We really have to commend Sony for continuing to support our beloved PS3, 17 years after it's release date. The store is still open & there was even a new 2023 system update. What a beast of a machine it is. Mine has functioned without fault all this time I've got to say I'm absolutely f**kin impressed.

@@herbyverstink I am not a gamer so I didn't really use my PS3 a lot either. What has changed that is I bought a Logitech steering wheel set used, and then a couple of Gran Turismo games on ebay. I have the wheel setup on a stand in my theater so I can play on a 106" screen (largest I could go for this particular space). I liked Gran Turismo when I was younger, going back to the PS2, but it got boring pretty fast. Playing with the wheel though, it's incredibly fun. I am in my late 40s now, a car guy that respects the laws of the road, so its a blast to go downstairs and race around a track. I cannot remember the last time I played any other game.

yes, stand alone BD players were double the price. And PS3 was the benchmark BD player for over 6 years after its release. I used my 60GB OG fatty from 2007 until 2018 for all mediaplay: cd, dvd, BD +streaming. Gaming wasn't that good, and I did jump into xbox wagon (had to have 2 consoles because RROD, but those clan games couldn't wait)

The capacitors were never the issue. There is a guy who did very deep research on the yellow light of death. Turns out, the GPU was not designed correctly on the first couple of models. The constant heating and cooling messed up internal solder points within the GPU chip itself. There are now fixes for it if you can get a specific type of PS3 slim, remove the GPU, and then replace it on your FAT PS3. Itll take some skill, or some money to pay someone skilled, but there is a way to save the original PS3's. Just figured I should point that out. The video is called A PS3 Story: The Yellow Light Of Death by RIP Felix
@Mathias4595

Not fully true, Felix covered it in a second video - The Tokins can still go bad, and it's the most likely cause of the YLOD if you don't have a 90nm RSX (So CECHJ, K, L, P and 20xx slims)

The PS3 in my opinion was one of the 1st modern consoles. Still holding up well. Features younger games may take as common originated on the PS3 and yes later XBOX 360. I wouldn't call the PS3 retro just yet, as the newer consoles haven't really innovated the way the PS3 did over a decade ago. Yea, resolution and graphics have gotten better and you can play some games in VR if you care about that but nothing like being to play a game in HD for the 1st time. Wireless controllers right out the box. Speaking of controllers, the original PS3 controller was quite innovative as well with motion controls built in (I know few games used it, but still.) You could run apps from it, play blue rays, surf the web, and so much. Ahead of its time when it released.

The first PS3 was great. It was backward compatible. It allowed you to upgrade the HD very easily. It played Blurays. It allowed the Other OS feature. Being a multiple PS3 console owner it’s important to note that it’s widely known the first Xbox 360 variant had a 50% + “red ring of death” failure rate it overshadowed the PS3’s own YLOD, disc drive & laser reliability issues. PS3’s aren’t aging well & you’re seeing fewer functional systems. Sure, the super slim is known to be the most reliable PS3 console but let’s not forget about the “bios bomb” battery issue that will make PS3 consoles useless unless Sony updates so PSN check in isn’t required before shutting it down. IMO it’s going to be incredibly difficult to enjoy all those fantastic PS3 games in 5-10 years unless Sony allows backwards compatibly on PS5. Just my opinion being a PS3 owner

To the point where many of its components made the switch from lab to production exclusively for this console. Sadly, because of its incredibly ambitious hardware, developers couldn't get their heads around them so what they did was build a virtual machine that effectively crippled the platform so it could fall back in line and be much more familiar. Thought this would be a much more technical video but it was fun, to be honest... I didn't know about these games lol only a bit about the tech specs

I cannot recommend that anyone with a PS3 should buy Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas for this console, ESPECIALLY if they are running the game of the year/ultimate editions respectively. These two games barely work on the console, and you would be much better off trying them on PC or 360, or just moving onto another game entirely.

I just picked up a PS3 slim. Having missed out on that whole generation (minus the Wii), it really feels like the nexus between classic and modern hardware. You can wing it into your old CRT with composite cables or modern television with HDMI and it works just fine natively. The interface is ridiculously smooth and modern for something that came out in 2006. The slim model doesn't have full compatibility, but it also just works, and fits seamlessly with modern consoles on a shelf. In a way I'm upset that I missed out on it new, but in the other hand it's great to be able to pick everything up for so cheap. The going rate for any game seems to be about $5, and the games don't feel aged. I have about 30 games and a complete console and, all told, I'm still less than $200 in. It feels like such a steal.

