Great topic, I was scammed with a fake Fendi peekaboo, my first purchase into luxury. I saved for 12 months for a bag found one in good condition from EBay, used it for a few years until one day a lady that worked for fendi told me it was a fake and showed me why. I was so upset, I felt like an fool. Years later I now have the real thing and know the difference. But I still get so upset when I think of the bag I looked after and was proud of for years.💰

Wonderful video, somehow I think I missed your poll on IG. I used to think I will feel icky caring a fake but I actually don’t. I don’t even think of them as fakes. I have few authentic bags, mostly LV and I regret buying them and wasting my money on them because they are no longer my taste ( apart from PM). I feel like luxury bags became like fast fashion. It is just too much. Trends change so much that even bags previously considered classics are outdated nowadays. I am trying to be thoughtful and buy 2 bags a year. I am happy I paid only 10% of authentic price and have these beauties I can enjoy. 💰

I looked into buying a replica piece of Bulgari/Cartier bracelet made supposedly from 18k gold as well, but for half the cost. I thought to myself, well that price makes sense. That's probably about the price of the brand markup. But I just couldn't get over the idea of paying thousands of dollars for a fake without a way to verify the materials. So I just broke down and got the real thing. Now I have an authentic piece forever in my family. I don't regret it.

Also to add, someone close to me worked at a big London department store and people constantly tried to return counterfeit handbags, they have a whole team working on this issue. The other big issue they work with is people buying an item and then using it several times including designer clothing and then returning it to store saying there was an issue with it. Some people have no scruples. Fakes are a real battle for luxury retailers too

Jumping in b4 I finish the vid to say that the idea of “who is this for?” When talking about fakes really resonates with me, and is a great articulation of how I feel about it. At the end of the day, there’s a whole slew of emotional baggage attached to luxury shopping and some brands for me that buying and wearing them is for me, and my pleasure, and my perception of myself; all of that is absent when buying and wearing a fake, which turns the experience into other pole’s perceptions about me rather than what I actually enjoy.

I just don’t understand why people who say that they don’t want to pay the price charged by luxury houses don’t just buy from cheaper brands and on sale. You can get good quality stuff from legitimate businesses that simply have lower prices. This argument just doesn’t make sense to me. You just want to flex and pretend you are wealthier than you are, not caring about who pays the price down the line for your choices
@DaylesAddiction

It definitely doesn’t wash with me but I can see that people want the ‘fashion’ piece and what it represents not the quality or the genuineness or the luxury element.

I buy LV because I love the monogram print. If I couldn’t afford it I would still love it and want it. I would consider fakes. We pay for the brand name. A huge premium for the brand name. If these brands charged a fair or reasonable price it would take a bite out of the fact industry.

Superfakes and realfakes are made by single trade craftspeople who realised they get paid more for the same labour when they sell direct to consumer. How is it ethical for a luxury brand to sell a bag for 20k when the people making the bags are being paid a tiny fraction of that? How is it more ethical to put more profit into the pocket of the billion dollar fashion house than it is to give that money direct to the person who made it?

I actually watched this video twice - first of all, this video deserves many more views but I also wanted to take some time to think about this topic as I simply never dived deeper into why I truly would not buy fake luxury - it was just a no right away (I wasn‘t answering your open poll questions). The most prominent argument for me is that there will be no joy for me if I just go for the fake. Because my primary motivation to buy these things is to make me happy with all their beautiful features. It doesn‘t matter to me that the rest of the world might never know the truth - I know it, that‘s what counts and I will always see this item with different eyes. So this ties in with several points you mentioned in the beginning. This video is so well done - always great to see how you are interacting with your community and how it results in informative videos like this. It definitely opened more perspectives to me - without judging any of them but giving food for thought. Personally, I do not want to judge anyone on how they are spending their money (just as I do not want to be judged that I’m ‚wasting‘ money for luxury). 💰💰💰 I liked what you said about your DocMartens: the real luxury good means something and not the illusion of it - absolutely agree on that!

