In this video we get a small insight from the Dr650 Guru Vince Strang. We find out what he thinks about the Re-Jetting/ air box hacking/slide drilling modification offered by pro cycle, JD jetting and more. We talk about some negatives and how to truely increase the power of your DR650
If your mechanically minded and enjoy the work, it definitly can be done well as a close friend of mine has done.
This video is probably more accurate for the Australia spec Carb as opposed to the US. I am no expert, just my opinion at the end.

All makes sense to me. I have experience on many types of engines/ carbies and have to agree with your reasoning. I have had my stock engined DR in the exreme outback in Australia on long trips. I have shipped my DR to New Zealand for a private tour and did a few thousand km. Mountain roads and low lands. No trouble. My opinion - leave it alone- you are likely to just chase your tail. Just enjoy the ride on this great motorcycle.

Interesting theories from Vince. I've found my DR has alot of popping on deaccel with an open pipe. Have a jet kit on order - Barry from cross training enduro seems to think otherwise. If an engine is running lean out of the factory, and you put bigger jets in it you can get better fuel economy as the engine is running more efficiently. I have a 2012 model DR and will post up my results :)

In the U.S. the bike is just toooo restricted and must be opened up. Even if you don’t need the power going one size on the jets will make the engine run much cooler which adds to the longevity of the engine. I do agree it is a great bike with a great factory set in some countries just not the U.S.

I’ve never heard of oil dilution problems with the DR. That should only occur if the rings weren’t bedded in correctly. I fitted the Procycle 790 kit and it transforms the bike on the road, much better acceleration for overtaking and uphill. Really hurts the fuel consumption but I don’t cross the Simpson, and fitted a 25 L tank. Worst standard suspension of any bike I’ve owned, life threatening to be blunt. They won’t be sold soon, due to new rules re ABS.

love your vid, tough one coz as you intimated it ain't so simple an issue. The stirrer in me cant help but poke a bit of fun as well as thoughts (no offence, I actually do run stock carb / snorkel in, but with a straight through muffler. I would only ever adjust jets if the range of conditions i'm likely to encounter / FAR warranted it, not because someone told me what the right jet size is). Best leave stock? Sure, why not, trust the Suzuki experts; after all they based the DR engine on the Otto cycle! Those in the know may remember Toyota's famous "Otto cycle" / "O2 advantage" campaign of the 1990's and how good those engines performed in motorsports! But why not modify it (IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Even something simple isn't: Is a richer pilot jet preferable to a standard size with a tweak to the mixture screw??? ). And there's more chance of oil dilution from a conservative one size fits all stock bike setup than an individually calibrated modified setup. The DR's carb has been designed and built to a set of priorities and targets of the whole system (reliable, quiet, smooth, safe, inexpensive, compact, warrantiable motor). Unfortunately, it doesn't match what some riders want so it's understandable getting the throttle to open quicker without bogging, and not having the overall airflow overly baffled (restricted), will be sought; but lets face it even the stock settings / setup are only a touch more conservative a compromise of exactly the same things anyway and the mods are hardly radical by comparison. And sure, the mods can't provide miracles but extra air / fuel at proper FAR is still extra power; I'm sure anyone that understands the fluid mechanics and thermodynamics of it all could correctly explain why compression ratios, valve size/lift/duration etc ultimately determine the potential pumping capacity / power whilst someone who knows their mechanical engineering could point out the longevity limitations of the 40+ year old mechanical / material/cooling design. Hmmm, come to think of it, more valve duration means more power less fuel efficiency ; is that a good mod??? I'm looking forward to catching up with your why you shouldn't revalve your DR650 suspension. And if anyone actually reads this and has revalved their shock and it works well, please message me the shim stack so i can give it a try.

Agree 100%. Only adjustments needed are to turn the fuel screw out 1.25 to 1.50 turns from fully seated and shim the fuel needle .030 inches to fix the factory lean pollution control tune. The shim removes the mid range surging and the enriched fuel screw adjustment removes the inconsistent fall to idle when rolling off throttle on different temperature days. It removes the ultra lean factory tune.

