I was always a Suzuka man, myself. The calm, collected, calculated, and cold exterior to be immediately destroyed by the fact that she still feels shame and wants to preserve her dignity was a good representation of a person who could hold their own in conversation and chaotic situations. Also she hot.
I take it he went to college pre-social media, such as myself. It was an era where you absolutely had to go out of your way or you would live a very lonely life in college.
Pro tip #1: When you're good at a subject, help other peeps, so when you're failing another, it'll be easier to suck up to them in turn. Pro tip #2: When there's an opportunity to get shitfaced drunk, take it. Always.
@Allan Tidgwell no, the space pirate faction themselves are very specifically futuristic Chinese Taoism. While other things may be informed by it being a japanese series, there's a very clear influence towards the Chinese side of things.
On god it is bro I haven’t even finished outlaw Star cause I cycle so many anime shows and movies at once I barely got 5 episodes on but I already love it 😂🤣💯
I'm the same way with ep 15. When gene hits his depression and truly thinks he is going to die and hurts those closest to him because he truly thinks that he doesn't have anything to live for. Then his friends show up to help him even though they may die too. That realization that you can never truly understand the value of your life because how others in your life value you. It hit home for me
@Captain Zorc the same thing as The man from Peru. Who fell asleep in his canoe. He dreamed about Venus. Grabbed his penis, And woke up with a handful of goo
My first spicy dreams as a kid were about her. It’s odd that I remember that. I think I was weirded out that it was a cat lady and that’s why I still remember it. Glad I wasn’t alone
"A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path, he will then have to choose. The boy doesn't always know. At some point, the boy then becomes an adult and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness forever will accompany this. He is confronted with the choice. When this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy. The boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: A boy has the right to dream, for those endless possibilities are stretched out before him. We must remember; All men were once boys. "
This quote is hauntingly appropriate to this video and I'm a bit surprised SEW didn't add it himself. Your reply is criminally underrated probably because most don't realize it's from Outlaw Star.
@gibbdude empathetize. The word you are looking for is empathize. Sympathize is if something bad happens and you really feel bad for that person. Empathize is "yeah I understand where you are coming from." It isn't even really agreeing, it's simply "oh yeah, I can see how you ended up feeling this way" Also, cowboy Bebop, is, in my opinion, a phase in people's life. At least it was for me. I quickly grew out of that "this is cool" factor and actually detest all the characters with an exception of Ed and maaaaaybe Jet. Maybe. Mushroom Samba is the only episode I can really watch without turning it off in disgust. The main characters are so toxic and never redeem themselves. That's simply my opinion though and hope people can respect that. Thanks for reading.
Yes! This so hard. I think one of the things that solidified it is that the crew of Outlaw Star felt like a group of companions and Bebop's felt like just some people who work together. Bebop IS the better series, but not the one I like more.
I didn't have the pleasure of watching this(or at least in detail for a whole episode) but I WILL ALWAYS remember this because of the Toonami Bump commerical called Dreams. One of the greatest and motivational videos Toonami graced us using various anime cleverly . If you haven't seen it, watch it now. It basically in a weird way....told me that Outlaw Star among the rest that were shown were a gem to anime/manga.
Oh my god dude, same. I used to always see this in that commercial and wonder why the heck it never actually showed (this was back when I was still in elementary school I think) because I thought it looked pretty cool.
He lives actually. In the very end of the episode it is shown. The assassin is so good that he faked his death just to play with them without killing and it's all out of his boredom I think or maybe pity.
but it shows exactly his point at the end, where every single moment or situation is different and some times we might enjoy different things depending on our place or mood in life.
I had to buy the box set to get the uncensored version and the hotsprings episode. i don't care, as a teen i needed my cat girl baps no matter the cost!
I remember back in the day, when I was a young whipper-snapper, seeing Aisha. Her in all her tanned, muscled, cat WOMAN glory and feeling that the game had now been changed.
