I have a theory: There's a voiceline "Look for the Eye" he's refering to the Eye of Ender When you look at his eye he thinks you will get *his* eye so it attacks
Baybe is because they thought they we're people too but they figured out they weren't human so they try to ask help to mobs and players and when you look at a enderman they don't attack you but when you look away they attack because they think your ignoring them but why attack? Is because they are trying to get your attention.
My theory is that the endermen lost their humanity over time, and became more like animals, but having the intelligence of a human. So I think the endermen think that having eye contact is a term of intimidation, so they get angry and aggresive at you to assert more dominance over you.
My theory: Endermen used to be just like us, but their life in the End warped their physical form, they still maintain some characteristics of their previous forms (limited speech, picking up blocks, etc) but when they look you in the eyes they are reminded of the forms they once held, and they are angered by what they have turned in to, so they want to kill you out of jealousy
I think the exact same and I think they can teleport because over time of only being able to eat chorus fruit it’s given them the ability. Could also have helped morph them into what they are now
They really just realize who you are when they get a good look into your eyes. When they know who you are they become jealous of you because you still know how to build, mine, craft, break, grief, troll, (etc) so they attack, thinking that they will gain knowledge of those things when they are done with you. The backstory of the enderman is just a little bit sad.
someone else's theory says they're telepathic and communicate in that type of way, so when they look into your eyes they go insane almost immediately it also makes sense with how their voices sound damaged like their vocal chords atrophied or something
They're basically humans, but of different subspecies that survived along side with homo sapiens(unlike neanderthals and other ancient human species that went extinct)

Green eyed Enderman could not teleport in the past, and they were often hunted for their green eyes by the players, just because they were pretty. Now with the normal, purple eye Enderman I think that it’s because of the past with the green eyed Enderman! Nah. If u look straight into Enderman's eyes, they stop and gaze at you. Maybe they just think we see them because they are ugly, but having eye contact makes then think you are looking at them with respect

And when you stare right in their eyes they stay still at first pretending nothing have happend. But when you start thinking everything is ok they come for you. I think you could be right about why endermen hate being looked at - they may chase you to attack while you run away, but if you constantly stare at their eyes, they just stay in one spot. Maybe when you do that you petrify them.
moreover, after chasing you for a little while, they will become normal again if you didn't hit them. That mean they realize you are not trying to hurt them so they don't hurt you back
I think that the enderman were once people to and when they noticed their deformity they were ashamed of themselves. So when they are looked at by a normal person (you) it reminds them and they take their anger out on you.
No, endermen we're always endermen. Ancient builders got infected and turned into zombies and skeletons. The player is not even the same thing as the builders (at leadt I dont think)

Its because they have the souls of the ancient builders. Their souls are still in there. Some went to the end where they became endermen. When they came back their family was scared of how they looked and didnt recognize them, so they ran away. The endermen became so sad. Over time their sadness turned into anger to the point where if you look into their eyes they get mad at you because our minecraft characters probably remind them of their family. I feel sorry for them. We should stop killing them.

Here's a logical theory Mojang has confirmed that when endermen teleport they go through a pocket dimension sort of thing and the player also goes through it when using ender pearls or chorus fruit. So when the ancient builders fled to the end after being terrorized by the wither, they didn't lnow it was a one way trip. So they went to outer islands to avoid the dragon and at the outer islands, they survived on chorus fruit and built cities. Everytime they ate the fruit they would teleport and go through the pocket dimension where yhe endermites live. The endermites would stick to em everytime they went through the dimension and eventually took control and changed their bodies. They changed them into tall black endermen and everytime you look at them its the endermite trying to get them to attack you and gis theory makes sense since when they see a endermite, the endermen attack it and thats the human side

My theory is the were once human, they made it to the end but they couldn't kill the ender dragon and got stuck. They developed teleportion from the amount of chorus fruit they had to eat. Why they would they attack when you look at them? They are warning you, they know that if the player makes it to the end that they might not come back how they once were. They are trying to help by murdering so you can't repeat their mistakes. How did they get back to overworld and nether? Teleporting. Or it's a sign that they know we will murder them for ender eyes

Or maybe they know that you will have to kill the, eventually for pearls to make eyes of ender but if you look at them in the eye they probably think that you will pop them out for the portal!
The endermen hates water bcs of the curse of being an endermen from the end and now that curse doesnt let them communicate with us and is sensitive with water and have different colour sight and gains the ability to teleport anywhere.

I think its because their frequency is so high they automatically attack you since they exist in a much higher different dimension/plane of reality. They attack you just to protect their energy. Think of it in terms of energy vampires. If someone stole energy or thoughts from you would you attack them too? In Minecraft you are an energy Vampire. You're just killing their vibe. I think Endermen are the most extreme example/embodiment of that in todays society.

Theory: Endermans weren't humans,but they were smart and intelligent creatures who created their own civilazation at the End Dimension they lived and farmes shulker's in End Cities,used flying boats for transportation between islands,they even went to overwold and built underground strongholds to both to not get affected by rain that hurts them and travel between End and Overworld,they they used overworld to go to nether which explains why there is endermans there,after a while,they decided to summon ender dragon to use it as weapon of mass destruction,but instead ender dragon corrupted their minds and became free instead of being their weapon,they get mad when you look at their face due to their mind being corrupted and them losing sanity and getting mad at random things
*Undeniably cannon lore* :the reason they don’t attack you if you have a pumpkin on your head is because one time they accidentally made a golem when deciding to make a 2 by 3 iron block wall with a pumpkin on top for style. They took the 2 blocks from the sides doing their own thing and ended up making a golem. That they are friends with. That’s why golems don’t attack endermen
I don’t think this is correct, because when you look at them and they chase you they make an ambient sound which comes from a random direction which tries to make you think there is something there to make you look away from the Enderman. It is a diversion, so the enderman really just doesn’t want you to look into his glowing eyes.
Why are they scared of water then probably because of Dreams water clutches dream is probably the devil to them because he's absolutely a god at Minecraft he has killed so many players have killed so many mobs so that's probably why Endermen rather not stay near water probably

Its like in real world, if u stare at someone long enough he will be angry, but in real life and entire day is 24 hours long, but in minecraft it takes only 20 minutes to pass away. Its my teory, what do u think about it?
Im pretty sure its just a dominance act. Like how you stare a dog or an ape in the eyes I think? The animals feels like your challenging it. Same with the Endermen.

It could be because they are agreesive when you stare at them in the face similar to primeape from Pokemon which gets mad the same way and tends to beat ya up for staring at him directly but if you don’t look at enderman and have your back turned he will leave you alone also if you wear the pumpkin mask he leaves you alone which I assumed he was maybe scared of it
i think it's because they were the ancient builders and making the end portal was steve's idea but he didn't jump to the portal and when the others kiled the ender dragon they realised that they couldn't escape so they got to the outer Islands then they eated and farmed the corus fruit and they bild cites for farming living and other things then by the fruit they became the endermans so when you look at them they realised that it's you the one who said to jump to the portal so the rage from all the way back comes to here so that's why they hate you (edit:for the people that are curious what are the ship's they were a way to fly to defeat dragons that's why there are no dragons except Jean
