Why Yamato & Sai Are Complete Character Failures 

How would you improve Sai and Yamato?

Let's be real, the main reason they flopped was because Sasuke clowned both of them in their first arc, it's the author saying: these guys don't matter, THIS guy(Sasuke) matter, and they never recovered.

I actually liked Yamato and Sai when they were first introduced, but then they just never did anything with them so they fell off. There was a lot of cool mystery surrounding their characters with the Anbu.

Anko as the team leader makes so much sense since she has a history with Orochimaru, and she has experience suppressing chakra with the curse mark. She's like the midpoint between Naruto and Sasuke, but she would likely try to kill Sasuke and Orochimaru. I can imagine some intense emotional scene where Naruto is fighting to capture Sasuke and stop Anko from killing him. Then, when Naruto inevitably loses, she can be like, "you're trying to fight Sasuke with Orochimaru's jutsus, but you couldn't even beat me?!" Then, Naruto trains his wind style and the story goes on.

Sai serves as Ino's husband. Walmart brand Saskue. Very important to the storyline

Unlike Kakashi who likes read Jiraiya's books, Yamato likes reading kind of architecture books so he can deal with the housing crisis after Konoha was attacked by Pain Rather than being a ninja, he would be better off being a construction worker

that may partly be true, but Kishimoto himself said that even Shikamaru's arc against Hidan and Kakuzu, he considered to be extra and regretted making it, so clearly he want the storyline to be direct not focusing on side characters, so even Sakura member of team 7 doesn't get much spotlight

FUCK Anko in the bridge arc would've genuinely been so good

Kishimoto makes up interesting Characters with unique and cool powers & backstory and then does absolutely nothing with them

I think Yamato should have served as the replacement Sensei for Shikamaru's squad after Asuma's death and that would have served as a way to push Ino-Shika-Cho to the next level Organically.

I actually think that Yamato and Sai probably were meant to introduce US (the viewers) the bigger world of Konoha's power structure. For Sai it meant introducing us to the Root organization that Danzo was in charge of, we were never introduced to Danzo in the 1st story arc, so introducing us to Sai was a good way to get us insight into Root. This dark organization and how people were indoctrinated into it. Sai has one of the darkest backstory out of the Konoha 12. He has trauma and PTSD from losing his brother and he tries to hide his emotions. He doesnt know how to talk to others, eventually he learns to trust others and becomes a staunch ally of Naruto. Yamato was one of the masked men that was in Anbu black ops. And here I will diverge and say, he was a wasted opportunity!!! he had Hashirama cells and only played a small part in helping Naruto control the 9 Tailed chakra, but later on during the war arc,,,,, he played no part in it. Yamato became a background character when Kakashi stepped back in to lead Team 7. In fact Yamato became less important than the Ramen owner!!!!

The real issue I have with Yamato is where was he before his introduction. The anbu yes, but his mission obviously should have been to raise and care for Naruto. Ignoring the 3rd hokage's complete negligence of Naruto, Danzo as Yamato's superior would have absolutely wanted to have Yamato watch Naruto to prevent the ninetails from taking over. We could have had a relationship similar to Gaara's where Yamato raises Naruto while also grappling with his mission, knowing that if he cannot prevent the 9 tails from taking over his objective would have to shift to killing Naruto, the boy he raised. Danzo would see this as an absolute win since he gets access to the ninetails (the village's nuclear weapon) and Hiruzen would be at peace knowing Naruto is being cared for.

Besides Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi and Shikamaru. Most of the characters in part 2 were failures

Shippuden never fails to disappoint with wasted potential.

I really wanted Sai to be something more, there was so much potential for character development there and it just never went anywhere.

In vanilla Naruto we get Team 7, 8 and 10. If Yamato and Sai were introduced as something like "the surviving members of Team 9" or something like that, and you put in some intrigue like, 'oh they were tasked with spying on Orochimaru' or 'spying on the Akatsuki' and 2 of the members ended up dying and on top of that you had the possibility of some if not all of them being Danzo's picks; it could have been a next level of intrigue in the series. Two teams that were cut in half co-operating as one unit for a limited amount of time, and then having this broken apart team just tagging along for harder missions makes more sene than whatever it was that got done.

