Friends, death is a topic most of us try to avoid. So, why does Catholicism teach we should meditate regularly on our death?
On today’s episode of “The Word on Fire Show,” Brandon Vogt and I discuss the ancient Christian practice of memento mori (remember your death), and how Christ solves the four problems that death poses to each of us: identity, futility, loss, and the end of earthly joys.
A listener asks, what should Catholics think about near death experiences and stories?

Lord Jesus, as I contemplate my own mortality, I am reminded of the brevity of life on this earth. Help me to use the time I have been given wisely, to love and serve others as you did. May the awareness of my own impermanence inspire me to seek your grace, live in accordance with your teachings, and trust in your promise of eternal life. Amen.

How do you actively contemplate something?
@jesshallock5346
@jesshallock5346 8 месяцев назад
@thehermitage5668 I found your question actually kind of hard to answer because I had never thought about it before. To contemplate is basically “to look thoughtfully for a long time” so I suppose to actively contemplate would be to do so with grater intention. I think the first step is setting aside time and choosing a space for quiet thought (like going to adoration, sitting for a while after Mass, going for a walk, or just sitting in your living room). Then saying a prayer that all your thoughts and ideas are for God and from God and for the grace to recognize what is not (that’s why I find it easiest to contemplate in the presence of the blessed sacrament). Then I guess just sit and consider what it is you want to contemplate. Ask your questions, consider your questions and answers, most importantly listen. Writing down what comes to mind is really helpful. Contemplation is essentially using your intellect and spirituality together to consider whatever it is you want to contemplate. I guess you just think about it with God…I’m not sure if any of that makes sense, but I think that’s contemplating actively. It’s really simple and yet not, like lots of things.

He with ears, hear: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

Good morning and peace be with you, Bishop Barron. I just wanted to thank you for your ministry. I have just begun watching your videos and have been deeply blessed and encouraged and nourished from them. I was raised evangelical fundamentalist and was taught a good many falsehoods about Catholics. I am learning how wrong many of those falsehoods were, through your work and through fellowship with my Catholic brothers and sisters.

Those of us looking for a catholic view of death due to loss are all, I'm sure, deeply grateful for this. No therapy model or griefshare group seems to use tell us what we most want and need to hear, so the suffering is either avoided (postponed really) or deeper than it need be. You preach compassion. God bless you.

As Bishop Barron speaks of the soulful longing within each of us, we are reminded that death is 100% certain. Bishop reminds us that it is not morbid to think of death, but realistic to think of the soul as eternal and the body as temporary. The parallels to circle and a sphere as to living and after life are uplifting and logical. I will take that metaphor with me and thank and Bless you, Bishop Barron for all the comforting wisdom you impart to us....and to Brandon for all his insight and questioning.

Thanks to both of you for rich , and beautiful discussions. Hitting sixty four this coming October, where did that go? Well, it went beautifully I’ve been blessed with good health , love , and tons of laughter. My life has been incredibly blessed and peppered with all kinds of tragedies and sadness that life brings. Hoping it won’t be soon , but if my life here were to end I can say , wow , that was amazing. Amazing because of the love and laughter part , of course the love and how it sustained me. My mom had dementia in the last years of her life , and I my five siblings were gathered around her bed . What a gift she gave us that day. The dementia lifted and she was clear as can be. She called each one of us over separately and told us how much we meant to her. Her parting words were, “ love is all that matters in this life , it is what life is all about”. I’m looking forward to death , bring it on , who would want to live here forever… besides I need to see my husband , mom , dad and countless others. Peace and light …

I have often reflected on the subject of death. There was a time when I feared death. After the COVID and having seen & heard of the death of millions of people, I now have come to terms with the subject. (1 Corinthians 15:55-58). I contemplate on this text & wait in joyful hope for the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. Matt5:8 is very challenging but it is a good reason to work towards purifying ourselves by earnestly praying for the gift of grace from God. It is awesome to be a Catholic and I find hope in saying the Creed, I am especially inspired & comforted about the Resurrection of our bodies to life everlasting.

It gave me a fresh realization that my life is between me and God alone, and always has been. I just didn't know that until I grew old and experienced loss. Now, I may be okay with my own death. I think.

Thank you Bishop Barron and Brandon for sharing this discussion. These are consoling words and I especially appreciate the advice to pray the rosary daily and ask for the intercession of our holy mother at the hour of our death. We take for granted that we will always be able to pray and repent as we approach that final hour, but there may be a point where we can not pray. I’m also glad to hear that you have been invited to the Synod . This also is a great source of anxiety for Catholics who feel like they will be asked to choose between obedience to church authority and following the truth of the faith. Especially when we contemplate how we will answer at the hour of our death, this is a legitimate source of anxiety and to me the greatest injustice that can be laid at the feet of faithful Catholics to put one in opposition of the other. Bishop Barron, I promise to pray for you and the faithful voice that you bring to the Synod. Thanks again for your work.