Hi Dayle, new subscriber here! I just came across your channel today and have been watching in the last hour or so. Great content and I appreciate your insightful opinions and honesty! …This specific topic really made me think. Since I didn’t have a chance to participate your IG poll, I want to share my own experience here. I have just dipped my feet into the luxury handbag world less than two years ago. I have a small collection now that I am very happy about…but what started this journey was actually a high-quality dupe of a limited edition Dior D-Lite bag. Given that I have never purchased anything fake in my previous life (up to the point of that Dior D-Lite), I struggled quite a bit about whether to buy it or not. I even watched all the videos, documentaries and read articles about counterfeit industry that I could find hoping to STOP me from buying that dupe (apparently that didn’t work, lol)…Now thinking back, my reasons of purchasing the dupe were pretty much all the things you mentioned in the video, and more. 1. when I first saw the Dior D-lite bags, I felt in love with the design and the whole vibe of that collection. NOT at all because the name of Dior or luxury, purely the size, embroidery, pattern, color. With that said, I wasn’t ready to drop 4K on a fabric bag just for the brand or status. 2. Me and my husband both work and are making a decent living. We are very good at saving. Up to that point, I haven’t bought new clothes, shoes, bags for years. So if I wanted the real thing, I could easily afford it but I never owned an luxury handbag up to that point and couldn’t justify to pay more than $500 on ANY bag, let alone a fabric trendy bag from a brand that I haven’t built understanding and relationship on. 3. After I tried to stop myself from wanting it and buying the dupe (unsuccessfully), I slowly started to research and to compare the source of dupes. When I found one, I actually asked the seller if they could sell me an item WITHOUT the Dior logo/tag cause I have no intention of carry the brand name for status and I don’t like the ideas of faking someone I am not. (Of course the answer was no 😂) 4. By then, I have watched so many real vs. fake comparison videos on RU-vid. My obsession grew into more of the curiosity. I felt like even I hated the idea of supporting the counterfeit business, I should at least get ONE to see HOW good exactly this “high quality” dupe is. 5. My last step was to go to the Dior Boutique to look at and feel the real thing. I went and I touched the bags. My hope was the flawless real thing would make me give up the idea of buying replica. However, the real D-Lite was NOT flawless to be honest. At this point, my obsession of this design already became unhealthy I guess. I felt like if I don’t just go ahead and buy it, I would be thinking about it non stop. So I pulled the trigger. Fast forward, I received the bag and I LOVED it. I am not kidding, the quality and the craftsmanship is very impressive considering I did intensive studies and research on the real thing…With that said tho, as much as I am happy about this duplicate piece, I only carried it out briefly twice and decided that I would never buy fakes again. The main reason is something you shared in this video, I don’t want people to associate me with counterfeit industry or someone who is so superficial and fake. Even if no one would judge or care, it’s in my own head. I am not even into fashion or luxury. I just like colorful and cute things 😂. However, somehow this Dior research started my genuine curiosity of other luxury brands and designs so I am now hooked with high-end handbags, lol…Anyways, I just want to share, to me it was a long and hard mental struggle for that ONE dupe purchase. I did it. I won’t do it again. The experience was educational to me. It helped me to discover/realize something I didn’t know about myself. I learned a lot (about the brands, the products, the industry, myself…) through the entire process. And it started a new hobby that I enjoy doing and inspired me in many other ways…

This was a really thought provoking video Dayle. I have never bought fakes because for me it’s an internal issue. I would feel “fake” and even get a slightly sick feeling which would negate the whole purpose of saving money by carrying or using those items even if people though they were real. But that’s me and not everyone else so people can do what they want. I had a work-friend who only wore fakes top to bottom. She would get compliments and take them happily so it’s really a personal choice. I’m also someone afraid to buy online due to my fear of being scammed so all my items come from the stores. A good friend just found out her Chanel bag was a fake and she was mortified that she used it for over 10 years not knowing this and her poor husband spent thousands on this gift for her. The whole ethical argument is also an issue for me of course (child labour etc.) but in the end we all have to do what makes us comfortable:). By the way, your hair looks beautiful this length 🙌 💰💰💰💰

