Aren't you tired of hitting the ball on the frame? I know it can be incredibly frustrating. But what factors cause this to happen? What can you do to hit the center of the strings every single time? Should we just watch the ball or is there more to it then that? What are the benefits of hitting the strings? All these questions answered and much more! You will find out why watching the ball is not the best advice. I'll give you drills for every stroke to help you with the quality of your contact. You will enjoy tennis more then ever, after all, we play for the feeling of when we hit the ball in the sweet spot. You will see how the great Roger Federer watches the ball. You dont wanna miss this!

I had to come back and say thank you. I have a tendency to want to see where my shot is going and I end up hitting long. Your tip about reading the writing on the ball, I tried it in a match and it worked great! I now focus on the ball more instead of where I'm hitting. You have a new fan and another subscriber.

This secret I hd found and kept it for 16 yrs. When Federer appeared in 2003. I had predicted that he would win 23-26 Grand slam titles... You know, all my friends said I was crazy. Because at that time , 14 was the record. You are right, no player watches the ball like Federer in the tennis history, even today we copied him for up to decade. (Nadal is copying him too) All you said in this video, is the RESULT, I mean watching(I prefer capturing)the contact point,and close the eye right after it , both are the RESULT.(Federer closing his eyes after the IMPACT is the natural reaction , if you concentrate and relax of watching a impact in front of you within few feet,you will find yourself close your eyes right after it naturally too.) The RESULT of what? That's is the real secret of Federer 's success. It is his hitting consciousness. If you want to know his hitting consciousness, just see the picture of how the baseball player 'a eyes when they are hitting the ball. (baseball player has no landing target where they want to hit to, so every pro baseball player can watch the contact point.) In one sentence, Federer's mind is finding where the ball, instead of where the ball he want to hit to, Even he actually is aiming somewhere. How can he "aiming somewhere without thinking somewhere? Just think about how you attack people 's weak second serve? Yes, you could plan which direction you want to hit BEFORE your opponents hitting the ball.

Jeremy, I have a tip for you regarding watching contact. It is almost impossible to watch the ball contact the front of the strings of the racket because one is always behind the ball. What is much easier is to watch the back of the racket strings as the ball makes contact. Try it, you'll see it is much easier and you still stay in the moment to ensure you visualize the contact spot, from behind the strings not in front of the strings.

Great video. It really surprises me that this isn't talked about more. There are so many videos on consistency, timing and technique AND every single one of them should include the importance of watching the contact. After all, not watching is the number one reason players miss shots.

Good tips. When I coached I would put large numbers (1 - 9) or letters (A to Z) with a permanent pen on two places on each ball and then ask the student to tell me what number or letter they hit. The kids picked up immediately but the adults took a bit longer because they were not used to watching the ball.
@johnfrost765

Thank you! You are absolutely correct, we need to watch the ball make contact with our racket. But you are performing two more steps prior to your ball contact. You are tracking the ball, watching it bounce and then anticipating or setting up your eyes where the racket will meet the ball. We need to watch the ball bounce and then meet our racket. At the last split second I try to have my eyes focused at the point where my racket makes contact. If you are totally focused on just watching the ball you won't see your racket hit the ball because the ball would have continued past you.

I'd be VERY interested in anyone's comments on this. No one seems to talk about slow vs fast eye movement and how it relates to tracking the ball. On keeping eye on the ball, I think there is a tendency is to look up at the target when your slow switch eye muscles can no longer follow the ball. With a fast moving ball you won't be able to follow it all the way to contact with slow eye movement, there's a point when you need to change to fast twitch eye movement. At that point you have to make sure you shift your view to the contact point, not the target. Next time you're on the court, try to notice how far you can track the ball before your eyes jump to the contact point. I think with practice you can improve it. But my main point is there's a tendency, when you can no longer track with slow twitch, to give up and look to the target rather than to contact.

in addition to positioning and ball recognition, for me, could also be the type of grip you’re using. sometimes the face may be too closed (too western) for balls that kick high to your forehand, for example. or face is too open (too continental) when trying to slice. I’ve had to be more cognizant of the type of grip I’m using for diff types of shots. Great vid!

the "mental toughness" point and wrong posture are so true. In my double, I got anxious b/c the opponents have good serves, poaching, and volleys. I was too concern where to put my return & didn't watch the ball = framed it = lost the point= caused me more panic/confidence issues. At net, when I saw an easy floating ball, I got excited and rush. My posture was incorrect and I ended up over hitting the ball (upper body moving too much, hit the bottom of the ball instead of the middle/top of the ball, too big/wide of a swing, etc.). Your other videos showed us how to fix that. The 2 reading drills sound interesting but the volley drill is better. The tip about the tape on the sweet spot is awesome. I will try all of them. My problem of put-away volley at the net is mostly because of "choke". the pressure of missing/shanking the volley made me not anticipating and it dipped to my feet causing an error or a floater. I know with my position at the net, the only shot that could hurt me is a heavy topspin. I just need to "paddle like a duck", keep good posture, and look at contact. Thanks so much. You are great.

