I have been racing motocross since I was 6 years old now I'm 19 and going pro this summer! I think motocross is the best thing to get into racing, very “little” commitment (usually one day events) and you get a decent amount of track time

I have raced everything. Formula and spec miata in SCCA. SV650 in NEMRR. And yz125 and 250sxf in motocross. You are 100% correct. Tons of track time for stupid cheap. Motocross is the way to go. It is the most physically demanding out of the bunch also.

I use to race and decided to be part of the crew for my buddy at Daytona. Never raced Daytona as you want a bigger bike to hit speeds of 180 on the banking. Anyhow, he got sponsored by Hooters and we got plenty of girls and free wings as a result.

I've really enjoyed watching this progression over your riding "career". It's pretty normal, really, but in your case with your channel it's been documented, and we can kind of watch it in real time. From new know-nothing squidlet, through punishing accidents to being a mature motorcyclist moving the need for speed to racing, and now exploration of various offroad shenanigans as you've exercised the worst of the speed demons. Almost everyone goes through that same cycle, if they ride long enough. Racing is amazing fun, but for everything you said. You need to be supremely committed and very well off financially to be able to keep it up for the long term. I'd add, as well, as you age (not just talking Old Guy stuff here, but just into 30's and whatnot) healing slows down, the number of people you know personally who've been absolutely wrecked goes up, and your advancing actual career presents you with more to lose if things go sideways - it makes it ever more difficult to continue making that risk assessment in favour of road racing. I think that's why adventure riding and offroad fun is becoming so very popular. You can have lots of fun and challenge yourself learning new skills at MUCH lower cost and significantly better safety, in a constantly changing environment with new challenges all the time. It's just a matter of time before you roll up on a KTM890 Adventure R, sporting a high vis aerostich suit and modular adv helmet. Just a matter of time :)

I raced with WERA from 1993-2004. Started on an RZ350, then a ZX-6R a couple years later, but my best years were 2000-2001 on an SV650...4 Regional championships and a 3rd at the WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta. My last race bike was a Laverda Ghost Strike back in '04.... If I had all the money I spent racing bikes....I'd be retired by now. BUT.....I had more fun than those guys my age that have retired already.

there are some race series (at least here in Colombia) with some categories that you are only allowed to run street tires, so a rear can last like 3 races and a front could last twice that and you can race a stock bike and still be competitive, lets hope it isn't as expensive as 1,5k each race...

@@mrrashu77 up to 200cc 4 strokes with road tires, up to 250cc 4 strokes with race tires, and 115cc or 150cc 2 strokes w/ race tires... they're not raced like in a road racing track but on a kart track so it keeps top speeds and risk way lower (and because here in Colombia we only have 1 like proper road racing track) EDIT: forgot about supermoto, that'd be 450cc

Cool video, thank you for sharing your view. I raced motorcycles for a couple of years and I have to agree that the thrill is very different to track days and that you learn a lot more. I think the most cost saving factor is to be realistic about your own skills and ambition. Don't give 105%, just because you are not happy with your laptimes, because not crashing saves the most money! In my opinion, if you are not within 115 - 120% of a top professional (WSBK) laptime, you should rather invest in more seat time and race training with fast professionals rather than investing in all kinds of "go fast" parts on your motorcycle, let alone qualify tires.. Modern stock sportbikes with next to no upgrades (brake pads/fluids, slicks, fairing) are so much more capable than many would believe.

I did MotoAmerica last year for a few rounds and the cost of that compared to other countries is crazy! The national series in my home country is like 6 times cheaper a weekend. Racing can be done cheap, just need to know where to race. Good video with realistic information about the USA.

True words. With there being trackdays these days, don’t go racing unless racing is your thing. And yeah, it’s pretty much gotta be a huge focus, if not all of it, on every aspect of it when not at the track so when your at the track it counts…

You can race a 2-stroke off road for relatively cheap, and I could still barely afford it, lol. My novice road racing ended pretty quickly when I realized the tire expenses ALONE. Peace...

From what I’ve seen in the car scene, getting into racing is relatively cheap. Where it gets expensive real quick is if you want to be competitive.

Sure, this is true. But then that's just a fact of life for pretty much everything. You don't get to be top in anything by being half-assed. And that's why you have to decide what the objective is for anything you do and own that. If you want to do a thing just for some fun, then you have to accept that you're not going to be at the top. If you want to be at the top, then you're going to need to bring total commitment, and then some.

I endurance raced with the CMRA for Nine years, and I can tell you by the time it was over I had sold 2 custom cars 2 race bikes and a beautiful CBX and I was flat broke! Racing is such a drug that I would do anything legal to get to the track.But I would not trade that time for anything. Really good and honest video.

