I have to disagree with Gen 8 and 9 disks being just on the download code. What happens is the games transfer from disk to the hard drive for fast loading times. If you disconnect the console from the internet you will be able to play the game. Admittedly it will be v1.0 without the patches but should be playable

I don't know about games but I still like to buy physical copies of movies - you can watch them whenever you want and are not tied to if Netfix or Prime happen to have them available at any given time. Also if you buy digital copies then quit these services you will lose everything- keep buying physical people!

IMO there are a lot of factors at play that will affect the value of physical games in the future, for eg: 1) Will the game get a modern platform remaster/reissue 2) Will the current platform online store front offer a retro version of the game to buy/download and play 3) Will a game eventually become so old that most of its target user base (Age group who remember it) not want it anymore, reducing its demand and value (Atari 2600 for eg) 4) Online multiplayer shooters with no offline single player may become worthless once the servers are taken down and the games are unplayable

If companies really wanted they could create a physical media that is very fast as well (and with plenty of storage). It's just that they aren't interested in that, they want to cut costs and if possible make people buy their games a 2nd or 3rd time (plus eliminate the second hand market).

Yes, I do believe that your argument regarding holding onto physical media does have merit. It is also beneficial that, if you are a collector of physical media, you should preserve and take care of them while they are in your care. Since you seem to be concerned about this, then why does it look like you store all of your games in a dumpster? Everything is just stacked all on top of each other with no sense of organization at all. And when you flipped over your GTA V disc at the 4:26 mark, it looked like you used it as either a frisbee or drink coaster given the state of the bottom of the disc. It just seems to me that, given your feelings on physical media, your presentation in this video doesn't coincide with your stance on the matter. Just my opinion.

I think the way of the games industry is becoming just like the other software - if the companies can get us to transition ALL of them want "software as a service". They can control piracy, distribution AND most importantly COST. Retro is NEVER going away. VERY much agree: people are prolly gonna want to charge more for collectors. I personally left THAT shore a long time ago. At this point, because of the scalpers - I refuse to pay their prices. Physically, I ONLY buy what I'm actually going to play. Saying that modern physical discs is just wrong. Yes physical media for ps4/ps5/xbox1/seriesX work differently that uses hard drive space than switch/older physical media. Believe it or not, most physical games for modern consoles DO in fact contain the full game on the discs and can be played without an internet connection, ever. The way modern physical media works is very similar to how pc physical games worked, by INSTALLING (different from a DOWNLOAD) the game from that ps4/ps5/Xbox disc (or 2 discs even) that contains the full v1.0 version of the game but the difference between pc physical games and modern physical games is that the disc needs to be inserted into the console at all times. I'll give you an example, doom eternal, a game released 2 years ago, can be installed from the game data contained on the 50 gb disc to modern consoles and the campaign can be fully be played from start to finish, all without ever requiring internet or a psn/Xbox account. I'll give you another example, for a ps4/xbox1 game that is more than 50 gb, a game that has not one but TWO discs: first, the "data disc" and second, the "play disc", and that game is red dead redemption 2. Red dead redemption 2 can be installed onto the consoles with 2 discs without a need of an internet connection and can be played from start to finish and if that game requires a download, the game would've came with only one discs but no it didn't. There are exceptions to the rule though, like gran turismo 7 and Diablo 4 being an online only game or the new call of duty that only contains 70 mb or halo infinite that doesn't even have a campaign on disc that do not have playable offline single player content on disc. (The reason why the packaging says "internet required" anyway) So most modern physical media is in fact fully playable completely offline without ever needing to "download" the game but an installation from the discs that the console copies to the hdd to. Don't just take my word from it, you can just test it yourself with your copy of gta5, set your console to offline mode, delete whatever updated gta5 is on the console, and just insert it in and play after it's finished installing. There is also a dedicated Twitter account that goes by "Doesitplay1" that disproves that "physicals are just keys now" narrative and their own official website too. With all that being said, I still love physical media a lot and still vastly prefer it over digital and will continue to support physical media while it's still in store shelves. I'm sorry that this comment is too long but I just can't stand this false narrative being spread.

