This is actually why i love to rearrange my book shelves every few months, cause i can just sit there in the middle of my books and be reminded of everything i felt while reading them ❤.

I once went on a bookstore crawl with a friend. We went to five bookstores, and I went home with 7 books. I also drank a lot of really great coffee that day and had a great time. Every time I look at those books, I don't just remember what happened in the books and how much I enjoyed them, but I also remember the day I got them and what a good time I had.

In college my friend and I used to get sloshed, pull a philosophy book off my shelf, flip to one page and read / discuss it while pacing back and forth in a tiny ass room. It was ridiculous and the best time. Usually something inaccessible like "Being and Time" or "Godel Escher Bach". I will never read those front to back, but they made for great discussion prompts.

Just passed an old collection of the Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. My first thought was that my boyfriend’s dad gave them to me. He said he read the series two times over: once when he was in college, and once when he had his first kid (my boyfriend’s older brother) and read them to him every night when he was a toddler, eventually reading through the entire series. He gave them to me because he doesn’t read much anymore which makes me a little sad, but I’m still really grateful for them. What memories they possess! Also a little part of me hopes I can read them with my future kids at bedtime too haha.

I love movies, books, and music, and I own a high amount of all. I own almost two hundred films. I don't even know how many books I own, and I have about 50 records. I love all three mediums. Movies are probably the most engaging. It blends so many different art forms together. Movies can have wonderful visuals, a stunning soundtrack, great story, good characters, beautiful costume design or architecture, etc. But I like that books and music take up eras in your life. I can pull a book out and think about the couple of weeks or month it took me to read and where I was and what I was doing when I read that book. Same with music, I can think about all the places I listened to that album or when I first heard it. Movies are brilliant, and I definitely enjoy rewatching them but they don't remind me of specific periods of time in my life like books and music do.

I walked past my bookshelf and honestly found more books that I had either never read or got part way through and never finished! It disappointed me to see. But. There is one book off my shelf and on my coffee table. It is The Little Prince. My friend got it for me and it reminds me of his kindness. It was also a favorite of Mr. Rogers. I haven’t gotten too far in it, maybe page 30. It has a quote in it that says “what is essential is invisible to the eye”. Id like to remind myself about it more often so, I hope to read it so that I might remember it more. Can’t cook with what’s not in the kitchen after all!

@@timdemoss Portuguese (Brazilian) is my first language, it can be actually pretty difficult to learn. But if you start there (with children's book) I think you can catch pretty easy, if you already learned some other language

i walked past and saw never let me go by kazuo ishiguro and remembered that this institution in the book raises kids to harvest their organs and i wrote a paper on it and then accidentally left my own “this is crazy they’re crazy no cap” comments on the last page for my honors professor to see and write “what.” also it’s such a sad book now i want to read it again thanks tim

I highlight and annotate like a madman, so even if I read a book 10 years ago, I can pluck it from the shelf and revisit the passages and ideas I documented from that time. Sometimes it seems dated or embarrassing, but most of the time it supplements my never-ending Theory of Everything and is pretty enriching.

Most of my physical books I haven't read (thank you for the changed perspective), and when I look at them-my collection of George Orwell, Ernest Hemingway, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and history books (when the “What's your Roman Empire?” questions were being asked, I was ready with the "Byzantine. And did you know that a three-legged table was considered a thing of status?")-I remember having the realization that there's so much I want to know. I have Jordan Peterson's book recommendations saved in my notes, and I've been collecting them and others that pique my interest (The Barbie movie "The Princess and the Pauper" was based on a Mark Twain book, who knew! and only $3 at my bookstore!). I love this prospect of not needing to get and understand it all, but just admiring the work. I recently read "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" because I would make so many references about it in conversation, when I only knew it from the movie trailer-not the movie, not the book, just the trailer. It's short; I finished it in an hour and thought about it all day. Movies that stay with you are visually appealing; books just stay with you. I'm gonna give reading them another go. The first time was disheartening since they didn't give the dopamine rush smut romance does, and I didn't feel this compelling need to finish it now! Who needs sleep? I'm gonna try this way of reading-leisurely-because it's probably the only way I'm gonna read The Gulag Archipelago.