Since physiologists claim AFAIK that we can no longer maintain focus on a rapidly approaching object closer than about 4 feet from our eyes I believe your idea of watching contact is really about keeping the head steady throughout the forward swing. Looking up too soon involves raising the head and this, in turn, can result in raising the shoulders and altering the intended swing path. Federer is famous for keeping his head aimed at the contact point even after the ball is struck but this does not IMHO involve his actually seeing the ball. He is just keeping his head perfectly steady. This picture of a forehand volley clearly shows that the player's head is pointed to where he last sees the ball but he nevertheless has kept his head steady by not raising it in order to see where the volley will go: www.quora.com/Is-it-better-to-volley-in-tennis-using-2-hands-or-using-a-one-hander-when-volleying-using-your-less-dominant-hand. So, I think your advice about watching the contact point is valuable because it better helps one keep the head steady throughout the stroke than simply saying "keep the head steady."

Not watching the ball is just one symptom of choking. In my book, the mental pressure of the match can reach a point where the player's technique will break down is how I define choking. For you, staying in the moment translates to me to focus on your technique and not the immediate pressure.

I have a tendency to not watch the ball when I'm scrambling on defense. And I notice I get more mishits when the court conditions are partly shady on a bright day. This sudden shift in ball visibility from very bright to very dark makes watching the ball challenging. But I do get little or no mishits when I play on the baseline and I constantly have to hit the ball on the rise. It forces me to concentrate on seeing the ball and not be lazy.

I try so hard to fix my gaze on the contact point, that I ... wait for it ... TAKE MY EYE OFF THE BALL AND SHANK IT!!! Yes, you read that correctly. I move my focus FROM the ball TO the contact point TOO EARLY and as a result SHANK the SHEEYIT out of THE BALL!!! ... my frustration is immeasurable... The worst part is ... wait for it again ... I cannot, repeat CANNOT, stop myself from doing this. How weird is that? Either I move my focus off the ball just before contact and just sort of stare out into space, or I _saccade_ on over to the aforementioned point of contact. The result of either is the same: a sickening CLUNK off the frame (hey, I paid for it I might as well use it, right?), along with a concomitant shockwave sent up the bones of my arm and straight to where my brain should be. What (the ffff-fudge) is wrong with me? Don't answer that. No wait, DO answer that. Please! What can I do to myself, short of electroconvulsive shock therapy, to break this immensely frustrating habit? On second thought, DON'T rule out electroconvulsive shock therapy. How much does that cost, will insurance cover it? I don't mind if I lose the ability to speak and/or remember to do up my fly, it will be worth it. I'll just buy tennis shorts that don't have a zipper. And buy a notepad to communicate with others. No wait, I'll buy tennis shorts that have a notepad where the zipper SHOULD BE. Genius. P.S. ... my frustration is immeasurable...

@FundamentalTennis
@FundamentalTennis 5 лет назад
Joe Stacey Hi Joe. I feel like I need more information to accurately answer but assuming your doing well between the ears and your not too excited etc. A couple suggestions... as I said in the video, try to point your nose to the contact when you make contact. This is simply a visual to watch the contact with your central vision. Also try to figure out where you keep framing the ball. Is it the left edge of the frame or right or top or bottom? Many times there is a pattern and once you find the pattern try to hit the frame on the opposite side of the racquet head as this often brings the ball into the sweet spot. A drill you can try to really FOCUS on the ball is to simply say “hit” the moment the ball is on your strings. If your focused and watching contact you will say “hit” during contact but if your not watching the ball well then you will probably notice your saying “hit” too late or too early. Lastly, the awareness of if you have hit the ball in the center or not I feel is key. Pay attention to how each hit FEELS. When player hit the frame they typically did not watch the contact. This is especially true on the volley. Let me know if you have any further questions. Hope this helps 👍

The only time you can see the ball contacting the strings is on the serve, when it's at the apex of the toss, hanging in the air like a piece of ripe fruit. If you can see that happen, the shot is guaranteed to land in the box.
