@@genericallyentertaining the original (unpublished) prose version was quite good, and I do think he's said he wants to re-write it at some point, so I'm pretty hopeful for the future of white sand 😁
@@genericallyentertaining The graphic audio book is way more detailed and imo better than the graphic novel. They had access to the source material of the graphic novel and is much more detailed. Tons more about Khriss and none of it is in the coppermind yet.
I was shocked when I was reading white sand and realized “Duchess Khrissalla” was THE Khris. It feels weird to see a recurring cosmere character in a visual medium. I wonder how she’ll react if her home planet becomes a galactic threat? Will she finally take an active role in the main narrative?
Right?? It's another thing that rubs in just how early White Sand takes place, since whenever else Khriss appears, she's a jaded, hundreds-of-years-old Worldhopper I think Khriss really wants to know more about what's going on on Taldain, but what she writes in Arcanum Unbounded seems to imply it's difficult to impossible for her to get information out of the planet. I'd imagine there are still some things she knows about Autonomy that we haven't learned yet, though...
Having to choose between hilarious cosmere comedy and serious cosmere deep dives is a problem I am willing to accept. Love the channel and hope it grows! I'm not sure what would get you the most views but I will binge anything you post similar to this type of video.
A theory about Autonomy. I may be going out on a limb here, but here goes: In MB secret history, when Kelsier and Khriss meet, Kelsier asks if Khriss can help Kelsier stop Ruin, and Khriss replies something like "we don't have the resources to stop a shard right now". This implies that somewhere, someone has developed a way to counter a shark's power. What if the people of Taldain figured that way out, and Autonomy's goal is to stop the wider cosmere from figuring this out. This is just an idea, but if you are right in that the people of Taldain are aware/ruled by Autonomy, they might want to be able to stop her, if the need arises. Maybe I am spitballing, but that is just an idea I came up with while watching. By the way, great content. Very funny! Edit: yes, I am aware that I mistyped shard as shark, but it's funny so I'll keep it lol.
You have some very interesting and totally viable theories, so yeah, it's a food format! Just don't forget about the scetches, esp. the cosmere ones, because they bring a lot of people to your channel and you're just too good at them
I definitely won't stop the sketches! Planning to keep the serious/sketch ratio at something like 25:75, since sketches are a little easier to make anyway.
It definitely feels like Autonomy is going to be a major player in the space age of the Cosmere. It seems like she has already carved out a decent number of planets for herself at the point we are in the timeline. of the shards we know of, she has a presence on by far the most different planets. I believe there are also a couple of WoBs that imply she may have been allied with Odium at one point. On top of that there is a very popular theory that she is related to Mistborn Era 2’s Trell. Regardless of the tech level of Taldain, it seems like she is getting in early on interplanetary interference.
This video kicked ass, please make more along these lines. As a Cosmere superfan and avid theorist I enjoyed it. You also have a great voice for an audiovisual medium.
This is stellar stuff. Sharing with the few friends I have that understand me cosmere-wise. The music, the vibes, the way you showed the WOBs on-screen for us pause-and-readers, it was all really well done. Fantastic work!
I really enjoyed your lines of thinking! I've been keeping rough tabs on what the fandom's theories and ideas are since I read the Cosmere a few years ago, and this lines up with basically everything I've heard so far. Three things to bear in mind: Firstly, I ordered a copy of the White Sand Omnibus edition which was done in a kickstarter several months ago. This isn't available to be ordered anymore as far as I'm aware, but should hopefully help with some of those pacing issues you mentioned (and which I agree with). Secondly, I think it is bold to assume that noone at all has managed to visit Taldain since Bavadin restricted access, since we regularly see incredibly powerful and knowledgeable individuals and groups getting fooled by several people (Hoid obviously being the worst offender). this is just a nitpick and probably not hugely relevant, but hey ho. Finally, it has been confirmed that Autonomy has / had some kind of alliance / agreement / pact with Odium. I think this was in a WoB somewhere, but also possibly mentioned in the SA epigraphs maybe. Anyway, I am extremely excited to see how this will turn out after Odium's... change in management... shall we say in RoW. Anyway, great video!!
That's so interesting about the pact with Odium! I hadn't heard about that. I'd imagine however, that, given that Odium is Odium, it was only a tenuous agreement at best, and that...well, as you said, now that Odium is under new management, he might be able to find some loopholes in whatever pact they made, (like he's trying to do with Dalinar.)
