Which is why the MC (Medical Certificate) is rampantly abused in Malaysia. It's so bad that it's actually a "culture".

I work in the engineering sector in Penang. I still remember my first job and how crappy it was. If you came in early to work, it didn't count towards overtime. And apparently overtime was mandatory. I was legit miserable every day especially since most Malaysians drive their vehicles to work, I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning every day, drive for 30 mins to beat the traffic jams because I lived quite far from work. Public transport isn't as useful since the buses will too be stuck in a jam. I remember seeing an employee be outright furious throwing a tantrum in the office from stress and overwork and feeling like he was treated unfairly. Twice. I'm happier at my current job, but it has problems too. You can't apply for long holidays. You have to plan your holidays in a group, so that there's always someone in the office. You can't take all your annual leaves too all at once. The worst part is people will still tell you "this is how life is" and expect you to suck it up. Malaysia is very far behind when it comes to things like human psychology or even things like life coaching. We're unhealthy because we sit down so often and we're exhausted from a day's work that exercise is of very little concern. It's even more difficult for certain races depending on what you want to do. You're non-Chinese? Well good luck cause you're gonna have to learn the mandarin since nearly everyone in the software industry speaks it inside the office and their customers are from China. A lot of Chinese employees do forget sometimes that when they're in a group to speak in a language everyone understands

Sorry to hear about your subpar experience working in penang, i work in penang in engineering RnD, but i dont have the same OT problem and leave which the hours are flexible and leave can be taken as long as it is informed ahead of time. So i believe it really depend on companies, i would say the situation is less likely to happen if it is a MNC company.

Bro, my colleague literally scolded me for using my own annual leave. And taking mc when i’m really sick. I dont mind if they wanna work overtime just to show everyone that they do well, but lets not involve others whom have their own world outside the office, just because you dont have one. They refer me as “sampah” as in RUBBISH in malay.

As a Malaysian employee, it literally feels like death everyday.

could you clarify why it feels like death everyday? I am curious because I am a Malaysian citizen but grew up and lived most my life in the U.s. and considering traveling back there or philippines

@@infinitytcg7128 Hi! My perspective has definitely changed since the past year, but may I know whether you're coming back here to be employed or to run your own business? In my own working experience as an employee back then, you will literally sell your soul when you sign any employment agreement (not all companies ya, a few employers will treat you right). What I mean by this is, getting disturbed with work on your leave, the subtle expectation to work during the weekends, no time for family (even in emergencies), low salary + increment, lack of benefits and usually lack of up-skilling and training. Despite all these, you're still expected to provide top-notch quality work at ALL times. No such thing as getting empathy for making mistakes as a human being. The drive to and from work are getting crazy (traffic jams are getting worse in 2022. avg. 1-2 hours drive for most Malaysians unless you're rich enough to buy / rent in KL centre and can walk / use public transport to go work.) Right now I'm crafting my own journey and building my own business, so even if I work 70-80 hours a week, I can still manage my own time to cater to my family when needed. At least it doesn't feel like death anymore, but it feels like chasing my life purpose now. If you have Instagram, follow @malaysianpaygap. You can see a lot of your normal average Malaysians sharing their work experiences and also their income / benefits etc, so maybe perhaps you'll get a better idea of how it is right now. Despite the rough employment landscape right now, I do still believe that you can craft the best experience for yourself in Malaysia. I have seen people with 5-figures income, but they're not happy with life. I have seen people with less than RM2,000 but they are able to be content with what they have, and they get rezeki in other aspects such as good health, healthy relationships, no debts, etc. Gotta think smart about not getting too tied down to the rat race and you'll probably get a more fulfilling life. :)

During my time work at Malaysia only can take 1 hour lunch break then work start 9 - 6.30 pm. Saturday have to 9-1 pm. Later they you have to work smart and multitask. I will think in myself you idiots im not robot but human. Thats why you idiots cant work without computer or even without phone. No real interaction between employee and employer. Just focused on performance. Now im wondering what's the situation after covid. I feel great after covid happened because many realized life is mot only about work money.

"not allowed to leave before the boss/superior after end shift"?? i thought that's only in Japan. Not here. I've worked in 7 companies so far in Malaysia and all different industries, never have I experience such thing?? Bnyk mcm sound tak betul je video nie. Ke sengaja taknak org kerja kat negara nie supaya ekonomi kita tak membangun. Sus.... (terlebih paranoid pulak aku)

it's true. Especially for Malaysian Chinese bosses. From my experience the culture is very similar between Japanese and Chinese. The majority of cases, the bosses won't actually say it directly, but as they see you going home earlier, they will start to have a negative opinion of you, and will show it indirectly. Especially in SME, depending on what position you hold.
