I have lived in Dover all my life, never felt in any danger. I've been all over Britain and I don't think Dover is any worse than any other town, they all have their good and bad points. The reason why it was so quiet where you was walking was because the pedestrian area was having a lot of work done. There are so many places of interest to visit, obviously the castle, the Dover Roman painted house, Dover museum which houses the bronze age boat, the Western Heights, the Drop Redoubt, the seafront, Shakespeare beach, Samphire Hoe, Langdon cliffs, Connaught Park, Russell Gardens and Kearsney Abbey, plus lots of walks over the Downs. I think for the size of the town we have so much on offer.
For history buffs, Dover castle is incredible. There's so much there in one spot it's hard to believe. Beyond the medieval castle, there's a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church, tunnels from the Napoleonic era, and World War II tunnels. I'm an American that took the train to Dover for a day trip back in 2005, and at least back then I didn't feel any less safe than other towns in the UK.
@@Paul_W.E_Ingham Dover is an absolute hole. I can’t put it any other way. Go hang out in the High street and you will see everything you don’t want to see. Because of some of the population there are real issues and the spill out onto the streets at all times of the day or night. Dover is best driven through as you get off the ferry from France. Don’t stop till you are past Folkestone and you will be just fine 😁😁. Although Folkestone is changing and maybe in a decade or so might be quite nice.
Have to confess the only times I've been to Dover have been to catch the ferry, so it was interesting seeing more of the town, especially the castle. I really enjoy watching your trips out, thanks Alanna,.
I was born in Buckland Hospital in Dover in 1971 and have lived here all my life, I’m currently 51. The town may not equal some of the larger Kent towns such as Canterbury or Maidstone but it’s own little town. Where else can you get the White Cliffs, a Castle, some beautiful parks with easy access to the continent. Also if you stand on the white cliffs on a clear day, equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can read the clock face in Calais.
I have a home in Dover. It's a beautiful place full of lovely people. Living in USA primarily, it's so refreshing to visit UK and experience the rich history all over the country!
I live between Folkestone and Dover. I admit that I rarely go into Dover just because Folkestone has more amenities. Dover is not pretty but is improving, remember it was a garisson during WW11 suffered a lot of bombing and was rebuilt very cheaply - this is now being addressed. The seafront, marina and small wharf areas are quite nice. Actually stayed at the castle for a few night when had family over from SA - you can rent a cottage - which we did - or a tower! Agreed that there is so much to do at the castle, so much history stretching right back to the time of William the Conqueror. Glad you enjoyed your day and are so openminded.
I was raised in St Margaret's Bay, 5 miles north of Dover, during the 1980s so I am familiar with the area. There is Dover Castle and that is it. Nothing else. The High Street is dead and so is the seafront with the A20 dual carriage-way artificially separating the City Centre with hideous 1960s block of flats overlooking the port. Locals always went shopping to Canterbury on weekends, never remained in Dover. Moreover, many in the town blamed the opening of the Channel tunnel but no tourists ever stopped in Dover with Cathedral City Canterbury the first port of call and London thereafter. This was exacerbated when the the bulk of the ferry traffic was routed via the Eastern Docks and the 1979 Dover Bypass, the Jubilee Way. Very few ever bothered to visit the Castle despite towering over the town. An expensive visit and the interior is disappointing....
Dangerous is relative. If you live in the US, Dover is very small beer indeed. I'm an expat living in a US city in a touristy state which had 117 murders in 2021. So...
When I last had a motorbike I used to love riding along the coast road from Brighton to Dover practically every weekend and end up at a viewing spot that overlooked the cross channel port and watch the ferries come and go whilst having Dover castle in the background!
Arise Queen Alanna! I’m born and bred in Dover and you (and the butler) did great in one day. Dover has been down on its luck for decades but the history is incredible. Notable places to visit are the Roman lighthouse (in castle grounds), Drop Redoubt, Roman Painted House, Dover Museum and Russell Gardens. The White Horse pub you walked past is worth a visit too.
Your travelling videos are so good, they’re so much fun to watch! I had to go to my grandads funeral today, and there was a family gathering after but at family gatherings I always used sit with my grandad, so I was feeling sad, but playing the game with you lifted me up a lot and helped me feel better! Yay, who doesn't love a bit of Adventures & Castles. I've not been to Dover for many a year but it's a very holds a very important place in British history. Being one of the original Cinque ports it has been at the forefront of trade with the world and the defence of this little island we call Britain. Thanks for the tour Alanna. 🙂
We have been to Dover a couple of times now, and stayed at St Martins Guest House, it was the best one. The White horse pub does brilliant meals, and the sunsets were fantastic. Its a photographers paradise, information centre has everything to do and a hop to France for lunch was a nice surprise for us.( foot passengers on P&O ferries, with passports) People of Dover have always welcomed us, so I have nothing but praise for the town.
