WHY you shouldn't buy INITIAL D on the PS2! 

For reference: the rerelease of the game (the The Best version) fixes the compatibility with all ps2 slim models and the game doesn't crash at all

Also, for anyone who doesn't want to import from Japan, The HDD mod that let's you boot games from a fat PS2 is region free. You can play this on a US PS2 with no hardware modding, and don't even need a working DVD drive.

Wow. Didn't know the Slim PS2 one messes it up. That sucks man I'm half Japanese and own an Original Fat Silver Japanese PS2. My Japanese Grandpa had bought me one back in 2001 at Toys R Us in Yokohama Japan. So I grew up playing this game, loved it. But never knew the Super Slim can't play the game. That sucks. But besides that. Nice video man, very relatable on terms of playing it on the arcade and spending lots of money lmao.

Happogahara is soooo fun. Irohazaka is great with the hair pin turns and interesting. Happo keeps you on your toes as you need to stay focused on the course. Shomaru is also difficult, narrow and wall taps kill any sort of speed you have... 2yrs ago on my trip to japan i got to drive up and down the Iroha slopes, in a coach bus with the tour. it was almost a dream come true ie 95.0% as the last 5% was small bus stop we passed on the way that had an amazing view of the downhill road from across the corresponding valley. the bus took up all the lanes on the hiarpins and was one of the highlights of the trip. the Kegone waterfalls use the Iroha slope as access to get there.

Where I was from in Montreal Downtown there was a arcade with Initial D 3 that then became D 4 and Maximum tune 5 with the years, Best arcade game ever, from the amazing soundtracks, anime campaign, racing others, beating time scores of other's people ghosts, modifying, upgrading your car and it all saved your progress on your card making you always wanting to come back, no other arcade games ever gave me that kind of long-term commitment. Now I live in Calgary and there is no arcade that has initial D sadly.

You actually don’t need a Japanese PS2 to play Special Stage if you softmod your PS2 to run it off a hard drive (or even a usb thumb drive if you don’t mind stuttering FMV). Basically the PS2 only does a region check when first booting up the disc so by launching games from a HDD it bypasses it so you can play games from any region. I even found a partial English translation for Special Stage that translates most of the menus. Also I have the same wheel so that’s pretty cool. I found mine on the curb for free. I don’t have the pedals though so for now I’m stuck with a controller lol. Edit: I didn’t mean to post this twice. RU-vid comments were broken for everyone yesterday and I commented this right before they were fixed. When I looked back for my comment I couldn’t find it so I thought it was deleted during the fix.

Every year I used to spend a month in China, with my missus. There's an arcade I would go to and play Initial D. Was fun as hell but I'm sure they had the difficulty setting set higher. Lol.

I use to play the shit out of this on the ps2, it was a great game. Also made it so i knew all the tracks so well that I was able to kick the crap out of everyone at the arcade with a unworked ae85 whilst they had fully worked cars. People use to trip right out

I just have to say, if I'm going to want to relive the experience of a game like this, I'm going nuts to butts and splurging on the actual arcade setup, the one we all remember playing.

Dude I swear on my dead father’s SOUL I was on my downstairs toilet at 11:30PM when the KNOCK KNOCK sound effect at 5:25 hit my ears. The window in the bathroom leads to the backyard and it was pitch black out there. I called out to my pregnant wife who I’d HOPED had knocked on the bathroom door, no answer, she was asleep. I wiped my ass, jumped up and had my largest kitchen knife in my right hand within ten seconds! I Flicked on both backyard lights and psyched myself up to go out there and face the freak that was peeking on me and knocked on my bathroom window! Finally after about 3 minutes I gathered the courage and stormed outside ready to stab or slash the first person I saw! My neighbors DEFINITELY saw me and I’m nervous they might call the cops. I played the clip back and realized it was a fucking sound effect you added in! Fuck me that was the most terrifying experience of my life! 😟🤣

I play the Arcade Version and I now have a PS2 whit Initial D Special Stage, I spend so much money in the Arcade on my 1º to 3º Semester of the Univerity just enjoying the Arcade, and im planing on buying a Steering Wheel just to also play Initial D Special Stage and other racing Games.....

