I disagree with this analysis. I know plenty of people that did not enjoy active duty and would have gone reserve if they had to do it over again. Lots of perks about the reserve left out of this video, which is sad. I have been in the Air Force reserve for 6 years now and it’s been great.

@XX-Knight-XX21 Networking applies to the reserve as well, not just exclusive to active duty. I have met reservists that are lawyers, police, and all kinds of others professions in the civilian side. My current job was a result of networking in the reserve. Pay can be better in reserve compared to AD. If you live in the dorms or on base, you don’t get Base Housing Allowance. He also didn’t mention signing bonuses that exist for mission critical positions in the reserve. This is another great incentive to join the reserve. Tuition assistance applies to Reserves also, not exclusive to AD. I have had the reserve pay off a portion of my federal student debt which has been a great help for me. VA disability applies to reserve weekends in addition to drill weekends, if you get injured while on duty. You can collect VA benefits in the reserve too. Reserves gives you way more control over what job you can pick and where you get stationed, compared to AD. You can actually meet units you are interested in joining before you sign and see which is the best fit for you. Active duty simply cannot offer that, they put you where they need you. You can still volunteer for deployments or Temporary duty (TDY) assignments as a reservist as well. You are not stuck just showing up to drill one weekend a month for your entire career. Health Insurance benefits can apply to discounts on your civilian health insurance as well. Another Big perk he did not mention was differential pay that some employers will pay reservists for their time deployed, or training. A deployment differential can be calculated in different ways, depending on the employer but my current civilian employer will calculate the difference between my civilian hourly wage and my basic pay and pay me the difference for the time I am deployed, for up to two years. This is a voluntary benefit that some civilian employers will do, but nonetheless it is still a huge perk of being in the reserve. Another perk is the “deploy to dwell ratio”. AD gets 2 month’s dwell time for each month deployed, while reserves gets 5 months dwell time for each month deployed. Another perk in the Reserve is that you promote through the ranks in much less time compared to Active Duty. I know there has been this stigma in the reserves that “in order to promote in the reserve, someone has to either retire or die”. Although that may have been true maybe 20 years ago, as of now the military across the board is facing a manning shortage, which also means that there is a lot of room for growth and opportunities for promotion, especially in the reserve. Being a “reserve bum”, “bumming” or “troughing” I would consider another perk of the reserve. So this video addresses this, kind of. When you are bumming, you get in orders or deploy for a certain amount of time to cover your expenses for the year, then for the rest of the year you can coast off of the money you have earned. This really depends on the unit you join and their financial/operational standpoint within the military but I would consider working 6 months out of the year and having your expense covered as a perk of being in the Reserve. I am probably forgetting several other perks, but I hope this info helps.

As a reservist, the biggest benefit is that the reserves is tailor made for college students. You get access to tuition assistance. Only have to report one weekend a month two weeks a year. Commanders are more willing to work with your school schedule as long as you’re transparent and forth coming. And you get like 250$ ish dollars for that weekend. I also met and got exposed to other reservists in my units who helped me get access to whatever civilian profession they were in. From sate and federal workers/ law enforcement/ electricians/ finance consultants/ paralegals/ the list goes on and on. I don’t know if many other places where I would get to meet so many professions on a monthly basis. If civilian education is priority and you’re gonna stay in moms basement while you grind out some degrees, the reserves is awesome. You can walk out with a degree debt free by the time youre 23 if do things right

It really depends on what your current situation and what your goal is. If you're someone like me who was already in school at the time of enlistment and is working full time with good pay and wants a little extra each month, the reserves is the right choice. Now if you're someone who just graduated high school who doesn't know what they want to do or someone who's just working a dead beat minimum wage job but wants to have the opportunity to go to college to have the ability to get a better job, then active duty is the better route for you. Everyone is different and has different goals, you need to choose which path is the right path for you.

