I purchased factory referb R6 body from Canon online store for $1700 with RF24-105 f4 L lens for $720. The camera and lens arrived in new condition. I couldn't be happier using this camera. It's like cheating, all my shots are in sharp focus. I just add RF16 f2.8 and RF50 f1.8. I used to miss most of my shots with EF50 f1.4 due to no IS in the lens. Not the case with R6 and RF16 and RF50, all shots are sharp. I love it. Looking for long telephoto for wild shots. After that I'm all set.
Have been using the R6 for close to an year now and agree with all the points except the 20MP sensor size being enough; well file sizes may be smaller but certainly you cannot crop your shots too much, and in wildlife photography you always are at a distance and need to crop even with a biggie len like a 800mm or so
even that is debateable. an 8mp image presents a file that will be printed at the maximum printing capabilities of all but the highest end, commercial based printers. unless you are cropping that file down to less than 8pm equivalent or need to print above and beyond 8x10 it's really only pixel peepers who will notice anything. hell drum scan files i have from the early 2000's from slides which have amazing detail were only about the same size as an 8-12mp DSLR file (35mm-645 scans)
@@blackyvertigo sometimes in wildlife clicks you really need to crop down into a tiny portion of the frame, that's the only time where u feel the need for more pixels, otherwise 20MP is more than enough
Well for a week now I have had an R6 sitting in an online shopping cart just waiting for me to decide whether or not I click that purchase button. I have the R and I love it. Earlier last year I upgraded from ver1 of the 100-400 EF to the 100-500 RF and it made a huge difference. I can afford an R5, but for a hobbyist like me the price was giving me pause. Your enthusiasm for the R6 has toppled me off the fence so today I will hit that buy button, thanks!
I bought an R6 earlier this year and have been very impressed. Here in the UK where it's so cloudy and dull a lot of the time the iso performance has meant that I can get photos on days where it would previously been impossible. Many days I have to raise the iso to 20000 just to be able to achieve shutter speeds of 1/1000, but with a little bit of help from On1 Photo Raw, I can still get images far better than I previously would have thought possible. Since going digital 20 years ago, I have progressed from 20D to 40D then 80D, before swapping to the R6, and the jump to this camera has seen bar far the best improvement in my keeper rate. The one thing I miss is the reduced reach from moving to a crop sensor to full frame, but I still have the 80D, and haven't used it since buying the R6, so I can't miss it that much.
@@Sanjiocom Without a shadow of doubt, for me the RF 100-500. It is a bit limited with a maximum aperture of 7.1 at 500mm (and also quite expensive). However with the iso performance of the R6 you can get away with much higher iso, one of the favourite photos I have taken was at iso 25600.
Would be interesting to see a side-by-side showdown between the R6 and A7IV for Wildlife applications. Don't think you can make a bad choice with either, but it would be fun.
I have an EOS5D Mk4 and had ordered an R7. Fortunately delivery was delayed by 2 months so I had ordered an R6 which should arrive shortly. Greatly enhanced my expectations by watching your videos, but most of my photography is local wildlife here in the UK. Wish I could get back to South Africa to try it out properly.
Switched to the R6 back in November last year, it's an amazing camera! Haven't tapped into Wildlife photography yet, but when I do it's nice to know that the R6 can handle this style of shooting. Great video!
Nice video! I actually put off watching it for several days because of the NOT in the title. I guess it worked because I did save it to watch later and finally did watch it tonight. I already own the R6 and agree with everything you said. I originally wanted an R5 but I got a deal on the R6 with several lenses and the battery grip so I pulled the trigger on it and have no regrets. I primarily shoot bird photos and have developed a workflow that uses Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Sharpen that allows me to crop quite a bit and still get great detail with the end result being really nice photos. I find that I prefer the noise reduction in Gigapixel to that of their dedicated AI Noise Reduction app. I only do this for a the “keepers” that I want to share so I am not having to store lots of huge images. I do prefer the video setup of the R5. The R6 doesn’t do well if you just press the video button in one of the stills modes. You really have to change it to video with the mode dial to get full functionality. Not a big problem for me but I would prefer the system from the R5 for video.
Very good and I informative video. I have the R6 since August 2021 and are now at 15,000 shots. I live in Denmark and take all my photos within 10 min. from where I live next to Roskilde Fjord. The fjord is 800m wide where I live. Not big animals like those in your video but birds, large and small: e.g. swans, geese, ducks, coot, blue tit, swallows to falcons, etc...I do not use a hide so far. I use dual back-button like you describe. And it works. With some birds better than with other. Also on cloudy Scandinavian winter days. Also I'm impressed with the dynamic range of the sensor. I am exclusively using handheld and just recently upgraded my RF 600mm to RF 800mm f/11. Less 2 kg inclusive the R6.