This console Sony created IS their champion trophy, only for them to mess up with price override to put fans off, however this still revolutionise alot of gaming wonders we're seeing on the two now gens. The 60g console is awesome and adventurous, yet a letdown is the overheating which leads to TYLOD and TRLOD, to even modernise the circuit of handling overheating, things would still make this console the greatest....and agree with Nathan...it STILL is.👍🏿😁

Shoutout the PowerPC Generation! PlayStation 3 holds the future: metaverse is PlayStation Home, cell CPU is still powerful to this day, and looking back, it was Sony’s last stand of having little to non-pc gaming architecture, as it has now with x86-64, when Microsoft Xbox made Sony wave the console wars white flag to… Microsoft’s daddy: x86-64 based PC Gaming. Cherish the PlayStation 3, especially the original, because now Sony solely relies on Microsoft’s style-of gaming & streaming format. PowerPC in uniqueness is equivalent to Apple’s M1 in uniqueness, while it has its disadvantages in game development, PowerPC provided variety. Now we live in two worlds (three if you count Apple’s ARM apu): x86-64 computing & Qualcomm-mobile style microchips. But yeah, don’t let the PlayStation 3 die world, Sony cut off their own arms and legs to build one.

The plastics on the SIXAXIS actually age better, in my experience. It only feels cheap because it’s so light due to a lack of rumble motors. There’s so much that goes into running and maintaining a PS3 with full backwards compatibility, and many owners disagree about what is and isn’t necessary, but even after the preventative maintenance I’ve done to my 20GB, I only use it for PlayStation 2 software. I use a 500GB Super Slim for PlayStation 3 software, but I use an adapter to use it with a DualShock 4.

You don’t need an adapter for a DualShock 4 You can just use a USB cable
@chadjustice8560
@chadjustice8560 2 года назад
You can set the dual shock 4 up wireless on your PS3 also. The only thing I wish is whichever way you do it the home button would work lol

@@chadjustice8560 that’s why I use the adapter. I didn’t want to deal with the reduced feature set from the officially-supported connection.

I've always liked the super slims looks over the Slim. Lighter and easier to wall mount than any other PS3 too.

@@Gr00t common thing. Had my PS4 on the wall previously with a mount I made. Need to make a mount for my E01 Phatty, and the PS5 on the wall right now. They're both hefty girls, make sure you're on the studs.

wasn't the og ps3 version rushed cause microsoft started the next gen early, the ps2 and it's game were still selling high so they were totally caught off guard by the xbox 360 . EDIT: also og is worst to own cause of it's heating issues

But but, I can emulate on pc, even though some games aren't well optimized for emulation yet. I do have the slim one just got the sake of it, but I do own most of the PS3 exclusives

I miss the early days of the PS3, so many new concepts to take in and games to experience and when PS Home dropped it was like META before the meta, good times. 👍🏿👍🏿

I recommend buying the slim PS3 and upgrade it with an SSD! I have the original 60GB and the Blu-ray disc reader/writer drive is starting to give up, replacing the drive is tedious and expensive! Although if your pockets are deep the original 60GB is worth it for the PS2 hardware emulation, Super Audio CD playback and the extra ports and connections. Another problem is the Wi-Fi card can sometimes give up but this can be fixed with restoring default settings! I love this console because my brother loved sharing games and controllers with me and it still remains extremely nostalgic and sentimental to me!❤️

PS1 and PS2 emulation on windows are so good there's no real need for a PS3 for that. I use Mednafe Multi System Emu for PS1 and PCSX2 for PS2.

I remember buying the 80GB PlayStation 3 in 2007 which had PS2 software emulation. I was still in college back then, and I made the smart decision of saving some money for it ever since the price was revealed at E3 2006. I remember playing Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 on it with my roommate. Those were the good times.

I bet you and your roomate were the laughing stock of your college for wasting upwards of $600 on a terrible console and a bunch of mediocre games. The only good games you mentioned on that list are Modern Warfare and GTA IV, both of which looked and runned better on Xbox 360.

@@NVintage I'm just saying the truth, Xbox 360 was a way better console. Not only was it cheaper than the PS3, but it also had a better controller, a better online service and better games. By 2007, the Xbox 360 had games like Gears of War, Oblivion, BioShock, Crackdown, Forza Motorsport 2, Halo 3, Mass Effect and a bunch more. And Xbox 360 also had the better version of multiplatform games. It was just a better console all around.