@@genericallyentertaining That's similar to what I thought - obviously Odium is crafty and not trustworthy at the best of times, so I've been in suspense and waiting for the inevitable exploiting of loopholes as you say, with the new circumstances involved, and basically who will stab the other in the back first. It's an interesting idea that if they weaken each other then maybe the heroes / Cultivation / the ghostbloods can maybe exploit the mutual weakness and rise to prominence? But obviously that is just speculation :)
The white sand graphic novels were an interesting but failed experiment in my opinion. I recently started reading the prose version from the Branderson newsletter and it felt a bit like a revelation like: "ah so this is what they tried to do", some world building, characterisation and magic system intricacies just got lost in translation in between mediums. A shame, because I think the White Sand world has so many cool ideas and implications for the cosmere as a whole. Loved the video, listening to cosmere theories is always fun and I actually learned something as well, I either didn't know or had forgotten that Taldain was closed off from the rest of the cosmere. By the way, are you aware that the white sand graphic novels had a change in artists for the third volume? I found the change in art style quite jarring, nothing wrong with either art style, but they are quite distinct, making the third volume feel different from the other two.
Yeah, I've read bits of the prose version - the parts included in Arcanum Unbounded - and it's definitely clear that as an adaptation the comics are a little lacking. For instance, characters in the comics say things out loud that are part of the internal monologue in the book, and it just doesn't work. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Also, it seems that Trell, the villainous "God" of Mistborn Era II, is trying to sabotage the development of Scadrial. I'm not entirely sure about this, but we'll all find out tomorrow in The Lost Metal.
As far as I know, it is still possible to get the prose-version of White Sand from17th shard for free. It is sowewhat unpolished, as it did not go through the usual revision cycle, but brandon says it is the most readable of his pre-publication stories and I did enjoy it quite a lot.
There are many contradictions as of now, and it's implied that the Graphic Novels are more canon(it has more retcons like slatrification being kind of cut in the Graphic Novels)
@@genericallyentertaining Brandon hinted, that an official prose version is at least a possibility. I was wrong however concerning the unpublished version. It can be downloaded via a link in all of Brandons newsletters. I checked the last one (09-20-2022) and the link is right there in the first paragraph. It is the unpublished "Aether of Night" that is available from 17th shard.
Not only that, but I'm pretty sure that when Kenton is recovering from running the path and slaying the sand beast, there was a radio like machine on the bed behind him. It looked an awful lot like a 1980s type radio and it was really big
Interesting stuff. One thing to consider is that there is a shard called Invention that we know nothing about... If they are on a world with people, I assume they would have a lot of advanced tech.
You should be able to sign up for the his news letter on his website. There should be a link included when the news letter is sent out in order to request the unpublished prose version. If the link isn't in the letter, you may just be able to toss them an email. Some things have changed in the graphic novel, but having not read it, I'm not sure what. It's definitely worth the look if you are so inclined. Also, if you are up for it, you should be able to request Aether of Night unpublished novel from 17th Shard message boards.
The group of beings that shattered Adonalsium were wrong to think they could handle the Shards. The Shards are in control not the beings that were invested by the Shard as evidenced by Sazed or Ati who were a direct example of how little the vessel influences the power. The Cosmere is a mess. Hopefully, Hoid’s plan will work to help fix what is wrong.
Interesting stuff!! I’m a huge Cosmere fan, but I haven’t ever gotten around to White Sand, namely because of the lukewarm reaction from a lot of fans. Still really appreciate the attention you’re giving it tho! As for more theory videos, where do you think you’d dig into next? (I’d love to hear your thoughts and theories about Lost Metal!)
I'm definitely planning to do something for the Lost Metal! As for more theory videos, I'm not sure where I'll go next. Perhaps I'll do a run-down of some of my favorite, lesser-known fan theories that I've seen around on the different forums.
Considering TLM [Spoilers] It seems like maybe Autonomy is using Trell as a way to get control of one of the shardworlds most likely to develop space travel so she can stop it there too.