@@TheSafariExpert Hi I have the RF600 f11, the EF 400 with x2, Tamron 150-600 Love the feel and focusing , love the flippy screen but getting better results with 5dsr.
Thanks for your prompt response. I was aware that with dslrs the images are very decent but I asked since I was debating whether it was worth investing in it. There seems to be some disagreement whether it can give sharp pictures when used on a full frame mirrorless camera.
I’ve recently moved from a Canon 77D to the R6, and I’m not disappointed, but it’s not what I expected, again I’m not disappointed as such. I think it’s the combination of moving to a full frame sensor and fewer megapixels which makes me think that the image results appear slightly soft, compared to my 77D. Is this a learning curve of moving to a full frame camera? The dynamic range straight out of camera is beautiful, I’d almost be happy to not edit them, autofocus modes are magic (when the subject is clearly separated from its background), it’s also very intuitive to use with back button AF.
James, the R6 should out-perform the 77D in all aspects, so I think it’s just a case getting used to it. Your images shouldn’t appear soft. If they do, it’s either the lens or slow shutter speeds, not the camera. Enjoy getting to know it and I hope you get some cracking shots.
Unfortunately there are now ‘perfect’ settings for wildlife. It all depends on the situation (light, conditions and goals). But typically I shoot in Aperture Priority with a low f-stop in AI Servo (continious Auto Focus)
I went through the same thing and bought the R6. I used it for a year and have sent it back to my camera shop to sell on consignment as a trade against an R5. I used to use a 7Dii and missed the extra reach as I photograph a lot of small song birds, so hoping the R5 will let me crop a little tighter than the R6 or shoot in crop mode at 18MP. The R6 was an awesome camera though, really enjoyed it for portrait work and milky way shoots.
Excellent presentation. What if I could afford the R5 instead of the R6? I mean is the R5 as good or better than the R6 especially that I would use the camera for general use during Hollidays & some portraits as well. Kindly advise
@@TheSafariExpert It’s been pretty good! I use my R5 as much as my R6 . Love my R6 if am doing a wedding were there is low light. But for wildlife its a little different. So for example. i will put me 600 F4 on my R5 and I will have that usually on my tripod. I will have my R6 with the 100-500 on my shoulder for closer shots. I wish I could post some Wildlife pictures here to show you. The results have been great.
ok after watching this a few times I purchased the R6 from Outdoorphoto. Thank you Villiers for another very helpful video. Next up a trip to Hoedspruit and to book some lessons :)
Wonderful positive review. Is it easy to switch from photo/video mode and back? Also do you film in a log profile because I believe that’s when you get the highest bit quality
I also switch a lot between photo and video and have found the best and quickest way to do this is to customise my M-Fn button. You can do this in the “customize buttons” menu and look out for the 📷 ↔️📹 then remember to assign it on both the photo and video profiles. It works great
Born free, you can use the M-fn button in the R6 to switch between video and photo modes, but I prever to use it to switch between auto focus modes (spot, single, small cluster, large zone, etc). Instead, I just press the record button when I’m in Av if I want to film something.
Great review Villiers ! You would have convinced me to get this camera, if only I wouldn't have bought it already 3 months ago ;-) But I fully stand by your arguments. Coming from a DSLR, I feared the EVF, but on the R6 I love it. An indeed amazing AF. One day I took 4344 shots on 2 batteries. Geniet met volle teugen van jullie prachtige natuur, groetjes uit het kille Vlaanderen.
What happens when it needs fixing 5 yrs from now.. Canon isn't going to make parts for it at some point. BTW I have this body only because I have ef glass. These will only be on the used market and canon will abandon the ef system
Great review! I’ve been looking at the R6 recently after returning from my own trip to Botswana. If you used a two camera body set up, which camera would you pair with your R6? There were so many photographers out there who had two bodies (like a full frame and a crop sensor, which they paired with different lenses).
Justin, if I had the money, I'd pair it with an R5, simply because the setup is so similar and the R5's massive sensor basically allows you to crop to APS-C sensor sizes. If budget is an issue, perhaps a Canon 90D DSLR.
