I think the problem in todays cinema now is marvel ruined the movie experience. Everyone seems to want instant gratification, with action, humor etc. And the fact that most films hit streaming services within a couple months of release. I grew up in Apache country and love the history good and bad of it and Pt. 1 really grabbed my attention, especially Costners attention to detail, story telling and the cinematography.. which is a huge part of the story as well. I saw the film Sunday and I can't disagree with any point you've made. This film reminded me of Steven Speilberg's 2005 miniseries Into The West. Adding a young star anyone under fifty knows would have helped, and yes a trailer that gave you something tangible and not just, old white guy goes bang bang on a horse. My dad is the demo for this movie and he's waiting for it to stream, a Kevin Costner western couldn't get my father out of his chair, and that's who they marketed to! If you're gonna pitch what seems like another prequel for Yellowstone you better give it something special. I think they were lazy, they rode the Yellowstone wave and just assumed my dad and the like were just going to come out because they were hoping for Dances With Wolves. And I do NOT want to hear some BS about people not liking westerns anymore, people like good movies and they don't care when or where they take place.

Hard to go respect Costner's film when everyone knows how big of a deal Yellowstone was, seems kinda crappy to leave the series with Danny Huston (Dan Jenkins) to make a genre adjacent series that probably has the same plot as Yellowstone. "I'll kill for my land, blah blah blah." More people probably would have watched it if he finished Yellowstone and gave ALL OF THE FANS a conclusive end to the John Dutton Saga... Critics were pretty divided on The Judge (it has a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes) and Dolittle was just bad (15%). People will watch a movie with Robert Downey Jr if the movie is great. I did not see it because the trailer was not interesting and it is a part 1, meaning to the average person who goes to 3 maybe 4 movies per year, it is a incomplete movie. So why would I go see a incomplete movie that I have no investment in... I allrdy k iw the arguments for my 2nd point so... LOTR was 1 movie per book and had the Tolken Fanbase where this (HORIZON) is a new original IP. "But Harry Potter 7 and HungerGames 3 etc." They had other movies that lead up to a multi part finally.

I agree with John's 3 points, but for me connected to th trailer issue was the movie's run time of 181 minutes. I think a film's marketing really has to convince casual movie fans to commit to that length of time. For example, Oppenheimer was 180 but the marketing was phenomenal or Avatar Way of Water was 192 but they marketed you have to see Pandora on the largest screen. Horizon failed to make the pitch that you have to see this in theaters rather than "I'll wait until it is on streaming to see how it is"

Yout are incorrect. Costner had made himself available per the agreed upon filming schedule. However the scripts had not yet been completed which pushed our filming and caused a conflict with Costners involvement with Horizon. So if you want to blame somebody, blame Sheridan and the film company for not getting the scripts completed as per the agreed upon schedule.

You can't be the writer, director, star, producer, editor, marketer and promoter of FOUR major movies filming in Utah over 4 consecutive years 2022 through 2025 and also be the lead actor in Yellowstone which shoots in Montana at the same time. Kevin made his choice.

Honestly, the trailer left me confused about the messaging in this film, so I passed on it. I have actually been getting into more Westerns because my Dad loves them, but the trailer almost felt like they were vilifying the Natives for trying to stop them from moving west. I wasn't really feeling that, and I know some of the people I shared the trailer with felt the same, so we passed on that. If I hear that's not what it's about, then I'll catch it down the line on streaming.

I don’t think the film was a total disaster but I kinda feel like if it was on TV it would have been better served. After 3 hours I don’t feel the characters or story were even that well established or set up. That being said I will see part 2 to see if there is any resolution. But unless parts 3 and 4 are completely generational so like Star Wars or probably more easily comparable Roots 3 and 4 have a brand new generation of characters. I find it difficult believing it will have a satisfying conclusion or if I’m even going to get a conclusion. If you look at IT and Dune that they shot not knowing if Part 2 was going to happen part one tells mainly a complete story. This felt like the Chessboard had been opened up but not all the pieces were on it yet. And after 3 hours I feel you need to at least set up the board completely and move some pieces.

Jon you are spot on but that is a fraction of the problem. Don't forget a three hour run time and this is a part one so doesn't have a proper ending. It also got largely negative reviews due to it runtime, multiple storylines that don't cross over (yet) and Costner not even showing up until an hour into the film. I'm a big fan of westerns and Costner and had high hopes for the film, but was slightly disappointed. The story seems to me that it would work better as a miniseries and I personally believe it has potential to be a big hit when it hits streaming and the audience can break it up into something more digestible.

I'm a fan of both Yellowstone and Kevin Costner and I was foolish enough to go see this disaster of a movie in the theaters. I mistakenly thought based on the trailers and scenes shown in Costner's talk show circuit promos that this was basically going to be his version of the Yellowstone limited series spinoff 1883, which I consider to be a masterpiece. And it does appear to be just that. The problem is that the subpar writing, the minimal character development, the limited action and wasted prolonged camera shots of the landscape just dragged the movie down. It was boring and massive disappointment. One of the worst movies of the year and one I regret wasting my time on. Chapter 2 could turn out to be the best movie ever made but would never bother going to theater to watch it. I haven't been this angry of disappointed in a film since the Argyle and the before that episode 8 of the Star Wars films. What makes it even worse is that Kevin Costner intentionally damaged and basically ended Yellowstone which was a top 5 show of mine for past 5 years. While it is true that Costner should make the decisions that he feels are best for him or true to his heart, there is something to be said about the responsibilities of being the main star on a TV series, especially a hit series. The show is about his character, his ranch, his children, his enemies, his allies, his employees, his family's history. While it may not be a big deal to him to walk away from the show and basically end it, it does for other actors and crew members who may never be on another project that has been this successful for this long. All of Costner's biggest career accomplishments with regards to critical acclaim, fan response and box office are all behind him. For some of Yellowstone's cast members, this show may be there most successful job and for it to end because your lead actor just couldn't care less is a shame.

I saw this movie opening day, and there were a handful of great scenes. But I believe this movie has some major problems. The story structure is fragmented into three pieces with three separate stories. They may all head in the same direction eventually but as of now it’s a lot to take in and understand clearly. Having one clear standout story as the lead may have been the better play. Then bring in the other key characters after the main story is established

First Costner signed onto Yellowstone for just 2-3 seasons top, he extended it cause Taylor and the studio basically begged him to stay on, and in doing so, he had to push all his other projects back years.. He's not getting any younger and he stayed on for the fans.. But it was past time for him to move on. Yellowstone is coming to an end anyway, but to hate on him and say he spit on the fans is absurd.

So lol, it's been proven you're wrong! That aside what bothers me about YS: Taylor lets Kevin get the blame, what a coward, a great writer, but he doesn't take responsibility for his own mistakes: the first delay lasts a year, doesn't have the script even after the strike , leaves people with other responsibilities hanging, Kevin still had YS as number one, but had to start Horizon as well. Taylor knew, but didn't bother contacting Kevin when K. reached out. NO, he lets social media make up their own story and hides behind it. WOW bad attitude sir, you are a great writer but have a huge personality problem. You'll have to deal with it one day, I'm sure.

When the main character in a beloved show decides to leave it you should expect the fans of the show to upset.
