When I had a detailing business (over 10,000 cars serviced - retail and commercial), Teflon was the go-to up scaled product. I had ceramic coating done to my vehicles and people still can't believe how old 2015 still looks new (its a rare factory color)! There is always "something better" being created in the lab". Ceramic coating is typically composed of silicon dioxide (silica, Si02), which is sourced from natural materials such as quartz and sand. Some types and brands also use titanium dioxide (titania, Ti02) as an additional hardening agent.Aug 6, 2020

I am wayyyy too OCD to use a ceramic coating on my vehicles. I can't imagine not being able to polish my paint for 3 years. If I get a swirl, water spot, bird bomb stain, light scuff, etc. I want to correct it quickly and cheaply. I like being able to polish out any small area easily without having to strip and re-coat the entire panel. Many modern sealants have improved, and are super-durable. I have no problem re-applying them 2 or 3 times per year. It is therapeutic for me, and only takes just a little time. In my opinion (and that of a Rupes salesman I heard), ceramic coatings are best for the daily driver that actually might have scratches and dings on it. The one that you will never polish. The one that will only see washes in the time you own it. Great video, as always, guys!

I’m in agreement with my fellow waxers. Ceramic coatings are designed for the lazy old fart who barely drives his low mileage Corvette (insert Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc) and needs a strong protectant that will last for a while. I’m more of a polish my daily beater 2-3 times a year kinda guy. I use the lightest polish compound because there’s literally nothing to even polish out but I do it anyway just to chase down that random scratch. There’s nothing like a freshly waxed car. Why anyone would prolong this pleasure for several years is beyond me. Lol. Real car guys polish more often then once every 2-3 years. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dude you're an animal I can't believe the level of patience you have to do all that testing. Why do so few people discuss blowing the car dry after washing. I use a garden blower or something even more powerful to dry the car, get under all the moldings, in the grill, the wheels, open the doors and hood and trunk and get in those areas. By the time I'm done all I need are a couple of very small towels to tidy up. Much less work , touch-free, and less laundering. I also like to hold the hose in one hand and sponge in the other , constantly flooding the area so I'm not rubbing any dirt particles around.

There's 3 BIG issues with aggressive coatings such as ceramics. 1. Although they do help provide a stronger layer of clear coat protection for perhaps "years", vehicles that are used as Daily Driving will be exposed to all the outside elements and road conditions. It's inevitable that the coating will soon become scratched( light swirl marks/ spyder webbing etc etc). When this occurs, the best way to remove those defects is by buffing it out. It's important to know, buffing(compounding)will remove said coating. It's not worth anyone's time and money using aggressive coatings on fault operated vehicles, I'd say coatings are beneficial for vehicles used as props in showrooms or in museums. 2. Cost. These coatings are expensive. It's great that some have "deeper pockets" than others, capitalism and constitution are beautiful things. Never the less, ceramic coatings are items that aren't practical for everyday drivers. The application service for these types of coatings could range anywhere from $100's to pressure even $1,000s.. Yes Thousands of dollars( depending on which service provider/product/location and type of vehicle). 3. Health Hazard. There's many cases of lung failure/collapse which were reported due to ceramic coating dust particles in the air when inhaled. When buffing a vehicle that was previously treated with ceramic coating, will cause the ceramic dust particles releasing into the air which is very dangerous. High quality masks are required when correcting and or when applying ceramic coatings. During this current pandemic, 3M- M95 and other higher quality masks are rare to obtain ( if you're even able to obtain them via Government regulations) and if you're part of the lucky few to obtain M95 masks......they're very expensive. Perhaps just as valuable as currency. Logically speaking, essential professionals such as Surgeons, Doctors and Nurses need these masks more than say....an auto detailer. It was a great idea to have created aggressive longer lasting ceramic coatings but they just aren't necessary and practical for vehicles that use used for daily driving. They're costly, hazardous and impractical. A safer alternative would be to use a kind of a spray sealant, Turtle Wax Ceramic Hybrid spray is an excellent choice. It's inexpensive (around $7- $10 per bottle), its efficient in the sense that it's a "Spray on and wipe off " application and it provides long lasting protection with a high gloss. When exterior correction ( buffing/detailing) is necessary, removing the spray coating isn't much of a loss considering they're less hazardous and they're inexpensive. A win win situation

Fantastic argument against the process. I’m having trouble locating the info on the coating particles causing problems after 2017. One post mentions improvements neutralizing the threat but I’m out of my league here. Do you have any references leading to this still being a problem? I was all for coating but I have kids and don’t want them exposed to something they needn’t be. So I appreciated your input. Just wondering how much a threat this is?

Some of the higher end luxury car dealerships are now "adding-on" ceramic coating for $3000 upcharge. Obviously this is due to the car shortages in 2021-2022.

The first thing I say to people who ask about coatings is do you know how to wash a car properly in order to maintain the coating ? If you take your car to the local car wash or don't wash the car properly then it's just throwing money down the toilet. Coatings are great but are very over hyped and people seem to think thier paint will stop a .50 cal bullet.

