intelligent discussion in the comment section. I learned that people are now thinking in geographical boundaries. When I traveled Europe there were only political boundaries. That was during the cold war and their was only east and west alignment and a wall splitting Europe. I have now come to think of Scandinavia as a political entity and Nordic as a cultural or ethnic entity, or maybe the other way around. Anyway thank you for starting up a good discussion in the comments, even though it may have been inadvertent.

Okay maybe he wasn't Scandinavian enough. Many Scandinavians love salty "licorice" (salmiakki) as well. It's up to how your tatse nerves are wired. You either LOVE the taste or you HATE it, and you know it with first try. Most Finns seem to have nerves wired the way salmiakki is delicious. - Suomenlinna was not conquered. It surrendered. Actually it was a victory with propaganda. The Russians and the Finns & Swedes wined and dined together, and the Russians spread propaganda. There had been an independence movement in Finland, and Russians promised all things fine (and actually kept promises after Finland became autonomic duchy in Russia) to seduce the Finnic independence people. And they claimed that Sweden had capitulate. As Suomenlinna did not get answers from Stockhom, the Swedish commander of the army decided to surrender.

You should. The lakes are gorgeous but fair warning, go there in the summer and not the winter.

You're right in what part of Scandinavia are they part of the Soviet Union

In English Scandinavia is synonymous with the Nordic countries. Besides, the meaning of Scandinavia has changed over the years and is not really clear on what it is based on. In the 1800's the basis was clearly political. It can change again. Nowadays the Nordic community is much more significant than the old Scandinavian connection, so the lines are clearly blurring.

If you really want to see Finland I suggest you go out of the capital region. Northern Finland looks amazing in winter and autumn, and in summer the sun never sets there, Eastern Finland has a LOT of lakes, Western Finland is more flat than other parts of Finland and it's beautiful too. Lol never heard that we got Suomenlinna in the civil war...

They have Vendace in Finland that they fry up coated with a little rye flour, amazing, like eating tiny fish chips.

Probably maternal ancestor, unless the DNA test you mentioned was hecking expensive. That's the most common and cheapest way to track your ancestry.
