As skateboarders, it turns out we've chosen a path of MOST resistance when it comes to feeling like we're making any kind of forward progress on a consistent basis. Trying to learn something new on a skateboard can feel like an impossible task at first, but the more we skate, the more we learn to cope with (and welcome) the adversity and challenges that skateboarding gives us.
In today's video, I show you my process of learning the pressure flip. I learned a lot (more than just a new skate trick) and I hope you do as well!
If you're interested in what gear I use to skate and film my videos, here are some links to the equipment I use:

I don't know how to skateboard (yet! the interest is definitely there), but I do have experience working at developing a skill and moving through the physical and emotional pain of failure after failure (I used to do aerial silks, and silk burn is truly awful). I went into learning not worrying about how much better at it my peers are, but used them as inspiration, like "Ooh, I want to do that!" Once you learn to only compare yourself to yourself, finally getting a movement or trick right is the best feeling in the world. I had zero grip strength when I started, and my hands ached for months until one day I realized I wasn't coming home having to soak my hands in epsom salt. That's the approach I hope to take once all the snow is gone and I can get on a board. Thanks for the video!

As someone who has had hundreds of interests and pursuits over the years, I realised what I really enjoy is the learning part of an interest (more than the doing part). So with that in mind, skateboarding is pretty much my ideal pastime as it is an endless string of learning one thing after another. It'll keep me entertained far longer than previous interests.

I've landed maybe 10/1500 kickflip attempts. I decided to quit skating last week because I was so dejected about not improving as quickly as I wanted. This video made me rethink quitting and get out there to try again. Thanks man!

Thanks for showing the persistence. I'm sure we all feel like our practice gets us nowhere sometimes. My kickflips feel like this currently. But I know if I keep working on it, I'll get it some day. Thanks for helping me feel better about my frustration.

Same here. Although I really should focus on using 1 deck size setup and 1 type of skate shoe I think. Last weekend I got super close again skating Nike SB Blazer Mids. I think I would have gotten it if I rode my 8" setup instead of 8.5"...

Try using 2 chairs for hand rails on carpet. It will allow you to stay in the air as long as you like and give you more stabilization. Then once you have the flick and catch down consistently you can take the chairs away.

As frustrating as it can be, i do love how skateboarding (for many if not most people) is super hard to get good at. And u can even get good at the basics relatively quickly and then suddenly hit the glass ceiling and be stuck at a certain skill level for a long ass time. And then perseverance will ultimately lead to breaking through that glass ceiling. I assume there's people who are just naturally good at skateboarding and maybe didn't have to work that hard to get good (i heard Antwuan Dixon was one of those people), but i've personally never met a person like that. I've always seen it as normal to have sessions of just pulling ur hair out trying to land ur trick, unless ur always satisfied just doing ur go-to tricks and never learning anything new. U learn patience too. I hardly ever throw temper tantrums anymore when i can't get a trick after trying for a long time. Then again I never was really a board breaker even when i was younger. And the feeling of finally getting the clip after trying for so long is one of the best feelings in the world and it's a feeling that money can't buy.
@rayvindawkins5304
@rayvindawkins5304 Год назад
I agree with that 100% I've been skating for almost 6 years. I've had my fair share of frustration, anger and injuries. (Not any really serious injuries though) So many times I wanted to quit and never skate again, but I did anyway. Because of that I've had so many good experiences as well that I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
@saxenas
@saxenas Год назад
@@rayvindawkins5304 yeah it definitely teaches patience and perseverance. Builds character too cuz a spoiled brat can't whine or buy his way to becoming good at skating, he has to put in the work and time.
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 2 года назад
Yeah the hard part is figuring out what really makes the trick work and go from there. The first few attempts probably didn't have enough scoop to it and too much pop, _but_ you can pop pressure flips quite high also if you preload your board. So things often look deceiving, like something else is going on. We see this too with people explaining how to tre flip or even how to kickflip. I know my varial kickflips feel like I am flicking very much off the side of the board, but slow motion footage shows the ones I land go more towards the nose. Stuff like that can be crazy in skateboarding. How a trick feels and how a trick is done can often be very very different.
@NeverStopImprovingSB
@NeverStopImprovingSB 2 года назад
Veeerry good comment, and I agree, one of the things that expedited the process for me was watching my attempts in slow mo side by side with someone who could do it properly in slow motion and it subconsciously made its way into my brain and down to my popping foot. Such an unconventional movement!

I started skateboarding again last year. I was about 10 when I just started but never really got into it. Now, after learning some basic stuff, I'm always excited to go out and keep learning. It was so rewarding landing my first boneless the other year. The biggest issue for me now is that I'm not as good as coming back from a hard spill which really hurts the following days. Right now, I'm staying off my board because I feel my jumper's knee acting up. Really enjoying the hobby, but I'm terrified that if I don't listen to my body I'll not be able to skate again. Love this video, thanks for the inspiration to get back at it 💪

hi! im in a similar boat as you. got my first board at ten, but since i was so young i didnt have much independence to go anywhere on my own to skate. so i never really got into it. i got a new board a while ago while i was in france and now all i can think about is skateboarding. its affected my style, my thought process and what i do in my free time. its a part of me now

Having this great perseverance is not for everyone. The rhythms of daily life, family, work etc. reduce the time I can dedicate to skateboarding, and when I take an hour to go to the skatepark I am always undecided: it will be better to dedicate my time having fun in the things I already know how to do ( mini ramp, small ollies, rock to fakie) or repeat a new trick that may not come and walk away frustrated, with the feeling of having wasted that little time?

Hi guys, i want some advice. I just purchased a new skateboard and it should be coming tomorrow. I discovered my recommended board size way too late however. I shouldve bought a size 8 but i ordered a 7.5(one of my friends said it was fine) the same friend said later on that its gonna be horrible skating a 7.5. Hes smaller than me (shoe size eu40) so im (im eu42.5) scared itll be even worse for me. Its nearly impossible to return it so im not sure what to do. Is it recommended to get used to this board and then go up a size later on?
@bs2__1
@bs2__1 2 года назад
I ride an 8 (also size 8 UK shoe size), I have not tried a 7.5 before but recently I tried out a 7.75 deck which my brother bought last week as he also got into skating, he's taller than me and isnt having any trouble with the smaller deck. As someone who started with an 8 I think the 7.75 is just right, from my experience, while the smaller board might be a little bit more difficult to ride it is definitely more responsive to tricks because it's less wide and I think that's definitely worth it. Honestly I would recommend it and then move up with your next deck