A lot have an unrealistic definition for ceramic coatings because the car dealership offers it as a $500.00 additiln. you ask what that does and they make it like it a bullet proof shield.

Tried two coating systems on two different cars and in both cases I was unimpressed and overall disappointed. Neither survived our winters I am fairly certain the liquid deicing agents etched them requiring polishing to bring back to a clear shine. I had issues with Coatings I simply never had with more traditional waxes and sealants. I went full circle and am back to waxing my car. It takes me an hour to apply a coat of Collinite 915 with a machine and doing that every few months isn't too inconvenient or difficult. Everyone is crazy about coatings...I'm waiting for paint corrections to become popular. That's where you get real results.

I took my baby in for a paint job this past fall. There were dings, scratches and some cracking of the paint on the hook and trunk lid, there were no dents not even minor dents. The shop brought the hood and trunk lid down to bare metal and rid of all dings. My aunt took me to pick up my car, my car was parked in the front of the parking lot of the paint shop. I noticed a BMW as we pulled up to the shop I knew it was not my Bimmer, but in fact it was, I didn't even recognize my own car. I was in shock, I couldn't believe how great it looked. The appearance of my Bimmer was major. I care for the exterior and interior of my car like I care for the engine, I change the oil and filter every 2,500 miles or 2.5 months with Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. I laugh each time I buy the oil because the oil bottle reads, "Protects the engine for 10,000 miles." I wish I would let my car go more then 3K miles without an oil and oil filter change let alone 10K miles, I would have a damned heart attack. I hate car washes of any kind unless it is done totally by washing by hand. I wash my car 2 sometimes 3 times a week. During the winter months, I blowout the water of my garden hose roll up the hose nice and neat and in the annex it goes for those crapy cold winter months. I don't know what else to do to get rid of dirt road salt and whatever other crap gets on the surface of my car but to take it (I cringe each time I pull in) to a carwash. We do not know what kind of chemical(s) are spraying out of those hoses. I set the dial to high pressure soap and spray down the bristles of the brush to rid of any dirt and sand. I want to take my Bimmer into the professionals to have them add the Ceramic coat(s) because I want my baby to look the very best that she can and I will most definitely keep up with the upkeeps of maintaining

If you are going to get painted pinstriping don't get ceramic coating before the striping is applied. Ceramic is difficult to remove & to tell if its all removed. Hand painted pinstriping will not last if applied on top of ceramic coating.

I bought my car last september and was sold on getting a ceramic coating, for an extra $20 a month. While I was filling out the forms for my finance they came back after 10 minutes and said it was all set. I don't think they even applied anything and I was taken. When I washed my car earlier this summer I applied my own ceramic coating and it took about 2 hours. I could tell the difference between mine and the dealerships, its very slippery and bird poop pretty much slides off. I really only have to use waterless car wash solutions now in the summer to make it look brand new again. Never again will I pay a dealership for something I can do myself. I don't even trust the free oil changes I get becuase I bought it through them.

I have been trying to take care of my car but I worry about everyone else. My son ran into my car with his dirt bike. My dogs once came inside the garage while the car was on jack stands(as my kids were arguing about something and wanted me to be judge)the two dogs started fighting over something knocking it off the stands. 9 times out of 10 I have no control over others irresponsible behavior.

I find that to be great advice I have not been using Ceramic Coating Because I find if you do get swirl marks and you have to remove the coating on the area and it can be a real pain it's a pain in the ass am finding that using a good sealant because my car is Kept in a garage I find it's much easier to Maintain gives me a very nice shine I've been using a product called jet coat from my top I find it to be amazing and gives me the same shine from that as I do from my ceramic coating

I purchased a 2019 alfa romeo giulia under my wifes name to build her credit and put it on turo. first thing I did is clayed the car, stripped any wax that was on it (which there wasnt) and applied ceramic coating. Why? 1. because i ask people on turo not to wash the car and that the car was is included in the rental fee. 2. because i want quick and easy maintenance washes for the next person who rents 3. because by the time it hits 50k miles its getting sold and i want the car to shine like a diamond without the need to polish the thing. verdict? I want a coat on my car to withstand a full week of rental where someone drives it and couldnt care less about keeping the paint clean. its like having a best friend telling me that its gonna keep dirt away from my paint. all in all, it costed me $100 to ceramic coat it myself. Yes I went triple coat

I take care of my car regularly by hand-washing it. It is completely covered with Expel Stealth Ultimate PPF. I thought adding a ceramic coating would allow water to sheet off the car so I wouldn't have to hand-wipe it down after washing. WRONG. I thought it would help eliminate water spots from dew, rain, etc. WRONG. This was a VERY expensive mistake on my part. If your water is soft, it might not leave spots, but my water is hard and calcium (one of the ingredients in hard water) makes white-edged water drops all over the car if I let them dry without wiping the car down. It is MURDER to get the spot off the PPF. I used the Expel Ceramic coating because they said it would work with their PPF. Save your money. It doesn't.