In the same vein, when I was a tween i didn't know at the time that anime giys could be as hot as Gene, because HOT DAMN. No wonder he got Animerica's fan vote for sexiest anime character.
Ah the one of Space Western Trilogy get a rep. I always called Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star as the Space Western Trilogy as go to anime recommends
The Holy Trinity of Merica! anime. If I could imprint the stereotype of what an American is to other countries... they'd be Gene Starwind. Brash, ballsy, confident and cunning as hell.
Outlaw Star will always be one of my favorite classic anime, especially because of Toonami and their promos of the anime. Really miss it and will try to find a way to watch it again soon. It is that anime that does live in the shadow of Cowboy Bebop but I feel each should stand side by side for bring such vibrant and detailed worlds and personal stories within the context of space outlaws. Also no one will judge you Super Eyepatch Wolf Aisha is a true beauty
The Blu-ray collection is still available for a good price, and it’s available for streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime. Don’t let your dreams be dreams!
oh man! you speaking of the toonami promo's brought back all those memories, you're absolutely right! The toonami promo's were amazing for this show. That's the one thing you dont see on the blue ray collection, but still worth getting.
I’m glad someone else appreciates this show for what it is as a whole , a genuine masterpiece, that only needed 1 season to explain it , excellent music and artwork that just felt ..real
I always loved the creativity and fun the series seemed to have. Spaceships arm-wrestling with each other? Taoist space pirate wizards? Bullets which are just containers for magic spells? And all that creativity comes in a really beautiful, well-told package to boot.
I remember the relationship between Harry and Melfina really struck me as a kid watching it. This emotionally unstable man trying desperately to convince this woman he’s obsessed with that they should be together really stuck out to me as a kid and helped me realize growing up that people can be the same as you but at the same time on the exact opposite end of what you need to grow as a person in life
@@alakazellae-commerce9627 Yeah, that one was "Space is the Place". I'd say those two and "Mad Rhetoric [Walking Stick]" were my favorite ad spots from Toonami. If you ever get a chance and find the videos/interviews, I'd suggest listening about all the things that went down with Toonami. All the crazy work they had to do to make it happen, and the real passion you could tell went into it from them.
I had kind of forgotten how good this show was. You're right about how it was instantly overshadowed by Cowboy Bebop, but it definitely had its own identity. I remember enjoying it more than Bebop. My favorite episode was the one with the cats with its heartbreaking story about Jim Hawking being completely oblivious about what's happening.
There is a particular energy to those 90's anime series that has never really been replicated. My personal favourite of the era is probably Cyber City Oedo 808.
I don't know, everytime someone says something about their hard teenage years I feel like I am at that point now in my (mid) twenties. This quarantine has only solidified that again. Can I find some real real friends, a purpose in life, a girlfriend... I really don't know. Not even if I am more in an Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop situation, it feels like the worst parts of both of them. Thank you for this video! I know this RU-vid world just consists of parasocial relationships. but this made me feel something.
I like outlaw star, i never liked Bebop and just found it depressing. Outlaw star is about the journey and not the destination and living your life the way you want for your own reason. you can find real friends and a girlfriend but you have to start doing what you desire discover who you are and start living your own way once you do that everything you want will come to you trust me. anyway have faith and take the first step, thank you for the comment now start to live your life the way you were meant to.
I would not say it’s a given that everyone will achieve their dreams simply by identifying them or by pining for them. I don’t say this to be mean, but strangers die, unloved, forgotten, ignored, and even senselessly or needlessly. Walk out there into the world and start doing social. If you think youtube is parasocial. OR Make REAL connections on RU-vid. And recognize them as REAL social connections (just with different characteristics) and don’t call these “para”social. Or. Ignore me cuz I’m just a internet voice and could be a person who realized their dreams and is now almost done with law school, or could be a Russian bot farm worker at a bank of 300 iPhones posting comments Putin told me to.