Interesting video Dayle. I too waited until I was 30ish before I could afford any luxury bags but never bought a fake. I waited until I could afford - not knowing in those early years if I would ever get there but either way I still didn't ever want to buy fakes even though many of my friends did. I was labelled as a snob for not buying fakes but I stuck to my own feelings regardless. Even though I was judged for not buying fakes I never and would never judge someone else for buying whatever they choose be it fake or not. The reason I have not ever bought a fake is that because I have no first hand knowledge of the background of where these items are from or what crimes they may feed into I don't want to be a part of it. I don't judge others for buying fakes as they are grown adults who can make their own decisions and it is not for me to tell anyone else what to do. However it is not something I would ever do myself. I think the fake market promotes dishonesty like you say when someone tries to dupe someone else with a fake when they think they are buying a real item - this is so wrong, If someone chooses to buy fakes then that is their decision but when someone is trying to buy a real item on the resale market for eg and is sold a fake then that is terrible and that is why I don't agree with any part of the industry or system regarding replicas or fakes. It is impossible to police or to stop fully so that is why I stick to saving up and buying from store where you have a much better chance of ensuring you are buying the real thing.

My cousin knows I like things like this and was giving me “luxury items” she purchased from the ‘fashion’ district in Los Angeles when she visited. She’s given me fake Gucci sandals, fake luxury shirts, and a few fake LV bags. Have I worn any of them? No. I just can’t. They’re so poorly made and obviously not real. I just feel so inauthentic wearing them when I have real luxury items I’ve purchased from the boutique. I haven’t quite figured out how to say I don’t want her to give me anymore of these items 🙈. I grew up in a home where clothes were bought from Goodwill and thrifted, we had powdered milk at times when we couldn't afford real. I always "settled" for something "just like" what every body else had. So, if I own things now...I own what *I* want to own and it is the real thing...not something "just like" it. That being said...like you...I may notice it...but that is it when someone else has a fake...I figure they have a reason they have purchased it....and I just want to show some grace....since it isn't about what we have...but who we are. 💕💕

My parents weren’t wealthy and I wanted to be “cool” so I bought a fake Gucci bag for $20. I haven’t bought any fakes since then and never will. Similar to your perspective, I don’t believe in buying fakes (or contemporary brands) because I believe it is stealing from the intellectual property (design, concept, etc) of the actual designers of the fashion houses. It may not be a popular opinion, but that’s what I believe. I’d rather save my money for actual and authentic items. 💁🏻‍♀️

Great video, I appreciated the thought you took in compiling your opinions and experiences! To add to the conversation, there were a lot of comments that seemed to focus on how ‘luxury brands participate in the same practices’ without evidence being offered. I work in supply chain and I would just like to say that, while I have not read about any investigations that exposed child labor, there are a lot of legal loopholes about what qualifies as “made within” a country. For example, if I was in the business of selling purses, if I sourced all of my material from an impoverished country, had all of the labor done to stitch the leather sides, pockets, handles, and the logo into the bag, and then shipped that into the United States to apply a zipper… that is not a bag that I can legally say is made in the US. That makes sense! But not every country has those assembly laws. A lot of sneaker companies have gotten into trouble with dark supply chains, and Walmart has had several busts where they were selling clothing that had secretly been made from banned manufacturers that used child labor. This doesn’t justify replica bag sales, but I think that’s what those comments were getting at. The only “bust” I’m aware of was on a recent fur supply chain for luxury coats where the animal skins were being imported from China and not France at a fraction of the price. The buyer claimed they had been lied to and was unaware of the origins of those furs. In any case, when you can only buy something with cash, and you see that in New York City with fake bags, the distributor is free to launder that money. It’s untraceable. Full disclosure, I bought a few fakes when I was younger. Part of me thinks that I’d still get a fake to test if I’d use a bag silhouette enough to justify the real thing. Again, great video and I’m so glad I was able to watch 😊 new fan!

They designed themselves, you could design a bag with them, but they could also make a Dior Saddle bag for you on the spot, includung nice Dior hardware. There was quite a line outside of people waiting for their bag and the vast majority of them went for a 'Dior' I have to say quite honestly I don't mind counterfeiting this way very much , I was even a little impressed with the idea of a handmade bag that you literally stand next to when they make it. The women made good money, had their own business and were good at what they made. Unfortunately I also know that this was an exception and most fackes are not produced this way.