Well what your saying makes sense and is completely different from what the guy in the video is talking about saying the discs are just cd-keys which makes no sense because if that were the case they wouldn’t bother with a CD/Disc at all, they would maby provide a box with a cd key in it (like they do with some switch games).

Some people said this in the comments here is one "most games are perfectly playable from the DISC. Sure, the updated versions may play better, but in most cases day one updates aren't making significant changes. There are some games that happened to, but most are fine even without updating. Further, you can back up game updates to an external drive so you can manually update your games later down the line" The PS4 and Xbox games on disk do have the entire game in it, no not just indies or retro collections most of them do. Unless its a game that requires online to play or whoever or is huge but even then you have for example The last of us part 2 on PS4 has two disk, one is the data disk and the other is to play the game. The disks to play the game are literally in the case and on the disk. What your talking about with connection to the server and such is for DIGITAL TITLES not for physical disks. What your also not thinking of is that the game is downloading the updates for things like bug fixes, add-ons, and so on its not downloads to play the game itself because if you let it, it will have a bar that installs the game onto your PS4 system. The PS3 does the EXACT SAME THING. You pop in a disk into the PS3 and it starts installing onto the console so you have to wait for it to install which is what the PS3 does as well when you put in a game disk into your ps3 and have to wait a while before you can play it. Your confusing installation with downloading and that doesn't require the PS server for putting the disk in either on PS3 or PS4. So collecting games for PS is good and I think Xbox is the same. I have more PS4 games than I have any other playform so I'm not worried about the value nor the fear of not being able to play them as it should be fine.

A great example of a physical game that really needed patches on Day 1: Sonic Colors Ultimate.
@cjeelde
@cjeelde Год назад
@Rein exactly! That's what I wanted to comment, you wrote it all for me, you read my mind. Another examples are some Nintendo games recently: + Mario Tennis for Switch + Mario Golf for Switch + Switch Sports They added content/sports later on. I would rather have waited a bit longer to get all that add-on in the physical copy. Good examples when they go for digital DL first and then a physical copy: + Sonic Mania Plus + Sonic Origins Plus It's both pros and cons with the new type of physical copies. Just look at the old school games "before internet" when the developers couldn't fix anything. It was like newspapers: "this is it". Would love to see a video from some youtuber about "the worst physical releases" that needed bug fixes asap. Maybe there's already that kind of videos on here? But I got that feeling that the reason why too many physical releases are too buggy is not just one reason. It's two: 1 - lazy developers 2 - the publishers wanna rush the releases (money hungry!) These two reasons works because: there's always possible to release patches later on thanks to internet!
@NexusNine
@NexusNine Год назад
You're incorrect about PS4 games not being on the DISC. Most PS4 games are indeed entirely on the DISC and do not require an internet connection to play. The instillation you're seeing isn't a download, it's just the data files being copied to your hard drive FROM the DISC.
@zusretro
@zusretro Год назад
Dude that game is sick! N64 version was just as good I think.
@zonk1477
@zonk1477 Год назад
Yup basically like going from reading directly from the CD to now having to install from that DISC to the hard drive. Like PC games for a while. Even after you installed the game on the machine you still had to keep disc in CD drive to play. But now that's slowly moving to all digital games. At least with PC it's always backwards compatible and you buy the game digitally and have it for ever. I am still don't trust Sony or Nintendo. They can make a new console and make it so all the digital games you bought don't play on the new system. And after a while they close the stores. So at that point you aren't buying a game forever. You are renting it. It's already bad that you can't sell the digital game later if you don't want it anymore. But now you can't even keep it forever it has an expire date. Seems like that is intentional. Digital downable games won't be a thing for long because of that it's to push everyone into streaming games and having an online gaming service like Netflix for Video games. That's what it is actually moving to.

