Airline job used to be rewarding during the 70's to 90's, because of the pay differential; when compared to ground job. From year 2000 onwards; ground pay scale caught up with flying crew's pay. So it didn't look so lucrative anymore.

that's what I had heard from senior crew members as well! they had mentioned how flying was a lot more lucrative way back when

If you live in a country with good salary, I do not see many reasons to become a flight attendant because you could just stay in your home-country and find a job for life.

I love what you said about flying. I work for a US based carrier in Singapore as a ground agent. I realized my office has many ex SIA cabin crew and they did say this: TIRED. They stopped as they say like you have no life at all and your sleep timings is a jumbled mess.

The job would be difficult. Putting up with often rude passengers as well. The jet lag and waiting on standby would be horrible. As a passenger it takes me 2 weeks to recover from a trip from SIN to AU… However, I flew as a passenger SIN to MEL on a red eye flight which was horrible. There was only one meal service . I Hope things have CHANGED!

you’re so right RE: the downsides of flying. sorry to hear about your experience by the way. it’s surprising to me bcs there were always two meal services to MEL when I was still flying. surviving a 7-hour flight with only 1 meal must have been a challenge for sure!

Flying is just an exposure. Most will not fly more than 5 years. There are tangible gain and untangible gains and one wlll learn social skills/communication skills. Those who love it then continue to do what you love, it applies to all jobs. Everybody goals and dreams are different.

I totally disagree with you. I worked for Cathay Pacific and I love every minute of it. Many of us join at 20 and worked till we retired. As retirees , we still meet up as we have formed strong friendships. Some even went to join united airline as there is no retirement age there. Many of the things you mention are just a matter of prospective . Maybe your character is just not suited for the job. The airline have open the world to us and experiences that are so amazing . On top of that, all our airlines benefits remain even after retiring. It has allowed me to show my family , my kids the world. If I could , I would do it all over again and not change a thing.

Every career has its pros & cons, whether Ground or Mid-Air. Enjoy flying while you can, think of the nite stops, shopping, eating & sightseeing. Also be Proud of the Singapore Girl Image, we're a Great Way to Fly. I was proud to be a SG in the mid '85. Those days flying was good. Europe layovers were great. Plenty of rest days & short flts in between sectors. We had more advantage than what the current SQ Crew are facing right now. Mostly direct long haul flts.