I completed 42 years, 3 months and 17 days of duty on my Navy Retirement. The bulk of that was Reserves punctuated by three tours of active duty. I've seen both the good and bad of Reserves and ACDU but do have the appellation USN (Ret.) after my name. The Reserves are fully integrated within the mission of the ACDU component. The Military figured out that it was more cost effective to have a cadre of trained reservists to fill jobs than keep some person on duty 24/7 that has nothing to do but play solitaire on their computer while waiting for the balloon to go up. I have made a wide diversity of "friends" in the reserves. One of my associates finished his Navy Career in the Brig as an E1. Another, retired as a four star admiral. Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, Jackie Cooper, James Stewart, Barry Goldwater, John F. Kennedy (among others) were all reservists. It is definitely something to consider.

I did 4 years active then another 17 mixed active/reserve with the Air National Guard. One of the greatest things about the Air Guard is that there are many opportunities to go on orders for different lengths of time (I did five years active on their counter drug team) but you have the flexibility to move back to traditional status (one weekend a month, two weeks “summer camp”) if you have another opportunity to pursue without having to wait months or years until an enlistment ends (I left the counter drug team to take a federal law enforcement position, just gave them a few weeks notice). The education benefits in the Guard are great (you can attend state schools for free for a certain number of credits every semester + GI Bill) and you may actually have more time to pursue studies vs active. Socially there is a lot less turnover in the reserves than AD. I was activated after 9/11 with a bunch of people I had been activated with for desert storm. In between we had been at each other’s weddings, graduations, bbqs ... At the end of the day it’s up to the individual to do their research and find the right fit for themselves, fortunately there is tons of info now available. I didn’t find out about the Air Guard until I was actually in basic training. Good luck to everybody going in and thank you in advance.

If you are financially struggling do not become a reservist, and understand that some units are extremely strict with extreme military bearing and other units are extremely relaxed. ALWAYS ASK IF YOU HAVE DELINQUENCIES. If your unit doesn't tell you they will try to kick you out of the Navy. If you are a young bachelor it is easier to be active duty than reservist. @@clerklerp8458 Why would you want to do infantry first? If doing basic things fits your personality then do it, but if not you will be wasting your time and will be bored out of your mind with repetition, having to follow guys who,are intellectually beneath you, and not to mention hurry up and wait. Two other jobs that you may find just as good but a bit more intriguing and may want to look into are, military intelligence and civil affairs. Just saying! Btw, I did 4 in USMC field artillery (84-88) and saw what the infantry had to do and it did not look fun at all or mentally challenging, just repetitive and learning to be miserable. Field artillery was just as boring after you learn all of the systems. Once I got out I joined the ANG where I did helicopter maintenance while I got my collage degree. Did that dir about 8 years, until I got bored and decided to apply to OCS. I wanted to do anything, but a chemical officer, which is what the Army gave me. You know, needs of the Army. I did that for another 8 years, and doing a tour in Iraq in 05 and getting out in 07, bc of BS unit politics, too much twiddling your thumbs, even as the reserve weekend HHD commander, at the regimental level. At the same time I worked as a state prison guard, where I retired from after 20 years with a pretty good pension. Always keep in mind that there are a lot of ways to do it, but alway try to do it in a way where it’s the most beneficial and with the least amount of resistance and effort in order to accomplish your long term goal and where you want to be at in your older years. I’ve seen/ heard of a lot of guys who go “balls to the wall” trying to appear to be tough guys, just to end up being sped out by the system after they get hurt and what not. Also, while serving may seem great and fun, just never forget that you are only going to be a number who will be quickly forgotten after you leave the organization. 🤷‍♂️

I was in the Army National Guard my entire career fo 22 years. I started off as a 45K Artillery Repair Mechanic, got out for 5 years and came back and became an 88M Truck Driver for Operation Iraqi Freedom 3 and ended up as a 42R Senior Musician. The upside was I didn't have to live in the Military 24/7 and was able to persue a civilian career in Law Enforcement. I now have the LEO Retirement and I'm waiting until I'm 59.5 years old before I can start collecting my National Guard Retirement which will be like getting my monthly drill pay again. The down side of the Guard is that I have to wait for my benefits instead of getting them immediately after 20 years and I get a fraction of what I would get retired from the Regular Army. A coworker at the Sheriff's Office retired from the Army, joined the Sheriff's Office, lived off his Army Money and banked all his Sheriff's money. He was able to "buy back" military time which increased his Sheriff's retirement. He had 1 million banked plus his second retirement. That is a benefit of going Regular instead of reserves.