The GTA example you used is wrong. It's not a key with a download. It's letting you know how much space you need to install it. You can disconnect from the network and still play it. @ThatwasaSTRIKE
@ThatwasaSTRIKE Год назад
That’s speculation. Just because it’s all on the disc might not mean they go up in price. Think of movies, and how cheap dvds and blu rays are right now, because *most* people are watching them on streaming services, they have no need for the physical movie disc when they can watch that same movie with their subscription. The same could happen with games if people are able to purchase subscriptions and play retro games on their future consoles (I think Nintendo, and PlayStation already have ways for people to do that, they might expand on those features with future consoles) The future prices of games would depend on if there’s people willing to pay what someone else has a game priced at. I could see “rare” games being expensive, but common games are probably going to stay cheap. I could be wrong though. I’ve seen random games go up in price out of nowhere. Games that were selling for $10 a couple years ago might sell for $50+ now. I’m personally hopping that prices go down, for every collectors sake. A lot of people are getting priced out from playing the games they like and are turning to emulation. That could possibly have some type of effect on future prices.
@zusretro
@zusretro Год назад
Thanks for commenting! I love DVDs but games hold much more value because they are interactive. The retro community is much bigger than people think and the demand for real retro games will increase over time, specially when they start removing physical media. Emulation is a good choice for many since prices keep going up. I believe the future of the video game market, retro or modern should be decided by us. However, these companies are pushing us to rent and not own. We can call it a subscription or membership but in reality it's renting and I myself would like to own them.
@ThatwasaSTRIKE
@ThatwasaSTRIKE Год назад
@@zusretro I collect games myself. Im aware that they are interactive and different compared to movies, I used movies as a comparison because they are the closest things to games in regards to people going from purchasing physical discs to purchasing subscriptions. Because I collect games, I don’t want prices to get to a point where the average person can’t afford them. Games should be enjoyed and played, and I feel like the current culture around games values the prices/reselling more than playing the games themselves. Luckily what I collect (360, wii, ps4) is cheap and available in most places. However if someone wanted to collect GameCube then they would have to open up their wallet. Like I said I think the rare stuff might hold value or go up but the common games (for example the LEGO games) might not skyrocket like you’d think. I have a nice 3DS collection from my childhood (I’m 19) and expect those games to go up over time. But you have to think about the other side and that’s that a lot of people, even if they want to play the games, might not be willing to spend the money in order to buy the game off a reseller. That’s why I’m somewhat against using video games as “investments” but I won’t deny the possible money that can be made.

The next consoles will not be digital only. It will just be the normal optional choice. If you are only in it for profit then Id say its a gamble as alot of these games are not going to last due to disc rot and cartridge failure. The way you have these games stored is not recommended. Id advise you to store them sidways as disc do not do well laying down stacked due to gravity.

Physical media wont skyrocket. We all grow out of it eventually. Also Sony and Microsoft will eventually have a cloud database full of every game you can think of, its just a matter of time. When that happens id happily sell my collection as i have no use for it when i can have everything on 1 or 2 subscriptions - it just makes sense for a lot of people. Nobody wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a game like clock tower when you can play a legit port for a subscription with whatever other perks the service offers.
@luckyretrotwist
@luckyretrotwist Год назад
While I agree with some things from your statement, not all games will be available to play through subscription services. Their servers have a limit of games they can carry. That's why either Microsoft or Sony remove and add games on a monthly/yearly basis. Also, license agreements between companies eventually expire, and those specific games get taken down. For example, titles like Godzilla, Deadpool, Amazing Spiderman 2, TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan, Metal Max are no longer available digitally. Their copies are indeed skyrocketing in price, whether you prefer digital or physical. There will always be collectors/buyers and sellers out there keeping the hobby alive.