There was genuinely a point in my life where I forgot that Sai existed. It was when me and a friend watched the Boruto movie for the first time, when we saw Inojin, we had NO IDEA who his father could possibly be. We were so stuck on this that stopped the movie and went to Google

If they combined yamato and sai's character, then maybe they would be more memorable like you did. Kishimoto could've added more of a story between yamato and orochimaru and him wanting to get Sasuke since he doesn't want to see another person exploited by orochimaru

I thought they were filler characters when I watched the anime for the first time, I thought the entire bridge arc was filler, and I thought it was strange why filler characters stayed in the series for so long, but I thought it was something like Bleach, in Bleach there are some filler characters that continue in the story, I thought it was the same with the Naruto Anime, imagine my surprise when I read the manga and discovered that they were canon.

if you truly think sai and yamato sensei are failures you didnt see the entire Boruto cast yet, boruto only works because the old characters are still around otherwise the show wouldnt get any tracktion just for the new characters D;

Gotta say, you made a better job on the rewrite. Mostly just for deleting Sai but it was still cool.

You could make a video about the most wasted characters in part 2 - Shino and Lee. They were amazing in part 1, and completely abandoned after time skip.

Just imagine Kakashi as you mentioned, in a team with naruto sakura and HANKO. She can give intel on orochimaru, his hideout, actually seeing a bit of backstory about the two. Maybe also seeing her dead there due to lack of power of naruto, fueling his trainings would be interesting

I'm pretty sure Kishimoto has a blood type racism to A blood types. Yamato, Sai, Anko, Pain, Rock Lee are just some examples of A blood types that got shafted.

the only thing yamato was really used for was to introduce hashirama cells and orochimaru experiments. Dont be sleepin on sai tho he was the one who introduced the foundation, aided a lot in the war with his foundation sealing jutsu, located sasuke at orochimaru’s hideout, birthed sakura commitment to kill sasuke, became the head of the anbu and is currently leading a team of three one of which might become a shinobi god. Just cuz he a walmart sasuke don’t mean he didn’t do _anything_

Much like many of the side characters, he was never utilized fully. It's sad, but the filler arcs & games does more justice for some side characters than the manga because at least they get the screen time to do more.

Anbu, especially those directly under Danzo, are designed to be devoid of personality as they are these military cogs and nothing more. Yamato and Sai are perfect examples. Kakashi and Itachi are cool, but otherwise Anbu are supposed to be boring and not flashy. Yamato and Sai's non-personality is actually charming.

I wish they'd have given him one unique woodstyle application. It could've been a neat attribute to have a point int he story that while we see the first Hokage is miles stronger than Yamato maybe Yamato has one specific technique or idea the first Hokage hadn't thought of that makes for a fun moment of intergenerational exchange. You could build on some side mutation that made Yamato survive to begin with or some experience he has in the story. It'd have been nice if he were allowed to stand out at some moment but Naruto is littered with discarded characters.

Having seen/watched your rewrite series, it's kinda surprising to hear that you like Sai more since you deleted him and fused his personality with Yamato's. But also, now I kinda wanna see you do something with Anko because out of all the background characters, she has some of the most potential IMHO.

Yamato and Sai are basically Kakashi and Sasuke if you ordered them from Wish

Sai and Yamato could have served at least this only role in the 2nd arc it would be this. They both get killed-off lets say Yamato gets accidentally killed by Naruto. When Naruto went Four-Tails and berserk at the bridge and Yamato tried to restrain him but gets crushed in the attempt by Naruto. While Sai on the other hand, under secret order continues his mission to assassinate Sasuke and encounters him and they both fight but gets killed by Sasuke just as Naruto and Sakura arrive to witness Sai death.

Make a video abaut all madara abilities and a video abaut top 10 strongest naruto characters And even though they are completely bad written make a video ranking otsutsukis because its fun to scale them I hope you will do my suggestions

To me both grew really. Both not really having an overwhelming character is storywise perfectly fine, but i think that both were important for their timeline

Kakashi should have been able to use the Sharingan to suppress the nine tails like the Uchiha. It wasn't a Uchiha exclusive ability

