Why You Shouldn't EVER Use Debit Cards

A few key reasons for why you should avoid using debit cards when making purchases in store or online and the major benefits that credit cards have instead.
1. 00:13 - Debit card is the gateway to your current account
2. 01:21 - Lack of fraud protection
3. 03:09 - Section 75 protection
4. 05:09 - Spending perks (e.g. cashback)
5. 05:57 - Flexibility around repayment options
6. 08:09 - Prevent release of direct debit setup information
Using your credit card gives you so much more protection, more options on how and when to repay and often provides additional perks whether it's cashback or some form of a loyalty scheme.
For virtually all regular payments, a credit card will always win against using a debit card so make sure you're using the right plastic for your purchases.

Sasha , is it ok to have your debit card to put your wages and pay your subscription bills , like Netflix , the gym and other subscriptions. but use your credit card for other things and then transfer your money that you owe to the credit card from your debit card?

Hi money fox, I’ve been with Lloyd’s since 2018 February. I want to get a credit card as a 19 year old turning 20 in November In Order to build credit Would you recommend getting Lloyd’s credit card even though other credit cards may be more useful just so I stick with only one bank?
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 4 года назад
Hi there! There's no particularly good reason to stick with one bank - it doesn't really help in any way. I'd first go onto a comparison website and do a check against all credit cards to see what you're eligible for - you might just be able to get a decent premium credit card that will offer rewards and lower rates. If you find you're only qualifying for the near-prime credit cards (targeting new to credit and bad credit - e.g. aqua, Vanquis, Capital One Classic), it's worth checking with your bank if they will approve you. Sometimes your banking history will be enough for them to give you a card and that may be better than the ones I listed above. Check out my oldest video - I go through the 6 best credit cards for beginners which might be useful for you! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KOCgPDFMQ6s.html

also will you recommend moving your car insurance and phone monthly payments to your credit card? really loving this channel btw.
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 4 года назад
It doesn’t really matter - as long as you’re using the card regularly every month, you should be good. If you don’t want to remember to use it to pay, putting recurring transactions on the card can work well BUT: Direct debits on current accounts are much better than using credit cards for recurring transactions. Credit cards set up something called a Continuous Payment Authority and these are much harder to cancel/get out of - you have to try and get the company who’s charging you to do it. For that reason, recurring transactions on credit cards are not great, especially for less well known firms.

@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 года назад
I personally often do BUT a DD is much better and easier to manage (no having to update card details all the time) plus with a card you are setting up a continuous payment authority. Shouldn’t be an issue with the big providers but can be a pain yo cancel with smaller ones.

What abt credit cards from "modern" banks like Starling or monzo, do their cards give you protection?

Neither of them do credit cards - they only do debit cards linked to their bank account. Those do not offer you Section 75 protection or any of the other credit card perks.

Please also cover if there are any credit cards out there that provide instant alerts for all transactions.. The HSBC credit card I had never provides an alert just monthly statement ..

There are some that allow you to customise alerts and enable them for individual transactions like some of the challenger banks do. I never saw the appeal of constantly getting them, but some people like them - issue is I'm not sure there's enough there for a whole video but I'll have a think.

Great info, love your content, this is new to me. Though I agree with your points but at the same time, not all of us are good with credit cards, isn't it? Shouldn't we instead have a separate spending current account where we only transfer the fund we budgeted to use?
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 года назад
Well some of the points in this are specific to the differences between how credit cards and debit cards work. I do agree with you though - people need to self educate and get to a place where a credit card is a positive tool rather than a debt burden.

I think one of the other benefits of using credit card is to make your debit card statements look neat. For example when you apply for mortgage, the banks will ask for debit card statements. You don't want the bank underwriters to know where you are spending your money. For example if you want to purchase luxury items like designer bags and shoes, you don't want the bank underwriters to know that you are an extravagant person and therefore it would be better to purchase such luxury items using credit card (even if you have money in your current account).
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 года назад
Haha. That's actually a great point. Sometimes you'll need to show your bank statements for various reasons but with things like mortgage applications, if your card payments are large, they may well request those statements too. But yeah - good point!
@papsk

That’s right. You’ll pay a cash withdrawal fee (usually 3%) and then daily interest at a much higher rate than purchases so you will pay some interest even if you repay in full.

It depends on the card. Here in germany most cards will charge you for that, my DKB Visa however does not. Also with the Barclaycard Visa withdrawals are completely free of charge. And with both cards interest rates just apply if you don't manage to pay your credit card bill on time.

@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 года назад
Make sure you check your credit reports to try and understand what data the credit reference agencies hold on you. If you can get an overdraft, that's sometimes a good place to start building credit history and in some cases your own bank might be more likely to give you a credit card than other providers although this really depends on the bank.

Hardly anyone accepts Credit cards here in the Netherlands! The Maestro Debit card is the king so no choice...
@SashaYanshin
@SashaYanshin 3 года назад
That’s super surprising. Maestro is owned by Mastercard and most commercial agreements force acceptance of mastercard on terminals where Maestro works. And Visa usually only permits terminals to work with both debit and credit options too. I’ve driven through the Netherlands enough (I have a thing for road trips) and not once had an issue where I couldn’t pay - I am guessing I didn’t go to the really local shops though.