Trying to get the eye AF to lock onto a Wildebeest's eye was a laugh 😂..I am blessed to have R5 and R6... love them... The EF100-400 and 400 F2.8 mkII AF work great with them.. the 1DXmk2 sadly just lay on the seat next to me on the last trip...Switching between t DSLR vs Mirrorless just is too complicated for the brain... I do find that the mirrorless can sometimes "help too much" and focus on something it should not, we now spend a lot of time on single dot to start with and then see if the Eye AF will find the animal ( as you said) ... Leopards are a challenge, as are very fast birds like Bee eaters... The eye AF square goes with the bee eater taking off in the EVF , but the picture is often not sharp... could be the E series glass.. have not tried with R Glass. Do you also not wish that the single point could be smaller, like on the Cameras like the 1dx2? Hopefully, something that can be addressed with a firmware update if enough people pass the feedback on to Canon. Thanks for a great channel, I really enjoy it
Erwin, I totally agree - it would be great if they could halve the size of the single focus point. I can't wait to see how eye-tracking auto focus develops for wildlife photography specifically. If only they could receive all our in-the-field efforts in real time and make constant adjustments and upgrades - then leopards, wildebeest and also elephants would be much easier to focus on 😉
@@TheSafariExpert Just happened to be glancing at this and saw the comment about the single-point size. I have the R5 and there are two single-point sizes, one regular and another about half that. Is that not an option on the R6? I've used the R6 only briefly and never used single-point at all but I had assumed that the focus point options were the same on both cameras
Wow its an amazing camera.. i love it.. i love wildlife photography..i need to buy one camera.. I don't have money now to buy a camera.. but definitely buy it in future😀
Great video with lots of useful information. I would be interested in your views regarding why the R6 may be a better choice than the D850? The R5 looks like a great camera but is pricey and I find the ergonomics of Sony too small for my hands. I have a trip to the Okavango Delta in August, though most of my photography will be UK based. The reason for the question is that I have a D850 on order that I could easily switch to the R6. Thanks for any thoughts. I will be watching your Botswana series over the weekend.
Hi David. The D850 is an amazing camera and worth keeping if you stay with Nikon and are happy not to go mirror-less just yet, but if you’re ready to embrace the new technology, which everyone will have to do at some stage, the R6 is a better option than the Nikon option in that price-class. Enjoy the Botswana Series and the Delta later this year! 🤩
By the end of 2023, R6 (mark 1) and R7 is similar priced. Could you please share your comments on which is better for wildlife and landscape photography. Note : not interested in videos.
The R6 will always be better in low light, and hense, it would be my choice for both landscape and wildlife photography. Having said that, the R7’s crop factor of 1.6 is helpful if 1) you photograph a lot of birds and 2) if you photograph in places where you can’t get close to the animals. I have been using an R6 with a 100-500mm RF lens now for a year and a half and I love it! I will, however, be using an R7 for two weeks later this month and will do a full review video on my channel 👍🏻
Great Review ,100% agree with you , animals i think is primarily, birds, cats and dogs , my experince with R5 after the firmware upgrade to 1.5 , the animal eye tracking got worse, i could not accuratly get eye detect on a recent visit to game fame , but not for birds . Vasili
I have R6 and firmware 1.5.0 and no problems with its ability to focus on even small birds' eyes. Not always do I get focus. Depends upon kind of bird and how much contrast. Better on sunny days than cloudy, rainy winter days. Have shot 15,000 birds by now. To succeed one have to setup the camera properly. In particular the AF settings and the back button settings. I use C1 for still and C2 for birds in flight. Only difference between my C1 and C2 is C1 is 1/500 while C2 has 1/2000 as min shutter speed. Both have auto ISO. It took me several hours the first time I customized the settings of my R6. Found lots of inspiration on other RU-vid. I came from the 80D and the R6 offer so many more possibilities for customization. The time spend customizing was worth it. Now I more and less just use the view finder and press the shutter.

sadly it seems they have discontinued the R6 and proceeded only with the R6 MKII. Has anyone here tried the Mark2? If you have, would you say it is better than the original or is it worthwhile to seek out a second hand R6?
Hello. Great video and excellent information. I like to shoot birds in flight. Does the R6 have a blackout free evf or is there a lag between shots? Thanks.
Thanks Bill. With my Display Performance set to "smooth" and Image Review switched off, I don't experience any blackout in either mechanical or electronic shutter modes.
Excellent review. Often wildlife photographers cropped their picture to recompose or to get the extra reach. I would I love to listen your experience and example about it
I'm really torn between this camera, the r7 and the upcoming r8. I use a sigma 150 to 600. I'm worried with the r6 that I won't be able to capture small wildlife that are further away. Maybe the r7 would be better as it has more zoom already
I LOVE my R6. The image quality is excellent and it never gives me any issues (like overheating or freezing, like many R5-users experience). I also like the smaller file sizes. There is not very much room for cropping, but in using a 100-500mm lens, it’s not a big deal to me. I can highly recomment the R6 🤩👍🏻
Good video, though I kept my 5D4, it has 30mp, copes with focusing 90% of the time and I frequently am using 2 cameras at a time. I bought the R6 for the eye focusing, flip screen for ground shots, and the ability to focus continually in video. Nice images, though makes me a little jealous, I doubt I could afford a safari holiday!