A lot of places in Kent - Dover might fall into this a bit - have basically had the same problem for the last couple of decades. Once they were "go to" places for people living in London and the Midlands who wanted to visit the coast and have beach holidays. Then one day someone figured out a way to take people to other countries for bargain prices and the one industry all these places relied so heavily on went away very quickly. Dover, Margate, Folkestone, Sheppey, all these places will be like anywhere else in England and really the wider world. There will be plenty of good, decent everyday folks living alongside the people who unfortunately give them their reputation
What the Spanish resorts offer is guaranteed sunshine. In the UK that's not really possible. Dover and Folkestone have been ports for centuries and that won't change. Margate's position is nowhere near as strong.
As you are a Kentish Maid, don't forget the Cider Festival at Brogdale Farm in Faversham on Saturday 28th August and Sunday 28th August....it's a fantastic event, with great cider, great food, great music and lots to do!!
Don't forget Deal and Walmer - just along from Dover - wonderful traditional seaside towns. Neglected probably because of their shingle beaches. Walmer has a fabulous castle and Deal is where many British stars retire to. Very much worth a day trip!
Hi, great video. I've lived in Dover for the most of my life and find Dover often gets bad press, however, like most towns it is struggling and does have it's fair share of undesirables. That said, Dover is so rich in history. A few notible place to visit are Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens, Samphire Hoe, the Roman Painted House and Connaught Park to name but a few. On the Western Height you have the Napolionic Drop Redoubt which opens certain days of the year, also below that is the Grand Shaft, a triple spiral staircase. The Dover Transport Museum in Whitfield is a hidden gem, well worth a visit. All the best and thanks for all the hard work you put into the videos for us all to enjoy :) Ian
For me, a must-see is the Dover Bronze Age Boat. I think it was discovered when they were digging out one of the underpasses you walked through. The timbers have been preserved, and you can see how our predecessors were trading with Europe thousands of years ago.
It’s a great place for history. If you visit the Dover museum there is an Iron Age boat which was dug up on Dover Sea front, also close by is The Roman Painted house which shows more local history. On the hill opposite the castle known as the Western Heights you have the Drop Redoubt, a Napoleonic era defensive fort, and close by the spiral stair which goes down through the cliff to the seafront (this is only open to the public on certain days though). If you have time for a cliff top walk there is also the Bleriot memorial, the site where Louis Bleriot flew the first plane across the English Channel, and if tide is low you can see the masts of ships which have sunk along the coast. Not to mention the rare Chalkhill Blue, and Adonis Blue butterfly which can be found there.
Dover used to be quite a nice place and had a pretty genteel way of life. Nice hotels, fancy ballrooms and busy beaches. It was a nice seaside town that because it was further away from London, didn’t get the same amount of income or attention that places like Brighton got. There was money in the town that came from holiday makers, retirees and the ports. The ports - along with seaside holidays, dipped a bit in the ’70s when cheap package holidays and charter airlines line Lakers were formed. However, the biggest economic hit it took was probably the Channel Tunnel. The train goes underground before it hits Dover/Folkestone and took away a huge amount of passing trade. It’s still busy for freight, but truckers don’t stop and shop - or book a hotel to stay at the night before catching the ferry. I left the UK a long time ago, but from what I can gather, Dover has become a place where long term unemployed folk were encouraged to move to - like Hastings. The void left by the Channel Tunnel meant cheap accommodation. My grandfather was a customs officer there for many years, he and my grandmother lived in nearby Folkestone, which was also rather nice back in the day. British seaside towns took a real hit from the creation of the package holiday, with Cornwall, once one of the UKs favourite holiday destinations becoming the poorest county in the UK. I know in your videos you’ve mentioned the north/south divide, but really there are a lot of places that were left behind, especially by Thatchers ideas of what the UK should be
Getting to Dover is easy, just fall asleep on a late train from London to Maidstone ( I think) and next thing you now, your in Dover. Not cheap getting back.
Thank you for doing this, Alanna! Dover is a place that I have been through rather than been to - driving to the port bound for ferries to France on European tours, zooming through on the Eurostar train bound for the Channel Tunnel. Once, I got off a ferry after a European visit and went into town itself in order to catch a train to Oxfordshire (which took me via Bearsted and London) so I got a glimpse of Dover beyond the ports. Now, because of you, I can see the *real* Dover without any international travel baggage. Great work!