What exactly would a person in the US need to do to get their DR650 carb to Australian stock specs? What are the stock jet sizes?
@unbuckledadventures
@unbuckledadventures 2 года назад
As far as I know … The stock jet in Australia is a 140 main and 42.5 pilot.. the key difference is the needle.. the US has a different needle clip in a fixed position, the Aus/Canada/UK needle has different need with an adjustable clip(5 slots to adjust) Use this link for better description dr650.zenseeker.net/Carburetor.htm I am told the airscrew port is blocked on US carbs and can be drilled out . Not 100% sure though I as per VSM changed to a 45 pilot jet as it runs smoother and starts easier , less backfiring with my TKP exhaust Jet needle in Australia is 6F19 adjustable Part number 13332-32E00

I don't cut my airbox. At sea level, I just pulled the snorkel, installed upgraded filters, installed an extended idle-mix screw, and installed adjustable overseas/KTM needles. At higher altitudes, I can pull the sidecover off of the airbox and adjust the idle-mix screw. For extreme altitude changes, I could adjust the needle by clip position or shim. Although coming from a motocross background I enjoy riding and tinkering in equal degree the effort and cost involved negates the improvements, unless you are said tinkerer. It requires riding in varying conditions, noting and recording in a log and then diagnosing then changing and repeat. Any hardware mods will put you back a few steps again. how does gas dilute oil in the engine?
@unbuckledadventures
@unbuckledadventures 2 года назад
As you would probably know, it gets sprayed above the cylinder in the bore every forth Stoke so that it can ignite I think I believe on an engine that is running rich especially in a cold engine, excess fuel can condense on the cylinder walls where it dissolves with the thin film of oil that has be resting there . The oil grips on the marks honed into the bore and as the piston sweeps down it drags the oil mixed with fuel with it .. it is minimal but with high revs will occur 1000’s of time per min and more .. this could happen with normal jetting as well if tuned to rich… My understanding of it is rudimentary but I believe oil dilution can be a problem in all vehicles

I agree to disagree. My new DR650SE (Canada) has a very bad off idle stumble and very poor mid range power, especially when trying to hold a specific speed. Let alone the sketchy throttle control ability. Basically on and off. All this forces me to run at higher RPM and higher RPMS for taking off from a start. What does all this equal.... inefficiency and excessive fuel consumption, also all this aids developing bad habits. An off factory tune is required, at least in North America, especially for carburated bikes. In fact, he said it himself. Australia has more lax emission laws than North America..... so for us, proper tuning is a big deal.....

@@unbuckledadventures I was only getting 16kpl when I bought my DR which has a full staintune system. It had a 145 main in it. I was lucky to get 350 to 400kms out of the 25L Acerbis. I'm currently running a 155 mains and 45 pilot but am going to put a 47.5 pilot in like I did on my last DR. I cut the spring, D shaped the white washer on the needle so it sits down in the seat, drilled an extra hole in the top of the slide, drilled a 50 mm hole in the top of the air box as far away from the carbie breather as possible and I think I put the needle in the fourth groove. Remember these settings are with a full Staintune system and a foam aftermarket air filter ( Funnelweb ). I also ground the needle down to a 1mm point from about 20mm from the sharp end of the needle. There are different levels of tune depending on what you have. For example if you have a stock exhaust you aren't going to get the benefit compared to having a slip on or full aftermarket exhaust. I've bought plenty of stuff off Vince so not knocking him. Everyone has an opinion and I'm just going on my real world experience. I can't imagine there's been 100's of people getting their jetting wrong but who knows. You would be best contacting Gordon on ADVrider. His user name is 0405canvet. He's just over the Queensland border and he's the one who developed the BST Magic. Here's a video and a link on DRRIDERS. The first video explains the procedure better. If you not competent/confident it's probably best to leave it alone which is probably why so many people have a problem. Saying that it's not hard to do . No bike is the same so I'm guessing people do the mod expecting it to be perfect first time ( my first DR mod was perfect first time luckily ) but you may have to tweak the needle or jets one size either direction to get spot on and they probably don't have the knowledge to know which way to go or change too many things at once. It really isn't hard. drriders.com/bst-magic-stock-carb-mods-dr650-derestriction-inst-t16700.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aN1aU0G4YQE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z7GcNdlDwdk.html