Just to preface, I’m not a luxury bag owner, but only a long term admirer of the entire luxury market (from design, craftsmanship to marketing). I own 3 bags, all of them are Lancel, all under 500€ and I couldn’t be happier. Because the quality is fantastic, really like the design, and there’s no heavy branding. Because of the quality, I’m confident that I can put together every day, my bags don’t have loose threads etc. I don’t have a luxe bag, but I feel luxe and confident. I don’t want and can’t spend the mid-sized used car money on a handbag and I won’t, but by no means I will by a fake. 💰 On the other side, I really like home design and furniture. And it hurts my heart to buy a fake item when the original is so, design-wise, perfect, ingenious, and work of art. I cannot do it to a designer, he deserves a reward for his product. Instead of big items, I buy trinkets to pay the honors and to enjoy the design. However, I perfectly understand the „I was young and didn’t know better“, but have a little understanding for other reasons.

Of course the main reason is the horrific child labour or anyone else who is forced into this labour to put food on their table, pay their bills etc. It is just disgusting. I could never go out of my house with a clear conscience and I would be hiding it under my clothing as I would think it would stick out like a sore thumb that it was fake. I would feel so self conscious. I just don't know how anyone can 'enjoy' their fakes. It was so good to wake up to one of your videos . I am watching it as I prepare to go to hospital for hopefully my last spinal surgery. So you made my day. Thank you Dayle. Much love. Jenni. XX💜💚

💰 What a great video and an in-depth analysis into this topic. I relate to your reasoning on why you don’t buy fakes. I come from a very modest background. When I was in school, I would walk through the designer district and look at all the beautiful clothes and bags in the displays. I promised myself that one day I would be walking in and buying! It actually gave me motivation to keep at it! I do feel a sense of “I’ve made it” when I buy these luxurious things. That’s probably also why I prefer in-store shopping rather than online shopping or resale. I do think we should not judge anyone for wearing/carrying fakes. We don’t know their circumstances, whether they even know it is a fake, or whether they even know they are carrying a “designer” replica. Honestly, there are a lot of people who may know the most popular brands (LV, Gucci, and the like) but they may see a cool Loewe Puzzle replica and simply just see a cool shaped bag to buy.

Completely agree with so much of your comment. I too am from a modest background and thoroughly enjoy my “hobby/ interest” in luxury. More so I agree with the concept of judgement and reserving opinion. I find it really interesting when people become defensive of fashion houses and intellectual property (points I generally agree with) that are delivered in a tone of disrespect or judgement of individuals. I think the conversation can remain respectful without questioning intellect or integrity of consumers who either chose or inadvertently purchase inauthentic items. I’ve read and heard (on other posts and threads of other content creators) some really unpleasant commentary. It confounds me that they can defend global organizations with passion and fierce loyalty whilst attacking people unknown to them for choices that in reality don’t greatly affect them

Interesting topics and discussion, and I agree on your point at the latter part of the video. It’s one thing if you just buy fakes for your own use but when it goes to the extent that you want to scam unsuspecting customers, that’s really criminal behaviour territory already. I have seen IG accounts promoting super grade fakes (everything replicated down to boxes and dustbags), and after knowing the existence of such accounts I’m reluctant of buying preloved as you just never know if it’s a super fake being sold🙁 If I can’t afford the real thing, I think I will just live without the bag, or alternatively purchase a dupe/ no brand bag with a similar look instead of a fake. I feel there’s more integrity in that and if people judge me for not being able to afford luxury bags, so be it.

