Home made compost is generally far better than shop bought in my experience, and it is also a great way to recycle garden and kitchen waste to put goodness back into your garden. Turning your compost heap is important to re mix the materials and add oxygen into the pile. In this video I show you how I turn one of our compost heaps and explain why I do it this way.

Add some ‘jus de homme’ - it makes a big difference, puts some fire inside it and is especially good when the general temperatures are low.

I have one geobin for composting. Works great, but it's amazing how incredibly far down the material decomposes. I'd venture to say it decreases by 3/4ths. I would expand the compost area, but I'm not sure I generate enough mass to feed another one. I should get back to vermacomposting.

Hi Robin. I find it depends on the materials to a degree how much it drops. Wood chip tends hold its own a bit better. I use temp as the guide on when to turn it. All my piles end up as vermicompost in the end, as they cool the second time worms move in to finish the job.

I always expect the unexpected when turning a compost bin. You never know what is going to happen. Weather is all over the place.

Hi Colin. It was pretty uneventful. Yes sun then strong wind and rain here.
