Flowers on the table, beeswax candles at dinner, riding a bike in a three piece suit...these are everyday occurrences in Rajiv's life.
If you're wondering how to take steps towards living a richer, fuller experience, Rajiv believes it's about the many little things that add up to the big picture. You can start in your own home, by simply regularly using the things that you usually save for special occasions. Today Rajiv shares his philosophy using his own possessions as examples.

As a young child, my sister coined a phrase my family still uses to this day: “it’s better to be worn from wear, than worn from dust”. If I recall correctly, it was said in response to my mother telling her she couldn’t wear a special outfit on an ‘unimportant’ day. I say it to myself often 😂

It took me 12 years to place one sticker. Now when I buy something that can hold a sticker, I start looking to see if it fits on it. I was always afraid I wouldn't have the item long enough to enjoy it despite the evidence of having the same lunchbox from elementary school. I didn't need it for college and when I found it again after I graduated, it had molded. Step-by-step.

This is everything i believe in. I'm a soapmaker and hear often that the soaps are too pretty to use. I use natural colors and essential oils that do fade after they are about a year old so not using them is sad because they are meant to be enjoyed while they are pretty and fragrant. Life is too short to just put things we love on shelves. ❤

I got passed down some vintage 'RogeR & Gallet Paris Tea Rose Perfumed Soaps' from France that my mother had never used, she 'saved' them. Mom is still alive & well she gave them to me but I almost feel like I will be doing something wrong by her if I use them. I had a talk with myself that they are now 'mine' I own them & I can use them.

What a lot of people also miss, is that they feel they can't afford much for nice things. But when you shift your mindset to saving up to buy ONE of something you really want, and use only that, you really do end up spending less over time. My example is, three years ago, I decided to buy an American Leather Company Purse that I LOVED (paid over $100, worth probably $200), which was the most I had ever spent on a purse. But I use it EVERY day, and if I'm ever tempted to buy another cheap purse on sale, it's easy to say no, because I already have my favourite purse. And I'm sure that I've actually saved money by not buying multiple, cheap things. Thanks for a great video.

Yes! In addition, the cost often means better quality. So you won't have to replace in a long time if ever. I like your thought on the psychological side too; You are less likely to buy something that doesn't compare with your favorite thing.

Yes!! I own a chain stitch sewing machine. It needs new belts and a deep-clean. But it makes me so happy to see the well-worn corners of the machine table, the spots on the trundle that feet clearly sat for hours upon hours, and to know it was USED. Someone had this machine as their workhorse. Someone used it to sew countless miles of stitches. And that's so cool! I've also got my grandma's crystal glasses and goblets. You bet I use them when I just want to. Why let them sit eternally only looking pretty?

@@Cruznick06 I’m not sure crystal is safe for constant use unless it is lead free. I’m no expert and there are different opinions on the subject, but I’d rather err on the safe side in this case. I think the worst is decanting and storing in crystal though: I always wanted to do that, but I am too worried about long-term spirits resting so long in a possibly unsafe vessel. I’m not sure the lead-free alternatives are as beautiful, either, so it is quite disappointing.

