@@ElliottDelp hit a deer with any round in the shoulder and there will be carnage to said shoulder. Shot placement is key. The fact that a 30 caliber bullet is being considered as too much for a whitetail deer is interesting. 30-30 is the most common deer round of all time and they have a very similar wound channel (depending on bullet) to that of a 308. In the ozarks most people use 45-70s to deer hunt because of brush. Seen many deer killed with many different rifles. 308 is my preferred whitetail round by far

I hope I didn’t offend you with my reasoning for preferring the AR10 platform, but let me also add that in My home state 5.56mm is not an approved round for hunting medium to large game thus making a smaller caliber less useful than the AR10 platform which does allow for larger calibers. Please allow me to respectfully request that any further debate on this matter not involve pen size since you are obviously out of your league and I refuse to have a battle wits and intellect with an unarmed individual. I wasn’t thinking relative to the 308Win. Rather the 6.8 vs the 6.5. In the same barrel length the 6.8SPC is typically only marginally better than a 6.5G. Saw this review on my TV, and had to come on line to comment. I have an Armalite AR-10-T that's probably older than this young man (kid). Got mine before Armalite put SS barrels on them. I watched his vid twice before it sunk in. The title is wrong, but the point is well made. I converted my 10-T to a SASS configuration; cut and threaded the barrel, adjustable gas block, new Armalite handguards, PRS Stock. Kids right, it's heavy, but it puts eight, 168 grain Nosler CC's in 5/8 of an inch with a load of RL-15. Some time later (years) , I got tuned in to the 6.5 Grendel. Pulled a 16 inch factory out of a Bushmaster AR-15, and put a heavy SS, 18 inch barrel from Atheris Barrel Co, in it. The rifles have identical features, including the PRS stock. The AR-10 SASS is around 15 pounds, the AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel weighs less than 10. The 18 inch Grendel barrel is no light weight, as I shoot lots of rounds on a range day. Both weights include the optic. By the way, the Grendel put six 123 grain, Midway seconds into .699 at 100. Four of the six were in a .460 cluster. I'd much rather hump the AR-15, than the AR-10. As for 308 vs 6.5, it depends on what you want to do with it. It's SASS vs SPR. Deer will go down with both, but I bet they go down more soundly with the right 30 caliber bullet. However, IMHO, there isn't a better caliber for an AR-15 than 6.5 Grendel, especially if you reload. Just think about what you're naming your Vids, Kid. Try, "Performance vs Weight."

I dunno dude, a 20-22” Grendel shoots a 120gr at about 2400-2500ft/s. A 16” .308 will shoot a 175gr at the same velocities. Both rifles will likely still weigh the same, but the .308 will have more muzzle energy in a shorter package. At this point, your only trade off is recoil vs overall length.

I hunt suppressed here in Texas , I can get a lot more shots off with the 300 blk 220 gr subs (Hornady subx reloads )than I can both the other rifles . But I’ll admit for the hog side of hunting the velocity of the 308 in a quality hunting round (amax reload or controlled kaos) really drops the hogs . So for me I kinda lean on that more , predator hunting I typically pack the 223/556 flat(solid copper projectiles hyper velocities)shooting out too 400-500 yards not the best suppression but not horrible either . I feel either of these rifles do what I need , mostly because I reload my own ammunition for the type of hunting I’m doing . Hope y’all have a safe year of hunting and shooting