💰💰Great topic! I missed the survey. It was very interesting to hear why people would consider buying or bought fakes. Both my parents were immigrants and had to build up a new life in North America. We were very frugal. I was brought up with the mentality to save for the things you want. I only started buying luxury designer brands a few years ago in my early 40's because I felt I could allow myself to do so. Prior to that I never considered fakes due to ethical reasons and I would rather save for the real item. I can appreciate that sometimes no matter how much saving one does, you may never be able to save up enough for the item you want or the price doesn't seem justified but I would rather buy a similar style/dupe that is cheaper than the luxury version and instead of a fake or super fake again for ethical reasons and only if I was sure I was never going to get or it seemed highly unlikely I would get the real item. With handbags I think there are only so many shapes you can get so a lot of the shapes are dupes by contemporary brands of designer luxury or designer luxury of contemporary brands or by designer luxury brands of each other. Except for the Coach Fall 2023 upcoming release... I have never seen a four leaf clover bag! Also for me, if I can't afford it now, why do I need something that is fake to remind me of the brand item I can't get at the moment? I think I would feel horrible when wearing the item or looking at it as a reminder that I couldn't get the item from the brand I really wanted and just settled with a fake giving the perception to others who may not suspect anything that it is the real thing when it is not. No matter what people say, impressions do matter. It is innate. And if I can't get the brand item, I don't need a fake to fill that void because in my mind it was not meant to be at that time. Even when I consider a dupe, I give it a lot of consideration because I don't like to buy too many things and then potentially consider of getting rid of the dupes should I get the real thing. But, dupe or fake, it still costs money which I can either save or use it to buy something else I love. At the end of the day it is how you feel when you wear your bag dupe or authentic but I would never feel good about a fake bag no matter what so I personally would never buy a fake or superfake. I think it is easy for some to say that fakes keep children working compared to the alternative but as a society, groups or the country's government should be doing something to eliminate/reduce the alternative and I think those consumers are condoning the behavior by creating a demand for production of the fakes. Sure the fake bags may have already been made but consumers don't have to buy them then this way the producers of fake bag would take a loss. Individually this would mean nothing/little but collectively I'm sure it would have an impact. There most likely are some unethical practices when we purchase from the real brands but I don't feel based on what I know that it is to the same degree. The brands are still required to show transparency about the product but not with producers of fakes as far as I have seen/understand so the real brands would be more accountable for their practices and be required/more inclined to correct their actions, not producers of fakes. Ethics is not always black and white but varying shades of grey and making an ethical decision usually requires choosing an option that is informed/researched with not so much grey. I also believe what credible media says about the unethical practices in creating fakes and superfakes and as for proof, I believe there will be none except testimonies because no producer of fakes is going to advertise their business as such and their practices or leave any "paper" trail to incriminate themselves. You brought up some excellent points at the end about deception and profit for self-interests which I think is the bigger issue and that is where governments, associations, groups, and/or corporations need to step in to help protect the buyer and the corporation/business interest aside from the consumer also doing their own research to protect themselves as much as they can. It is a scary thing to think that you could go to the boutique and may be potentially sold a fake that was previously returned/exchanged by someone else for their profit putting both the consumer and the business at a loss. I'm sorry for the long comment but it is a great topic for discussion since there are so many facets to it. Hope you have a great day! xx

You mentioned there are varying degrees of counterfeit items. If one is purchasing a counterfeit bag to ‘try it out’, it may provide some information in terms of the style and shape; however, a large part of how a bag feels and functions IS the quality of materials from which it’s made. I’m not sure a fake would provide enough information. Also, I know some who purchased an authentic bag but told certain people it was a fake to avoid judgement. These days, there are laws that oblige big companies to produce their goods ethically (eg - Modern Slavery laws, Corruption laws) and big companies take a huge risk, both in terms of the law and reputation, if they do not do the right thing. As someone who works in this space, and has for some time, my experience is that big business these days is, on the whole, taking their obligations seriously. I know that if I buy genuine items, and if it turns out big co hasn’t been doing the right thing, there are repercussions for the company. 💰

Such an interesting video, glad you read the responses out loud so we could get a sense of opinions. I think most people would agree that on some level wearing designer is a flex and usually a flex that you’ve worked hard enough to afford better quality items. Now if you’re buying fakes I feel like you’re really trying to signal to others how much money you (don’t) have. And it’s odd because no one should feel this overwhelming need to pretend to have or be something they are not. And that goes for these self made women in the article you mentioned, if they thought Hermes is a scam than buy another handbag that is worth it’s value (to those individuals). Because you’re still falling into the trap of wanting to BE a part of that brand and clearly they think it signals something very important to those who are in their presence. As for the unethical aspect of counterfeits, it’s sad. It’s sad that the argument is “ well if everyone is being mistreated, I might as well buy the cheaper item because the workers aren’t getting fair treatment either way.” If that’s how someone really feels than they shouldn’t be buying luxury or a luxury fake period! But clearly the people who feel like it’s all the same don’t actually care about the humans behind the product. They simply care about the savings being passed off to them and that’s a shame. 👎🏽

A really good video. I think the brand that is copied the most right now seems to be Hermes. One of the reasons for this is because the Birkin and Kelly have a simple design without a lining etc. Chanel stamped out a lot of counterfeit bags about 15 years ago ( many companies in Asia were doing this) and so there are fewer direct copies of Chanel now. I also think a lot of the top designers do copy each other’s handbag designs too much. They need to make any bag influenced by the design of another bag have much more distinct differences so that it is not a copy of another bag by another design house.

