Flutter is a popular development framework for creating cross platform mobile applications and web applications, but is it the best framework to learn? Is the job market big enough for flutter developers? In this video I give my thoughts on a viral Twitter/Reddit post where someone talked about how difficult it has been for them to get a job as a Flutter developer.

Fun fact: In the real world, the more popular a framework is, the more competitors there will be. So it is not always true that "the more popular the framework, the easier it is to get a job.''

Is there a lack of developers or to much of them in a specific language? Basic supply and demand should be your indicator.
@johan2371
@johan2371 8 месяцев назад
@@rulesmen My first comment is really about basic supply and demand lol I have no choice but to tell you the same thing over and over again. I think arguments based on objective data about supply and demand are useful. I don't think that's included in either this video or your comment.
@rulesmen
@rulesmen 8 месяцев назад
Let me rephrase it. Is there a lack / too much of developers in terms of demand. Price of freelancers or salaries based on language are usually a good indicator.
@johan2371
@johan2371 8 месяцев назад
@@rulesmen "Are there too few or too many developers to meet the demand?" I don't have an answer to this question, nor do I have *objective* data to support any claim on this matter. Do you have such data? If so, I would like to see it. No *objective* evidence is provided in this video at all. To my knowledge, there appears to be no *objective* data available. If a single post on Reddit is considered *objective* verification, then anything can be asserted as true. "freelancers or salaries based on language are usually a good indicator." You are free to choose which indicator you trust, but it is only your indicator, it doesn't matter to me. Let me just ask this: If a job seeker's technology stack is React Native, can they easily get a job even if they are less skilled? Do you think that it is impossible to get a Flutter job in 2023, no matter how skilled a job seeker is in Flutter? It's ridiculously obvious, but in the end it comes down to the ability of the job seeker. It would be a different story if Flutter jobs really didn't exist at all, but that's not the case in the real world.
@h50896
@h50896 Месяц назад
I really feel that this idea of prioritizing technologies based on the job market leaves out the role of a developer to understand current developments and making an impact on the choice of technologies themselves once they are employed. While you can work as a programmer, programming is still not fundamentally just a grunt job; it's a skill. You can certainly use that skill professionally, but if you have the ambition to excel at it, then you can't just consider yourself on the receiving end of someone else's dictates. You will be deciding the tech stack at some point. You will be introducing ideas from one technology to another. You will be inventing things yourself, for crying out loud. Way too much top-down thinking going on here, in my not-so-humble opinion.

@@TerriTerriHotSauce I guess you can find plenty of videos comparing both. To me, the main different is avoid JS in mobile. It's simple. Dart is a new language which brings many good things and avoid the JS mess. I've been using JS for 13 years and I prefer Dart. The documentation and hot reload is also key here. After that you can compare speed, apk size, etc. But I think that doesn't really matter that much.

I agree with you in this video. Whilst it's true that you can use any programming language to build anything (mostly), if you are trying to get a job the best thing to do is to look at the job requirements at the company you want to work with and learn that technology first! Yes you should have transferable knowledge about software development from any framework or tool but generally speaking employers would prefer to hire someone who is proficient in their tech stack and thus will be productive as soon as possible as opposed to having to invest further resources to train the new dev in order to be productive on the team. Personally, I like flutter quite a bit and think its cool, however if I want a job as an Android developer the best way to get that job, by far, is to learn Kotlin and become proficient with it as that's what the job market demands.

@@Mo7ammad_7 It really depends on where you live because some places want more Flutter whereas other places want more Kotlin developers. The advice I would give you is this: look at the job boards for your area and search "android developer", then if you see that the majority of the jobs require Kotlin then I would advise you to spend more time learning Kotlin, if it is the case that you really do want those jobs. However, if you only want a job in Flutter then search for jobs with Flutter and keep on spending more time learning and applying your knowledge of Flutter.

This video is exactly what I was talking to my friends some days ago, and I relate with 100% of this video. I work as a Vue developer and I've been studying and creating Flutter apps since last year. Learned a lot of animations, styles, DB integration, state management, and yet I couldn't get a job, which is my dream to work as a mobile developer. But I know that the main problem here is the lack of flutter jobs. I would say that the reason for this is because flutter is relatively new, so the cost for the companies to rebuild their apps/systems would be big. And of course, there are more native stack jobs like Kotlin or Swift if compared to Flutter, like 3 Kotlin jobs for 1 Flutter job. Of course, I changed my focus from Flutter to a Native stack, so I started to study Kotlin, which has been very fun and easy to learn, but I must be honest and say that I'd love to work with Flutter.

