Why You Should Roll with BJJ White Belts Like It’s a Fight

Today's video is from a BJJ White Belt who's about 2 years into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and says that he is always getting injured. His question is whether or not BJJ is even right for him. Possibly he's too fragile or something.
Now I cannot answer that question, because who knows? I've seen some seemingly frail people become expert grapplers while some stout dudes ended up quitting early on.
Instead, I went on to ask him more about his rolling and he said he tries to take things slow and easy during rolling. Now this might seem like a smart idea, and against higher BJJ belts it can be.
But as I'll explain in the video. Rolling like this against lower belts can be downright dangerous.
Hopefully the video is useful to you with your training and hopefully helps you avoid some injuries.

I seem to encounter 2 types of white belts and treat them both differently. The younger athletic or "spazy" white belts who are out to win ADCC gold each roll I have to smash, so they settle down and use technique. The other white belt who is timid and unsure I try and help with basic concepts so that each time they roll they start to build some defense and can come up with a plan of attack based off technique. The strong college wrestlers are another story, at 58 years old sometimes it's just survival and treachery when I can get away with it.

@@natesmith5778 I prefer to roll with older higher level belts, even if I know their technique is levels above mine and I will eventually get caught I learn more and can "play jiu jitsu" instead of get into some frantic grappling battle. Back when I was able to do bjj, as a white belt, I was told by higher ranks that I was great to roll with. A friend I roll with asked me “but why are those crazy whitebelts so strong?” I asked him, “how long has it been since you’ve had adrenaline while training?” They are full of adrenaline, because they are scared, so they are truly going 100%. You’ve probably gone nowhere near 100% for a long long time. Once they stop being so scared, then they won’t be so stiff and full of adrenaline. Best thing is to take it seriously enough to just keep them from hurting themselves or you. They can’t keep up that pace forever. I don’t even work submissions all that much, I just get position. If it happens then ok, but a lot of them don’t even know that they should tap when they really ought to. More often than not, I will use chokes over joint locks, because a lot of them won’t tap and don’t know how much danger they are in. When they are full of adrenaline, they literally can’t think that they are capable of ending it with a simple tap. Stay safe out there

Now I am a lot slower and try to use technique vs strength (6’2”, 265lbs). Trying to learn then held to use strength. My instructor/coach goes at me and I end up trying to frame and shrimp. I’ll follow up in a few months on my progress. Oss

I always roll with white belts to comletely shut them down and submit them without injuring them. It´s about a good a gauge as you have to how effective your jiu jitsu actually is. Rolling against higher belts is usually more of a game and/or you know eachothers´ game. The unpredictable nature of white belts/beginners is what makes them so indespensable as training partners.

Also, Always wear a mouth guard when rolling with newbies and beginner white belts. The opponent needs to be respected always, no matter the perceived level, and that means you need to be ready to meet whatever challenge they throw at you. Good video. As a blue belt myself, I just see it as an opportunity to simulate what grappling with someone off the street might be like, probably untrained, possibly strong, drunk, or on drugs, and definitely meaning me bodily harm. So I just try to shut them down with technique BEFORE they get a chance to injure me or themselves. It doesn’t always work, but I think it’s a good mindset to work from.

Rolling is like a dance/talk. I believe it has to do with selfishness, poor self awareness, and ego. Most people start at almost zero when rolling first. Who wants to dance with the guy that goes at a faster rhythm then you or the guy who talks just to hear himself talk? You get most out of a dance when things are in synch. You get most out of a talk when information and ideas are exchanged. You get the most out of a roll when you can roll more because you're not injured/exhausted from competing/defending against someone

This is literally me. I just started and try to take it easy. I am training 3 days per week. Some of these white belts go so hard and are using way more strength than technique. I have had 3 injuries so far (shoulder, right hand, left hand). Last time coach put me with a higher level white belt that had like 100 lbs. on me. I told him my shoulder was still recovering and he immediately starts going for a Kimura. I ended up really hurting my hand against him. As a newbie with some months of experience, I often find that rolling with higher belts is better because I'm not constantly worried about injuring my bicep AGAIN, as they don't crank submissions. It also helps me improve my technique because without correctly applying them, or just using brute strength, I find myself unable to do things like escapes, sweeps, passes, etc.

Our school addresses this by requiring beginners to demonstrate a level of competency with our white belt defensive curriculum before they are allowed to roll. This usually takes 4-6 weeks. They do still participate in live positional or technical drill with close instructor supervision. Often beginners are panicky and spazzy because they feel, stuck smashed and overwhelmed and don't have a clue what to do. By requiring this initial acclimation to BJJ we give them some tools to help them settle down and learn. This is not perfect or fool-proof, but I think it helps.