He loved working with leather and metals too. You remind me a lot of him. I am unashamedly by far not a minimalist. Nor a Marie Kondo fan. I love my 'stuff'. It is all the 'good stuff' I chersh that can't easily be found, fixed or re created these days. However, I have always been one of those people to see the beauty in quality things. This is definitely from my grandparents influence. My particular love is the 40's and 50s. I am 50 and it has taken about 34 years of carefully finding beautiful and useful objects to create a homely and unique vintage style life. My dinner set is 65 years old. I use my harlequin glass and crystal glasses, 'fancy' cutlery and serving ware, and good napery. I must say I still cringe a bit when red lipstick is about to be embedded into a fine cloth napkin, but then the satisfaction of the laundry ritual can be enjoyed! I smile to myself when I see you use laundry blue and do many of the things I have done for years. We live in a world where quality and craftspersonship is diminishing or lost. Not valued or viable. People love and admire it but often can't afford it. Or even 'vintage' things in thrift stores now being out of the price range for many people. Some things are just not able to be sourced or repaired anymore. Old bikes, cars, sewing machines etc. There is either no one left who can or wants to do it. Even finding a decent cobbler to properly repair my 25 year old leather penny loafers is not easy. Clothes are thankfully easy. I knit and sew my own re creations in my style from quality vintage patterns, fabrics and yarns. Consumerism and social brainwashing to have the next new thing is a real problem. It's not about getting rid of everything. It's about preserving and enjoying the essence and processes and rituals of good living and living well. It is also about creating every day joy in how you choose to live in the now. Love your channel. And the comments! What you are presenting resonates positively with many. Oh I don't think that means you're far from being a minimalist at all. It just sounds like you've just made a point of only buying good quality items regardless of how old they might be. Sounds sensible to me. I agree that good things are hard to find these days. Clothes especially. What's worse is I've realised it's easier to find good quality men's clothes than women's!!! So from now on I'm buying men's t-shirts and jumpers (which I hope I won't have to buy as often as a result of them being better quality).
@SzilviaVirag
@SzilviaVirag Год назад
I also can't stand Marie Kondo myself. I borrowed her book from the library and the only useful thing I got out of it was how to fold clothes nicely. I couldn't believe she wrote stupid things like "don't keep old buttons because you'll never mend your clothes." As soon as I got rid of things I didn't need I was a lot more motivated to replace missing buttons on clothes that were still otherwise decent looking and fit me. I also think her idea of how many books people should keep suggests she doesn't read much. Not to mention her lumping cameras into a general "electronic things" category horrified me.
@leolady6588
@leolady6588 Год назад
@@SzilviaVirag I don't understand people just throwing things out if they don't wear or use something for 6 months. I've kept things for decades that still look great and have purpose. I always get comments on my vintage accessories. I can tell you where in the world I bought something, or how something in my possession came to be. In my experience, these people are quite beige and uninteresting. I feel uncomfortable in their sterile houses that are usually as energetically dead as the moon. No, they don't read. They're more concerned with keeping a show home than one which is exhaled in and lived in. They're the people who may scan some old photos to digitally store and throw out cherished family albums that you see in the thrift stores full of once cherished memories. Sad. They don't seem to feel the history or energy in the things/objects of life. They can't see the point. Big deal, Marie Condo can fold clothes and organise. It took me years to accept that I am an artistic soul with my own organsed 'chaos'. I know where everything is that I have. I love everything I have. I have an order orfthings. I look after everything. When things can't be fixed, yes, I dispose of them thoughfully. And I take my own collected things in and out of storage when I want to re decorate. I guess I just no longer feel like I should be living how everyone else thinks is proper. My husband feels the same. We are seen as being quite eccentric. We think we are perfectly normal. We have our cats lounging on furniture, projects in various stages of completion, books on the coffee table that we actually read. Nothing is a prop. Everything is clean. It is also ever evolving. That is also why I resonate with Rajiv. He gets all those points. I like that he's showing these elements of respectful and fine living to a younger generation.

Such a moving video, thank you so much! My wedding outfit was something my Mum and I went shopping for together three weeks before my wedding. I wanted something not-white, richly coloured (because I am a messy person) and that embodied my Chinese heritage and western upbringing (I was born in Tasmania). It’s a richly and heavily embroidered ankle length skirt with deep vermillion and deep gold peonies; a fine knit long sleeve printed skinny top; a boxy, cropped roughly dropped-shoulder knit burgundy and burnished gold knit pullover-vest that came from a non-wedding shop. Twenty five years later, I still wear the skirt but now with a leather jacket and old T-shirt and combat boots; the knit long sleeve under slip dresses; and the cropped knit over a vintage T with baggy jeans or baggy leather pants. And each time I wear these items, over and over and over again, I am reminded of that special time with my mother, our intimate and thoroughly fun wedding, and the day I began the rest of my life with my One.

Just don't think about it because this will make you too careful, spoiling your fun. Be childlike, not childish, with their use ,allow yourself to have that freedom and really see the latent Beauty Within that which most would see as mundane. Explore your true excitement. Using those things you love as an expression of your true self and your creativity will allow to vibrate at a higher frequency of peace , joy, and love ❤️. It works for me. I love using my nice things. When I first moved out on my own I was a "saver." After about ten years and a big move across country, I realized I was packing stuff that I never really ever used... At that point I had a mindset shift. I started using the fine china a few times a week, started wearing my nicer clothes a lot more often, wear the red lipstick just because... and fresh flowers whenever possible are in the house. I've taught my daughter, life's too short for crappy coffee, sad tea and cheap chocolate. So when those things are in the house, they are enjoyed. It feels like I'm giving all those "once saved for special occasions" items a lot more love and attention now that they're being used on a more frequent basis.