Loved it. I’ve been through Dover on the way to France by Ferry, but never stopped there. It looks OK. Castle looks fabulous. The scenery in that video was outstanding. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Dover's a working seaport, and most of those have their rougher side, even the quite small ones. (I can recommend Holyhead if you fancy a fight outside a pub on a Saturday night). Seriously though, being the nearest port to Europe, Dover has seen millions of travellers in peace and war for over two thousand years. Not for nothing was it nicknamed Hellfire Corner in WW2.
Lovely adventure Alanna! I worked in Dover for a number of years and never felt unsafe, in fact I don't think it deserves its poor reputation. There are so many things to do and places to see that it is definitely worth a trip even if you don't visit the castle! My mother-in-law lived in Dover during WW11 right under the castle walls (in one of the houses near the B&B) She often spoke about the role of the castle then. Fascinating stuff! I agree Geoff, I think that every port has its issues, I've used several of them and not one has been a place I'd like to stay in, especially as there are so many people all trying to either enter or leave the country! But the towns attached to the ports are usually really nice places and have interesting histories!
Dover Museum. The Oldest sea going boat in Europe is there - The Bromze Age Boat. I worked at Dover Castle for 15 years and fully agree that an English Heritage membership is thoroughly worth the money . In the South East of England you are spoiled for choice - Walmer Castle and it’s beautiful gardens, Deal Castle, Battle Abbey (the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066) and many more. In my humble (and possibly biased ) opinion, Dover should be a World Heritage Site. As a military historian I can think of no other place on Earth that has had such a continuous history of fortification from the Iron Age to the Cold War. And iconic for our defiance against tyranny. The most dangerous place in Kent? Well, definitely if you wish to invade us. Love your work Alana. Good show! Carry on. 👍👍

In my experience the majority of people warning against visiting a particular neighbourhood/town/country have never been there. Dover's a port and therefore is likely to be a bit rough and ready. I visited Dover on a school trip many years ago. We stayed in Margate and one evening the teachers took us to a nightclub where the "entertainment" included a drag act, something us ten year olds had a struggle to comprehend.
I live in a little bit called Aycliffe, just outside Dover, we have sea views and Shakespeare Beach and very quiet up here. Loads of walkers go to Dover Priory to then walk from Dover to Folkestone, going past my house. Historically Dover is huge and many spots to explore. Scenery is beautiful around and in Dover. Western Heights is stunning with views across the harbour and views of France on a Clear day, today it’s 27c and the sky is so blue with turquoise sea, Dover is currently having a lot of upgrades, the new marina and little café to stop in.
Nice to see a different and pleasant perspective for my home town! Thank-you. To be honest, its not that dangerous/dodgy, I think there are just a lot of people that live here (mainly the wrong-uns) that complain about the place. On your next visit- see the drop redoubt, the roman painted castle, bronze age boat, the various ruins and parks that are free to visit...and also lots of diving in the channel if you are a suba-wreck fan.
English Heritage membership is definitely decent value if you plan to get out and about to several places. They often have discount codes too. I’ve only ever been to Dover to catch the ferry so this was a very informative vid. Thank you so much, Alanna!

I guess most of us Brits just see Dover as somewhere to get a ferry to la belle France for day trips or holidays, and that probably means most (me included) have never actually stopped to see what its like. I'd heard good things about the castle and tunnels and from what you say its obviously worth the trip though it may never reach the top of my list. Another great video, thanks Alanna.
I’m from Dover. The Roman Painted House is an archeological site of a Roman villa, from when the Romans first built the Quay in “Dovorium”. Also the Museum is fabulous, with Europe’s oldest Bronze Age sea-going boat which was excavated nearby and lots more.
If you had walked along the cliffs a bit you would have reached St Margaret's Bay, a lovely community, Peter Ustinov, Noel Coward and Ian Fleming lived there and Miriam Margoyles still does I think.

I'm not local but have worked all over Kent. There used to a great little shopping area just around the cruise terminal. Also Samphire Hoe is a 5 min rive out towards Folkestone. There is a memorial to Allied pilots there with full scale models of Spitfire and Hurricane. Then just on from there is Folkestone, where the best place to walk is The Leas.
We moved from Guildford to Dover in 79, have never regretted it and just love it here. The only bad thing is our rubbish Council who seem to consist of total loonys, and do nothing to better the Town.
You walked right past the White Horse pub, where many cross-channel swimmers from all over the world, including some record holders, have signed their names over inch of spare space on the walls. £23... that's iniquitous! Thank you for coming Alanna.