Great video YN definitely not for the Weekender track goers. Don't forget fitness as well want to race you gotta get really really fit, mentally as well as physically. Not just the expense of your motorcycle their is the expense of your work and fitness programs to consider as well. You may be better than the other guy but getting beat because IE that guy got a sponsor so he less worried about covering rent in case of accident, he all ready got the edge over you. You can be the next rossi but you have to get spotted and it is really difficult hard. It's not called competition for nothing and yes I do applaud the guy who even cross the line flag last full respect.

sounds exactly like road racing vs track days for cars. i got more and more into doing track days with various cars. started "real" racing, and it was immediately too rich for my blood. had way more fun on track days. everybody is all serious on race day. track days was like just hanging out and having fun.

I totally get it. When my buddy said, hey you should try riding on the dirt. So I bought my son and i a dirt bike. Long story short; sold my ZX14R, my ZH2 and now have 2 track and 1 trail dirt bike my sons dirt bike and a fuggin Multistrada Enduro Pro. Dirt/ ADV riding is super addicting and I get more adrenaline from that than screaming down Limecreek Rd with my hair on fire and a sack full of jock itch.

It doesn't have to be this hard. Costs and risk are usually directly proportional to ambition. If you want to win on superbikes at national level then it's gonna cost serious money and require 100% commitment. On the other hand, racing a small capacity bike on dot tires at club level can be relatively cheap; keep the red mist in check and the risk reduces too.

Good video. Thanks. I worked on racetracks on the east coast as a motorcycle safety Marshall for about ten years. I worked with AMA professional racing, AHRRMA vintage racing, amateur CCS and others as well as some race schools and track days. I have never done a track day myself, but may in the future. I just wanted to Chime in about the danger of road racing. Motorcycle road racing is the deadliest sport in the world. I don't have hard numbers, but would wager that at least 10 people die every year. Even the safety marshals get killed sometimes. I have personally been on track at 6 deaths over about 10 years. Some made it to the hospital and passed after a few days. Many many others get hurt as well. Perhaps the danger is a part of the attraction. I wouldn't trade those days at the track for anything though. I would never tell anyone who wanted to race not to either. There is a real level of excitement involved and I hope everyone who wants to experience it can and also can be safe doing it. Again thanks for your videos. Keep it up.

Being someone who just started riding 6 months ago (‘21 R3) and got rear ended by a car 4 months in I’ve been wanting to really move away from street riding and do track days but the $$$ part of that is no joke for sure. I myself am in Austin as well and am hoping I can at least do my first track day this year.

The R3 is a great track bike and relatively cheap for the track and racing. Tires can last close to an entire season. Once you get the gear for track riding, your running costs are mostly going to be track day and race entry fees, unless you get all Gucci with a fancy trailer and staying at a hotel.

I’ve wanted to ride since I was a young kid so I’ve been watching RU-vid videos my entire life on proper road etiquette, waited till I was 24 and a little smarter to start riding, and have surrounded myself with riders in the area that almost all track at some level, and have made practicing emergency stuff in parking lots a regular thing. I was just unfortunate to be rear ended by some asshole who thought his phone was more important than the motorcyclist in front of him approaching a red light. His first two sentences were “what happened?” And “I thought you were going to run the light” even though I was braking insanely early due to wet road conditions

Also seeing how worshiped the r3 is amongst track riders has encouraged me to keep it or at the very least if it goes it will be replaced with an R7

@@Turn1PPF I wouldn't even worry about outgrowing the R3 for the track yet. Tossing a 300lb bike that costs only $4k around a track is an absolute blast. Yeah, getting passed by 1000 boys in the straights can be annoying, but passing them on the next corner entry as they toss the anchor out is a real good feeling.

Im a 40 year old army brat. I raced a Yamaha yz 125cc and 250cc when I was a teenager. Moved across country and there was no organized racing. I continued riding pretty hard for a little while and then I had my accident. Was hauling ass in the woods got on a thick bed of pine straw and it was like hydroplaning, the bike just didn’t respond. Ended up clipping the handlebar on a tree and went flying. Broken hand, broken arm, several cracked ribs. Lucky I didn’t die that day. Funny thing was the bike was fine aside from the broken clutch handle because that’s where it hit the tree. But a foot to the left and it might have been game over. I went years without riding and now I look at it riding a completely different way. It’s my way to chill and enjoy nature. I’m not chasing that rush. A good ride for me is defined by getting home safe in one piece. I like cruising on small displacement naked bikes. I’d buy a cruiser if the riding position wasn’t so damn awkward. I like how cruisers look but with my dirt bike background it’s just too odd for me.