We all prepare for a magical day that never comes, because we’re always preparing for it. I started using a beautiful end-grain cutting board that was too nice to use. An important point here, is the cutting board doesn’t get better with use. But it’s such a pleasure to cut on a well crafted board. The knife stays sharp due to the grain orientation. The physical feedback from the heavy mass is just right. It doesn’t slide around randomly. And it’s pleasing to look at. The quality of life while using it is easily 10x. Things that are actually nice and well designed, and not just expensive, actually make your life better, while you’re using them. If you’re using well designed things all day, your entire life becomes better. What the hell are we saving it for?

I completely agree. I started going to estate sales a couple years ago, and just walking through the belongings of the dead really gives a perspective on life that I don't think I could have gotten any place else. I see their best china in pristine condition. They've rarely, if ever, eaten on it. I see beautiful furniture they've never sat on, and books they've never read. Rooms filled with sentimental objects that they must have had stuffed there for fifty years. Curio cabinets keeping glass and pottery away from the very people that should be filling them with flowers and knickknacks. The houses are sometimes bizarre in ways I can't fully explain. The dead have strange sentiments and the survivors have learned their own odd lessons in their passing; none of which are the lesson I learn from them both. The dead made a choice, and I feel like they chose not to live a part of their life, but keep it to show to me, at that oddest of times. I know what something looks like that has been so loved and cherished that the owner was afraid to touch it. As if it were a butterfly's wings. But butterflies are beautiful because they're fleeting, and these people have taught me things they never learned themselves. I'm glad to see someone else's life written in scuffs on the things I now own, and can't wait to see when my own will join them. I use fine china like it's a paper plate. I wonder what someone is going to learn from me one day.

So here’s my thing about using your nice stuff. I completely agree with the idea of using your nice things often. However, I do think that when you use your nice things you may have to accept that your time with those things may be fleeting. I have a set of ceramic handmade bowls that I would never normally be able to afford but my friend made them. I’ve already broken 2/6. And I think when having nice things like expensive linens is a serious financial investment, that can be a hard thing to accept so it makes sense to have a set of “nice” napkins and inexpensive napkins. Some things it makes sense and others it doesn’t. Sometimes the only reason people have nice china or heirlooms is because they inherited them from people who rarely used them and now they’re in incredible condition. If you’re going to invest in a leather bag, that’s an item that’s made from a material that’s going to get better over time. Ceramics or linens, once they’re broken or have stains that’s kind it, which I think is a harder pill to swallow for people who struggle to afford those things. I love using my nice ceramic bowls but I have to accept that I won’t have them forever but I love using the nice things I have and it brings me a lot of joy. Love these videos!

Look up kintsugi! The Japanese art of repairing ceramics with gold, though you could use other materials. I had a soapstone hand carved animal ornament I just adored, then one day I knocked it off the shelf and two of its legs broke off. I thought it was forever ruined until I realised duh, I could just take take the obvious initiative to glue it back together. Now I love it even more than I did before for that little story attached to it. It’s like it’s truly had it’s own little life.

Dear Rajiv, I have a small number of items that I call "special". Most are something given to me by family or friends, which I hardly used because "they" considered them to be used on special occasions. With that in mind, I sort of respected their wishes but hated that I could only see and use them during special times. Well, I don't think that way any longer. So much joy Is how I feel now using them every day as long as I live. Cherishing them even more and loving them, I'm just taking care of them for a short time but knowing that they bring a smile to my face in remembrance of those loving people who entrusted me in taking care of them for as long as I can. Thank you for reminding us also that, "time is fleeting". Keep on videoing. Sincerely, Jersey Ann from NJ 🥰

I love this video. I’m very fond of old things that show their life story in the form of marks, scratches, worn out spots. They often last because their quality is high. New, untouched things have no soul. Rajiv, thanks for the reminder. I’ll try to use my nicest things - the things I am scared to use - more often. I’m terrified to use my late grandmother’s blue and white porcelain but maybe I shouldn’t be. What you said about your jacket reminded me of my favourite coat. It cost a lot of money but has kept me warm through my entire career. Its sleeves are now the shape of my arms. I love it so much.