Absolutely, the lack of access to the Hermes bags drives the fake market too, I bet that was an unexpected issue with their marketing approach.

Thanks for highlighting this subject Dayle! for me the outstanding problem is child labour and sweat shop labour. Some of these people and children are enslaved and don't get paid anything so the alternative is freedom, so no they are not getting any money for being a slave. Another issue is the stealing of intellectual property. I realise that companies like LMVH make enormous amounts of money but it still doesn't give anyone the right to counterfeit and subsequently make money from their creative endeavours. I also blame social media for feeding into the narrative that people need a certain bag or jewellery to feel "complete" or or give the impression of wealth or social status. PS thefakebirkinslayer is a real eye opener!

Since they can afford to purchase as many bags as they wish, multiple bags at a time. As often as they like. BUT, I truly appreciate how you broke this down. I watched the entire video and I felt you have a fair assessment of every angle. I own luxury bags purchase direct from the brands. Some I purchase preloved with the expectation they were authentic. No, I would never buy fakes. I have had fakes offered to me in the past when abroad and I can see that it could be tempting, I never will; it is just unethical and exploitative. When I can’t afford buying, I don’t simple. I strongly believe in design rights as well and no one should be copying originals whether luxury designers or not - this also goes the other way, where big brands copy small upcoming designers, that isn’t ethical either - hire the new designer or buy their designs. Unfortunately both purchasing fakes and copying others happens all the time - and some people genuinely think it is ok. It just isn’t. It is also why I am worried about preloved, I have huge lists on several websites of items that I would love to own but I am worried about getting scammed by someone and frankly, I would be gutted - I rather wait until I can afford that item that I really want - and I love the luxury experience in store, it makes it special. Also when I can then buy that item, it is a real honour and it feels very special. Great video, thanks Dayle ❤

But with hindsight knowing what I know they definitely weren’t. I purchased through eBay as this was the only place I could access luxury at the time - there were no boutiques in my area then. They were actually very good quality fakes and the quality of them would certainly concern me purchasing anything vintage of a similar age. Hi Dalye, i watched this video twice. Well said. I love it. But i have to be honest with you that i bought a replica Chanel Mini Square. I just want to try out if the size fits my lifestyle before investing authentic one (I already had 4 Chanel bags). I am glad that i did not buy authentic one as it does not fit my lifestlye. I still prefer mini rectangular. The replica i bought will be my first and last bag. It is very weird to carry a fake bag. I sometimes do worry people will keep staring at my fake bag. The feeling is so much different when you carry authentic vs fake one.

Very interesting video Dayle, and I really liked your approach! This is not a comment in support of counterfeit items, but at the same time, I have a hard time getting on board with comments judging the ethics of fake bags while also dropping tens of thousands of dollars in Chanel, whose founder was a raging Nazi, misogynist and antisemit. I don't doubt that at least some counterfeit items fund illegal activities, but people need to take a closer look at what they consider to be the height of luxury, because there's a lot of real problems there too... I do, of course, think that it's completely unethical to try and sell a fake bag as real, regardless of where/how it was made.
@DaylesAddiction
@DaylesAddiction Год назад
Yes Athina, there is a valid argument there definitely. How long after the founder of Chanel dying does a brand take to shake the association? can it ever?