There is another level of road racing and that would be minigp’s or pitbikes on kart tracks, should be way more affordable and less risky. i’d love to see a jammy noob minigp review :)

Check out texas minigp in houston and denton. Borrow a grom, show up and ride. Endurance races and sprints are on offer. Depending on who my co-riders are, a $150 set of tires lasts 1/2 a season doing 4hr races. Rode one race in denton, tx on brand new tires in the rain. Tires had all the little nubbies still on them after a 4hr race. Are we still won our class despite everyone on the team crashing multiple time. Tremendous fun.

Race mini bikes at your local go kart track. Way less cost and risk. I have a Honda CR80 with 12” wheels and slicks. It’s a blast and I don’t have to take it seriously because it’s just me and my buddies riding children’s motorcycles around in squiggly circles.

Can I afford it? I roadraced for over a decade. AMA, FUSA, WERA and lots of endurance. I loved endurance racing, it was 90% hard work and commitment, 10% satisfaction with a certain joy from sharing the track with some of the fastest guys in the world. For most people that doesn’t matter, I understand that. For me, when things were going my way, I felt I accomplished something that most people will never understand and at the end of the day I could walk up to anyone, backmarker, world champ and enjoy talking about a turn, a bike, our sport, our craft or whatever and just know I’m part of something rare. Could I have done something else with my life? Yes, of course, but some people are going to find, they don’t want anything more because when on those special days and everything clicks it is an amazing sport.

Here in my Environment (I'm racing in the Netherlands and Germany) you have even more crashes at the Trackdays. Even nasty ones which are unnecessary. I think the reason is that on Trackdays the skill level is very different. Therefore you have very high speed differences (e.g. 600 vs 1000 cc or even 400 vs 1000 cc). The next reason is that the technical regulations regarding racing are much stricter. You have for example some crashes on trackdays cause of cooling fluid and engine oil. On race bikes you are only allowed to use water as coolent which isn't so slippery. And you have to secure a lot of screws with wire.

Racing is awesome, it consumes your life....75-79 i raced as lil grom and again from 2006-2012 in vet class so cal MX, WORCS, BIG SIX and VET X..... riding around a course and racing it are like 2 different sports entirely....its alot of work and all you will think about If you can afford too ( not cheap) I would recommend it to anyone.....You feel alive, have a purpose and youll meet the best of people Motorcycle racers are a special breed, i dint even think it matters what type.... Racing is Racing....and yeah you will be nervous....1st one or your 100th

Um, yeah, that. That's why I race shifter karts. A lot cheaper and a LOT less on the risk factor. Tough to beat karts for getting out and going racing. The neighbor's kid did dirt bike racing. But that ended in high school. And yes, nothing builds skills like racing.

You should do a detailed video on coast and prep for a track day at E.C.R. Everyone say do a track day rent a suit and show up but what does that really mean?

I love spectating races but if you asked me if I wanted to get on track and compete I'd say no it is insanely expensive it's way riskier than just taking your street bike for a rip at a track day and I am not a good enough rider to keep myself from eating shit if things get hairy

i got back into it from scratch this year. took a street 14 R1 i picked up for $9k and dumped $5k into plastics, prep, suspension, electronics etc and yet it’s not quite legal yet. roadracing is not for light pocketed individuals

I wanted to race F1 as a seven year old. But let’s face it, too much damn nepotism in professional car racing. I opted for the cheaper motorcycle club racing and ended up sixth in the nation in my class. It is amazing what a bike is capable on a track. I even had an out of body experience winning a race. I knew it was only a hobby. Plenty of people dead, paralyzed or missing limbs. It happens.

Drag racing motocross is a lot easier on the pocket and if your bracket racing with the stock bike you could drag race all day not to mention the small side bets you make with your friends sometimes that can pay for the trip if you win

Hey Yammi I am new to riding, I have been wanting to do longer rides. I ride with a tank bag and will need to ride wit saddle bags or a tail bag if I ride like I want. Are there any tricks, locks or tips you can give on how to do that without worrying that someone won’t steal you stuff when you stop eat or go in a store? Any advice would be appreciated

Get a cheap thin bike cover. It reduces people seeing what is in your package when unattended. It doesn’t prevent things from being able to be stolen. Just makes thenm have to decide if it is worth the effort to find out there may or may not be a good target under the cover. Also good if you run into rain and have to leave the bike parked overnight outside a motel.

I've drag raced national level flat track me and my son and off toaded Baja 500 it's expensive ad heck I mean 40 years ago I was dumping 6g a year dragracing a kaw triple n alky triumph lots of fun great friendships no money Baja was work very little fun dang near died my son's six year flat track career was ten g worth of hella fun and he was good but after he got married n kid realized he wasn't national level n called it a day but I would change a dang thing

A no brainer in my opinion. All you need is a track that allows mini motorcycles. Kart tracks are what you need to find. None market themselves as allowing minibikes but if you call and ask, often you will hear the magic words: yes, we do!

