Why You Need An Electric Gravel Bike | How to ride more with Chris Opie |

Earlier this year, Chris Opie told Cycling Weekly how he'd made the transition from being a professional racer to someone who simply loves riding bikes for fun. Since then he's been spending even more time on his bike and exploring his home county of Cornwall in the UK. Perhaps surprisingly for someone who's used to riding big distances, Chris has been putting a lot of miles in on his Lapierre E-Crosshill electric gravel bike and in this video he explains why adding power to your pedalling can open up new horizons.

Chris, eBikes can and will be a great asset to many people. I don't ride an eBike, but I do have depression. Cycling has really helped me. Yes, I have good days and bad days. After I ride, I feel good. E-Bikes are not cheating !!! I feel they can really help someone with disabilities. Thank You Sir

Appreciate this so much. Over and over I hear people say that ebikes are great for old people and invalids. Here is a young, strong rider, who simply enjoys riding all day without the grind and pain of climbing. I'm 73 and ride an acoustic bike most of the time, but when I want to tackle more hills or not fight a strong headwind I use my ebike. To call ebikes cheating is just silly, they are simply another way of enjoying cycling and being outdoors.

Agreed, the more barriers we can break down between the couch and the bike, the better. E bikes are having a hugely positive influence and having people who represent the highest echelons of cycling paint a positive picture can only help. Its not Joe average who stigmatises E bikes, its us!

Great video. I sometimes ride my wife's e-bike and think it really is brilliant. You're so right though, many cyclists think of it as cheating and look down on the bikes and riders. They should watch this video then try one for themselves, but I think they're too stuck in their predudices.

Roadies are the last to catch on how much fun ebikes are.

For me they need to be just that bit quicker i would buy one if the speed limit was 18 mph . And be over the moon with twenty. I’m Using a Vado sl that belongs to a friend and I struggle to hold above the 15.5 and it hops in and out of assistance sp still on the fence.I think I need to try some more . I’d like a gravel bike to use for commuting and fitness . I think Europes 15.5 cap is hindering progress. I’d love to be able to commute at 18 mph with my heart rate at 140 instead of 170-180 . Must admit since riding the Vado I feel a lot better . But I get very frustrated with the limiter. And get left feeling if I was on my allez or tarmac I could be Cruzing faster. But I’m too out of shape and heavy to get them up hill .

Roadies have taken so long to wake up to the fun of ebikes. If your not racing you're not cheating,

Getting very popular E bikes. The amount of times I have been caught by overweight riders doing 45kph and me wondering WTF..... Then seeing its a E bike. Great motor pacing though lol

Seeing Chris, an ex-pro, religiously and casually going out with an e-bike makes me verrry curious in wanting to try one. The big issue: e-bikes are so much more expensive than their all-manual counterparts which makes it less accessible for me.

Nah - weight is not an issue - give me 600wh - tiny battery tiny range!

E-bikes rob me of the satisfaction I get from knowing I did it all under my own power. Going a bit further or a bit faster doesn't make up for that.

sounds like a personal problem. a runner could say the same about using a normal bicycle. when you’re running you are REALLY doing it under your own power. even a normal bicycle gives you a LOT of mechanical advantage. you should run instead and stay true to your beliefs.

To each their own. I ride often with a guy that needs an ebike to keep riding due to an "life changing" injury. It lets him keep with his favorite hobby. Ebikes are amazing things for many people. I also prefer my manual bike. But I am super grateful for ebikes.
