Why You Should Start A Film Collection:
This week's video essay examines the popularity of streaming, the shrinking market for physical media, and of course, why you should start collecting films! This video is different from my usual format, with all of the footage taken of my own film collection (this gave me a good opportunity to show off some of my favourite blu-ray collections!), and as a film collector it felt necessary to discuss why physical media remains important.

Do you collect films, or do you prefer streaming? Do you have a favourite edition in your physical collection? Thanks for watching!

I collect! Have over 1,300 blu-rays, I've run into some hard times at the moment, cancelled all my subscriptions. I have my collection to enjoy and hold onto.

I always preferred physical media, books and DVD's. - One, I'm cheap so I get second hand ( mostly). Two, I want to be able to grab that book or film without having an internet connection or membership. Three, the artwork can be incredible on covers of films and books. Also, if you have a decent amount of space in your home, it looks cool on bookshelves or just neatly arranged around the place.

I have a digital collection with around 3.000 movies, glad I've downloaded those and never signed any streaming service. Finishing now my classical music digital collection

One of the rare collectors who I’ve seen where they collect what they love and don’t collect for the sake of it. I see too many collections that are made up of films they will never watch, own to keep the spine of a criterion collection looking nice, buy films they’ve never seen… collecting should be about passion for the medium but also something to own that you as a person will always have as a personal piece of art. Something you engage with, not show off.

I used to be a crazed collector, but stopped for a bit, but I’ve enjoyed collecting again! A cross-country move forced me to get rid of a bunch of cases and keep discs in sleeves, but I love that I still have them.

I got into movies just a few years ago but have been collecting videogames since my childhood and really appreciate your conciseness and clarity on the importance of physical media. Ownership, preservation, and accessibility vastly prevail over any convenience that a streaming solution might afford me. I also don't trust any of these platforms to be content curators and don't want to endlessly pay for multiple subscription fees.

Really love collecting. It may be my financial ruin but I'll continue doing it for as long as I can. I never upgraded to blu ray for financial reasons so I'm still on DVD and some VHS's bit I'm glad as I know I wouldn't have been able to have such a sizeable collection. I think it's great people are becoming more aware of the need to preserve works by doing this. Loved seeing some of the great films you had too in some lovely editions. Really great video as always.

I wish I still had my VHS tapes from my childhood, I had them as recently as 2016 and then I seemed to have lost them 🥲. I don't blame you for not upgrading to blu-ray, it really does get pricey, and in fairness there's still a lot of films on DVD unavailable on blu-ray (depending on your region of course). Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video and seeing some of my collection! 😁

got into collecting last year due to del toro's custodians of cinema tweet. i'm a huge fan of third window films. i'm so proud to own such obscure and important films in a physical medium and collecting blu rays has introduced me to amazing films i never would've found otherwise. great video (ps i'm sooo jealous of ur obayashi anti war trilogy boxset, the day i went to order it was the day it sold out 💔)

I'm so glad to hear that tweet has had such a positive impact! Third Window Films are great, aren't they? I really love that they put so much effort into Asian film releases that would otherwise fall under the radar, and I'm glad they're still going - a few years ago they were on the verge of bankruptcy until they were bought by Arrow 🥰. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I feel lucky I got those Obayashi boxsets before they went out of print 🥲

Financially I've always held off on buying a lot of physical media. But I would really love to invest in region free player. I want more physical copies, and foreign movies are high on my list. Plus I looovveeee special features, that's a huge down side of streaming and newer generic North American copies.

I suppose the upside for collectors (and those new to collecting too) of other people donating/discarding their film collections is that thrift shops and charity shops can have some amazing bargains in them too which can be a good starting place for building a collection 🥰. A region free player is a good investment imo if you want to buy films not available in your country, and they're usually very affordable too 😁 I hope when you make that leap into building a collection that you have a blast doing it too! 🙏

From Vancouver Canada. Me Ive been collecting films and tv shows since 1999, with my first film being Blade Runner Directors cut DVD which I bought for 15 USD at the time. ( the next day I bought Sorcerer 1977 and Ghost in the Shell DVDs for 20 USD each). Now April 7 2024 I have about 2048 blu rays and DVDs. Been watching Movies since 1973. with my first movie being the Exorcist. when I was 6 years old. snuck into a cinema owned by my buddy's family at the time. I was so scared my eyes were closed with my hands for half the movie haha.

Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell were among my first purchases on DVD 😊 I had GiTS on VHS but it was something special to not need to rewind and slowly see deterioration in the quality as time went on.

Film collecting is my guilty pleasure, i dont really know anyone else close who does it.. I love collecting my favorite directors one by one and trying something new from different distributors occasionally. My newest edition is the new release of "Bully" (2001, Larry Clark) on blu ray for the first time from Umbrella, was waiting on it for months and am very excited to have it in my collection.

I feel the same way, favourite filmmakers (or filmmakers I just discovered but love) becomes a collecting priority for me, and then finding unique titles I hadn't heard of before become a nice surprise discovery if they're released from distributors I've come to trust. I remember Bully being good! I haven't seen it in so long though. 😅 I'm a little similar to this though, I'll keep an eye out for a release and pick it up as soon as I can 😁

I do like the idea of holding and examining a physical release that has a lot of love put into it, but then I think of having an ever-growing pile of physical media that takes up space and becomes an extra hassle when it's time to move, and that does not really appeal. Plus I don't know where to look for boutique releases at reasonable prices. I do try to save films to my hard drive when given the chance though

I don't collect movies because I am not big on rewatching and for some odd reason I don't think I own movies when I own them in a digital format anyway (Blu Ray is still a digital format). What I will add to the video is to visit and encourage your local libraries. Those can be treasure troves of movies and some even offer digital rentals through services like Kanopy.