Physical is the only way I’ve always been this way I don’t buy digital Games hardly ever unless three are extremely cheap it just doesn’t make sense to me to spend £20 on a Digital game that to me just seems crazy even spending 20 as some people spend double that trip but trouble that it’s crazy when you can go out and buy the disk version that is on the disc And even PS4 games the game is on the disc it’s not a key The problem is they’re releasing Games to quick and putting them out there like a 55 GB game and it needs updating are they add new bits to it to make it sell more so for instance they may add online to it and update some of the glitches which could be another 20 GB that’s where the download part comes from the game is still on the disc. The day one but retro games were much better as they had no choice but then other than to make a game properly that’s why games were in production for much longer as yes compared to modern day games they’re tiny in the memory size but at the time that was a game that’s the size that was the only thing I ate about modern day Games. Is the fact you can only start say five or six on your system before its full because the games are that big now with that much information on them and that many updates it’s crazy retro games will always go up in price and always a good idea to grab them if you can afford it everyone can afford good games any budget it’s just about looking for them and. Buy games that you will play and you want I’ve been at it for that many years now I’ve got a massive collection I admit I’ve got plenty of games I’ve not played yet but I’m addicted I was a gamer that become a collector and then now I don’t even have to buy a game to play it there’s different factors involved now I’ve been doing it for that long so it might come with extras that I love like T-shirts keyrings stickers et cetera display statues so I buy them because I love getting the extra stuff also I now buy games if I love the artwork if a game comes out and I fall in love with the artwork but for instance I don’t like playing RPGs but I own plenty which I’ll never play I’d say but I’ve always got the option but I buy them for their artwork as a lot of the RPG is a fantastic anime style manga style artwork but on the most but I do buy games to play but I think there is a difference between a gamer and a collector I think most of us are there can be gamers or collectors or both I see people starting up every day some people that don’t even play games are now collecting which does seem weird but you can’t really say anything because we all have our weird quirks like I buy games that I won’t play just cause I like the artwork it’s weird how you can change over the years especially when you start getting into the thousands of games and light 50 consoles at least I buy accessories all sorts of weird stuff I don’t think I could ever stop but yeah I agree in some parts with the digital it’s definitely going digital in the next few years I think you’re right the next generation will be fully digital and yes the games will keep increasing in price and when it’s all digital it will only get worse but especially for retro games and four games that have been took off digital storefronts as the licenses or whatever legal issues so if that’s the only way to play some of the games by owning the physical version will push the price to crazy I tell anybody collecting video games is a great hobby and you’ve always got them all like buying digital where you only have a license to play the game for so long you’re basically renting it from them at any time they could take that down and you can’t play the game anymore if you’ve got a physical version of the game you’re okay on the most part I’d say to new collectors to not jst random buy like I see a lot ppl doing but Start with one system or like in a game era like say if your favourite thing is horror then by all the all the horror games or if you love the PlayStation three when you were younger or something like your first system was a Sega only click for that system it gets it a lot easier and you will have an awesome collection in no time as I’ve always had multiple systems even as a kid I suppose I was spoiled i’ve always collected for multiple systems so it’s normal for me but it’s hard to keep up with so I would much rather now I only really buy for PlayStation systems it makes it a lot easier less stressful and your collection will build quickly when you’re buying for multiple systems it doesn’t seem to grow as quick because they’re spread out more but each person is different to you do you but if I was to start today I’d go and start with some of the rarer games And the more expensive ones first as the cheaper ones will always be available more rarer and more expensive ones are more in demand and were printed in Roman numbers normally so go for them for that bit of advice I will give my wish I done that I’m trying to click for the PS3 at the minute full pal ps3 set I’m close to 800 cib ps3 & it’s now getting harder trying to get some of the uncommon & really rare ones tht didn’t sell well or was country exclusive like I’m hunting for “ra one on the ps3 It was only released in India so it’s extremely rare and it’s sold badly as it’s a terrible game but I only collect Games if they’re complete hope I can find a copy or if anyone here has one for sale that is complete with manual let me know I’ll pay a decent price ✌️

@DangerousDevilOfficial
@DangerousDevilOfficial Год назад
@@onetwo6039 yeah, I get that. I had one or two releases the same thing happened. The one that pushed me over the edge, was when they did an April fools release two years ago. And they only sold it for that day for like a couple hours and only announced it the day before. Or so they say. So I expected this to be a super rare release. As most people thought it was an April fools joke. And I was only able to verify by comments that about a dozen people ordered it, including me. Because maybe only a hundred or two hundred people even knew about it. So I bought 10 copies. To have and hold onto for a long time. Fast forward. And I asked them directly multiple times how many copies they sold. And they have refused to give a number. Not ignoring my post. They actually responded and said they would NOT give a number. After basically always giving numbers before that. “Limited to 1,000 copies”. “Limited to 2500 copies”. Stuff like that. Well, the only reason they would do that and flat out refuse to give a number of sold copies, so we know how rare this game truly is (when they have always given numbers on other releases), is because they sold so few. And PS4 has a 500 or 1K copy minimum for printing. So I fully suspect they are selling the rest of the copies on secondary markets. Because like two dozen copies popped up for sale on EBay all of the sudden in one go. When before there was none. I literally believe they sold less than 100 copies. Maybe even far lower. And to dump the rest and make money on the game, they have sold them off on secondary markets and sellers, connected to their company. They likely used this approach because the game was an April Fools gag, sold so few copies and was literally announced only hours before it was sold, only available for a couple hours and that all should have made it super, super rare. Likely the rarest release they have ever done, by far. To get people like me to buy it. That is what they sold us on, anyway. The very, very few of us who actually purchased this game after realizing it wasn’t an April fools gag like almost everyone thought it was. Then when that backfired on them and they sold so few, they didn’t make their money back for licensing the game and printing the Sony minimum, the only option they had was to now withhold the actual number of copies sold from people like me asking. So they could sell the rest in real sneaky, deceptive ways. Real shady, sc**bag type of stuff…. So I will never buy from them again… They are dishonest crooks.