@@KallusGarnet Bebop is supposed to be depressing or rather melancholic. Only if you open yourself to this void you can really understand its beauty ^^
Outlaw Star was one of the classics I would love to watch in Toonami as a kid, but as I got older, I forgot about its existence until a few years ago where I decided to binge watch some episodes. I'd personally recommend it for someone new to anime.
I didn't watch it until two years ago since I didn't have Toonami as a kid and live out in a remote part of Alaska so I went in blind. I came out with it as one of my all time favorites, it's an anime that is timeless and definitely one to show someone who doesn't like anime and wants something that'll blow their socks off. Both this and Records of Lodoss War
I absolutely loved this show and while bebop focused more head-on approaches to dealing with personal demons; this show helped show that even with personal demons you still got your life to live and world ahead of you. All you need to do is go for it and dont be held back. This short review hits exactly why I loved this series far better than i could ever explain myself. If you liked cowboy bebop please give this an independent viewing as itself. If you can do that you see that it actually brings something else entirely to the table just in a slightly similar setting. Outlaw star is still one of my favorite series. You get comfortable in goofy hyginks and then suddenly blindsided by intense personal confrentaion that was actually always there part of the characters. Its just something they don't like about themselves and keep it to themselves except in moments where it becomes too much and it explodes out. If nothing else watch ep 15. It had a huge impact on me and helped me explain the deep root of my past depression perfectly.
Love episode 15 and the little existential funk gene is in that ep. When he tries to get with Mel and then is just lying awake with the shadow of the window blinds on his face - very artistic shot. And the scene he has at the bar with leilong is awesome. That’s why I love this show - it’s balance. It had moments like that juxtaposed with silly moments or over the top action. But when it got sort of semi-serious is probably when I liked it the most. It also fills me with a sense of adventure like no other show does.
Dang, I got so hooked on the joke idea that he never gets over his anxiety. I love when stories play on the grand fantasy setting and hyperfocus in on something, and I was pretty hype for that hypothetical ngl. HOWEVER I also love me some goofy space action too so this also slaps
Honestly when he said the joke scenario I got really invested. The moment he said that Gene never leaves his planet due to anxiety, it instantly peaked my interest (more so than the actual show, not saying it didn't peak my interest as well.) I instantly thought that this show might be something of a great deconstruction. Something like a solemn lament which shows the results when you are too afraid to follow your ambitions and give in to your inner anxieties. What happens when the protagonist of the anime isn't someone who can overcome their challenges and regrets their inability to overcome the obstacles, but tragically making excuses to justify why he couldn't. But at the same time I thought that a show named "outlaw star" wouldn't be like that and so I instantly came up with another scenario. That this show was going to tell us about how a character felt anxiety and gave up on their dream despite fighting their anxiety, but eventually quits, and (while tragic) maybe that's not so bad. Maybe this character eventually makes his own fulfilling life on the planet in spite of his younger dream and starts to appreciate the life on his planet while still carrying the sober, tragic thought in the back of his mind about a "what if" scenario but realizing he gave it his all. He isn't successful in the normal definition anime creates, but he is content with his life. He is a star but not in the normal sense, instead he is an "outlaw star" ya know. When he said that it was a joke part of me was instantly disappointed. I still watched the video though, and this seems like a good show. I just got my hopes up for a joke ;D. I guess coming up with these kinds of stories makes sense with my tastes though... Fate/Zero is my favorite after all and Kaiji is 2nd.
"Aisha's wild, untamed bangs." ...Oh, wait. What? Oh, you were talking about her HAIR. Of course. Because obviously there's not any other, um, prominent physical trait you might be focused on whenever she's onscreen. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *shifty eyes*
Praying for your anxiety to lessen whenever it can. I giggled loudly when you mentioned liking Aisha was fine and my wife came from the other side of the house to check on me. 👀
Wow, I watched this as a teenager and rewatched it again a couple years ago and it's still my favorite anime. So happy to see people talking about this.
"Jim make friends with mysterious girl on a space station before the two go their separate ways, forever" "bittersweet episode" c'mon man. give that episode some more credit
"You gonna just keep running away?" "Just keep running away? I'm not running..." Outlaw Star was the second anime I ever finished after Yu Yu Hakusho and what an anime it was.