I have quickly and humanely harvested them, yes, but never have I seen a .308 Win completely destroy a deer, even with soft points and the infamous exploding Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips in deer of all sizes. It's not even a magnum or long action cartridge. It's actually less powerful than a 30-06, same projectile, slightly less velocity and energy. Bullet selection and shot placement are way more important factors in the deer woods imo. A good wound channel with an exit is what you want to make good blood trails if not dumping the animal drt (dead right there). As they say tho, to each their own! I purchased a 300 AAC BO for hunting because it's illegal to hunt white tail with less than a .24 caliber in WV and considered converting it over to 6.5 Grendel to hunt with for a few reasons. The 300 BO doesn't shoot flat like the Grendel or 308 Winchester and works on the AR 15 platform. You are correct in your statement the 6.5 Grendel and the 308 ballistics are almost identical the exception being muzzle velocity. The 308 has a higher muzzle velocity than the 6.5 Grendel, however at 600 yards the Grendel will have a higher fps than the 308 due to bullet weight. I chose against the 6.5 Grendel due to one reason, ammunition availability. Which caliber is more popular, 6.5 Grendel or 308 Win? An AR 10 chambered in 308 Win can shoot 7.62/51 NATO as well. The AR 15 isn't superior, in your video it's lighter and less expensive. To sum this up I have both an AR 15 300 AAC BO for home defense and a AR 10 308 Win to hit someone faster than me from one mountain top to the other or white tail deer whichever comes first.

@@ElliottDelp besides that it was good. I have killed several deer with my AR 10 but I prefer my lighter bolt actions. The AR 10 is heavy, especialy of you're stalk hunting and not sitting in a shooting house. I prefer 7mm-08 for whitetails but wouldn't be against try the grendel.

@@ElliottDelp I think anything bigger than a 243 and shot square in the shoulder will usually lead to the exit would shoulder getting tore up pretty good. Ideally you want to shoot just behind the shoulder to save the meat but even with the 308 they occasionally run 50yds. Anything that penetrates all the way through will usually tear up the opposite shoulder. I'll take that over under penetrating rounds that don't leave a blood trail.

He's young and is trying and loves guns, so I'll cut him some slack. If you hunt deer or hogs, 5.56 AR-15 is plenty. If you live out West and hunt Elk, the AR10 is better. However, I like both but will use a lighter bolt gun for elk hunting. If you only have or want one gun, then I could argue it should be an AR, for when the SHTF or home defense, etc. etc. Also, some of the newer AR 10s are very light.

My Gen 2 PSA 308 has become my favorite deer rifle. I have the 12.5" Grendel and have used both, the 308 decisively smashes deer, the Grendel requires solid shot placement but does the job. I have to strongly disagree with your comment saying that the Ar-15 is better in so many more uses than the Ar-10. That’s simply false. A rifle should be built by the owner for an intended use or uses. A 10 can be used for mid to long range targets and just as easily be made for cqb- mid range. (Pistol or sbr). The 7.62x51 is a very powerful cartridge that retains a ton of kinetic energy at distance as well as low recoil similar to 5.56. You made a good argument but it’s very compartmentalized to certain applications. I’ve seen people run 10s for 3 gun and smoke people with 15s. The 10 is just as modular as the 15 and can be built for a wide range or purposes, maybe ever wider than the 15 given its long range capabilities.
@ElliottDelp

Agreed but I still prefer my ar15. I personally have never been in a situation that the 15 couldnt do the job of the 10 and I think for the vast majority of people they won’t either. Young man..I give you full props for putting yourself and your thoughts out here for all the world to criticize, its noble. Now if your going to get on here and say don't hunt with an AR10 you should have your facts more organized and your information arranged in a manner that is less confusing to the viewer. You are all over the place with what you are trying to say. I agree a 6.5 Grendel is an excellent hunting round. Lite platform with hard hitting ballistic properties in an ar15. However, it took you forever to get that point out there. I have both .308 and 6.5 Grendel, I hunt with both. Yep the ar10 is a heavyweight, thats no reason to mark it off as don't use for hunting. The situation will dictate its uses. A rifle is a tool..for a specific job, just like a hammer. You wouldn't use a framing hammer for cabinet work. Hunting from a stand with an ar10...doable.....hunting big horn sheep in the Rockies...not the best idea....but doable... I hunt with an M1A in all kinds of conditions and situations. Its a man's rifle...and when you squeeze the trigger...it means business. Point here is this...don't condemn the tool...use the right tool for the job. Keep up the good work.

Plus the real knock down power of the 308 against the 223 . 223 would not do the job that I expect from my 308 . I have carried my lr-308 for many miles hunting with no problems .