I will tell you how the life of a “crew” is not all that different from a corporate slave point by point as per the video: 1. You are exchanging time for money- You are doing that everywhere. And nowadays it’s actually worse in corporate culture. You have a time to check in but no time to check out depending on your targets, deadline or work pressure. You end up giving a lot of your time to build someone else’s company in exchange of a salary with no perks such as free flight for yourself and your family and restaurant discounts like given by Emirates Airlines. 2. You have little to no control over your life - That’s again worse in normal corporate jobs. First of all it’s 9-6 normally or more.. not including the commute time to and from your work place.. As a corporate employee I only get 2 hours for myself every day and only 2 days to rest, clean, shop and prepare for Monday again. We have to apply for annual leaves as well which may or may not get approved by the company. Cabin Crew has an off after a short flight and 2-3 days off after every long flight.. Tired from a flight? Sure you can sleep for 20 hours straight and would still get time to socialise. With a corporate job.. we can barely can fit a good sleep in our schedule. 3. Long work hours and unhealthy lifestyle - Only being able to get 2-3 hours per day for yourself and to do everything in that in corporate life seems less of a work? Atleast after working long hours Cabin Crews get long enough rest days where they can plan their daily chores and socialise with their friends. Breathing in Closed tube? As a corporate employee we have to sit on one chair and work on the computer whole day while sitting in an ac room full of people as well. I have developed neck pain issues because of sitting for prolonged hours because I cannot keep taking breaks in between. We eat and get back on that chair every day.. talk about frozen necks and shoulders here. 4. Jet legged -So you are saying you wanna travel the world without being jet legged? How do we do that? I feel Jet legging only works when you have to adapt to another country’s time zone suddenly and start to work 9-6 immediately. As soon as Cabin Crew reach their hotels they go to sleep for a good number of hours.. they still function as per their own schedule and not the country’s time zone. You are saying sometimes you have to wake up at 3 in the morning for your flight but why is it difficult? When you get whole day to sleep. A person can easily plan their sleeping schedule as per their flight to feel rested enough to operate on board. I see a lot of cabin crews complaining about mood swings for not getting enough sleep. That’s because you are not sleeping when you are required to sleep and if you are always feeling tired while doing any job you need to eat healthy, drink plenty of water and check your nutrients level. If you dont keep these things in check then you are going to feel that in every job. 5. Forging meaningful relationships- This one is my favourite because cabin crew friendships can last really long. You dont have to be friends with every other crew you work with on board. Sometimes you can click with someone instantly and meet them on your off days like corporate world… we meet our friends on weekends. I know so many crews who are best friends and plan vacations together and swap flights to work with each other. Biggest perk: IF YOU MEET A TOXIC COLLEAGUE THEN YOU DONT HAVE TO SEE THEM AGAIN AFTER THAT PARTICULAR FLIGHT and additional perk: IF YOU REALLY CLICK WITH SOMEONE THEN YOU CAN KEEP THEM IN YOUR LIFE FOREVER AND PLAN A LOT OF THINGS TOGETHER. All I wanna say to the people trying to become cabin crew is that dont get discouraged at all. If you actually compare a crew life to 95% of the people you will see how blessed you are to see the world and meet so many people and experience new things every day. All these negative points are there in normal jobs as well except that in normal jobs you will be stuck in a cubicle surrounded by walls and working like a donkey to grow someone else’s company in exchange for a salary and will only live for weekends and holidays once a year.

I believe: if the standby is 2 days, after the 1st 24hrs, i.e. 0000-2359, the next day will starts from 0600-2359 instead of 0000-2359. Also the standby call up can also be those super rush ones, that reports direct to aircraft. Max working hours is 19 hour operation legally ULR flights but come with 2-4hrs bunk rest period. The hourly rates for ULR flights will have a multiplying factor, plus the layover time will be longer, although there maybe standby duties at layover stations too.

I flew JFK-SIN in May and with severe head winds/turbulence over India & Pakistan, wheels up to wheels down was 19 hours and 37 minutes. I took the same flight in November and it was 18 hours and 24 minutes. I ended up in Phuket and Bangkok and got extremely sick/ill with respiratory and sinus infections. I’m almost wondering if it was the flight was a contributor. Taking the same flight in May again.

So true. Airlines offer a dream and there will always be young women and men who will work for peanuts to travel the world. The damage it does to your physical health, hands/back is under reported. Sadly, airlines will never pay FA a high salary because there is a lot of labor to select from. Pilots is a different case.

The title of video should be worded more positive. Most jobs have all these issues. You get paid for your time. You have to fit your life around your schedule. But nurses at most 10.5 hours for the longest hours night shift (of course if that day duty nothing happen; it's another story if somebody collapse and having emergency near the end of the shift until you finish the whole scenario only you are allow to call it a day). At least they have rest days (usually like 2 rest days after 3 night shift days) in between night shifts. Dr. need to be on-call but they have sleeping room to rest while medical laboratory technologists who work in hospitals usually get the risk of getting cancer after working 10 years (especially those working in Histopathology lab which always handling dangerous toxic chemical such as formalin) and I could see most of the hospital lab staffs with yellowish eye sclera which might be symptom of overworking too since they have this thing call 24 hours on-call (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), followed by 6 hours rest hours, and then back in post-call working from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and then after 11 hours back to the same 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work or as what the supervisor has scheduled. Well, the working hours that I described as above might differ from hospital to hospital though.
