This video discusses the relatively unknown theologian Adolf Hoenecke and his multivolume systematic theology titled "Evangelical Lutheran Dogmatics." Hoenecke was the most significant thinker within the Wisconsin Synod (WELS) in the late 19th to early 20th century, and a proponent of Confessional Lutheranism.

You should take a look at the “Wauwatosa Gospel”. August Pieper was our late Pastors Professor of O.T. Theology also John Phillip Koehler.

I don't think you're understanding the reformed understanding of conversion correctly. Everything you stated about conversion from a Lutheran perspective could be said by the Reformed: that the call in conversion is the internal working of the Spirit to bring about salvation by faith. The Reformed would call that the "internal call" whereas the call that "goes throughout the world" is the "external call" (or "gospel call"), two simultaneous calls in one act. ex. Some hear the external call and not receive the internal call, some do. So we do not have a one dimensional understanding of the call, which is an oversimplification.

I see why you'd think that as my comments were rather brief here. I have explained some differences in more detail regarding the internal/external call, etc. on my podcast episode on that topic: www.patheos.com/blogs/justandsinner/the-call-vocatio/

What do you think of Wolfhart Pannenberg's Systematic theology? I was thinking of buying that one as my first because its more modern and thus, in theory, is the most up to date on the historical context of the NT, but you might have just dissuaded me.

Pannenberg is definitely not one I would recommend for a first systematic theology. A tough read for a number of reasons.

@@DrJordanBCooper OK, but is his theology generally good? Do you like his ideas and conclusions, or admire his thinking?

@@harleywykes4971 He's brilliant, and very significant, but I'm not in agreement with some of his fundamental conceptions regarding the nature of God.

+Harley Wykes -- I'd go for the gusto and read his trilogy just for the sheer heck of it despite agreeing with Pastor Cooper. But in the event you get bogged down on things (I suspect it will eventually happen and way before you hit vols. 2 & 3) you can always try any number of intro. books to his theology. I'd go with an *_"oldie but goodie_* from the late 80's which has the advantage of several contributors tackling his work and not one sole author. (Got it at a killer price through CBD way back in the early 90's.) *_"The Theology of Wolfhart Pannenberg: Twelve American Critiques, with an Autobiographical Essay and Response"_* (eds. Carl E. Braaten and Philip Clayton) books.google.com/books?isbn=1532603657

+Dr. Jordan B Cooper -- Interesting on that last part. If you have an online article, podcast, etc. regarding your disagreement with Pannenberg, it would be nice if you supplied a link or perhaps a critique by someone else.