Rewrite idea for Anko Dygoknight, they shoulda had anko spying and tracking orochimaruss hideout and sasukes progress during the 3 years, and one afternoon she sees sasuke isolated training alone and sneaks up and tries talks to him , sasuke says "who's ever in there you can show yourself" this conversation is of course a helpless plead to come back but she does give sasuke more depth on orochimarus history which is why he's concent with "killing him and speeds yo the process", this same anko gives naruto and guys the orochimaru hideout location whereabouts since sasuke was a decent distance away, but because anko is already super weak she won't be of much use , but she does join the team 7 when they are Goin to sasuke , when they meet after the confrontation anko gives sasuke a certain look sasuke looks off , and orochimaru senses and infers they had an interaction before which is why he's not shocked when sasuke attacks him, also orochimaru paralyzes anko with her curse mark , so there's a scene later of her removing it, but that's when she realizes that she doesn't even wanna fight power was all her life was and when news spreads that sasuke killed orochimaru , anko finally lives at ease and just loves freely without worry now..and ofc your rewrites with Yamato and sai are included in this timeline

7:54 - Im watching this part and thinking about how Kakashi's fight in land of whirlpools arc of rewrite is just perfect.

Kishimoto just doesn't understand leadership. A leadership change like this would require Yamato to be strong and stoic (what sai was) in order to gain the trust of Team 7, he needed to prove his dependability through both his actions and his composure. He did not, thus became a forgettable side character to even the audience. Sai was the opposite. He needed to approach the team with caution and reverence, as that would be how a newcomer would naturally approach an already established team. This would prove him as someone that Naruto and the audience inherently wanted to protect. Instead Sai was a closed-off character akin to Sasuke, but not an unpredictable bad guy. He became 1 dimensional and boring.

Yamato replacing Kakashi when he becomes Hokage makes a lot more sense.

I agree. The overall issue is that these characters didn’t get enough time/scenes etc to establish enough about them to feel significant. They didn’t have bombastic moments as most of those went to Naruto or Sasuke, which is fine, but the rest of the cast really didn’t do much sadly. I’ve always been of the belief that each four man cell for konoha should have had significant akatsuki fight. Losing or winning woudnt matter entirely as long as the fight had enough moments for characters to show off their skills.

I still genuinely love Yamato, he’s not the strongest character but what kishimoto did right into his personality stuck with me for some reason. Especially with how serious and scary he could be in comparison to kakashi. Also the fact that we get to experience wood style through him is cool. He could’ve been written better for sure but I don’t think he’s a failure by any means

Yamato is just a fill-in for Kakashi whenever Kakashi is doing something important or is recovering. Sai is just sasuke 2.0 whose there to be naruto's friend. Plus sasuke was the original member of team 7 sai wasn't really a member of team 7.

These characters might as well have been two slices of bland white-bread with nothing on them walking alongside Naruro and Sakura

I actually really like yamato, i never really cared for sai. I also agree with a lot of the points you made of the usefulness of Yamato being null after Naruto can control the nine tails but i think if before he was kidnapped he got a chance to show of some really cool wood style in a fight he was in control of he would have been a way better character. Really respect your version of Yamato who's a hybrid of the two, and did that cool sacrifice during the fight against Kakuzu. WAY BETTER.

Yamato disappeared after Sasuke vs danzo or something? I forget he exist after that at least. And yeah kakashi could have used similar sealing jutsu to what orochimaru used to disturb Naruto and kyuubi's link in chuunin exam, he is already shown to be somewhat good at sealing

I agree that Anko should've been the stand-in for Kakashi. I also like how you effectively fused Yamato & Sai in the rewrite. Making Yamato a bit younger and having him take on Sai's place would've been more effective. He would've been raised up by Danzo for the purposes of preserving the Wood Style and having his own means to neutralize a jinchuuriki. Once Kakashi is back, Yamato would still be on the team and it would help highlight aspects of how Root differed from the other ANBU. While I get the idea of his wood style being weaker than Hashirama's, but it needed to be more than planks of wood. And maybe even minor sealing (as an attempt to reinforce his abilities and highlight how powerful Hashirama was). For the Team 7 reunited scene, the new member could actually DO something!

Only cool thing about Yamato were those "scary face" gags he had. I thought those were pretty funny. I wish Yamato was played more as a "serious guy but actually a dork deep down" character.

They look like value versions of Kakashi and Sasuke. I thought the same as you in regards of their potential replacements. Kishimoto had a great pool to draw from and instead decided to create these two soulless copies.

I liked yamato. I agree with you that his personallity is very borring. But I prefered having him instead of Kakashi in the crew. His skills where very cool and misterious. And I liked that there was a special character that could seal the nine tale. For me Kakashi always got to much spot light in the series. I think he is the adult that gets to do the most special missions. And it feels to me too often that he is kinda carring everything on his own shoulders. I always wanted to see more other jonin ninjas. Seeing for ones that konoa has more ninjas that we know was refreshing.

