Maybe, you might level using the inbuilt leveling device, then change the level to a more pleasing angle in post, if need be? Or do both... I mean to say; it's only ram not negatives.

🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Hey Ho from the other side of the pond, Henry! BTW... I have your calendar up on our wall now... FABULOUS!! (It's February and I'm playing Video-Catch-Up again! 1/ I'm ENVIOUS of your fog and mist. (I say that every time!) You said "other-worldly". Well, from my ENVIOUS perspective it IS other-worldly! Now, you've been over here and you've spent time in Canada and so I KNOW that there are great landscapes here, BUT I don't get to travel much and I am SOOO looking forward to visiting The Lake District (for instance) some day. 2/ I'm always frustrating myself with level horizons. PARTICULARLY when it comes to views over the lake as the shoreline swinging around closer on one side always confuses the eye. And of course, if you try to fake the eye out and make the horizon LOOK level... the STILL surface of the water looks... odd. Oh, yes... the water is going to empty off on one side! LOL 3/ I hear ya, re wide-angles and foreground. And it also encourages one to squat down and shoot low when there isn't any other foreground elements. UNUSUAL POINTS OF VIEW are one of the things that MAKES for unique photos. 4/Focus-stacking... definitely a good reminder, Henry! Despite years of experience, I've never gotten into the HABIT and I really should. Thanks for the reminder! 5/ B-ROLL... you're getting REALLY good with your editing bro! Very nice imagery in their own rite! Excellent! 6/ One of the great things about a misty/foggy day is that it adds moisture to all of the surfaces and that moisture helps to saturate the colours. Terrific images and your 200mm last image is wonderful with all of the layers!!! Well... on to the next video!!

Thanks for another wonderful, informative, and interesting clip - as always very worthwhile. I find that many of your images have a lovely, moody serenity (if that's not a contradiction of terms), and also warmth. I got a wide-angle lens a short while ago and now that I'm allowed out and about (Covid lockdowns and such), getting a chance to use it, your advice is quite opportune. Hope you had a great Christmas, and all the best for the New Year.

Hi Henry, here's a challenge for you. Can you work out, 1. How many times in 2021 did you go out doing landscape photography? 2. How many images did you take in that year ? 3. And how many of those images do you class as worthy to sell or go in your portfolio ? I think it would be very interesting, and maybe a video for you, to work it all out as I think people go out striving for ' The perfect shot ' far too often instead of focusing on what is important in a photograph. And that's the enjoyment of getting out like you do and being in the moment.

Fairly new to all this landscape photography. I am not sure I understand why we must straighten every horizon, especially when the real horizon in question, like this example, is obviously on a slant.
@HenryTurnerphoto
@HenryTurnerphoto 2 года назад
Definitely don't have to, just my preference! I just feel it looks really off when it's wonky
@MarlonSardini
@MarlonSardini 2 года назад
It isn't a must, but a non-straight horizon should be part of your creative vision and kinda make artistically sense. Usually, when viewing landscapes in person, they are seen with a straight horizon, that's why a tilted image tends to "feel unusual". It also adds dynamism to the scene, something not very usual when the subject is the landscape. One good example of a landscape shot with a non-straight horizon, imo, could be a close-up of a waterfall, shot from the top as the water rushes down.

Yes I really like the foreground interest with wide angle lenses and even at 24mm if you get down low enough,....it really adds depth and texture. I was noticing Henry that it seems your favourite aperature seems to be f11 is that because you noticed you lose some sharpness to defraction by going any higher?, I like to use f14 and then I don't have to focus stack but lately I am thinking maybe f13 because sometimes my iso could be a little lower.

The photo at 10:20 doesn't really work, for me. Part of the tree trunk is obscured, which needn't be the case. If you had taken little wander around the area for a few minutes, I'm certain you'd have seen a more pleasing scene.

Thanks for this video, you make a good point about the horizon. Though I use the electronic level, sometimes it doesn't feel right (as in your first picture). The real problem arises when you have two features competing for level eg horizon and sloping ground, sometimes I have to compromise based on feel. Thanks for all your videos of this last year, I have enjoyed them all. Happy New Year.

I fully agree with this. I remember the first time I purchased a wide angle (Sigma 12-24 back in the 1990's. It had more chromatic abberatons than a kaleidoscope,🤣) thinking I could capture all that wonderful detail from the foreground, mid and distance in one click. Only to find my main focal point had fizzled in obscurity. When we're marvelling at a beautiful vista, we forget we're seeing the scene at approx 50mm in "panorama mode" by moving our heads. Oh, the years of frustration before I realised this 🤣
@christophergrove4876
@christophergrove4876 2 года назад
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... One of the cool things about shooting in Black n White, Harvy, is that you can use the worst of lenses as far as chromatic aberration goes, and the photos don't care! In fact, when colour film first came out lens manufacturers had to scramble to figure out the science of colour photography and come out with new lenses with more lens elements and better glass, coatings etc. Colour messed up everything!!! LOL Cheers! :-)

I've always loved the way you refer to trees as 'he'! I think it's wonderful because it's almost like you're giving them a personality all of their own! Changing the subject, for my birthday next year, I'm coming into a little bit of money, not much, but just enough to either get myself bit of new gear, or to actually put towards going to a few different locations to take the photos in the first place (which is always good). But a wide angle lens might be something to consider.

Thanks for sharing ! I wish I had mountains or hills in The Netherlands but wide-angle is always possible of course. Foggy conditions can be awesome with photography as the fog works with the land to frame the shot (given the correct density of moisture). I do have trouble getting a wide lens to work. I suffer from that exact snapshotty problem. In a way I don't feel I have with 50 and above. But I also feel like there must be more than just adding foreground to every image to make it work. Just like not every image needs to follow the rule of thirds, as you show with slapping that gorgeous tree right in the middle.
@SMSBJM1981
@SMSBJM1981 2 года назад
I think it's not so much rule of thirds is that with wide angle it's often necessary to get real close on the subject which is something in the foreground.

Hi Henry, isn't it funny how a grand day out need only be minutes away from home ... more cracking images there too, and thanks for sharing. I've just recently received a wide angle lens thanks to Santa, so this episode is very timely subject matter for me. The most striking change I've noticed is the way depth in the image is exaggerated, so I can see why you'd want to fill the foreground to make the best from a wide angle lens selection. This has been yet another year of very helpful subject matter Henry, the idiot behind my camera's viewfinder learns so much from you. All the best for the new year to you and all those you call your own.