I also purchased the R6 in 2021. It was working Great for awhile but here lately it's Not. I mostly do wildlife & outdoor photography. I've gone twice now to an area where there is a short eared owl & hawks I photographed both & both came out terrible. Yesterday the owl landed for awhile & those pix are not much better. Not sure what's going on 😔 Any help would be Great. What are your settings?
Thanks for the video. Have you covered image handling from shoots where you come back with say 2,000 images from one day? How do you work with this in the field? Secondly has the camera frozen on you ever? I had this happen when I turned the camera vertically mid shoot. I took the battery out and put it back in. It wasn’t a good feeling! Thank you
Thanks for a terrific video! Still, trying to decide between the R5 and R6. I’m thinking that the 20 megapixel might be too small for birds-in-flight (?)
I have the R6 and I would say if you can afford the R5 get that. The R6 is still brilliant but I do find sometimes I wish I could crop in more than what the R6 can do, a work around is to use something like Gigapixel AI and then crop it which gives very good results, but if you can afford the R5 get it
I have the R6 but have been wondering about getting an R5 as well so borrowed one from Canon for a couple of days to see if the larger file size helps with cropping. The side by side comparison photos I took has not convinced me the buy an R5. For example I took a photo that included a road sign and cropped both camera files to show just the sign, the R6 file was visibly better.
@@TheSafariExpert And will I be able to download your Digital Photography for Beginners with DSLR cameras tutorials, (from udemy), for future reference?
@@muleyg, no, you can’t download them, but you have lifetime access to it if you stream it. In other words, as long as you have signal, you can watch it.
Kianoush, that’s a tough one to answer. Obviously the top-of-the-range Canon and Nikon models are amazing for wildlife photography, but up to now, the Nikon D850 has been my personal favourite.
@@TheSafariExpert I did not think you would answer. Because most of the time they do not answer and this is a special indicator of you. Thank you for your honest answer 🙌
@@TheSafariExpert Yes Sir, just like a built in hard drive in computers. With that we don't have to worry about the different types of cards we have to change. The recent models which have the dual memory card slots are designed to use a CF express and SD card on the same body. I may sound over-ambitious, if users feel they do not have the 'flexibility' of changing memory cards of their desired capacity, a slot for memory cards shall be provided in addition to the built in hard drive ( something like 250gb or 300gb memory).

Ek is bly dat jy baie goed verduidelik en ek oorweeg dat ek gaan hierdie jaar vir Canon R koop. Ek het jou subtitlels gelees dat jy het genoem dat Automaties op wilddiere neem is beste opsie. So moet ek Manuals los. Net doodseker maak
Hi Marius. Ek’s bly jy oorweeg dit om die R6 te koop. Bedoel jy Automatiese fokus of Automatiese Modus? As dit by fokus kom, is automaties defnitief beter as manual, maar as dit by die ‘Mode’ kom, verkies ek Aperture Priority bo Automatic en Manual.
No chance I am going to afford to replace my camera any time soon, but I really enjoyed the video. You really have such a simple and engaging way of discussing the more technical aspects of photography.
Can't think of a single reason? - here's one, and the only reason I need. I'd prefer not to spend a fortune on a longer faster lens than I would need if I had some capacity to *crop*. Putting a telephoto lens on a 20MP FF camera is simply ridiculous.
That’s a good reason, especially if your photogtraphing animals that are shy or typically far from you. Here in the Lowveld of South Africa, where we photography animals right next to the vehicle, I hardly ever have to crop even when I use my 100-400mm lens on the R6.
Too heavy lenses to travel with. These lenses have to go with the pack into the bulk of the airplane … unless you travel business class . And I would not advice you to let them stored there … the way the cheap labour bulk storage guys handle the luggage …. is not a present for your lenses . That is why I switched to m43 ….. and will not return ….. Canikon too heavy for the few pics that I will put on big print.
I’d say the stupid side hinged, flippy flappy, obtrusive, take forever selfie screen is the reason I would not get one. Canon…. You need to offer us a choice because most of us photographers hate them.
@@TheSafariExpert The R6 was my first FF camera... and now I know I do not like FF. The AF when it works is good, but it loses focus for no apparent reason. The 20MP sensor. And let us not forget the rolling shutter when using the electronic shutter. I could have (and should have) bought two 90Ds and saved money.
Clickbait title..... if you are not presenting info you advertise , then we assume everything you say is false. There are tons of videos praising the R6 ( and rightfully so ), but if you have to rely on bait and switch to get viewers, then you are not helping the discerning potential buyer.