I am English and I like the way you are not just doing the pretty pretty villages and the seaside town beaches. We get more than enough of that it's good to see normal towns and things included.👍👍😁😁
The only reason to go to Dover is to stand on the cliffs and look across the channel and if you can see land you think it could worse we could be in France 🤣
The reverse is true. Energy price increase in France limited to four percent, lower inflation, no mass poverty, average family eight thousand pounds better off than in the UK. Britain is spiralling out of control as the next two years are about to show, with civil unrest very likely.
I've been to Dover a bunch of times... to catch a cross-channel ferry. I never even thought there might be cool things to see and do there. 😅 The castle looks well worth a visit! Thanks Alanna for showcasing yet more of the UK I never knew about.
Nice video. Last time we were in Dover we did the cliff walk. Of course I'd seen many pictures of the fabled cliffs of Dover but they are way more impressive in person. You don't get a good sense of how gigantic they are just from pictures
Those two aerial masts are the modern incarnation of the Chain Home radar system that was so important in WW2. The Bleriot memorial is lurking in the trees, not far from the castle walls. The old town hall and museum are worth a visit, too.
I visited Dover Castle several years ago and apart from the sheer size of the site, and the buildings ranging from ancient to modern, the thing I really enjoyed was their stunning exhibition on Operation Dynamo. Which was planned and controlled by a very able Royal Navy admiral from Dover Castle and was, in 1940, the seemingly impossible task of rescuing the British Army from defeat in France. In a hastily-organised armada of boats of every size, ranging from very small upwards. The operation is often referred to as the Miracle of Dunkirk, that being the place from where the soldiers were rescued. And against all the odds the operation was successful. Which is a very good thing because if, as expected, it hadn’t been, the Second World War would have ended right there and then, and the history of the western world would have been very, very different. For this reason, references to the ‘Dunkirk Spirit’ mean a great deal to us Brits…
So glad you visited Dover Castle, it used to be part of my job to look after the IT network there and many other sites but I visited there a few times. You could spend a full day just in the castle and the tunnels. Great channel
I’m sure the tickets were a lot less than £23 when I visited Dover Castle in 1994, but for some reason we got in for free. Not sure if it had something to do with it being “half term” - being American we didn’t know what that was, but found out it meant no school, and therefore plenty of kids available to run screaming through the castle. We enjoyed the views from the castle grounds, and we also visited the Roman Painted House that day. We had a pretty good time as I recall.
Dover Castle is amazing but it's the only thing to do in Dover unless you're getting a ferry. Most Dangerous town varies month on month but it's always East Kent or North Kent (places like Chatham or Folkestone)
You need to try Portsmouth then Winchester then New Forrest, so much history when England was divided into the 7 kingdoms Winchester was the capital of England so much Saxon and Viking history. New Forrest I called that because it’s all new trees as the previous tress was used to makes ships

i worked in dover for 6 years - whilst part of it are fantastic ( the castle and promenade are great ) the town centre does leave something to be desired - it does feel like the damage inflicted during the 2nd world war ( it did suffer shell and bomb damage ) has never been properly fixed ( walking down the shopping streets you can spot the gaps in the victorian street fronts caused by the war which have been replaced by 1970s buildings )
As you have proved Alanna, it's sometimes best to look beyond the naysayers & doom merchants & see for yourself. Everything we do in life has an element of risk but that shouldn't put you off enjoying your life, visiting different places & learning about a country's culture. Doer hS another Fort on the hills to the west only open twice a year but the outside can be walked around all year round. There is the Romam Painted house (in town). A bronze age boat in the museum in the Market Square. That's just for starters.
Nice to see you out and about Alanna. I have been to Dover a couple of times but didn't really know much about it. I did know that the Dunkirk evacuation Operation Dynamo in 1940 was coordinated by Admiral Bertram Ramsay and his staff from Dover Castle though. Also,(geek alert!) the 1971 Doctor Who story Mind of Evil was partly filmed there with the castle standing in for a maximum security prison. That's about the limit of my Dover knowledge...😂. Fun and informative video as always, thank you ☺👍
The cliffs are actually a nature reserve and you can see lots of interesting plants and wildlife. You can walk along to the tea room at the south foreland lighthouse, and to the pine gardens & museum at St Margaret's Bay. Other than that there's a couple of beautiful parks - Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens which are always nice to spend the day at. Sadly there's not a lot to do here even though the town has so much history!
Did my Army Training in Folkestone many many years ago..popped to Dover a few times.. it was an ok town. Loads of History .unfortunately a lot of the lovely old buildings have been bulldozed for some reason..
