#4 did it for me! I’m in the medical field, and although I love helping people, but the long shifts are taking a toll on my body. I need a career change, and I’m looking into web developing. Thanks!

I am a 30 year old dude that always been intressed in coding. But never felt i was "smart" enough. But this year i decided, i wanna try it out. Started a subscription with a online site and now i am working on clearing their techdegree. I am hopefull for the future and at work i always keep on thinking about coding. When i get home i always put away 2-4 hours on normal weekdays for coding. On weekens its more like 8-12 hour of pure coding. I am so excited and hope this techdegree helps me land a work in the javascript full-stack department :)

4:04 List the classes that are required for a full "degree" that is NOT touching on programming or such, they will outnumber your computer classes, so the degree is about 'schooling' but NOT necessarily about training you for work or skill prepping you. And I say that having a Bachelors.

I only came across this video is because I need some positive reasons to remind myself why I chose to be a web developer in the first place. Recently, I've been stress and thinking negative at certain times when I code websites to where I enter into this zone called trials and errors. At times, I want to make the structure look simplistic and neat, but it doesn't always go in my favor and it gets me quite frustrated to the point I begin to have doubts that I'm bad at it. But after seeing your video here, just sharing some important notes on what is great about going for web developer, it gives me some sense of motivation to stay on the path and keep going despite failures. So thanks for posting this video! It gives me enough comfort to continue my time and practice on web development! Hopefully I will land a job on it soon, but for now I'm taking a online web course for a certificate.

The thing with the coding camps is that you only learn coding, that's it. The school system has been in place for many years and companies are not going to start hiring coding camp people over college people. College is a lot more expensive and college grads know a lot more than bootcamp people, they deserve to be hired over coding camp people. Sure maybe theres a 1% of coding camp people that are very good at coding but 99% of the people companies will hire are college grads. Because while coding camp people may be specialized in only coding, college students have been introduced to a lot of different classes that add value. If companies started hiring only bootcamp people the whole schooling system would go to shit. Every field would start a bootcamp thing and people would stop going to college and only get specialized in one thing.

Hello, I would just like to share what a great and motivational video this is. Especially when you were describing how you enjoy coding, (sitting in Starbucks with your laptop, large iced mocha with whip, coding all day) and I look around and here I am watching this video on my laptop, in a Starbucks, with a freaking iced mocha with whip and I’m pretty sure this was the most assuring moment that I’m pursuing what I was born to do and I would like to thank you for that.

After struggling for a long time to find a new job doing something I love, I recently hit a wall. Long story long I've done some real soul-searching and I'm pretty sure this is the right field for me! Your video makes it sound pretty awesome! I know I work hard and I love the idea of being my own boss. Thanks for the extra bit of inspiration!

I am an 87 year old who designed website for many years but stopped about 4 years ago when my wife passed away and I moved half way across the country to be near my daughter. I am considering doing more website designing, but wonder how far behind with the latest technology. I did design about 5-10 websites with Bootstrap. Prior to that I hand coded everything. Anyone have any thoughts about this? I should mention I was an Electronic Engineer all my working life.

I’m up and have been at work long before you talk about getting out of bed. I am trying to learn web development to hopefully supplement my income or create an entire shift in career (ultimately). I’ve fell in to the mistake of trying to learn too many things at once. It seems like the more you learn, the more shiny objects are dangled in front of your face. (Sass, scss, etc...) I found myself switching up too much to fully understand the fundamentals. I caught on to it myself, but I think it hindered me. I feel like sticking with the way one person structures their teachings may be the way to go, so I am going to look in to your videos and classes. Thank you for being a resource for people.