I was obsessed with her too 😂😂😂 Even when her appearance faded from my mind over time, the name, Aisha Clan Clan, always stuck with me. Anyway, I’ve had the show on Blu-ray for about a year, just have to sit down and watch it again.
John showing up in his videos is becoming my favorite parts of his videos ^^ Also I’m glad I actually had the pleasure of watching this series when Toonami started Airing it a few years back! It was a wonderful watch that honestly was great to just sit and get lost in the mood of each episode even if very little was happening Action Wise... I should’ve bought the Blu-Ray when I had the chance. Also yes the Muscular Cat Girl is The Best Character no Shame let us all Live Dammit!
My favorite anime ever. Watching the original full run on DVD in Japanese as a child changed me forever. Not only did this really introduce me to the emotional storytelling power of anime, it also really resonated with me as a young man veering on teenagerhood/adulthood. Incredible, incredible series.
Hey Eyepatch Wolf… thanks. In the midst of this crisis, I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety attacks bad enough to leave me dry-heaving into a sink, and I have felt very alone. But for 21 minutes and 12 seconds just now, it felt like someone cared and was trying to pick me up and show me how to be okay, acknowledging their own struggles and pointing to another, entertaining success story of overcoming anxiety. And it might seem stupid, but by the end of this video that feeling of being cared for and understood left me in tears. So thank you. It means a lot, and I’m gonna start watching Outlaw Star tomorrow
Like ten / twenty years from now there's going to be people posting "Why You Should Watch Super Eyepatch Wolf" episodes by people who were, as teenagers, deeply affected by your essays on media.
You accurately brought into words what I've always felt about Outlaw Star. Growing up DBZ was always my favorite anime, but looking back. I found myself never wanting to miss Outlaw Star. It holds a special place in my heart. I dont have a 2nd favorite anime because it is a toss up between multiple animes.
@@komojo omg, that´s a sin! I didn´t know that since I live in South America (we didn´t get to watch Outlaw Star in Cartoon Network, we had to download the show using dial up haha)
The only reason I know of the opening and how good it is is because when I was 10 I got one of the original eng dubbed video cassettes gundam wing episodes like 1 thru 4 or 5 and one of the movie adds oddly enough was for outlaw star and the opening played during its ad. I got the cassette I think after outlaw star aired on toonami which I know from the day time block and I think here in nyc it also aired after they were finished airing gundam wing. Dont quote me because I cant remember much about airing schedules. But anyway the opening played durring that ad and it got me excited for outlaw star and for some reason even as a kid I registered that as the theme for outlaw star for some reason. Therefore when I got into listening to music I eventually looked up the outlaw star theme and added it to my playlist. Sorry for the essay.
Nah it was definitely censored when they first showed it in the US. They changed the blood to robot juice in a lot of the fights and Melfina was always in shorts and a tube top.
This was one of the seminal anime of my early anime fandom. I honestly don't think I've seen anyone even mention it on the internet in nearly a decade. Thanks for this.
It's been three seconds since posting, i really don't even need to know what Outlaw Star is, all I need to know is SEW recommends it, he's been trustworthy ever since Baki as far as I'm concerned
I think his Gantz recommendation kind of failed, at least on me though I still enjoyed it and breezed through the first half of the manga, Baki didn't interest me. But yeah, usually his recommendations are dope all the way since HxH.
I wish the app Tubi (app) would add Outlaw Star episodes and the following anime episodes: - * Trigun - Big O - Blue Gender - Sorcerous Stabber Orphen - Reign: The Conqueror Outlaw Star an anime I watched as a kid, yet have vivid memory what it was even about. * not the animated film “Trigun: Badlands Rumble”
Outlaw Star definitely is a hidden gem its art style was memerizing. The intro and voice over monologues still hit to this day over the many years. I thought I was the only one with the shots for Aisha Clan-Clan but wait, you also liked Juri of YuYu Hakusho! We got the same fetish I guess because the YuYu Hakusho ringside girls are lookers too.