As a brown at 66 yrs, I use the boa constrictor type of concept .. I pull them in to take away their speed and agility and make them feel like they are being smothered or crushed from both the top or bottom positions .. From the top very heavy pressure and from the bottom a closed guard where I work a lot on head control where they cannot posture up and exhaust themselves trying .. This keeps them in a semi panic mindset where they have difficulty thinking clearly and are just burning energy trying to escape ..

I'll usually pair up with another guy thats older that gets it, our 6 am class is all over 40. Our evening class is young kids who, if I ask them to do 75 and they go 110, I'll go Trex arms and/or lock them into my guard so they can't do anything. I’ve experienced the same issue. Kept getting injured. One critical realization was that people will match your pace. So going slow/methodical is one answer that is working for me so far. Do this for months or years and just give your body time to get used to the type of impact that BJJ has on your body. Keep the intensity low and your partner will too. If not, avoid that dude, he will hurt you eventually.

This is why white belts don't get to spar at my school. We're like Gracie Academy in that we have a belt (gray) between white and blue. Doesn't take long to get through that initial period of learning the basics and doing positional stuff, but they at least have some control by the time they get to start free rolling. Better off delaying the early rolls now, so they can keep rolling for much longer over the years.

I'm resting off a bruised or fractured rib right now, not officially diagnosed yet, but I'm 95% sure. I'm midway through my second month and rolled with a brand new white belt, bad idea. I didn't know he was, and I think the instructor should have been on it and paired him with the blue belt or a higher white belt, as I didn't know enough to keep us both safe. He also didn't tap during a cross collar choke and afterward said he thought he was going to pass out until I finally let go after adjusting my grip and pressure a couple times. I had to tell him, I have no idea what he's experiencing, so if he doesn't tap I assume either I'm doing something wrong, or to just going to keep going until he does tap, or passes out. He learned don't be stubborn, tap early and often, or someone who's not me WILL make him pass out.

I'm a 45 4 stripe purple belt. The biggest problem I have is a new 18 yr old white belt. I call him Taz because he goes 110% all the time and almost never runs out of energy. He's put me out of training twice so far. Heel kicked me in the calf by accident and almost broke my arm pulling an arm bar to hard and fast for practicing. As I was going to tap, because he did catch me with my guard down, POP! Four people around us yelled tap to him it was so loud! Nothing broken but pulled ligaments. I can roll all day with blue to black belts but white belts always end up killing me! I also have a hard time with beating up on kids. Because you do have to treat it like a fight and then I just feel like a bully. I do BJJ for the Art and health. Not to kill... I live in FL with a CWP, I have other tools for the "fight". BJJ to me is exercise, chess, and health. Not a brawl. So being a higher belt I can choose who to roll with when it comes to lower belts and I have been much more selective as of late. And in turn have been injured less!

I always get injured too. In my opinion, it’s part of the game. I do tend to stay away from spazzy 200 lb white belts though. At 140 lbs, I tend to either roll with purple belts or higher or other like minded lightweight individuals like myself. Two days ago, a younger whitebelt dude who has at least 50lbs went after me with a full force double leg takedown and landed on my ribs. Keep in mind this is at 6 in the morning. This dude also uses smelling salts in the morning to get a “boost”, only because he saw it on the Joe Rogan podcast. Needless to say, I will never roll with him again.

Totally agree. I would recommend this with really anyone you've never rolled with before. I paired up with a purple belt I just met thinking we would be getting pretty technical only to have him repeatedly grind his knuckles into my solar plexus and shove his thumb into my neck (he left a nice bloody gouge on my face with his nail after I tucked my chin to defend). If your opponent starts using really uncontrolled, explosive motions I recommend doing what Chewy says, playing it tight and restricting their movement. A nice half guard (bottom or top) can work wonders.

The main reason was to get in shape before my wedding which is happening in 3 months and to learn some martial art, the thing I always wanted. I didnt know what martial art to choose but after watching you I was sure I want BJJ so I just went to the gym one day and I loved it! Everyone is really friendly there and even tho Im getting bruised quite ofter Im happy about it, maybe even proud of it 😁 Thank you very much Chewie!

I am a small dude and I was always put with the first class white belts bc I’m young and kinda know what I’m doing. The trick is to stick to them like glue with no space and just restrain them. Let them wear themselves out while spazzing safely. Honestly has came in clutch later in life with restraining drunk people.