I've never hunted before. So I went with the Diamondback AR10 18" 308 for the "forgiveness" in shot placement. 223 requires good shot placement or several followup shot, and that is if the target does run off to die. 308 will drop them in their spot. I'd rather miss some meat/pelt than miss the whole animal. That's how I'm approaching it.

Son, I applaud you for trying to get into the gun tube field. You did an excellent job of making your case. I would highly disagree with you even though I do love the 65 Grendel. It’s really like comparing apples to oranges. AR 15s aren’t necessarily meant for hunting although I use them for that in many others do as well. It’s kind of a do it all rifle I would not use a 65 Grendel or any AR 10 for home Defense. While they could be you have to think of things like penetration, etc. etc. there’s better options. Availability of ammo is not even close. You can find 308 anywhere on earth and that is not in the case for 65 grendel which, in my opinion didn’t seem to catch the traction, it was hoping to. The AR gives you the ability to hunt almost any animal on this planet to longer ranges. No deer is demolished by a 308. I have personally seen hogs killed with a 308 and 65 Grendel and they don’t hit even close to the same. Also if a gun weighs too much in my opinion and I’m reaching my 50s just work out more. I want to validate all of your hard work and your venture into putting yourself out there at the end of the day. These are all subjective opinions so really the only ones who’s matters is your own. I would venture to guess most people looking at AR 10 already own 15. I am glad you brought diamond back up because that is a great brand. It’s super reliable. I have the diamondback DMB it runs like a train. Great budget brand.

.223 isn't legal for big game in Colorado - you have to be shooting at least a .24 caliber round. There are minimums for bullet weight and ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards as well. I hate the weight and size when I'm walking around for sure, but AR-10 is an elk getter, and that's what I hunt. I hunt antelope and deer as well, and take headshots so I don't lose meat (and so I don't have to deal with the soupy mess when field dressing)

Like many of the other people have commented on here already is WHY turn down the rifle saying it destroys the animal, if your a true gun nut look into different types of bullets for the type of animal. I live in Texas where I have shot and killed plenty of hogs with my 223 with well placed nosler bullets. I have also hunted deer with my 223. I have also hunted whitetails, muledeer, hogs, antelope, nilgaii, exoctics, and aoudads all with my nemo omen in 300 winmag but no two animals use the same type of bullet some I would prefer a ballistic tip and some I would rather have an open tip match round. The 243 is also a great round that benefits from good bullet selection and yes many of these animal I have named have been taken with this round as well. But many of these animals have also been taken with my ar15s in different calibers as well bullet selection plays a big role. So before knocking the ar10 off because it causes too much damage try different bullets, if its too heavy then i suggest sitting in a blind and prop it on a tripod.

The reason I bought an AR-10? My dad and my older brother used 7mm mags for hunting. Both mule deer, and elk. My dad always told me the .308 can effectively kill ANY animal on this continent. I had a .308 Savage model 99e, I made several one shot kills with open sights in excess of 400 yd. My dad then gave me his winchester model 88 .308. UNBELIEVABLE RIFLE, and it actually had a scope! MUCH MORE successful hunting! Later on I bought a 7mm mag. Stainless barrel, composite stock, very light, no recoil pad. I still have the model 88, have no interest in owning another 7mm mag. THAT'S WHY I bought the AR-10. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

It's recommended to never shoot a whitetail with less than 1000 ft/lbs of energy on your bullet. For a 223/5.56, even heavier grains like 75g or 77g, that's only about 100-150 yds to safely kill an adult deer. For elk, it's 1500 ft/lbs of energy. No way I'd ever take a damn AR15 deer hunting. You're just too limited on range. In contrast, a 168g 308 (kind of a standard hunting load) has over 1000 ft/lbs of energy at 600 yds. You can also safely kill an elk at 400 yds. There's a reason why the 223 was never traditionally used by deer hunters in N America and theres a reason why the 308 is one of the most popular medium sized gamer calibers there is.

If you have to pick one ar10 hands down wins in all categories except weight. I hunt large game, the smallest deer I have shot in last 15 years weighed over 200# and I also have elk on my ranch so I carry heavier calibers.