It's mostly the opposite from what you forecast. The future will be digital and people will lose interests in collecting plastic. The retro collecting bubble will pop soon. It happened with a lot of collector bubbles before. The new generation isn't interested in collecting what they grew up with. We are in the age of AI and you talk about download sizes of games? Everything will be internet soon. Who wants to insert a data medium, if he can just click on something and have it instantly? Transfer rates will increase too. Your way of arguing is outdated. The physical collectors generations are about to fade slowly. Thus physical prices will drop extremely. I know someone who got a big video game store here. He's also saying that the retro hype won't last forever and will end soon.
@ajtstvandmusicarchivechann1585
@@scottshomo2205they are right. You don't see kids buying record players capable of 78rpm playback and rushing to ebay to buy vintage 1920s and older records for $1000s of $$$ It's a bunch of older people and they are dying. A few younger people are into 78s but not enough to sustain a market. Pre war 78s don't often sell to people under the age of 40. Collecting physical games will be like that once the actual hardware ages to the point of it being to hard to find a working unit. We are already seeing this issue with TVs not having even component Jack's.
@NexusNine
@NexusNine Год назад
Yeah, no. It's not strictly about collecting for everyone as much as it's about preservation. We're living in a time where the younger generation is growing up owning nothing and having what they love taken away at the whim of a corporation that will discard anything that isn't profitable anymore. How many people have you seen complain that streaming companies are canceling content and actively removing that content from their service to cut costs? That's the future gaming is headed twords. Physical media helps ensure the perseveration of art, which video games are. Yes, physical media can wear down and break, but that isn't something that can happen at the flip of a switch like it can happen to digital media. So much physical media is out in the wild that that it can't just disappear over night. There is film stock that has survived for over a century that made it possible to preserve those films on a multitude of different forms of physical media. Games aren't just going to all break in a day. I personally have Atari VCS games that are 40 years old that work as well as the day they came out of the box. In fact, every game I have ever owned for every system that I still own today ALL still work. Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, PSX, PS2, PS3, Game Boy, GBA, DS, 3DS,.Wii, Wii U... You name it. If I still own it, it still works. Physical media breaks down when it isn't taken care of. Yes, it can just stop working, but the likelihood of that happening is significantly less when it's handled with proper care. We should be working towards a future where physical media and digital media work in harmony to help ensure the preservation of art. Otherwise, as someone once said, you will own nothing, and you'll love it. I won't.

Another factually incorrect statement about ps4 and 5 games. Most ps4 and 5 game actually have fully playable day one builds on disc. It's mainly the AAA Companies like Ubusoft, Activision AND EA are the culprits. If you buy indie games niche titles and small run physical overall you will be good. Go for companies like Atlus, NIS, LIMITED RUN, Red Art, playasia, fangame, Koei, Xseed and do a quick Google search if you are unsure. However it's not reading from the disc it's getting all the content from the hard drive. Reading from the disc would be way to slow, specially with PS5 or PS4 games running in higher resolution. Blu-ray Disc media hold 50GB capacity. Considering modern games taking over 100GB of space. But just like you said "If you buy indie games niche titles and small run physical overall you will be good" these smaller games can run from disc without a problem. Again I appreciate your comment!