I started Bzjj in my early 40’s. I had it in my head after a while to “go a little easy” on brand new students so they didn’t get put off. I asked if this was the correct conduct and all the higher belts said “did we go easy on you?” The answer was no, and as they pointed out, it made the eventual tap on a training partner feel like a true accomplishment and not a tokenism. Obviously there are exceptions here, like much smaller people or young women but the reality is that on every occasion that I wound back the intensity a bit, I ran into trouble or came close to being submitted or injured by a new player because I had lost control of the situation. Good video Chewjitsu

As a white belt I have had 2 black eyes at different times (one of the people was a white and the other a brown belt), a fat lip (after a knee to the face), been flipped, been punched in the face, bent my finger joint back, bleed out my toes/knees/finger. Been choked out practicing the moves, when I tapped, not even a drill. To name a few things. I am actually a nice, the teacher now places me with new people. I am very strong but don't use it vs new guys unless threatened.

Not necessarily to get big if that's not a goal, but to be strong and to improve the resilience of your body, bones, and connective tissue. Sounds like the person asking the question would benefit from some time making heavy things defy gravity.

I'm always trying to match people's energy. You never know where people are at in life. In my years of training I've been in school without much of a physical outlet, so I had no excuse but to roll hard. I've lost close family members. Part of the grieving process was this childlike irrational anger, that'd come up for no legitimate reason. HARD rolls during that time were practically therapeutic. Similarly I've had many training partners whose life circumstances could easily make them angry. I've also had labor jobs and worked long days, where I am both tired and literally can't afford to get hurt and miss work. So I roll light and or drill technique.

@@tjl4688 Nah I don't agree with that. I can respect that rule if it's your gym and how you want to run it though. Some people have extensive wrestling, judo, or prior bjj backgrounds on day 1. It's maybe 1 in 100 white belts who cause a minor injury. I know if someone is new and I usually just tell them to chill out if they're spazing out. Injuries I've gotten like a toenail cutting me are things you learn by someone talking to you. I just say "Hey man trim your nails I've been cut pretty bad rolling with people with long nails" and they do it. If they don't I won't roll with them. I stop and coach them during rolls if they make the same mistake a few times and I don't crush them or anything but my goal even with black belts is that we both improve but you can probably do some light rolling even on day 1 as long as you talk to them about what is going on (so kind of positional or drilling) but they can go a little harder day 2 and build up to full speed in a couple weeks.

My last three injuries I did myself no white belt needed. Used a switch from my knee at competition and tore pecs. Somehow during that competition also got tear in right tricep. Then just a few weeks went to bridge someone off me with foot sideways like a dumbass. Knee popped twice. 2 weeks later I can walk up and down steps. The popped rib before that was not my fault but it hurt. I’m starting to think how far you go in BJJ is partially how well you deal with injures. Then not giving a shit and continuing 😂 on to the next one

Great advice. You have to take white belts seriously and definitely agree you have to treat it like a fight and keep things tight. Everyone has a trick up their sleeve these days with all these RU-vid videos, especially white belts. Have to go hard and tight with them. After you destroy them, they will sometimes ease up in future rolls. Plus, in a real life situation, it will likely be like fighting a white belt so best to always train in “white belt kill mode”.

If you are a white belt (as I am) and you're smashing or cranking submissions you're not learning jiu jitsu. Save all that spare energy for doing drills, warmups, etc. You're proving nothing by tapping someone, relax and learn.

I can't train if I limit myself to 30% of power. And I have no problem with me being submitted, by I feel like I have to give my partners a tiny bit of resistance. I am questioning if I am just too old (38y) to get my body adjusted for grappling, or maybe I just need to continue and break through. But yeah, my body totally feels like in car accident day after training every time.

I only get injured during takedown training. This older body doesn't like being slammed on the ground dozens of times in a night anymore. With newer white belts, I'll feel them out first. See what kind of energy they're giving me and adjust my strategy accordingly. If they're spazzy, I negate space. They can't hurt you will flailing limbs if you don't give them room to flail.

As a white belt i completely agree with this. Personally, being in law enforcement before BJJ, i atleast had some i guess some composure and a less ego than some ppl who walk in to the gym. Bt there would still be times where my training partners would tell me to breathe (if i was blindly trying to muscle out of something) or to concentrate on the problem rather than just blindly scramble. Having traing partners who did that really helped. For me it all comes down to ego, if i get subbed 10 times a class which i do regularly, so be it. that is improving my awareness and also developing my training partners too.
