If your struggling with being worried about ‘ugly art’ in your main sketchbook I’d recommend what I call a ‘Crap book’ Having a smaller sketchbook where you can get out quick doodles/thumbnails along with you regular sketchbook. I’ve found it really helpful for getting my hand moving and not worrying about the quality!

I have, since last year, exactly this thing I recommend getting the worst quality sketchbook possible, the ones that are so cheap, ugly, and horrifyingly unconfortable that you think, "wow this sucks @SS, like, very hard, it's horrendous", THOSE are the best "crap" books!!! If it is in the worst state possible, you feel sure about "ruining" it more, because, it doesn't matter, it was already a disaster! It's very reassuring to me to buy the cheapest notebooks out there, or ones on sale on stationary shops(old planners from previous years that didn't sell well are always for astonishing cheap prices, same with unpopular children's character ones, like the girls from W.I.T.C.H., which i got for literally 20 us cents, and it has pink pages!! Love the series btw), because they are so crusty and crumped, i even feel better about being the one who bought them in the first place!!❤ Buying when them were being the worst ones(quality wise), and/or those that nobody wanted, gives you a sense of freedom that no other clean blank expensive sketchbook does, at least to me… It is simply so refreshing and exciting the experience to make a discarded item that was going to end up in a landfill into something beautifull and worthy to keep, is like encountering your best friend and talk shit about someone you both hate while sharing a meal and just chill, it fills you with the fuzzy happy feelings, it just feels SO good!! I really recommend it, my favorite part is always decorating the worn out covers with patterns and stickers, is something i really wished nobody missed out on, it's the most fun and liberating part ever.

Yes!!! This helped me so much. I always stressed about using my "good" sketchbook for exploration of stuff I KNOW I am not good at. So having a place to freely experiment, a book I never show to anyone, that noone will ever see, has given me so much freedom and I have actually started to treat my "actual" sketchbook a little less preciously too

This may not make much sense, but allowing myself to create ugly art has resulted in me creating a lot of my best pieces. You'd be surprised how much shame and self-consciousness can get in the way of creating a good piece. Either because the stress and frustration disrupts your flow or because you threw away a potentially amazing drawing that was either completely fixable or was simply ugly because it was not yet complete. Some of my favorite drawings in my sketchbook right now had some really ugly moments while I was working on it. Almost gave up on them a few times. But I told myself "it doesnt matter if it's ugly" and pushed through, only for the final piece to be beautiful. Sure, I have a few pieces that stayed ugly, but that's just a natural part of growing as an artist.

For a while, I’ve just been wanting to polish my art style and skills, but today i actually just did some doodles. It was great to just make a silly sketch of whatever I wanted onto the page. I didn’t want to leave empty space like I usually do (I have so many pages with just 1-2 small sketches), so I crammed them all and made it like a little puzzle. It helped a ton relieving stress I didn’t even know I had. I love doodling now.

recently theres this one thought that i get most of the time after i draw something and it really demotivates me, i always think to myself “whats the point of drawing all of this when no one would care about it that much and would probably only look at it for 3 seconds”
@hydengeekstudio
@hydengeekstudio 2 месяца назад
That is a super demotivating thought. Its kind of tough, but the way I learned to get rid of those thoughts is by remembering that I am making art for myself. Maybe try drawing your favorite things or things that make you happy. To me art is first and foremost for the creator and not the audience... the audience engagement comes later when people see how much fun you're having. 💖

I'm sorry that happened to you. It is really hard not to internalize criticism; especially when it comes from "friends" besides, realism is so overrated in my opinion. If you ever need someone to share your art with, feel free to message it to me on my Instagram. I will be happy to receive your art. If you want (positive) tips, you can put that in the message too and I would love to help. Honestly though, as long as you're happy making art, that's all that matters. Sweetheart, is anime realistic? are cartoons realistic? is abstract art and expressionism realistic? is van goh realistic?? no, they are not, but they are still beautiful art is not about being 'realistic' or 'pretty,' it's about having fun, telling a story, sharing a part of you with other people. your art is amazing. It is beautiful and perfect just the way it is. Even if it isn't realistic, even if the proportions are wrong, the colours don't go well together, and the shading is crap, your art is still beautiful and amazing you don't need to be good at anatomy and colour theory and shading and perspective to make good art. your art is wonderful just the way it is.