I think of fake products as identity theft. The persons can make inspirational pieces/dupes. That is fine. Honestly, sometimes an inspirational designer executes the design better.…. I don’t believe that spending a lot of money equals luxury. Luxury is attention to details, quality materials, using the quality materials so I can interact with the materials, and those materials lasting a long time. Sometimes, high dollar luxury items are not worth the price because the enamel goes bad quickly vs fine jewelry, it is canvas /pressed cotton vs leather, or the finishes on leather items ruin my ability to enjoy the fill grain or top grain leather. Sometimes, a smaller business leather artisan or seamstress/seamster gives more attention to the material, more attention to interacting with the leather or fabrics and the items can be made to your specifications.
@DaylesAddiction
@DaylesAddiction Год назад
also true- I think it appears a rare combination though for a leather master to come up with desired designs - I guess that’s why the houses have it covered as huge teams of designers come up with the designs and then work with craftsmen on execution and marketing to work our what they can charge, profit margins etc
@RosesRawReality
@RosesRawReality Год назад
💰 I personally don’t see myself buying a fake. If I couldn’t afford a bag but I loved it, I would buy a “dupe” or just save for the real deal. It’s so much more satisfying knowing your item is real. After a personal experience I had, I am terrified I’m going to waste my hard earned money on a fake thinking it’s the real deal, and it sucks that I have to worry about that even buying from the boutique. Although I do understand when you are spending 5 figures on a bag, you might want to test it out on a fake to make sure you really love the bag. Other than that it seems most people have nefarious intentions when buying fakes. So I prefer to stay awake from that scene.

For some reason I didn't see your instagram post, so I didn't comment on it. Years ago, in my mid-20s my old BF gave me a fake LV purse. I never wore it out in public because I just knew it was fake (I was too shy to ask him). He had been to China for a work trip. The bag was hobo style, orange, and in "epi leather". I only recently got rid of it by donating it. Another time, my mom's friend got her a fake Burberry purse. My mom wore it a lot. Every time I was with her out in public i'd cringe, I felt like everyone was staring at us and the fake bag. lol I would never buy fake luxury because it's inauthentic and feels like you're buying from someone that stole a style and name brand. I understand knock-offs but not fakes. I don't know if I believe the reasoning behind why luxury brands don't want us to buy fakes. Child labor is in a lot of brands, i bet, not just fakes. My dad had to leave school when he was 9 years old to work and help his family survive. He and his older brother went through hell when they were kids. One reason I think he felt like he could never "rest" or just sit down and relax. He was always working, feeling like he couldn't sit down cause someone needed something he had to pay for. So sad. RIP to them both.

For me having the genuine piece gives me a very specific feeling when I wear it/carry it. A fake wouldn’t give me the same feeling so I wouldn’t carry it. I’ve never looked deeply into what these companies fund because I don’t buy fakes, but it is illegal in terms of stealing someone’s intellectual property. If I wanted to try out a style i guess I would maybe buy a dupe or something similar until I decided. But if I really loved the piece I would just buy the real piece and not care if it would work because if I loved it I would make it work. Fakes are just not for me.

Yes I've never considered it as an alternative to try or save money and hence hadn't considered the ethical argument as it wasn't something I needed to. And if i like the bag and wear it i will but the original version and donate the fake one . In addition unfortunately in my country there isnt a big hype around luxury bags and wearing luxury, so most of the time you can see a lot of people wearing fake bags and since there isnt any hype around luxury )and I don’t think they even care and know enough ) no one notices and no one even care . I think the only people who care are the ones how buy luxury and understand it. Sometimes i get a little bit annoyed that since fake bags is pretty common in my country people wil immediately assume that my bag is fake when its not. To me it’s not about the brand….but the pieces that I’m drawn too….the style…and i’d like to purchase that piece from the person that was hired to design them….which is likely to be the the big fashion houses…..and not the 2nd…3rd….10 iteration of that design from the high-street. The designers are the talented ppl….and their hired and supported financially by most obviously the larger fashion houses x

So some years ago I had bought this kind of retainer mouthguard thing from Aliexpress. It was cheap and I didn’t want to spend a lot on something like that. The next day I started getting all these ads for different companies, some more expensive than others for this exact set of mouth liners/mouth guards. I told myself that that can’t be true and probably the Aliexpress were a knock off. So I got them in and they came in the exact packaging and everything as the more expensive ones. So I bought the more expensive ones off Amazon because I knew I could return them. They were the exact same thing I looked more into it and found out they were made in China. That day, I realized that almost everything is made in China and either direct shipped here or the parts of it are made in China shipped here and then put together here just for the reason that people can say it was made in America. I realize that I was being a fool, thinking that these expensive things were somehow better than the cheaper ones just because a company was selling it for more. I just decided that I wasn’t going to fall for jokes like that and spend all my hard earned money on things like that just because I wanted to“get the best thing.