I’m surprised given how popular it was regarding versing other people online there hasn’t been any attempt to bring the full fledge arcade experienced to the PS5. It’ll no doubt be popular amount racing fans.

I had to get a Swap Magic 3 for the PS2 so I can play that game. But it was a great game and I played it a lot when I was a huge Initial D fan. I also played the arcade games. Not all of them though. Up to Arcade Stage Version 3.

to anyone who wants to play this game now, you don’t need a japanese ps2 but you do need a fat ps2, a swap magic and a tool to force the tray open, or there’s always pcsx2 both methods are relatively easy and cheaper

Your gripe with Extreme Stage is a matter of opinion but it's common for a lot of fans to not be a fan of Extreme/Arcade stage 4's physics. SEGA Changed arcade hardware at this time and had to rework a lot of the physics when going from 3 to 4. After all these years I will finally play Special Stage for myself soon. Looking forward to it as a fan of the PS2, the series and the arcade hardware it runs on.

i cant for the life of me beat type r civic in arcade mode. i drive a rx7 and I just cannot pass the short hairpins near the end of the track but the civic ai does it so unrealistically well i just can't...

use a PC emulator instead of paying so much money for 2 japanese ps2s. In the PCSX2 (ps2 emulator) setup screen you can just pick a region of which your virtual ps2 is on and i'm pretty sure it can be easily changed in the settings if you eventually want to play a game from another region. Edit: Nevermind, you don't even need to do that at all. PCSX2 automatically makes games for other region work.

I had never heard of that! A couple years ago I imported a slim silver 75000 and a half-dozen PS2 games, IDSS ran with no issues. must be on only the even later slim models I'm guessing? fun game but can get ridiculously hard.

how curious, I have a SCPH-75004 model of ps2, it is a PAL region (but only reads usa games, how weird), it's a slim, it is hacked with matrix and I can play this game normally, I need to say that I play a patched version of the game, so it is in english maybe I can play it due the region of the console, or matrix, or because it is patched, I don't know, the only problem i have is the screen, but I can adjust it and play the game normally

Or you know, just get a FreeMcBoot memory card, and play the game on your American PS2, because region locking is an issue that has been solved for over 2 decades now. All tho you still need an older model.

weird, mine 77007 seems working fine for the game.

for those with the top loading slim US playstation, swap magic works amazing for playing jap games, mine works great for special stage. It replaced the top loader piece with one you can remove and swap the discs, and the swap magic disk will flash to ps2 and then your good to go without buying a jap ps2!

All this could've been resolved by just softmodding your american PS2 slim with 007 agent under fire exploit.

Special stage is based off version 2. I was introduced to 3rd stage. After that I lost interest in the beer stages and up. PSP street stage is the closest version of version 3

Initial D: the Play Station Staged

Special Stage set the bar for console Initial D games. Loads of extra content, music and even the extra story mode. I just wish they would’ve put Street Stage on PS2/PS3 instead of PSP. Ver. 3 is my all time favorite, but it would’ve been nice to see it get the Special Stage treatment. Still wayyyy better than Extreme Stage though… I’m glad they toned down the driftiness from AS5 onwards.

Pc & Teknoparrot is the answer to initial D bliss. Playing all of the arcade games in 8k 60fps is heaven.

Hey I wish I saw your video before I went through the same thing! I have a japanese 75xxx white slim as well. I have 3 copies of the game disc because I thought it was too scratched. Good to know I should have just bought the phat in the first place. I guess it's back to ebay for me too. Promise me this is the last thing I'll have to buy!

I love how you didn't play street stage cause you didn't own a PSP, yet you ended up purchasing 2 PS2's to play Special stage.

I made this experience before. I got an ultra rare Broadband Adapter for the Dreamcast directly from Japan - shipping per EMS was ridiculously inexpensive, less than half of what DHL would have cost, the item itself was also half of what they go for around these places, and then it also due to some shifty timezone magic, it arrived the same day that i ordered! Perfect condition, too. Crazy, right?

I would suggest the Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (Kaido Touge No Densetsu) if you're itching for that Initial D experience, while the game itself had nothing to do with Initial D in any shape of form, there are a lot of FamilyMart versions of Initial D characters and even Over Rev characters of all things, and a pretty big car list to boot too