One thing I like to do every once and a while, especially if I'm feeling like my art isn't great, is to just take a piece of paper and draw something with the fullest intent to throw the paper away when I’m done. If I’m not going to keep the paper then what does it matter if it looks good or not. Because of this I drew some of the best anatomy I had ever drawn at the time. (Oh yeah, I love the SpongeBob references)

I have some more advice for those who want to start but just can’t. Make yourself a table with columns “norm, day, week, month, year”. Write down your quota of drawings per day, for example from 1 to 3, increase every month. Complete the minimum requirement daily, summarize weekly and monthly. If the plan is completed, then paint the cell green, and if you mess up, then write zero and mark the cell with a red marker.This will add discipline and you will want to get at least some sketch done every day to mark the cell with beautiful green color.
@hydengeekstudio

I love using ink to get warmed up, before a large piece, it keeps me from getting to hung up on my sketches because I know I can't change them. Ink has actually become my favorite medium, and I now rarely sketch in pencil anymore unless I'm making a water color piece or Prismacolor piece, and I now own more bottles of ink then I know what to do with lol. If your interested in getting into ink as a sketch medium, I highly recommend getting a fountain pen and cheap bottle of ink! but a ballpoint pen also does the trick!| Keep drawling everyone!

Instant follow from me for this video. This is the first time I’ve come across you but I love your message and your style. Just this week I started a sketchbook for just doodles and random art for no particular reason so I can have fun. There’s no purpose other than to make pretty colors or slap paint down or scribble with markers and I’ve left no room for perfectionism to sabotage me. I’ve had art block connected to my ptsd for years, and I’m proud to say I’ve drawn 4 days in a row! I couldn't be bothered to draw properly for ages bc of practise burn out and nothing turning out the way I wanted. So I gave it a break and went back to sculpting (an old hobby) whilst making ugly sketches of things I wanted to make, I found those things actually more appealing and satisfying than the other art I was doing before where I put SO much effort 😅 Another interesting thing, because I was drawing as if I was "sculpting" on the paper, it gave me a fresh approach. I feel like finally I found my style and best way of expression after all these years

This video somehow ends up in my recommendation list and i must say...Yes. Ugly art is actually fun to do. I was struggling to make the most perfect art like either 3d realism or 2d realism...stuffs like that...until i sort of quit art for about two or three years i think. But...after a long while... I came across Trevor Henderson's illustrations and i was...amazed and inspired at the same time. And so... i started to pick up my pencil and start drawing again. Trying not to care and starts drawing ugly or weird art makes me happy again (of course there are at times i would draw normal arts cause some people would freak out when they saw that 😂) When i make ugly art... it somehow makes me look at certain things that helps me to improve my art bit by bit especially when it comes to anatomy. (it's really weird isn't it? 😆) In conclusion, making ugly art isn't so bad after all. 😊

Brilliant video!! I think it’s important to reemphasize the importance of your statement on posting “ugly art”. I would strongly encourage posting it. There’s something freeing about showing off something you’ve been really vulnerable in the creation of, and just, stepping back and allowing it to be in the limelight. It builds so much confidence in what you do, as it strips away the anxiety you’d have making the art in the first place. It deserves to exist and exist OUT THERE because YOU made it. Not because it looks good, or could make you look good, but because it shows off you and your journey as an artist, and holds no shame about it, which is EXACTLY what every artist needs. Shame is what I think holds back a lot of our greatest potentials.