My partner's friends commented 'you have CEX in your lounge' because I collect physical games, Blu-rays and DVDs. Made me laugh because I don't even have all of them on display 😂. Love to have my own copies of movies, after watching everyone I know get rid of their DVDs I feel lucky that I can watch shows removed from streaming services.

Me I prefer movies that I like with audio commentary enjoy hearing those while watching the movie with my all time fave being audio commentary by Werner Herzog on his movies. his interactions with Klaus Kinski is simply hilarious. Right now Im reading a short story by 31/10 which is a sequel to his Ghostwatch 1992 UK TV movie which was include as a booklet in the UK 101 films limited edition of Ghostwatch. which I recently acquired on Ebay from another collector living in Manitoba. used but near mint condition. Loving it.

I love a good commentary track too! Guillermo Del Toro did a fantastic commentary track for Dreyer's Vampyr for the Eureka DVD, and I found it so insightful because without that commentary I personally found Vampyr quite a puzzling film to watch. Herzog's commentaries are always great too! I've heard about the short story sequel to Ghostwatch but have yet to read it, I should update my Ghostwatch DVD to the 101 Films blu-ray 😁

@@YouHaveBeenWatchingFilms I dont have Vampyr yet but I will be looking for it. soon I also have a night gallery season 2 DVD from 2008 which has two excellent Del Toro commentaries namely Messiah on Mott street/Painted mirror and Caterpillar/Little Girl lost eps. They removed the commentaries on this DVD and replaced them with different ones on the Night gallery TV show Blu rays from Kino Lorber. the commentaries on the DVD and Blu ray were all very informative and excellent. Just finished 31/10 short story sequel to Ghostwatch and its excellent, The short story booklet is only available on the now Out of print Ghostwatch 101 films limited edition blu. the standard edition does not have it.

My dvd collection is almost entirely composed of anime films and ovas (Macross Plus and Ghost in the Shell for life!), cheep action movies from the last 30 years (if its straight to dvd and in a collection for 5 bucks ar Walmart, ill grab it), and almost every single video game movie (from Double Dragon to Sonic 2). There are a few other things in there like the Lord of the Ring movie or the Matrix or 1917 or Alien and whatnot but I'm fascinated with weird action and video game movies that almost no one thinks of. The Dead or Alive and King of Fighters movies are dull, uninspired, but they are so bizarre and strange that I'm more likely to rewatch them then something good. Uwe Boll's and Paul W.S. Anderson's video game to film adaptations are unhinged and terrible but also so bland just like the lousy Steven Seagull movies I love. I almost always watch them with my head tilt like a confused puppy. There are actually good or fun movies in there. Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Chocolate, Sniper, Safe, and my anime collection is full of my favorites from Studio Ghibli to Ninja Scroll to the Cowboy Bebop film. I think its kinda sad that many cheap action and video game films go unseen and forgotten. Yeah, the new Tomb Raider movie is heavly influenced by the reboot game but it has cool moments like the paint chase or the terror of an acient virus being resurfacing being the main threat. Yes, the Wesker fight scene from Resident Evil: Extinction exists but there really in not much like it out there (and hopefully never again). Its hard to ever recommend these films (the Uwe Bowl movies are all uniquely miserable) but I like collecting them as the odd ball movies that they are. I doubt I'd ever recommend collecting all the Universal Soldiers or Bloodrayne or Starship Trooper sequel or 80s action movie remake 30 years on movie but they somehow captivated me. Now my ps2 gane collection, I'm actually kinda proud of but thats a different story. (Uwe Bowl's BloodRayne: Deliverence and Postal are the only two I've lost and I don't think I'll replace them. At least the Postal games are existential. Good grief, that fucking movie)

That sounds like a really cool, fun collection! I love anime anyway (Ghibli, Cowboy Bebop, and Ninja Scroll are solid choices), and I have a soft spot for video game movies too (I originally had a Silent Hill video review made for this channel but it was blocked, I might try to reupload it again sometime). I've got a soft spot for those types of movies that are just wild messes, not necessarily great movies, but entertaining in their own audacious ways (I recently picked up the Arrow Video Gamera boxsets, and these films are... not good 😅). Always love getting insight into other people's collections like this, no doubt your PS2 collection is great too! 😁

@@YouHaveBeenWatchingFilms My PS2 collection is mostly strange movie tie ins, rare games, and ports of PC games. My copy of the original Yakuza game (with Mark Hamill screaming swears at gangsters), the Half-Life PS2 port (with a co-op campaign), and the Deus Ex PS2 port are my biggest treasures.

55 000 comics, 2000 games, 1500 books, 5500 cd's and 6500 dvd/blurays......physical of course! Streaming sucks! With movies/series I don't really care about this or that edition. Don't exactly care for the extras....I want the movies, to watch whenever I like, that's it. Old movies on dvd....fine, they're old. Region lock? Hahaha lol 🤣, I make my player region free....no problem.
