UPDATE 21.09.23: Hey everyone! If you're in this comment section, you're absolutely top shelf, and I adore you. Even though this first doco didn't really succeed financially, it was incredible artistically fulfilling, so I've shot some footage for what I think will become the second instalment in the series. I'll hopefully get it out in the coming months, but I'm not sure, it's hard to find the time to make it work, could be as late as next January/February, but we'll wait and see. Thank you to everyone who has watched this one, really means more than you know. Original Comment: Every time I upload a new video with WETA I feel the same. Watching this edit back just knocks me over, it doesn't feel real, totally surreal. To be able to spend time with incredible people I respect so much as artists and as human beings, who have been the ultimate inspiration since I was a wee lad, is so incredibly humbling. A huge thank you to Richard Taylor & Tania Rodger, Daniel Falconer, Luke Hawker, Darin Gordine, Chris Menges, Leonard Ellis, Louise and of course the almighty, incredible, super fantastic Jules who helped make this possible. You had made a little boy with wide eyes and big dreams very, very happy. Let me know guys, would you like to see this format continue?

Oh please, please turn this into a docuseries. I'm 60 now but fell in love with LOLR as a young teenager and can't get enough of the behind the scenes interviews and details of how this epic adventure was brought to the screen. The often unsung heroes who created this vision are fascinating and the stories they have to tell are as entertaining as the films themselves. Thank you for doing this, I really appreciate it.

I enjoyed every second of that! To me it's a no brainer, and I have no clue how this isn't the most popular content on the channel! I mean, if you love Lord Of The Rings then this is pure Gold!! I think the format is great, for my tastes at least. For future stuff maybe it would be cool to see you getting to take part in some of the processes and techniques? Weathering etc... Or if they let you in to where they stored all the remaining Bigatures... I dunno, I'd love to see it all!

Watching this video transports me back to 2001 watching the extended edition dvd extras. It’s fascinating to see that the passion in those videos are still alive in all the weta crew who were involved. I love the fact that you are an expert interviewing them. I would imagine that more often they are interviewed by people who are less invested in the world they have created and so I love the moment when you call out the 72 bigatures and Richard’s like ‘you know your stuff’

The amount of passion, creativity and sheer art that went into these films was, as you said, lightning in a bottle. I don't know if cinema will ever see something like that which Lord of the Rings captured. So awesome that you got to sit down and talk to these guys. They're the reason I pursued film/production design when I went to uni. As for why this worked for me: I am tired of shorts, and blips, and one minute blurbs. I miss long format, and when it's about my favorite films, why wouldn't I take the time to sit down and hear and watch the passionate folks behind it's creation? But I get it. This is the world we live in, for better or worse.

Exact same here mate, and I think it's a total certainty it will never happen again. The financial landscape literally cannot facilitate it. Many of the companies with the money to spend are public entities with fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders. So they legally cant do something mental like Bob Shaye throwing the entire fate of New Line Cinema on one project.

I think everything just came together perfectly for these films, every actor/actress was perfect for their parts, the sheer epicness of the filming, good vs evil, depth of character storylines combined with stunning battles, and possibly the greatest most spine tingling moment in cinema history, the charge of the Rohirrim across the Pelennor. What's not to love about these films :)

The movies themselves were masterpieces but honestly, the BtS stuff is what really got me hooked, just seeing the level of work and detail that went into the films production and the bonding between cast and crew really made me appreciate these already great films in a whole new way. The amount of detail that went into the design process from creatures, culture, weapons and sets was amazing. The acting was also top notch. The story writing itself was good. New Zealand as a whole was an excellent backdrop. The extended version could have added more elements from the book like the Barrow Wights. Some scenes would have been better suited in places like Australia, Canada and the US. For example the Rohirrim Charge was mostly digitalized as they only had 150 or so extras with horses. Re-enactment societies (especially in the US) would have given Jackson 1000s of actual horsemen to use and the Great Plains with the Rockies as a back drop (for the White Mountains) would have been stunning. Wished they had made a full scale model of the Corsair ship that could actually float.