Kotlin is behind in Android development?? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.. It's better to shut your mouth if you don't know anything. Kotlin is now the first language for native Android developers plus most of the new features of Jetpack are only supported for Kotlin. You can't use Coroutine, Jetpack Compose, or state management inbuilt libraries of Android development and dependency injections libraries using Java. Plus Kotlin multi-platform is looking promising for the future for developing Android, iOS, desktop, Web apps...

I think the last point is of essence here: Don't focus on a framework or programming language - instead, focus on the essentials, architecture, problem-solving, algorithms, base-structures, UI/UX, etc. This will make you a good developer regardless of the framework your are most proficient in at the moment. The trends and syntax will change with time, but your ability to adapt and apply core concepts to any environment will stay with you forever. If you have a good understanding of the fundamentals, you will easily learn any new framework your company/job market requires you to, or that you wish to try out for yourself. :)

Allow me to respectfully critique. I will number them for clarity. 1. This advice is only appicable in the extremely particular, short-term case of someone with no pre-existing programming skills deciding to learn only one technology to land their first job in programming some time in the future, after having learned said language. This scenario only happens once in any developer's life - at most - and only if they didn't learn programming in school or as a hobby before deciding to go professional. So the advice may be sound in that extremely particular circumstance, but it completely misses the mark for almost anyone who might view this video and certainly for anyone who is already a programmer, whether a hobbyist or a professional. Choosing what to learn for your first programming job without prior programming experience is a niche circumstance. 2. Companies don't only hire for a particular tech stack. In fact, many employers specifically tell applicants that they DO NOT need to already know the very specific technology that they have chosen, as long as they know software development or have the appropriate education/experience. This is because these technologies have vastly more in common than what sets them apart. No one in their right mind would turn down a Java or PHP programmer for a C# position or vice versa (absent special circumstances). If you know Flutter, you'll pick up React in no time and vice versa (although Flutter to React will be frustrating because the JavaScript/TypeScript world is such a mess). If you know Java, you basically already know C#, you'll pick up Scala or Kotlin literally over a weekend, Python will seem like formal English and PHP will just seem like the 70's called and wanted their function names back. Once you know 2-3 languages - as any hobbyist or graduate should already know, AT LEAST - you can learn most other languages literally by just using them. Please believe me: If you intend to base your career on becoming an expert in one specific technology, you will stagnate in a few years. Our craft is almost entirely composed of learning new things, constantly. This is not a job that you learn for once and just keep doing over and over for years or decades. 3. Even at the same employer over a long period of time, the tech stack will change. If not, they're stagnating. And then it's actually YOUR JOB, as a developer (not just as a manager) to know the pros and cons of alternatives and be able to advise management, as well as senior developers, on what to change and why. This is not just a senior role, this is part of software development. --- And now for some better advice --- If you want to become a developer... DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT limit your applications to companies explicitly detailing technologies that you already know. Our craft is almost entirely composed of learning. You will learn at that job, you will run into technologies that you don't understand and will have to pick up on the fly. Embrace it. Love it. Of course you need to prioritize your time, but don't choose technologies based on what lands someone with no prior programming experience their first job.

Been working as a flutter dev for past 2.5 years. The place where flutter shines is when you arent exactly building somthing close to the hardware which most software today backed by cloud is true for 95 percent of all apps.the declarative UI , simple syntax and low turnaround time for some of the most impressive uis make flutter an excellent choice for startups. Established companies have the time and effor to invest in native development , even startups do later move on to native. As a top i would say learn native first. If you build a listview in native and the same list view in flutter you would embrace and understand why flutter males sense for UI but is a lot of hassle if hardware level interactions are required.

If you live in a country with ample job opportunities for native developers, teaching yourself Flutter might not be the wisest choice. Flutter presents substantial job prospects in the Middle East and middle-income or low-income countries, due to its affordability and versatility. In contrast, if you reside in a high-income country like the United States, it might not be the most practical decision. In such countries, businesses are willing to pay native developers generously for successful and seamless solutions, making Flutter less essential when resources are not a constraint