Hey hey, do you want to laugh? Do you want to cry? Do you want to see a great representation of the typical "I will not kill" shonen rule? Trigun. I think you'd really enjoy it.
Okay, as someone who’s never watched Outlaw Star, I would LOVE to see an anime like this where he doesn’t overcome his fear of space, like the hypothetical presented. Seriously, picture an entire series where you see all these crazy things happen...but only from a distance. Our main character is just a random extra in the crazy action space anime. He’s the bystander in One Punch Man. He’s a regular citizen in Star Wars. He witnesses all of these crazy, world changing things, maybe even caused by a hero that would be considered the main protagonist of his own series, but he never directly gets involved. Maybe he gets close, the hero quickly whisks him away from danger, but that’s it. Idk, that kind of show just sounds interesting to me.
Max Ducks not an anime or manga but the series “Marvels” from Marvel Comics is very similar. It is about a reporter who sees events in the Marvel Universe from a normal person’s perspective and is really well written and drawn/painted.
Max Ducks ...suuure, but it’s hard to make this kind of story entertaining. I mean, I’d love to see something like that but if the whole story is just about some random dude, nothing else, then what’s the point? I want to see a STORY, where something happens and events occur and we get a conclusion, NOT a show about some dude who’s on the side doing nothing.
@@louisaniathemagnificent8246 what if the plot revolved around the normal person. it's a surprisingly realistic story about a person strugglin to make ends meet in a crazy world. imagine the main character quits his office job in order to pursue his dream of becoming a small shop owner. he finally gets thing running, customers flood in and business is booming. then it gets caught in the middle of a big fight scene between hero a and villain b. the main character gets saved but he witnesses all the hard work he put into his shop just get obliterated. following that is an arc of him trying to get back together, interspersed with random acts of kindness from his loyal customers.
This was my favorite anime for the longest time and will always hold a special place. Your story of connection to and disconnect from Outlaw Star is very familiar. Thanks for making this video and sharing your experience. You're doing good stuff here. Truly appreciate your work! We'll get through this.
When you're trying to enjoy a Super Eyepatch Wolf video on Outlaw Star and outta nowhere he gives you PTSD flashbacks of painting hundreds of color swatches in art college.
There seems to be an error in the description, “But unfortunately, but here’s me talking about Outlaw Star”. Granted, I haven’t seen Outlaw Star so maybe it’s a reference I don’t get.
This ending really hits hard. I'm an essential employee that works in the health care and nights. So, maybe I can't relate but I feel like I've been isolated forever. Quarantine has been strenuous on everyone, but I know we are capable to survive. Instead of just staying home, I've just been given a bigger cage. Following my narrowing route to and from work, rarely seeing the light of day, to systematically cycling through my PPE.. and quarantining my clothes for years, much less 2 months.. Freedom does feel like a dream. Outlaw Star has always held a place in my heart. From the adventurous and motivational opening to the somber and reflective credit(s). Thanks for distilling it into words. and to everyone, again, I do believe we will all get through this.
+Ishima O I'm an essential worker too. I'm a cashier at my local grocery store. I have been feeling drained and overwhelmed since this whole thing started, and now customers are dropping the polite act and cussing out me and my coworkers when they don't get their way, and excusing it with "being frustrated" with quarantine, yet us grocery store workers aren't extended that same sympathy as the customers because in their eyes, "it's just a part of the job, we have to take it with a smile and thank them for keeping us in business during quarantine". It's also extremely frustrating having people telling me to "be grateful that I get to leave my home" and that it's a "luxury". Like, no. It's not. If I had the option, I would stay home for my safety and the safety of my family, because both my brother and I are grocery store workers, and our mother is high risk because of chronic illnesses. She has also had two surgeries done in the last six years (two total knee replacements on both knees), so that opens her even more to diseases because if bacteria gets in her system and isn't treated, it could kill her. But I don't get that option because we live in California, which is a super expensive state, so the only money that comes in to pay for bills, food, and to keep a roof over our head is my dad who makes five figures and half of my minimum wage paycheck-- it's still a struggle. (Also, and there's no nice way to say this, but my mother is an emotionally abusive parent. She's more than happy to put my health at risk, because making sure that my father takes half of my paycheck for them is the bigger priority over my wellbeing.) You've described the situation perfectly. As essential workers, there is no "freedom" in leaving the house to go to work, because that's the only place we're allowed to go. We're just moving around in a bigger cage.