the "ugly art helps you notice your mistakes" part resonated with me so much I made a fairy drawing a while ago and it was horrible. none of my drawings were good (bc my anatomy is crap) but that one was specially bad. A few months later (months where I hated my drawings bc of my crap anatomy) I looked back at that faery drawing and I noticed that I drew arms like sticks. they were so thin and weird and I did that every time, and now my characters don't look weird as hell because their arms aren't literal sticks. My anatomy is still pretty bad, but it's not a flaming pile of poo anymore. at least I can draw a character in a neutral standing position now without it looking weird I will start making ugly drawings intentionally now, this video was amazing

Yes,the best art that I've liked is my "ugly art" and yet I can't help but wanna do "pretty art" even though it makes me wanna quit art. Ive decided to just do my ugly doodles cause I like them, and so so will someone else. I follow people who do cool art that's not conventionally pretty I think imma stop following people who do only "pretty art" on instagram cause even though I like looking at it my brain cant help but be sad.😂 I think this is because I keep pushing against my own art style. Personally I like looking at is and uea would like to color likem them but I like drawing gritty things that scare me a bit. Ive always noticed that Im the most sad and harsh on myself when Im pushing against what I really want deep down. It takes a really long time but I notice this and then change direction towards what my body/brain is trying to tell me.

Instagram is a rough place for sure but as long as you use it for entertainment rather than study, it may feel better. It took me so long to realize that the feeling that I got looking at a piece of art that I found beautiful was way different than the feeling that I get when I'm making a scrungly piece of trash art. 😁 Also if you want it enough, you can take elements from art pieces that you like and integrate them into your style. For example; if you make gritty/scary art but you love ethereal pastel pieces, try making a gritty art piece with that color scheme. It's super fun to mash up contrasting ideas. ✨💖

Because your feelings about your art can change. Sometimes you hate an idea but come around to it, other times you like something but then don't like it and have to work hard to make it something you like again. Also making bad art can be funny! Instead of it being a reflection of your skills as a whole, it can be a funny little thing you did "totally on purpose" that you laugh about with friends. Don't get caught up on mistakes, instead be a hypeman who cheers every time you do something, no matter how small :3 Doing things is better than never doing anything at all

I think someone already answered your question nicely here but I would also like to add that this is encouragement to find joy in the things that you make regardless of how they look. If you put negative emotions on your creativity, it may undercut any motivation that you may have. It is more likely that you'll be happy to continue creating if you accept your creative obstacles and work to improve rather than trying to slam all of your energy into something that you really want to turn out perfect. A point that I wish I added to this video is that finding comfort in your "ugly" art will allow you to cultivate the skills enough to make some of the most beautiful art. (At least that was my experience. 🤷‍♂️) Thank you for watching and commenting! 💖✨

@@anactualtree652 I guess that makes some sense... but I don't really think that's how my brain seems to work.

@hydengeekstudio Bottom line, I'm a super perfection. I can't complete a project unless I know I can satisfy myself with it 70% of the way in the end. If I know I don't have the skills to pull it off, I will not attempt. My mental health is already in the gutter most of the time, and as much as I do want to try, I have a crippling phobia of failure that prevents. No doubt, both you and @anactualtree652 's advice is good, but I just don't think it clicks with my brain. Unfortunately, I haven't found much advice that seems to help me yet. It motivates me in the moment, but it is usually quickly stamped out by the dynamic I mentioned earlier. Thanks for trying, though :(

"If you're able to move on from one art piece, it's easier to jump to the next one, without fear that you'll mess up the 'perfect' piece you just did" Oh my god.... You somehow managed to put it into words. I can't tell you how many times I used to finish a piece of art I was really proud of, but then when I tried to move on to the next one, I'd just find myself admiring the previous one, feeling that mounting pressure to make something that could surpass it. This was an eye-opener, I can't thank you enough

Ugh! I think the only reason that I was able to explain it is because I have experienced this kind of paralyzing fear for literal decades. 😅 I can honestly say that this switch has helped with this so much. ✨