I personally would be embarrassed to sport a fake because there is always someone who knows everything about the details of an authentic handbag for one, and I would not want to support whatever is going on to create these fake bags. You want to spend less, buy preloved, some do layaway, or join a purse selling group, have your bag authenticated and that way you have the real deal.

I am one of those who bought a fake when I was younger mainly because I couldn’t justify the price of the real thing and I really just liked the design of it. Needless to say, it only lasted a year 😅 The other conversation I have encountered would have to be about dupes that yes, don’t have the logo, but are 1:1 copies of the design of the original. Yes, it makes people feel not as guilty but the outright copying makes me feel like it’s in a gray area. Though honestly, I probably wouldn’t buy that, either.

Oh dupes here are pretty common. Esp the 1:1 ones. I’ve seen copies of the Celine Box Bag, Mini Lindy, even the Puzzle (from a Singapore-based brand). All I they lack is the logo. I don’t mind buying dupes that have a slightly different design (like my Demellier Vancouver); but the ones like what Teddy Blake did a few years back with the B and K (which they’ve stopped doing), there’s just something icky for me about those as well. Yeah, they’re real leather, but copying a design down to the last detail… just doesn’t sit right with me. But it will fall on the gray area. It just depends on the person buying it.. whatever soothes their conscience

I have purchased some luxury bags and have been tempted to buy some replicas. A while back, I saw a movie about the Gucci family, and one of the wives of the owners discovered fake bags being sold in the street. She was furious. When she reported this to the company, they said “Don’t worry, we make those too! They may not be the same quality, but maybe they buy it just for beauty! And why shouldn’t someone who can’t afford luxury not be able to have a bag that is beautiful too! And, when they use these bags they are advertising for us that so many people love these bags. Food for thought! I could never afford to buy an Kelly or a Birken bag, especially at my age. And I don’t like the game they play that you have to buy a whole bunch of expensive stuff that maybe you don’t need, just to have a bag offered to them!!!! If I saw a replica bag of Hermes that was a decent quality, I would buy it, knowing it was a replica of course.

I don’t get the ‚it’s a bag, it does what it’s supposed to’ narrative - if so, why get a fake instead of a different design? Same for toiletries - you can get a similiar style that doesn’t say LV. Very interesting video! What I found most “upsetting” in the justifications for buying counterfeits were (1) a lack of trust in media reports about how counterfeit goods fund other serious illegal activities, and (2) a belief that even if counterfeit operations do fund those activities, it’s no worse than what legitimate brands do. On the former point, I’m just tired of living in a “post-fact” world. Multiple sources, including those media sources you mentioned and also reports prepared by governmental agencies (like my own country’s U.S. Department of Homeland Security) and the U.N. have published evidence of what counterfeit goods are funding, and anyone not believing that is, I guess, unreachable by facts. And if their argument is that at least some of these are just businesses trying to make a living, the point is that these people will never know for sure, because the goods are not flowing through open commercial channels with visibility to governmental authorities and disclosure of their practices, working conditions and financial accounting. Second, as to the point about being no worse than what legitimate brands do: yes, there is the point that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. But there are degrees to all of this: buying products that fund terroristic acts or similar is, I think, able to be classified as morally worse. And those counterfeit operations are not subject to the governmental sanction, or PR shaming (whichever comes first), that legitimate multinational corporations are when something like the Foxconn working conditions for iPhone manufacturing are uncovered. Anyway, my two cents. Great discussion.

Especially if I don’t want to draw attention in a place that I am going. I wear my higher end designer bags where I know that won’t get damaged or appropriate times and places. Knock offs I run into are horrible quality and I would not go down that road- if you are going to drop thousands on a high end fake- just bite the bullet and get what you really want at the boutique. I waited many years before I bought my first Chanel, Lv etc Super happy I waited until I could be in a financial situation where I can afford and enjoy them.