Great video Alanna! Dover does have some big social problems and it isn't just a weekend pub/club issue, it's there to be seen in the town centre during the daytime too. However, despite that and the lack of investment in the town, there is great history there and some of the grand old houses just outside the centre point to it's former military importance. Other than the castle, sea front & white cliffs all mentioned in the video, it has an interesting lighthouse a bit further along the cliffs or if you have a car, maybe visit Samphire Hoe - a nature reserve built on reclaimed land from the earth removed whilst building the Channel Tunnel. It is very peaceful and leads onto a beach at the end.
Nice video, as always! You mentioned the English Heritage membership which, as you said, basically pays for itself withn two or three visits. In a similar vein I'd draw attention to Railcards... I have a Senior Railcard (yes, I'm that old!) but I travel around the country a lot by train, including about once a month to London from Coventry to take in a gallery or museum (usually free, remember) The Railcard is thus terrific value for me but it's also worth noting that there's a wide range of them to suit various needs (e.g. Family Railcard) *and* you can hold it on your phone too. Keep on travelling, Alanna!
I suspect Mr and Mrs Naps have a two together railcard - or even their own each as they are still young. I think you can renew the 26-30 "millenium" railcard the day before your 30th birthday but only for a year.
Parts of my family used to build big freight clippers (sailboats) in Denmark and all their ships were painted in front of the White Cliffs of Dover. One of the pictures still hangs over the sofa at my parent's house. So from the youngest age I knew about Dover. Kind if weird :D Love the video and it looks pretty ok there honestly :)
Agree with all these comments, Dover Castle is an essential if anyone wants to see something brilliant in Kent. Have you ever thought of doing a day trip to France? Get in early and you can see so much of Calais in a day!
Hi Alanna, Thanks again for a really interesting video. Dover seems to look really nice from what I saw in your tour. When you were talking about how dangerous it is, I thought it would look really run down, but it looks very well maintained. The Dover Castle looks incredible and I love learning about history. I am definitely going to read up on the history of the castle, especially since you mentioned that it had something to do with Dunkirk.
Agree that entry to Dover Castle is expensive, but still worth it. There was a time many, many years ago where access to the castle grounds was actually free and you only had to pay if you wanted to go into the Keep. I guess the cost of the upkeep meant that they couldn't continue with that arrangement. Behind the castle is a monument marking the (supposedly) landing spot of Louis Bleriot, the first man to fly across the English Channel, which aviation enthusiast may wish to visit. Connaught Park is a 5 minute walk from the castle. Other parks include Kearsney Abbey and Russel Gardens, which are a couple of minutes from each other, but as they are on the outskirts of Dover, not really within walking distance. On the hill on the opposite side of the valley from the castle is the Western Heights. Up there you will find structures dating back to the Napoleonic wars and WWII. Perhaps not ideal for the average tourist but might be worth a visit by anyone who has an interest in those periods of history.
Over the scores of times I have been to England over the past 70+ years, including my six years at junior prep there, never once have I been to Dover, so many thanks for this interesting video. I love Canterbury, Rochester, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, and their surrounding areas, but everything in this video was new to me. Where next? Try Knowle Park.
I have being to Dover lots of times mainly to cross the channel as I did in June. I have visited Dover Castle where in one of the tunnels in 1940 Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay led Operation Dynamo the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Although you covered the castle you left out the Pharos (Roman lighthouse) which is much older. It's just visible in the background of some of your pictures, immediately adjoining the church at 14:59 in your video. There are very few substantially complete Roman buildings in Britain; this is one of them.
Having spent quite a bit of time sat in traffic jams around there it was a good call to use the train! Btw, loving the new timing of your uploads. It may not work for everyone but perfect for me as I end up watching content not long after finishing work rather than days later (and yes notifications are on!).

"Blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover" The only birds are the damn Gulls and they are grey and white but at a stretch might look bluish in certain light.

You're right about movies... Mel Gibson's Hamlet was filmed there, some of Age of Ultron, and the beheading scene from The Other Boleyn Girl - they often use the tower as a stand-in for the Tower of London. I was an extra in the Other Boleyn Girl, and got to see Natalie Portman beheading about 12 times lol

The Louis Bleriot monument is next to the castle, only if you're a fan of aviation - there's not much to see there... There's a narrow set of steps from the castle to the beach, well worth going down! The Roman painted house. The museum with it's iron age boat. Russel Gardens, and Kearsney Abbey are one train stop away. Western Heights on open days. The Grand Shaft - also only open occasionally.
You can actually hire Peverell’s Tower as a holiday let and have the castle to yourself after closing. Also, probably the safest place to stay in Dover !
Hey Alanna. Can't do the 5pm release on a Tues but I'm here now. It's always great to see you out and aboot. 😀 If I ever get to that area, I will be checking Dover Castle out as I love a good castle. Great video.
