Why You Should Have Fewer Opinions

This video discusses opinions: how to have better opinions and why having uneducated opinions makes you totally suck. While, of course, looking at the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
Call me old fashioned but it feels like there used to be a little more humility in the world. More people seemed to know how to express an opinion without sounding like asses.
People understood that not everything was perfect, sometimes experts got things wrong, but generally, the guy or girl in charge knew what the fuck they were doing.
Today, due to the joys of social media, we’re regularly exposed to legions of people who believe they know what the fuck they’re talking about… when they do not. And, unfortunately, the more clueless these people are, the more confident in their pronouncements and opinion they seem to be.
In psychology, this is known as the “Dunning-Kruger Effect.” It’s a psychological phenomenon where people who are bad at something believe they are good at it, and people who are good at something believe they are bad at it. Amateurs are overconfident in opinion and experts are under confident. Newbies believe they’ve got it all figured out and the weathered veterans understand that nothing is really known for sure.
This video discusses opinions: how to have better opinions and why having uneducated opinions makes you totally suck.

Omfg You guys stop taking this seriously Obviously it has a deeper meaning When people don't know much, they like talking about all the great things they have done, Their goals, how smart they are etc.. It's because they are overwhelmed by their ego's and have blurred vision of reality. But when a person realises that they don't know anything and learning can be eternal, true knowledge and learning becomes available thus they humble themselves and don't see meaning in bragging and talking about themselves as much.

I always find it best to speak honestly and say that I don’t know enough about a certain subject to have a concrete opinion on it. Sometimes I might add that I see some valid points from both sides, and I’d need to be more informed to have a solid opinion. I might say I instinctively feel a certain way, but that it’s not based on knowledge or evidence. Or I might say that the subject is way too complicated to have an informed opinion on, and since time is limited, I’m unlikely to do the study necessary to understand it. Or I may have an opinion as a lay person, but I realize that additional info could change that opinion. Quite often I simply say “I don’t know”. I think people appreciate an honest answer, even if it’s uncertain. But then, I’m not a teacher, or psychologist or anything, so no one expects a polished opinion from me!

The second we subscribe to dogma is the perfect time to re-analyze how our opinions are being formed by emotion instead of unbiased, empirically evidenced data. This is a dangerous road to traverse for it is the continuous search for truth that keeps dogma from permanently embedding itself into our beliefs.

There is so much information available that it becomes so hard to distinguish between what's noise and what's valuable. What makes this worse, is the pressure that you "have to have an opinion, otherwise you just don't care about it". But honestly, there's a new problem everyday, and we just can't keep up with everything, in a rational and clear way of thinking. Not saying that we shouldn't care about it, but that things are extremely complex. There are different contexts and a bunch of variables that we don't know about. Yet, we all jump to conclusions about something and someone so easily. Nowadays, I just like to listen instead of focusing on talking. Listening to different opinions and counterpoints of different sides. The more I listen, the more I understand that I don't really know much. And that's ok, I think.

@@hichipoky yeah I agree. It's great to discuss complex topics, as we can get new perspectives that we haven't thought about. But for that to happen, we also need to be open/available to listen and have our beliefs challenged.

The bad thing is not to have an opinion, but the EGO behind it. We assume that our opinion is the definitive answer and refuse to change it, present arguments for it, hear other opinions and admit that we may be wrong. It is OK to have any opinion as long as we are willing to test its validity and change it if it proves wrong. Education, information, debate and cooperation is the real way. Opinion implies getting info and thinking about it - nothing wrong with that as long as the reason for it is understanding and getting better results.

My GF had this exact problem with me once (and by once i mean a lot of times throughout our relationship, some recently). We've had a discussion about "how i have an opinion about everything". It got to the point i was explaining and giving my opinion to her about things that were in her area of expertise, which doesn't make sense 'cuz there's no way i know more than her about those things. It's insane how i can talk so much, and have so many opinion, and even talk so much *about myself*. I've been trying to talk less and "have less opinions about things", but... it's hard to stop a bad habit
@hgzmatt
@hgzmatt 3 года назад
There is no rule that says you need to have x amount of experience to be allowed to speak up. Don't let someone bully you into submission.. if they know better, they should explain why. I like to discuss things because I'm interested in hearing other's perspectives and learning.. it's not to talk down or dismiss other's opinions. Often.. valuable ideas come from outside a field.. creative ideas are from thinking outside the box. Experts are so focused, they don't see the forest for the trees.