I once read a very sad story told by the sister of the deceased lady, how, when she had to pack up her beloved sister's clothing, she found beautiful French Lingerie stacked away for a special day. It broke her heart. So yeah, I agree with you totally. I think that when we store up these earthly treasures for some special future day, we are really saying "I am not worthy of treating myself as #1" . However there is also that time factor where we don't have the time to enjoy what we have because it takes time to set an elegant table for a simple meal, so we stick with the every day common crockery. At least I love my porcelain coffee mugs which I do put to every day use. We must learn to slow down a little and practise elegance in every aspect of life the way that you do. Appreciate your thoughts and just love the way you have set a standard of living for yourself and teaching others to do likewise in this fast lane on which we are all racing. Thanks for this special channel Rajiv. I enjoy it every time !!!

This is an important thing to consider, and one well worth the effort if one's never given it the chance. To use the nice, the precious, the handmade, they're not given in the hopes that they'll be kept pristine and in perfect condition, to be treated like they're too important to be used. Use the gifts given, enjoy and treasure them by--and in--their use. Gifts are rarely given in the hopes that they'll be kept forever, but to be enjoyed by the one receiving.

I love this philosophy of using and enjoying your good stuff every day. I try to do this and I always use linen napkins in silver napkin rings at all meals. I have quite a collection of rings and napkins for my guests as well. The best way to get any yellow stain such as lily pollen, turmeric, or curry out of my napkins or indeed any surface is to use lavender oil. It instantly removes those yellow stains from linen, marble, wood, carpets, and clothes.

12:21 I will add to the "Where is this all going to go when I'm gone" that this is a great question to ask even from an environmentally conscious perspective. Natural materials, even if all don't have a higher longevity are currently more expensive than plastic alternatives, from polyesters and acrylics in clothing to laminates, glued scraps, rubbers and other toxic stuff used in construction, insulation, interior pieces, carpets etc. Natural materials with use just slowly shed away microscopic pieces of them that are processed by nature and at the end of their lifespan they can become one with it. Unlike the plastic alternatives that will create pollution in both cases - them being used daily or them being unused and discarded. So many things turn "bad" before even reaching the customers and end in landfills. If they were natural materials with no additions, this wouldn't be such a worrisome issue, even if it were a shame of the work that went into their creation.

Almost everything I own is second hand, thrifted, estate sale find, off the street find…. The point is, they are all the riches of another that either outgrew, or no longer around to enjoy, I never mind using real silver for everyday dinner or real linen table cloth, Real crystal glasses I drink water out of, and we have guests sometimes things get broken and I don’t care, I would if I paid the price I’m sure half of the stuff in my home cost originally. I love that everything I own has a story to it, has a past, I also love that I don’t have an attachment to items, I feel like no one should and coveting items and keeping them safe seems weird to me I believe all items should be used and I specifically believe that all really cool shit should be used first.

Ive seen this in myself, but also in my approach to motherhood. Sometimes I have cute, slightly ornamental outfits I 'save' for a special occasion for my daughter. She's 14 months old and I've realized that by saving it, she quickly grows out of it, and I regret not dressing her in her pretty clothes even for a mundane day, getting them dirty or doing nothing special but to take a photo and remember when she was that small and wearing it. We are always waiting for 'the right moment' and never consider it might just be now.

well made things get better with every use! and when they stop getting better with every use, repair them!! it really fills me with hope to see videos like these in a world where most things are made to break and to be thrown away. we are able to have much more fulfilling lives when we feel a true connection with the objects that we use and by using your nicest things everyday and seeing the wear and tear that they go though you are filling them with life and growing a connection with them. i bet that you feel such a connection with that tweed jacket that you've worn a hundred times and when the elbow gets a hole you'll add a patch, not throw the jacket away. my point is well illustrated by that leather bag, it genuinely brought a tear to my eye seeing written down every place it has been in the world, these objects carry their history in the marks that are left on them. i just know that you'll never forget that bag, you have a connection to it and maybe even your potential children and grandchildren will love that bag too (or maybe some lucky stranger who finds it in a second hand store!). things that are made to last are so important :)