What's the name of the background music used in the video? It was great for setting the mood on how potentially dangerous Taldain could be in the Cosmere
I'm not certain that;'s the case. Autonomy is stated in took four of era two to actively have been fostering Taldain technological progress (in much the same way the words of founding catapulted Scadrial into an industrial revolution), but from what seems to happen in that book, she doesn't seem particularly confident in an ICBM. It could be she was just letting Wax's sister struggle on her own (as she is want to do) but some of the narration from wax indicates that he, at least, thinks that the ICBM would be advanced even by the standard's Autonomy is used to working with. And while Wax is certainly able to be wrong, he is far clever than I am, so I find his assessment to be worthwhile.
I really appreciate the support! And not to worry: most of my videos in the future won't require you to have read an entire book series to follow along. :)
I'm reading TLM right now, and suffice to say, I was NOT expecting this video to be so relevant to that book. I'm glad I released this when I did; now say I saw it coming. :)
White Sands was a neat concept, but I feel like it would have been better as a novel instead of a graphics novel. You're right, the pacing was wierd and I also felt like it was in fast-forward. I didn't feel ANY connection to any character, but the world-building aspect was awesome. I've read all three back-to-back 2 years ago, and I literally forgot that Autonomy was the shard there. So, I guess take that as an indicator to show how meh it is. Not as meh as the Rithmatist though, that one I couldn't even finish lol.
I'm still waiting for some characters who passed on in the books, specifically in the mistborn books to have some form of presence in the future. Possibly just as spread or something similar. The way they stretched was like a black he and so much detail was added. The people there were also made and weren't the original humans so they might even be spread like beings to begin with. It could help explain how other beings were made in the mistborn eras too and could apperently breed with humans after being modified by unity. Just ny chaos theory
I really want to read it but I don't do animated books. I have listened to the first chapter in arcanum unbounded, and it seems very cool. I'm just waiting for Sanderson to write it in prose
Everytime I read or watch something about the cosmere I am left wondering where all this information is coming from. I have read most of the cosmere books and I always end up on multiple coppermind pages about stuff I never heard about... For some things it makes sense as you would really only notice them after rereading some books. I did not realize the Khriss in Secret History was Khrissala, at the time I had not yet read White Sands. Or the fact that autonomys vessel is also known as Bavadin (I attribute that to my bad memory for names) But there is just so much stuff I just did not see at all. Like the fact that the Shard Autonomy is apperently invested in one of the Suns there... makes some sense in hindsight but I did not even thinkt to consider the possibility (Not sure if this is a spoiler or not since it does not directly come from the books) Sometimes I feel like even though i read (almost) all the books I am still being left out of some grander story Does anyone else feel like this or is it just me?
You're not at all alone. Brandon reveals a lot of information about the lore through interviews and signings, and fans have obsessively compiled it all over time. If it isn't in the books, though, it's not super important to one's enjoyment of the story: just bonus stuff for nerds.
@@genericallyentertaining Fortunately there are content creators like you to collect and distill the more interesting parts! It goes to show how much bigger the worldbuilding/stoeries in the cosmere (and persumably in most ficional works) actually are. Fortunately Brandon loves to tell us all about it when asked. It must be incredibly hard for him to keep inconsistencies from appearing.
I’ve been living under the assumption that the space between planets in the cognitive realm grows as people learn more about space. Anyone know if I’m an idiot, because I figured that would be a motive for someone somewhere to suppress technology for a while.
The graphic audio book is way more detailed and imo better than the graphic novel. They had access to the source material of the graphic novel and is much more detailed. Tons more about Khriss and none of it is in the coppermind yet.
What if the star system itself prevents space travel. Its two stars that have locked the planet in place which would have Huge gravitational and radiation effects on anything that leaves the planet within its safe bubble of space
There is actually already a prose version of the graphic novel though I dont know if it's available. However, there are audiobook versions of them on audible and it's over 15 hours of content. Very enjoyable read/listen lol. But the story is standalone and doesn't really have an influence on the overall cosmere. Only reason to read it aside from just wanting more cosmere books is to learn more about khriss.
We see the color changing sand in Rhythm of war, Khriss is in several other books, and just knowing about other worlds is important to understanding the cosmere
I mean, I've spent an embarrassing amount of time just scrolling through the Coppermind, but I'm still nowhere at the level of expertise as some of those people on the 17th Shard, lol.
What are you talking... Do you know about Threnody planet? Shards fought there and what they left behind were destructive and volatile creatures... You could even get kill if there is a new small campfire