Along with the guys at ILM during the Star Wars (New Hope) era, the team at WETA set a new standard in film, for professionals and audiences. The world needs more videos like this. I honestly feel like we are in a creative crisis in terms of popular movie and film making. Lotr is such a big production and yet feels like an indi movie in a way. The passion, love and creative genius that went into those films, of cause on the basis of these literary master pieces, is unmatched. I really miss movies like lotr. I miss people taking their time to create something that lasts, something that is meaningful. Of cause there are still things like it out there, but they tend to not shine a bright through all the fast pace content and consumption. I was really happy to see this video and remembering myself of the greatness that lotr is and will always be. And the same goes for the warhammer content you do. I have visited that beautiful country and cannot wait to go back. truely envious that you have moved there. please tell me that you will continue these documentary style videos and tell me the next ones some of the stunning locations from the films. people involved in this hobby should love this content that you releasing as it is the history behind why the films are just so amazing and create the basis for our beloved game. keep it up and see you in the live stream soon.

What makes The Lord of the Rings the literary masterpiece it is, is the depth of its world building, that make the story and characters live and breath through the pages. A reader feels the sheer weight of the architecture holding the narration, and throught it the immense cultural and intellectual baggage of Tolkien. Through its author, the book draws from centuries of western history, philosophy, literature and art. And the trilogy by Peter Jackson, through the effort and time of so many talented and passionate people, succeeded in conveying the same artistic and intellectual treasure. I dubt something will ever get close to it for a long time, if ever, not last because the West in general actually came to despise every expression of the very history, culture and world view that generated this timeless story. In a sense, I think the P.J. trilogy even came to be the swan song of a whole collective identity. (I am not writing this to polemize or trigger a cultural war, far from that: everything changes, nothing is eternal, and this is true for civilizations and cultural identities as well. It is often sad and traumatic for individuals and societis living these periods of passage, but it's inevitable.)

Great video Lachie! Really enjoyed the interviews. The 52 minutes flew by. The props, performances, sets, costumes, music, locations. There really isnt anything quite like the LOTR trilogy. Watched the whole way through as i'm interested in pursuing work in the film or art space, really enjoying all of the videos youre making in general but the locations videos and other more unique ideas in particular have been great!

I sat down with a morning coffee thinking I'd watch for 15" and then get on with my day . . . and find myself still sitting here almost an hour later with my mouth agape. Fantastic documentary and you really helped them portray all their love and enthusiasm for what they do and for that special project. It shone through.

You want to know why... in the mid to late 90s as an aspiring fantasy artist I went through the process of trying to emigrate from the UK to New Zealand with the hopes of being at Weta and working on the film I had so long wanted to see made (Yes Ralph Bakshi you were a part of that desire!). I let a life that lasted far less time than the duration of the trilogy dissuade me from going. Now over twenty years later your journey and a love of all things ttrpg with a growing RU-vid channel inspired by you, I want to see the fruits of somebody who followed their dream and achieved it as a reality!... Love you and all you do Lachlan and being in my 50s now doesn't stop me from still chasing that dream!

I think the reason LotR was so perfect was because the best actors and director came together at just the right time - just when CGI had advanced enough to create a believable world, and before entertainment became so political. As much as I would love another trilogy, I really don't think anything will ever come close. I'm hoping and praying for the next films not to turn out like Rings of Power lol

Lachie, I love this. I'm nearly 47, I read the books in late 80's. Got heavily into 40k in the early 90's, then lost interest. Fast forward to 2001 and was blown away by Peter Jackson's movies, got the extended Dvd's which I still cherish because of the artwork. Now heavily into GW MESBG got thousands of figures which I love painting. All inspired by Richard Taylor and WETA. Fantastic video, thanks

I watch your videos to get ideas for my own large scale project(Resident Evil themed). Its helpful to see your process, and where you have come from to where you are now. I do enjoy lord of the rings of course though. I'm looking forward to seeing your setup/studio. I was hoping for as glimpse of it in this video, but I watched the whole thing because its fun to see you get to meet the people behind your passion. I'm secretly hoping for the same with my project in the future. I'm not sure how well the video will do now or more in the future in terms of views but that shouldn't stop you. A video is a good excuse to go visit these people as much as possible haha. Hope the move has gone well. Looking forward to more content.

I absolutely love the movies, I've been through all of the behind the scene material on the dvd's and blureray's. And I can't seem to get enough of it. Please keep on doing this. I think what makes the films so outstanding is the craftmanship behind it all the screenwriting, props, small and big, acting and absolute love for Tolkiens visions. Doing everything with passion and not the total disregard that the people behind the Amazon series, I refuse to say the name of, is doing.
