At day 23 or later you can still try a float test for chicken eggs. Use warm water, watch for wiggling and partly submerged eggs before giving up or cracking them. Some may be slow due to low temps.

Yes bad humidity, my fault not high enough at the last 3 days. I took 2 chicks out while others were trying to hatch. The others were stuck.

I had my first hatch 70% died at hatch only a couple piped the rest never did humidity problems i think, and then my second hatch 80% died within the first week to a week and a half most had blood rings or a small growth or blob then died not sure if my incubator screwed up or what. It sucks lol

What is the best temperature and humidity for hatching chicks and turkey for first 18 days and last 3 days ?
@ladyflibblesworth7282
@ladyflibblesworth7282 4 года назад
been hatching successfully for 2-3 years. Spent over £200 (money I made selling chicks) on a new big incubator and rare but similar breed eggs from various sellers.....3 healthy chicks and 1 wet weak one and one died... out of 48 eggs. My own mixed breed fresh eggs had exactly the same results on the shelf above. So out of 96 eggs I have 6 healthy chicks and 2 very weak ones that survived and two that died after being pulled from egg. The 4 assisted hatches were helped on day 3 and were wet inside the egg but glued to the shell near the pip hole, no bleeding but some soreness where the shell was stuck, didn't walk for days but egg yolk feeds put them right soon enough, though scrawny compared to big beefy siblings. The eggtopsy showed various stages of development but many were close or were fully developed yet jellied in appearance and most had fully formed air sacks, the hatch was slow and the moving eggs grew still over time. There was little to no water in the incubator just a drop for lock down, yet I struggled to get the humidity below 50%-70% throughout incubation, automatic egg turner, set at 37.5'c. Ambient humidity indoors has been high between 30% - 50% at 25'c but there have been a few brief cold snaps near the start of incubation. Healthy chicks all hatched in 1 small area. I wonder if I should better insulate the incubator, try to increase ventilation or change the location, or perhaps all 3. My smaller incubators are failing for the first time also and they had normal water levels as they don't have humility readers. The weather has been very different over the past few years so I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix it, but it seems likely to me that the problem is changing conditions mixed with high humility or perhaps a faulty humidity or temp reader or poor ventilation. This problem doesn't seem easy to fix but I'm no expert, would appreciate anyone with more experience to weigh in with any honest opinions or advice, not afraid of being at fault, would rather fix the issue directly. So be brutal because this last hatch really broke my usual casual cheerful attitude :) only way to fix it is to get it right next time.
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 4 года назад
The early cold snap could have effected it but I've found the biggest killer is INCONSISTENT temperature. If the temp is a little low or a little high then it doesn't effect much but if it's jumping constantly from a couple degrees high Tina couple degrees low, then you have problems. I just got a 10 percent hatch rate on my last hatch due to this, worst I've ever gotten. And I'd rather have the humidity too high than too low throughout. Inaccurate readings sound like they might be playing a part. I've found the Temp Stick to be the most accurate, it's expensive but has other cool features.

@@UrbanAviary shame to hear about your low hatch but at least I no longer feel quite as incompetent :) thanks for the tips, they sound like a plan to me, think I will move the incubator upstairs, temps fluctuate wildly downstairs with the dog, toddler using the backdoor constantly. temp is very consistent in the guest room, with this virus we wont be having quests any time soon, then I will buy that thing u mentioned. Thanks for the help, really helped me figure out a plan

@@destinedturkeys6721 lol :) nope. 1 works the orange auto 16 egg with flashing bulb works at about 75%-95% but the big cheap yellow 98 egg fan incubator got me 1 single chick all on its own the day before yesterday. About ready to set it on fire. getting better results in a new room overall but that big cheap one (not that cheap) was a waste of money.

What impact does elevation have on hatch rate? I'm at 6800' elevation. Do you think I can improve hatch rates by adding more air holes to the incubator to increase oxygen availability? Any other suggestions, assuming all other factors you spoke of seem to be acceptable?

It's hard to say, but I've found low humidity is the most common culprit if they have developed that far and died.

@lizxu322
@lizxu322 2 года назад
He just said don't have too high of a humidity or the chicks will drown. Depends on the area you live too, humid areas may need less incubator humidity than a super dry environment. It can't be too drying either or the chicks get stuck

Hello. If you had ONLY two choices of 99 degrees Fahrenheit OR 100 degrees Fahrenheit on your forced air incubator which would you choose for Mandarin duck eggs?
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 4 года назад
Not familiar with mandarins specifically, but I'd do 99. And honestly, that difference won't effect your hatch rate, just might make your eggs hatch a half day sooner or later.

The incubator I have only allows eggs to lay on their sides. How does air sac not appear on the side of the egg?
@squirreltown517
@squirreltown517 3 года назад
It should remain attached at the top of the egg. They can become detached during shipping in which case you can place the eggs upright in little egg holders made from a cardboard carton to give them a chance to reattach. But if they were handled roughly, then they should remain at the top.

You have to use less water, however you can manage that. Specifically reducing the surface area of the water.
@LatinDanceVideos
@LatinDanceVideos 2 года назад
That explanation of the problem of excess humidity was eggscellent. Too much humidity first 18 days = chicks drowning inside egg. Too little humidity in last 3 days = egg shell too hard & chick can’t pip out of shell.

Started with a dozen eggs the first hatch and ended up with two chicks. I thought it was either the rooster was old or the incubator was junk. the first thing you need to do is break open the eggs that don't hatch and find out if they had started to develop or if they were even fertile. That will give you a good starting point to figure out the problem

A good temp of 99.5 degrees farenheit. And 50 to 55 % humidity all the way up until they have about 3 days to hatch, and then u should up the humidity to 75%. That should do it. Also remember to turn eggs at least 4 times a day. And don't turn them during the 3 day hatch period.