Whenever I encounter someone who has a very strong sense of conviction about their opinion on a nuanced topic that requires a ton of expertise, I'm suspicious. I searched for a video about having less opinions. I feel so tired of my brain *always* making some opinions. I'm chronically online so that doesn't help either. I can't stop daydreaming about argumenting with people online or saying my opinion out loud on the internet. I'm so tired of this. But this video helped me. I need to remember, that I probably just don't know enough. Yes, maybe I could convince some people to have the "right" opinion or at least understand the other side. But is it worth my time and energy? I should prioritize things that really matter to me, few things I'll be still fighting for, but others? No, I'll give my focus rather to the things that help me grow.

Totally agree! On top of what you are saying, Mark, cognitive biases + beliefs play a huge role in one's opinion-shaping process. What happens often is, while people do get fairly exposed to the information, they filter out what doesn't fit into their pre-established beliefs. Two more points: a. Constantly challenging pre-established beliefs is time and energy consuming for the brain (let alone emotionally draining). Brain's default mode is maintenance mode for evolutionary reasons. b. Having opinions makes people feel better about themselves, makes them more confident and therefore more sexy, metaphorically + literally. People unconsciously realize that it pays to have strong and many opinions! This is something that should not be underestimated too.

Dear Sir Manson, I have read both of your books last year and I instantly got hooked. I’ve been a huge bookworm ever since I was a kid and have purposely avoided ‘self help’ books ever since until I got your book last year. I then ended up reading a lot of non fiction books because of yours and I have learned a lot since then. I recently discovered that this YT channel exists and I’ve been binging your videos ever since! I am a huge fan of your works, be it on paper or on videos. Also, this video’s timing is perfect! I have been thinking a lot about this for a week now ever since I decided to deactivate my social media accounts for the same reason that I get flooded with a lot of different and opposing opinions every second that I find it hard to know the root of an issue or to basically just know what the hell is actually happening. I often think of myself as dumb for whenever I try to understand something, more so about a popular social issue or something on the news, I only find myself asking more and more questions and basically questioning what I know to the point where I sometimes end up doubting my opinions about the information that I have accumulated! It can get frustrating and overwhelming sometimes to see how loud people can get with the tiniest of information in their pockets. Freedom of speech is indeed nice, but not everything is worth listening to. Also, not all that is written well using ‘impressive words’ are actually ‘correct’. Fancy words and opinions without facts and substance at the end of the day are still just...fancy words and opinions. You still get to filter what and who to listen to. Thank you again, Sir! I’ve been learning a bunch so far. Looking forward for more.

Except the government has been pretty much wrong on everything most of the time. So yeah, if people don't trust politicians and bureaucrats there is probably a good reason for that.

I hoped that internet would end misinformation and lack of knowledge, but nope, we managed to f*ck it up, too.

I would love to introduce you to a sales methodology, Mark, that says exactly this. And the spit-shine sales people always hate hearing it. And I love it.

I agree with you. Nowadays everybody has his own "wise" and "experienced" opinion regarding everything. I don't leave opinion about topic, when Im not experienced in it.

Once I had to listen to my dentist on 'How to install a new stereo in your car?'' for almost 45 minutes. Needed a second root canal after that.

For example I talk to myself about how race does not always equate to skin tone/eye color/hair color/hair texture, which the majority of people across races/gender always assume race is always connected to those things.

Isn't this common from 1000s of years? Most people are jokers just to feel valued so they will make up any kind of gibberish in any gibberish field.

Im a mathematician and during my first year of teaching math to high schoolers, due to my inexperience and still learning the syllabus, my students never seemed to entirely trust me. I think thats what happens with the scientists nowadays. We got used to ask what do i do for headaches for heart disease for hip problems and we got back from them a straight forward answer and a list of therapies and medicine to take. Now during a brand new virus where science still learns about and new research contradicts older ones about it, people suddenly lost their trust in science. All of a sudden every scientist is working against humanity and they conspire to our disadvantage. Take it easy folks its new and we will make it through like we always do

No, it is because big pharma has influenced scientists. Take johnson and johnson and the opiate crisis playing down effects. Using the same methods to peer review etc. Same thing with other pharma companies.

To be fair I have been guilty for this as well in the past sometimes, now I try to see the limits of my knowledge. It isn't so hard to see the limits of your knowledge, it's just something to be aware of. Having a new perspective on something is always nice and less hard to obtain than knowledge I think.
