My mom grew rhubarb when I was little in Southern California and used it for strawberry-rhubarb pies. When I had my own kids, I wanted them to have those amazing pies, so I bought rhubarb at the store when it was "in season" - in the Spring. Since it was only available a few weeks each year in stores, I started growing my own rhubarb a few years ago, and I'm still learning about. I never saw a rhubarb flower or knew they existed until this year, and now my rhubarb is COVERED with them. Has anyone else noticed how SLIMY they are?

I find rhubarb flowers very pretty as landscaping shrubs. They are very attractive to bees. And on a home scale, the impact that letting them flower has on the size of stalks is quite minimal! So I don't find it necessary to remove the flowers.

First time adding 1 rhubarb plant into the garden last fall. Today growing nicely but do have a giant flower blooming. Since it's a new planting do I still cut the flower down before the first harvest ? Thank you for your video as well.

Hi Steven, Yes, cutting the flowers will help the plant establish instead of putting the energy to making seeds. We remove the flower stalks when they emerge, sometimes every year or every other year

Hi Bob, Rhubarb is surprisingly part of the buckwheat family! I also thought that it was part of the chard family too! I believe chard is part of the amaranth/beet family. Have a good night friend!

Question about harvesting the rhubarb; is it really not okay harvest rhubarb in the first year? Will it damage the plant too much? I've only seen people advise that leaving it to harvest in year 2 is best to establish the roots, but they never explain why beyond that. It also seems like everyone kind of does their own thing with growing it in general, like some leave the flowers and some take it out etc. I plan to grow some this season which is why I'm wondering. Thanks for the vid~

Hi, Yes if it's a new plant, I would let it establish the first season. This will make the plant more productive in the coming years. I cut off the flower stalks, otherwise the stalk do not grow as big, the energy focuses on flower and seed production which can lessen the size and quality of the stalks. Hope this helps!