i had a beatles hyper fixation during the pandemic and i bought so many books related to them. i read half of one. now every time i glance at my bookshelf i’m reminded of that time where i genuinely was so immersed in their music and history so i have a lot of fond memories about that. also upsetting tho bc hyper fixations can be so fleeting and it makes me sad thinking about 2020-2022 me and how she’d react to the fact that i haven’t listened to their music in over a year 😭

mine is 'demons' by Dostoyevsky. I had a (years-long) 'nihilistic' & depressive era before finding my religion (again). I guess i stared a bit too long at the abyss, naively believing that i could safeguard myself against it. Having this book on my desk under my Quran is a continuous reminder of how dispensable and meaningless my life was before my religion. Physical proof that no philosophy of way of seeing life (& living it) nourishes me, except for islam.

Thanks so much for sharing. Haven't read that book but I totally get the sentiment of staring too long into the abyss. Lately I've tried to be careful of reading too many 'dark' or sad or existential books in a row, especially when they're beautifully written, because they can make me feel like maybe that's what the world is really like. I still like reading them because I want to know different people's perspectives and ways of explaining things, but I just try to remember they're not my religion. I do wonder sometimes if it's different reading philosophy as religious people (who often have a definitive text(s), like the Quran or Bible or Torah, etc) vs non-religious people (who don't). For me, personally, I've found reading philosophical works from all over the place helps me better understand my faith & religious text (I'm a Christian, so the Bible), both through their similarities and differences. Curious if you had any more thoughts on this with your faith. Although I know the RU-vid comments section might not be the optimal place for religious discourse :) Thanks again so much for sharing & I'm glad to have you around!

@@timdemoss The thing that changed it for me was focusing on having solid roots in my faith first, so that i won't easily be taken down by passing winds (and tornados, Nietzsche I'm side-eyeing you). Now that I studied the islamic principles on let's say sexuality, I can go and explore the works of Wilhelm Reich and Judith Butler. (which i think is absolutely necessary, especially to understand the current cultural conflicts) We have to go back to these old ideas (ex. Marxism) to understad where ideologies like identitarianism came from and what socio-cultural problem they tried to tackle. Philosphy and ancient texts don't necessarily undermine religion. Alyosha in 'The brothers Karamazov' has some deeply inspiring and ethereal discussions & internal monologues about the ecstasy of prayer, the freedom that faith brings, necessity of morality and guidelines etc. (It's comforting to know that Dostoyevsky TOO had a similar trajectory of finding his faith after his ambitious and idealistic ideologies) I'm currently reading The myth of Sissyphus by Camus where he tackles teh subject of suicide and absurdism. I use these texts to train my critical thinking, reasoning and analytical skills. By engaging in such activities I not only improve my cognitive capacities but also find the holes in my knowledge of my religion (which is the most important part). 'Oh i have trouble seeing the logical fallacy in this argument about x (free will and divine predestination, human disposition ...).' I go research it and resume the mental gymnastics. In what way have these subjects your relationship to your own faith ? I hope this wasn't a chaotic vent. My apologies for the grammar mistakes, this is not my first language.

I didn't even have to walk past my bookshelf to have those snapshots come back, it's insane what words can do. i remembered my copy of sofie's world and how i imagined the old man and sofie standing sitting infront of the curch and her little cove under the willow tree. i thought of "a cafe at the end of the world" (that the only person i have ever properly philosophized with and that i missed dearly got me) and how he wrote a poem into the front which by chance happened to be one of my favorite poems. i haven't read the book yet. i thought about the song of archilles and about the way i imagined him fighting, a screenshot in my brain like a baroque painting. and finally i thought about the copy of "the little prince" an old friend got me when we had a reconnect meeting in a city we both weren't from, i remembered sitting at a beautiful creek. playing with the water and the plants surrounding us and sharing a sketchbook where i drew my gorgeous view of my favorite trees and she drew me.

I usually tend to disagree when people argue that it is somehow good or beneficial to collect books just to have them in their libraries without ever reading most of them. A book is not a decoration and should not be an aesthetic that people use to feel smart or to show off to people. But I totally agree with your take and more importantly it is valid as long as you actually have read the book. Now that I think of it I also more often think about the books in my library that are at my eye level and really enjoy the reminder of the plot, where I was in life when I was reading it and how it made me feel.