Highly recommend the 765- fantastic midrange on the street and great suspension for the track. Can pick one up for $14.5/$15K out the door in the eastern U.S.

Community man. Seen it happen dozens of times over the years. I’ve been on both sides of it. I’ve packed up trailers and driven them to someone’s house as well as had people do it for me. If you truly knew this world, you’d know this is a non issue.

I had to give up my ambition to become a racer even before had a chance to touch even a modest pocket bike , because my father is too lazy to work. A sloth with audacity to verbally trash the ambition of his son, while everyday is too busy criticising government's economic policy and acting like a social justice warrior. What makes anyone think a professional race team owner, principal, or manager in any race series will hire someone who can only afford to start pocket bike at 40 years old and race bikes 5 years later, all with his own money? I can't imagine a race team in Moto3, Moto2, MotoGP, WSS, WSBK, MotoAmerica, BSB, All-Japan Road Racing, ASB, nor Spanish Championship hire a 50 year old as a debutante be it one off or full season.

What it takes is being either A Being ultra naturally talented and driven which will get you noticed and supported sooner or later . B RICH in which case it does not matter if you have real talent or C just hopelessly devoted to it above all else practical in your life even though you will never really have enough money to do it right or enough raw talent to do it well but you just love it it is your life so nothing else matters

I've been saying this for years. They need to start producing real racing bikes... Just like MX bikes, around $8000 max, brand new, coming with a set of slicks from the factory. Using expensive, bogus street "supersport" crap has priced everyone out of the market. And for road racing, making shit affordable for upcoming riders involves using two stroke engines. Using a YZ250 two stroke, 50hp single, 100hp twin, 150hp triple. All extremely lightweight actual racing bikes. Contemporary 'super sport' bikes are real shit whether anyone is smart enough to notice or not.

They definitely allow you to buy track variants of the bike at least yamaha has track variants with just about all tidbits needed fot national supersport standards. As for smaller "less expensive bikes" , manufacturers like ohvale exist. The options are out there, but racing motorcycles is niche. Most of the bikes on the market ARE damn near track specification if not on point and are phenomenal for a full range of riders

Motocross is the cheapest racing available, you get crazy race days and cool hardworking people to meet that will help you with anything and everything Motocross because they love it so much, there is also no race prepping to do, buy a 250f or 450f if your a crazy person new or used, get the service manual and keep up on maintenance, on average in gas, bike payment, entree fees and maintenance with food I spend about $300 for a race weekend on average and in the off season I spend about $1000 in making my bike new again for the next season. You can be 100% safe if you just relax your not going to win much of anything for the first year, have your goal be perfect technique for an entire race, watch aj catenzaro for how to ride and follow it to the letter. "But novice should be easy" no there are riders in novice that will go pro in a year so just hang up that hope of winning the first race, your just going to get hurt, enjoy racing the people at your pace and watch yourself improve.

Except I prepared about $3k a weekend for a race budget. About $1k for tires, $1k for fluid changes and gas, $1k for replacement parts and pit expenses. This is for 600cc class racing(rip soon due to twins). I used to be a clown who would put 300v oil in his street bikes and NOW I really cry over that. I wasted so much fucking good money on oil youll only see the benefit of on the track, on useless street miles. This doesnt include dair repacks, or travel expenses.

Racing is expensive and dangerous, but it is extremely fun. I usually paid $900-$1200 easily per race weekend. Had a $50k hospital bill due to a nasty wreck that almost took my life. Is it worth club racing? Depends how thirsty you are if you want to hit pro and race motoamerica. If you're just doing it for fun and I honestly don't think there is a benefit except for bragging/ego rights.

Well there are factors Vehicle: a high performance motorcycle is *generally* cheaper than a high performance car, but not always, depends on your level. Consumables: gas, tires, oil, parts, repairs, again, bikes are probably *generally* cheaper here, but harder to say for sure, those tires burn up quick. The race itself: participation fees and the logistics of spending a couple days at a track, probably about the same? Bike might be a little cheaper but I doubt it. Ultimately, racing bikes vs racing cars is very different, and you shouldn’t get into that type of sport because “it was cheaper” the people that go and do this do it because it’s a type of experience you cannot replicate anywhere else, the cost doesn’t really matter.

If I had a full fledged superbike instead of my trusty old z1000 I’d whoop on em harder. A fully tuned z1000 is a good match for cars like aventadors and the new mcclarens and heavy tune gtrs. They all come out about equal until the Z runs out of gear. The superbikes come on song at 100mph plus and literally sail away from 1500hp gtrs