Can you tell me what you think of someone trying to get into that who is now 38 years, old never went to college but has about 22 years in the industry. I have a family member who back around Thanksgiving left a major cable company after being a cable designer since he was 17 years old. When he was 19 years old back in 1999 he was offered a salary with AT&T of $ 52,000 a year. About a year-and-a-half later was hired by two guys who left AT&T to create their own cable installing company and he was their designer.... so when he was 21 years old he was earning about a $100,000 a year working for them... but he did work a lot of weekends. He was doing really well for a couple years there and then a little bit before when Hurricane Katrina hit , the industry had gotten bad for independent contractors because all the companies wanted to make them employees and pay them so much less. He and his roommate had to relocate to several States and just follow the money for the next few years after that. He finally ended up working at the headquarters of one of the major cable companies again in 2013 and he was really miserable... ... he was so drained from having to argue with people in middle management who know nothing about cable design. His company wanted him I needed him for a position as a designer in Manhattan and they offered him $125, 000 . He flat-out refused and I don't blame him because he did not want to live in that part of the country. His job really dragged him down and aged him too...and he wasn't sleeping... basically is Health declined... the job was really killing his spirit. After he left that job he started sleeping better and looked so much healthier... it's incredible how much better he looks. He's got some kind of a part time job doing something with computers... I can't remember what and he also has another job involved with the roofing industry in a climate that has brutal, brutal summer heat and sometimes I'm afraid he's going to have a heart attack from it. This is someone who has a brilliant mind and who ,when he was 9 or 10 years came in 98 or 99th percentile in the whole country( America) for math. I had hoped he would have gotten a degree or two in math and he did think about it ...and then realized he could start making money right away working everyday during high school after classes with his friend which he started doing when he was 16. Surely he must have heard about web development... and he was happiest in the field when he and his friend somehow had the $4,000 program that allowed them to do cable design from the home instead of working at a company. He was doing exactly as you described... sleeping in late if he wanted to, not having to be stuck in rush-hour traffic , sitting in his pj's or underwear while he worked if he wanted to... while eating a bowl of cereal or tacos if he's so desired... with nobody telling him what he could and couldn't do. I feel so bad for him and I'm also worried because a lot of companies start looking for reasons to not hire people even when they are as young as 40 years old. I'm not sure if he already looked at web development and said nah... or what... because I can't imagine why he wouldn't want to be his own boss like that again and working from the home when everybody else has to be out the door on time to make other people rich , and only to be stuck in traffic . And then have to do it again everyday, day after day, week after week. Do you know of any cable designers who got burned out in the industry but are happily doing web development ? I know this is really long and some will say that I wrote a book.

I would agree that most companies do not care about a degree anymore however Amazon which is a company that is up-and-coming and I have no doubt will be a world dominant company expects you to have education in order for you to be a manager. I have an NBA just starting with the program and in just two years I can be the director of operations at any for film and center that I want to. But it only possible because of my education

Great video, and I think it's mostly accurate. But he makes freelancing sound WAY easier than it actually is. Freelancing is A LOT of work. Sure you can sleep in till 10am. But you're gonna have to work until 10pm to meet deadlines. Not only do you have to meet deadlines, you have to constantly generate new work, a good portion of your time will be in marketing yourself to find new clients, and also supporting old clients. You'll always have that uncertainty of when your next pay will be. One month you'll earn $10, the next you might earn $10,000... or not. Freelancing is awesome, but it is NOT easy.
@whatsdev
@whatsdev 6 лет назад
I agree with you 100%. Freelancing is not easy, but nothing is easy. Nothing worthwhile is easy. Having a full time job with all the commute and stress is extremely hard too but people just do it because they need to. Now, all I'm saying is that it's totally possible to gear that energy towards working on your own business and building your own dreams rather than someone else's. Again, since you have to wear many hats, it'll most likely be tougher than just blindly following orders from your boss at a job. But isn't it worth it?
@trentbosnic
@trentbosnic 6 лет назад
Is it worth it, I think it really depends. I've done both for quite a while now, but currently work full time. While freelancing is great because you have no boss and you get to work on building your own company and future. Working full time pays well, gives you stability, and means you don't need to always be available to work. You have less responsibility which means you can focus on side projects, or just chill with family or play games without any guilt outside of those full-time hours. In my current job I'm working on building the front-end of a cloud based health care app in React. I get to learn valuable skills for my career and also work on a project that will help thousands of people, so I find it to be incredibly fulfilling. When I was freelancing I was just building landing pages/WordPress sites and email campaigns for small/medium business, who are selling products that I don't care about and that don't really mean anything. So yeah, I think it just depends on individual interests and life goals. Both a great in their own ways.
@simbobcrafts4843
@simbobcrafts4843 6 лет назад
Nothing Would remote working for a company be the best of both worlds?
@trentbosnic
@trentbosnic 6 лет назад
Yeah I think that's the best balance between both. I think freelancing is better IF you're in demand because you can charge a lot more per hour and you control your time. But remote working for an agency is great for having security, decent pay and it can lead to more work once you have a reputation. I think the ideal gig is having 2-3 days remote work for an agency, and fill in the rest with your own clients, so you can pick your projects without having that feeling of insecurity.