#22:30 on Losing earthly joys Let's have a shout out for C.S.Lewis who used the dimensionality explanation in Mere Christianity, and even in the last book of the Narnia chronicles, where the children realize that the places they have loved on earth are just "Shadowlands" of a greater reality in heaven, and than none of them are really lost. Lewis also puts an hillarious twist on the story of the 8-yr old unable to comprehend the joy of the marital embrace: he asks whether one eats sweets during it, and is told 'no', so goes away believing that the marital embrace is just an occasion where you're not allowed to eat sweets.

I was not practicing my faith, I felt I could not be forgiven, and had let the Lord down. I asked the exact 4th question. I was desperately worried about dying. As an outdoor type of person , I was walking back to my car, thinking how I would miss the wind and the rain when I die. How can dying be better than this? Three words resonated in my soul, "I AM THERE". I knew it was Jesus, He is there waiting. Since then I have never missed Mass, I have become an Catholic RE teacher. My house is like a shrine😊 I thank Jesus all the time for bringing me back. Im not afraid to die, He is there.

I've been accused of being a fatalist because I speak of death not frequently, but in a way some find a bit too nonchalant. I could say I'm not afraid to die but that would be a lie. Everyone is afraid of death at some level, our survival instinct wires us for it. I do know this, what awaits us on the other side puts anything here to shame. The idea that you will miss anything about this place is off the mark. The peace is unlike anything that can be put into words, a calmness that surpasses our comprehension. I'll just leave it at that.

Old age will creep up on you. I have just turned 65. The approach and passing of this milestone has made me more aware of my mortality. It seriously does not seem all that long ago since I was young. Another thing that has brought my limited time left is the loss of both parents. Mum died just before my 63rd birthday and Dad died just after my 64th. Another thing is the recent news of the Pope's and your visits to Lisbon and Fatima. This brought memories of my visit to these two places in October 1991. It occurred to me that it was almost half my life so-far ago. [It was 31 years and 10 months ago, which is not far short of my age at the time, which was 33 years and 3 months].

Very interesting, as always! Thank you. Tonight I've listened to this 2x more. It is so rich...the secular viewpoints, the Biblical viewpoints (Hebrew & NT), those 4 points by McCullough, esp., the last 2: loss & earthly joys robbed. The point of these earthly things to view as "sacramentality" & transformed. The question asked @ "near death experiences"...some physicians have written on those, from patients & also, their own personal experiences. If people are reluctant to discuss their own, I think it in part is because in our culture, we do not want to be seen as not in touch w/reality &/or bordering on mental illness.

When we were growing up there was a language permeating our home...Roman Catholic language...scripture all through the house and everyone using it. I moved away at 18, periodic visits, and then back home at age 42. The language had changed. It had permeating esoteric language. Words that can be found and explained in Father Pacwa's book "Catholics and the New Age: How Good People are Being Drawn Into Jungian Psychology, the Enneagram, and the Age of Aquarius." -Sarah - Wife of John

Why you should ponder your own death! This subject was brought to my attention a fair while back, and if we truly believe and have faith in Jesus Christ one day for sure is that we will stand before him, and we will need all the graces and blessings that can assist us at the crossing over point of our souls! as you very clearly pointed out Bishop Barron, we ask this of Our Lady at the end of each Hail Mary prayer, "Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death" Amen

I love your videos! I have an idea for a talk: 'What's more important: the truth or peace?' Sometimes these thing can go together but sometimes it's seems like these things cannot exist together, in those circumstances, what wins: truth or peace?

When some people are dying, they experience what is called a "rally" This happened with my brother. It was very brief, but I will never forget it! Praise God for such brief, but amazing moments. Many doctors and nurses see this. I encourage people to pay attention to this. I believe it is miraculous.

What a great episode of WoF! I am a student of process philosophy/process theology and what Bishop Barron says at 18:16 is very much like Whitehead's idea of what he calls the consequent nature of God (which is united with the primoridal nature of God). In process theology, all the happens in the world is saved from annihilation and obscurity (or futility, as in this discussion) by being prehended by this consequent nature, taken up in all its fullness into the life of God where it enjoys an eternal being in a manner we cannot fathom in our current state of existence. From a process theology perspective, it is imporant, it matters, what we do with our lives. We are what we do and what we do, the free choices we make in life that define us, live eternally in God's being, which also means we live on in God. Again, as Bishop Barron discusses, in a mode unlike anything we can imagine in our current spatially and temporally extended mode. If I were to use Whiteheadian terms, I would say the more we willfully align ourselves with the initial subjective aims coming from God's primoridal nature (colloquially, the Goodness and Righteousness of God), the higher the satisfaction enjoyed in God's consequent nature by the superject of the society of occasions of experience defined by personal order that we essentially are. :D

I just want to go home and hope for a merciful judgement. I know He loves me,, but I also know I'm a sinner. I am afraid, but I trust Him. So far He has never let me down , despite the trials and tribulations of my 69 years. I'm so blessed by tthe gift of faith and look forward to being reunited with all those who I have loved and lost in the great Communion of the saints when I finally become who I was createdd to bè. Deo gratias

How do we prepare for death? I’d bring into the discussion the parable of the different workers in the vineyard. There are those who were hired and started work early in the morning, some later in the morning, some around noon, some around mid-afternoon, and yet some started work near the end of work day. Can we just set back and relax and start working around 4 or 5 PM of our lives?
