Why You Should Grow Purple Sweet Potatoes | Planting Sweet Potatoes in Raised Beds
A few months ago, I found organic Stokes purple sweet potatoes at the local grocery store, and I decided to buy one so we could propagate sweet potato slips from it and try to grow our own.
In the past we have only grown Purple Passion sweet potatoes, and we enjoyed their taste, and so when we saw another variety of purple sweet potato that we could grow, we jumped at the chance.
These purple sweet potatoes contain anthocyanins and we will talk about anthocyanins benefits, in cluding that they are helpful and have antioxidant properties, and that is just one of the benefits of growing purple sweet potatoes.
In this video, we talk about why you should grow purple sweet potatoes, we talk a little about anthocyanins health benefits, and we show you how we are planting these Stokes sweet potatoes, and how we are trying to prevent vole damage this year from occuring to our sweet potatoes. We don't know if this will be the solution to stop the e-vole empire, but this is another step we are taking to try to keep our crop whole.
If you have any questions about how to plant sweet potatoes in raised beds or how to grow sweet potatoes in raised beds, let us know in the comments, and we will try to help you.
Thank you so much for watching!

In Florida Stokes Purple Sweet Potatoes grow like wildfire. The vines will invade neighboring pots if you bury a little of it, then it grows exponentially 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and it takes over. I planted in one 20 gallon bag in late Feb and ended up with 400 gallons (there were twenty 20 gallon canvas bags and as the pole beans died back these took over). So much greens it made a waterfall over the 2 foot high wall, 30 feet long big enough to surf on. About 60 flowers at once (all from one original spud, now 2 years ago). Flowers are Morning Glory related and brought the hummingbirds back. You can eat the greens (saute in butter and olive oil, like a hearty spinach) and later you can eat the flowers. When you see the flowers it's ready to harvest. The skin are so soft you don't need to peel. Candied yam recipe works and hash browns. If you boil them, they only take minutes and the water is INKY dark (I save it for stew). I harvested mine on Thanksgiving and it was a blessing.

I just let mine grow from one and the vines took over. I didn't try slips at all, but thank you.

When you slice them they ooze a white sap that means they are super sweet! If you see holes they lead to little bugs. I cut away parts until there are no holes/bugs.

So excited to see your harvest this year. I planted my purple sweet potatoes over the last month and I so excited to finally be growing my own. They are so much thicker, creamier and the best flavored sweet potato I’ve ever eaten. Happy growing 😁

We grew two varieties of purple sweet potato last year and you are right they do taste a lot different (and we agree better!) than the orange varieties. We still like having some of the orange ones though. The hardware cloth should help deter the voles and it looks like you have it right to the edges (nowhere for them to slip below it). It was really interesting watching you plant the slips out. We have always rooted the slips before planting them out but that could be a game changer simply cutting the slips right off the plant and planting them directly out. We may have to try this. We have some monster sweet potato vines growing in the tops of our fish tanks which we could harvest from (we were thinking it was getting to late to root them). Great to see you planting them out!

With blueberry goat cheese it’s a desert. The texture is amazing. I started them a few weeks ago with several ends I cut off of store bought organic purple potatoes.

Looks great. And on your mole problem buy juice fruit gum break one stick into little pieces and place where you have the pest this will get rid of them. My grandfather swears by it.

My personal favorite is the Moloka'i Purple. It was developed in the 60s. I've seen an identical variety being sold as the All Purple variety, but I personally believe they're the exact same thing as the Moloka'i Purple. I have tried to grow a few other varieties, but yeah, I prefer the flavor of the purple, and they seem to be EXTREMELY vigorous.

There are a couple of types of purple, sweet potato the one you really want is the Japanese purple sweet potato that is the one that cares the most nutrition. Japanese purple, sweet potato, is purple on the outside and purple on the inside.

I took your advice a while back and ordered 12 Japanese Sweet potato slips here in Zone 5b in SE Wisconsin. The company was kind enough to actually send me 21, so I have two horse troughs that are crazy full of vines right now. I did not know about the vole problems you had so did nothing to protect the potatoes, so we’ll see what we get. The weather has been so perfect for them, hot, hot,hot! I am so excited to see what the harvest brings as I have never thought to try growing these before I saw your video. Thanks so much! I will let you know how they turn out. You are a great teacher, btw!

@@GutenGardening They seem to be doing really well. The Japanese Beetles were having a field day with them but Neem seems to have solved that problem. The leaves are starting to yellow a bit. I would like to keep them in the ground for another month. When are you planning on harvesting yours? And thank you for the kind response!!

So i ended up with about 20 plus pounds of beautiful, and some not so beautiful potatoes. I was very happy with my first attempt. The container closest to the water source definitely did better. I saved cuttings which did root beautifully, but when I planted them about a month ago in the house, they died. I am sad about that, but i do still have four stems that have roots but no leaves. They are still in the water. Yesterday, I put them under grow lights to see if they sprout some leaves. Today I put a heating pad underneath as they are by a cold window. I am hopeful, but not optimistic. I feel like they are in Intensive Care.

@@yournewking2999 I want to say Gurneys. Ill have to find my journal, It’s that time of year anyway, and verify that. I was very happy with the results but killed almost all of my cuttings last month when I planted them in the house. Not sure what happened. I guess I should have just left them in the water until spring. IDK

Anthocyanins and polyphenols are the keys to making red wine (which is actually made from PURPLE grapes) so beneficial. And it’s a fermented beverage. The two countries with largest pops over 100 (Japan, Italy) consume diets high in anthocyanins and fermented beverages. The Japanese, with the worlds largest population of centenarians, even eat large volumes of fermented foods on top of all of that. Definitely food for thought.

I'm eating some purple sweet potatoes for dinner. Delicious! They have a uniquely dense texture that I like. I roast them and eat them with butter and plain yogurt. That's how I prepare my baked potatoes too. Are the leaves edible?
@geekygardens
@geekygardens 2 года назад
Have you planted slips without first letting them root in the past? I haven't tried that. Most folks I've seen put them in water to grow roots and I did that as well when I was growing slips in water. Now I grow my slips in soil (seed potato buried completely) and the slips tend to start growing roots while still attached to the seed potato.

Hello sir! We have planted slips like this before. You are right, we usually let the roots develop in water a bit first, but as long as you keep the area watered they will do just fine. The ones I planted in this bed are doing great!

You have planted 10X more plants in that box than what you should. Purple sweet potatoes should be 60-90cm apart.