@@cannibalisticrequiem I do respect your work. Everyone out here there is pushing so much weight rn. I can't imagine getting through this without getting even a coffee or just a bag of beans. I have been doing my mother's groceries as soon I leave work, just so she doesn't have to go out. I've been lucky to only see a few customers disregarding the "mask" rule.. but when I do it's unsettling at the disregard.
I loved this show this was the show that got me into anime as a kid. We all have that many form the 90s say Dragonball or Z/ For me it was Outlaw Star and funny enough I just rewatched this series last week. It's 5 ad I got work soon but when I saw this pop up I stopped getting ready haha have to watch.
heyy Super Eyepatch Wolf just noticed you highlighted my remark form the other day before work. yea I loved this video, I watch all of your videos but Outlaw Star is special to me. Like I said it was the Anime that got me into anime and we all have that one show and I never watched Cowboy bebop and for a silly reason. Because everyone told me back in the day that is was better then outlaw Star. That was their favorite space time anime and Trigun over Rurouni Kenshin.
But wanted to thank you for highlighting my response and paying attn to your youtube fans send me your patreon link. I want to help out and support your channel cause I've watched every episode and video I come across. And honestly it's time I support you, you earned it.
I'll say it for us all, this is the best anime ever made this provided so many years of entertainment. The most rewatch able anime ever. I remember also the philosophical nature of the narrations and genes inner monoluge made me look at my lifes journey in a more progressive and positive manner. Just amazing.
The way you end videos always hits like a truck, I always end up just sitting still for a minute after finishing the video contemplating what I just heard, relating it to my own life and experience. For some reason I always seem to empathize with the points you make and I don't have that feeling with many creators on this platform, so I guess what im trying to say is just, thanks.
Watching the scenes where Gene runs through the leyline using the special caster shells is still so awesome to watch. Also the entire Leilong vs the crew sequence is amazing.
I prefer Outlaw Star over Cowboy Bebop. One of my favorite anime right now has 2 seasons and is called THE OUTCAST. Well, it has a third that is Chinese only. If you like tournaments and awesome abilities you will love this. I love the way the Story flows in both seasons, with a certain comical young lady who can beat anyone, and will literally dig your grave.
I think Outlaw Star has infinitely more rewatchability to it than Cowboy Bebop, because of how light-hearted it is. To this day I still to back and rewatch the entire series all the way through at least once a year because it is such a fun ride from start to finish. Cowboy Bebop is still great and deserves its place in pop culture. But Outlaw Star you can enjoy no matter who you are, or where you are. Outlaw Star is the Star Wars to Cowboy Bebop's Star Trek.
Martian Successor Nadesico is an interesting comparison, since both that and Outlaw Star have wide swings in tone. But Nadesico does it jarringly to deliberately invoke some hard mood whiplash, while Outlaw Star makes it feel natural. I appreciate both shows for making the big range in tone and mood work.
@@SnakebitSTI they were both part of the same hour long block that used air at 3 in the morning. It was a balls because i had to be up at 8 the next morning. On the flipside i only had to wait one day between episodes. If you havent seen vandred you should check it out if you liked nadesico.
@@macker33 Outlaw Star aired in 1998. Anime was definitely a thing in the West, though not as popular as today. And the Internet was most definitely a thing. In the US, Outlaw Star first aired on Cartoon Network in 2001. DVR was still rare at the time, but VCRs were still common.