I liked Tenten :( She could've been a good way to really introduce fuinjutsu in a less hand-wavey way and made Naruto consider his proficiency with weapons during the Tenshi bridge arc if she went. Could've even helped him decide to pick up bo staffs in memory of Hriuzen, making his choice to make his TSOs orbs into them less out of left field.

wouldve been more interesting to have anko as their team leader like you said, completely take out sai and have him replaced by a kid yamato that struggles to contain the 4 tails mode without help, but he's their only real hope to stopping it.

Anko should’ve been the person lead the team in the tenchi bridge arc. Genma Or one of the other jonin could’ve been written to have the sealing power Yamato did because fans already were interested in them.

6:15 acting like wood style doesn't just involve aggressively planting trees. Both Obito and Hashirama full on summon trees in combat even in part 1 the reanimated hokages legit made a whole forest on that roof. Sometimes wood can just look boring it's a part of it

I would fuse them in one character with both Justus. Yamasai would be an experiment of Orochimaru with Wood style, raised by Root, and would refuse to use his wood release after leaving Root, instead he would use Ink Justus just like his dead brother. However he will use both of them at the same time later own. Good? No?

They are kind of like Ginkaku and Kinkaku in that they feel like filler characters very easy to forget they exist at all

If Choji and Neji had died (as God intended), with Sasuke gone, that would be so fitting to redistribute Kurenai's Team. There would be no need for Sai (or Yamato, since Kurenai would be free, although I'd much rather go with Anko as you suggested). Now I'm interested in thinking which redistribution would be better, for the story... In any case, that could've given us more screen time for at least one more character from the Konoha 12, and with their numbers reduced to 9, maybe Kishimoto would've find more story beats for them. It would also be interesting to see if some of them (Hinata most likely) would feel imposter's syndrome, filling in the blank of a dead comrade and all.

i honestly liked the idea of yamato and sai's introduction, it could've made some conflict with naruto and sakura, have some mystery surrounding them, with tsunade not knowing if she can trust yamato because of danzo's word. But they both failed at that miserably, i was hoping for naruto and sakura to dislike sai because they know he's iding something but no, they dislike him because he's not sasuke and he called sakura ugly and said naruto had a small dick. It's childish and really boring to look at, it could've made for some cool tension during the arc but no, it's just wasted on jokes about how small naruto's dick is, furthermore they basically throw his entire backstory during the arc removing any kind of mystery and basically making him useless for the rest of the show, same for yamato, the tsunade not knowing if she could trust him was quicly abandoned and he was just a nice guy being nice. I wish there really was conflicts going on, like when yamato said "if you're an hindrance, i won't save you" have it be the truth, like he's like "i'm not as nice as kakashi" but is pretty much even nicer, it doesn't make any sense. I actually think it would've been cool to have everyone doubting each others like yamato being wary of sai because of tsunade's word and naruto because of nine tail, have naruto and sakura doubt both because they don't trust them and sai being a complete mystery. And when orochimaru goes "oh yeah yamato's my experiment" naruto and sakura would mistake it as him being an orochimaru spy and turn on him and he would have to clear things up and it could've been a cool quick 3 way fight between sakura yamato and kabuto instead of having them stand next to each others watching naruto and orochimaru's fight

Tenchi bridge really should have been Anko. Like that would have been so cool! Give her a nice action sequence and imagine if it was like TenTen who went because of the ninja tools element she is good at sealing jutsu or some shit. I dunno lmaooo

Something I'd like to say is that I think Yamato and Sai being on the same team was actually one of the reason why they failed. Sai as a character would have greatly benefited from having Kakashi as a sensei. Sai's lack of emotions and having to be part of the root where killing one that meant the most to you is something I think Kakashi could have found out and told Sai that he needs to understand his feelings to understand what can make a shinobi stronger. I also think both Yamato and Sai weren't developed power wise properly given their jutsu were pretty versatile, yet a lot of Sai's drawing weren't anything special, they were just a weapon and in a team with Sakura and naruto who fight head on, Sai was not as special as he could have been. Overall great video.

Honestly I feel like instead of introducing those 2 in that as replacement for the missing team 7 members kishi could've just had Naruto and Sakura tag along another konoha team like personally speaking team kurenai giving them more things to do since they really got nothing out of the Itachi pursue one.