Betsuma. It's a thick Japanese shoujo magazine my dad had found in our community's dumpster several years ago. It reminded me of when I referenced it to doodle in pen on a notepad, and that I haven't practiced drawing for a long time. Like a branch spreading out into smaller ones, that memory reminded me other things related, and those things too yet reminded me further of even more distant and unrelated things. Like how I took notes on the same notepad, or that there were other treasures my dad had found. Or how the said notepad was from my dad's previous job, and he left them for me to use.

Recently I was given the books Mum had bought. Some may be her University study books. Many are classics with a section of Rudyard Kipling. They remind me of my Mum and now I can explore their contents any time I like.

A western written by my grandpa! I think I have the only copy. I remember reading through it and recognizing a style so distinctly his that I could almost hear him narrating it. When he got that copy printed a crucial detail was left out towards the end, so he wrote it in the margins using pen. Seeing it made me want to spend more time with him. I also noticed the lack of fiction on my shelves. Apart from that book, The Catcher in the Rye was the only other fiction. I'm going off to college over this summer and I'm tempted to bring my books, not to reread but to serve as reminders of life lived! Also seriously this content is incredible. Short and effective, it just makes me want to read. 11/10

The perks of being a wallflower was one of the books i passed It certainly reminded me of Emma Watson (weird reminder since this is basically books > movies but whatever) It reminded me of Charlie’s best friend and my own And it reminded me of my friend who is abroad and was reading this book a couple weeks ago

@@timdemoss Just got into reading a book a month for this year, like a resolution. Psychocybernetics is really a big title for no reason. Its the original “get your mind right” book. Any book on the subject pulls from it. Very easy calm read, I enjoyed it.

The problem that I personally have regarding physical books is that I have a subscription to a service that lets me download a lot of books for only about 10 bucks a month. And I mean a *lot* of books. Just in the last month, I've added about 50 books to my library (although I've only read maybe 5 of them). I would absolutely *never* buy that many physical books in such a short time. I'm not in the greatest financial situation, but even if I was, I would still feel... guilty? I guess? Like, I don't need that many books. I don't have the space for them, I already have such a long list of books I haven't read yet, blah blah blah. I think that physical books are absolutely better than e-books, I really agree with you on this. I actually do want to build a physical library if I can- maybe once I move out, if I have the space for it. At the moment, though, digital access to all the reading material I can get my hands on is a priority for me.

@@timdemoss I couldn't recommend it enough, as accurate as the movie is to real life, the book is much more realistic and scientific in my opinion. It doesn't try to over explain the science behind it but still does a good job that the layman can understand what's happening.

i saw “the Martian” by Andy weir and it reminded me of how much I needed the humor that book provided to me amidst a loss unlike one I’d ever experienced before. and it reminded me of escaping into a world where someone else felt alone, but they found their way out, just as I could.

I walked past my bookshelf and saw my hardcover copy of The Martian Chronicles/Golden Apples of the Sun/The Illustrated Man. It's a book I've read 1.5 times but intend to keep it forever because 1. I LOVE the poetry inside 2. It's just a really pretty looking book, and 3. Because my dad got it for me one day on a whim, and it reminds me of him whenever I see it.

I just saw The Count of Monte Cristo on my bookshelf! I remembered 1. eating monte cristo sandwiches while discussing the book in book club earlier this year 2. that I still need to finish reading it haha oops and 3. my husband because it's his favorite book :)

totally agree that a book can immerse you in a completely different way. although (and I tried to walk this line pretty carefully here) they're just different art forms at the end of the day, with their own uses. it's why the thumbnail has an * on it :) movies have the visual aid that books can't get and books can tackle introspection way better, plus they can go on for a lot longer and still find an audience. thanks for watching!

What jumps to mind for me-without even looking at the shelf directly-are the Agatha Christie mysteries that I used to read voraciously as a teenager. What I am reminded of is the sheer enjoyment of diving into a story with all sorts of intrigue and twists & turns (especially “And Then There Were None”). The action point for me, when it comes, is to simply stop long enough to read a book for enjoyment again. A mystery would probably top the list-very likely a re-read of a Christie book I’ve long since forgotten the plot to-but anything else featuring a good story would work too. Thank you for the reminder! :)

I’m glad I grew up with that full shelf. I think I read most of our Agatha Christie books in high school and my first few summers back from college. They’re brilliant. Good reminder for me to order some used copies to build up the shelf