Thank you.. good to hear yours is running well and interesting to hear your fuel consumption is better considering more fuel is being pushed through. Would you be interested in a video interview? Thank you I have heard of BST magic I will try go and interview him to get a verdict from the that point of view do you know where near Qld border Yes 🙌🏽 it is a bike that can be altered to be unique so I strongly believe there is no right or wrong answer.. I will do a video comparing a 100% stock 2021 full stock exhaust DR650 to myne which has bigger pilot and slip on … and to a 2021 DR with JD jetting/ air box hole/tapered needle and extra slide hole which runs well If I can find someone with a procycle kitted dr I’ll add that as a fourth bike

@@unbuckledadventures Mate, I hate doing a Facetime conversations with my daughter let alone doing an interview. Ask Barry from the the video I posted. I'm pretty sure he would be up for an interview and Gordon is a nice bloke too. Keep in mind that if the DR is unrestricted it will require less throttle to give the same or better performance which is one reason it gets better economy. You can run taller gearing which equates to lower revs and better economy also. I'm no expert, I just followed Gordons BST Magic recommendations and saw instant results both times.

I completely disagree. If youu know what you are doing and have an intimate feeling for the BST40 you have baby jesus in your hajnds. Best bike in the world with a discerning carb mod and free flow exhaust.

Completely agree, I've got my bike tuned right and it is amazing to ride, I couldn't imagine it being any better. It was a dog when I got it.

There is so much just plain wrong information here: We HAVE ridden our DRs around the world - with stock jets, cut springs, drilled slides, ground needles and GSXR exhausts: the so-called BST Magic. The rest of the motors are stock. Immediately it was done, we noticed far better throttle response and had to turn the idle down. All three bikes easily topped 161 km/h on correctly-calibrated Vapor computers. The bikes are now on roughly 70,000km - stock pistons, cams, valves - even the clutches. Valve clearances have barely moved, if at all. Our fuel consumption went DOWN with these mods - loaded with all the gear we needed to live on the road for a year, we were routinely getting 23-24km/l even on questionable fuel, dirt roads and rough terrain; I cut 1" x 2" holes in the airbox on the shore of Lake Titicaca (between Peru and Bolivia, where we went 5200 metres ASL) to let in more air, and I put duct-tape over the holes below 4000m. I have never found any traces of so-called "Oil dilution" even when the oil temp soared in heavy traffic of plugging through jungles and landslides - but we do have manual fuel taps and know enough to routinely turn the fuel off overnight. Oil & filter changes at 6000km intervals. This misleading information is nothing more than an advert for a shameless self-promoting dealer and it ensures that I'll not being buying from that business again.

Thank you for your opinion backed up from what’s sounds like some amazing experiences! May I ask how this video promotes Vince’s business? I don’t see how this video promotes his business ? Please inform me if possible I am sure he would be sad to lose you as a customer.

I wonder about Vince’s comments if he really believes what he says then why is his website promoting and selling these products seems pretty hip a critical to me

@@kerritanner6558 the opinions you hear in the video are his personal opinions about what he would do. His business provides a wide range of products so people have the choice to do what they want. As it is a personal bike, people have different preferences. As he has said to me before...he would not use most of what he sells. The demand is there so he provides it . He is a simple practical guy who doesn't overdo the mods, everything has a reason.

I am yet to try a us model and as he says in the video different countries have different restrictions so mabye your right. A lot of the us people on fb and here say that they are too lean stock. Everyone has a different experience, maybe goes better stock with bigger 45 pilot and aftermarket exhaust What size jet does it come with stock in US ?