One thing that sucks about guard/reserve is if you deploy your family is pretty much left in the dark. You don’t live on or near an installation with resources they’ll need. Same thing when you return from deployment. PT is also on your own time and completely up to you where as active it’s part of your work day. Promotions are tricky because if you choose certain MOS’s you can’t advance unless you apply, board, and are selected to be AGR and people stay in those positions until they hit 20 active years. You’re only option from there is to change your MOS and it can take years to get the school.

The biggest downside of the reserves is much less training even as far as understanding the military, not enough pay to live, and giving up your weekend every month for 20 years to retire when you are 59 1/2. The upside is it pays for some school for part time work as long as it has money. Another upside is that it is good if you absolutely need to serve locally.

I was active duty for my first enlistment......that was easy everything was there for you and if you have a question just as the guy to the left or right of you. 2nd enlistment was a little different. I went reserves. The hardest thing was to stay in shape, weight and height regulations. It was stressful because you’re trying to live your civilian life work your day job and go to school in their somewhere. Finding the time to workout out and stay in shape was difficult for me anyway. I was eating on the run and driving from place to place to place.work school work. That was my life. Drill weekends well honestly that was easy. What would suck sometimes is doing tasks on non drill days like do a PowerPoint presentation or whatever “homework” your unit tasks you to do before the next drill weekend. First off I couldn’t log in to X website because you don’t have a cac card reader and the passwords that you constantly have to keep changing on a monthly basis. Also trying to reach out to someone in your unit on a non drill day.......they are just as busy as you or 2. they know it’s you and don’t want to talk to you just yet. And 3 some people are just un reachable. Anyway, reserves has its place if youre currently a very active person , job and school and finding your place in the civilian world, you have to manage your time and you will need to stay in shape to meet the minimum standards of height and weight. Some drill days will be slow, the military is what you make of it so be prepared. If you’re thinking of joining and don’t really know what to do as far as going to school full time or you’re not really working full time and just want to do something different......go active duty. Either way whatever you choose to do.....its honorable.

In my opinion, based on what I heard from this video, and based on my active duty experience (4 years, single contract), I’d say just go active duty. Simplifies this whole thought process he’s trying to explain. If you’re not comfortable with full benefits and steady job with instant benefits when you get out, then go reserve. But you start that way, you’ll have to earn your dd214 or the form you get that shows discharge info. I don’t believe you ever get one through the reserves unless you have been chosen or chose to be “activated” for like over 90 days or something. You skip out on a lot if you just go and stay in the reserve component. But wouldn’t recommend active duty for any one that doesn’t want to leave home for years basically.

Please explain "Milking the system". From a Vet that fought the system for 5 years for 70% and still fight2ing with secondary conditions not credited for. In 1983 I had a severe ankle sprain and the HM2 didn't even enter it into my STR. Fighting the system is NOT milking the system! VA makes it an adversarial system as it seems to be VA against the Veteran!

Reserves can be a shit show sometimes. I’m a Corpsman who serves with a marine unit and I have no real Navy leadership. I’ve gone a year without pay in the past and I was stuck at E2 for almost 2 years because of a computer glitch. My NOSC was no help to me despite all the times I’ve been in there complaining. I’m in a UIC that “doesn’t exist” yet they still have me in it with no ability to correct it. Apparently I’m a one man unit??? It still takes about a month for people to realize that maybe I should get mustered and certified for my drill dates. Missed out on my first deployment because of that hot mess. Hoping to go active soon or I guess go blue side so I’m not forgotten about on my lonely green island.

It depends on the unit. I've seen more then though are up active units to disprove the elitist mentality of the active side. Also seen ate up reservists, but I've also seen plenty of high speed units from both. It's the unit and its leadership. Education and benefits are subjective. But it say you shouldn't go reserve is fairly bias.

As you get older the Guard and Reserves will get in the way of career responsibilities especially if your higher up in the civil service grades. My GS grade was much higher than my Guard rank. In the civil service I was a GS12 in the Guard I was a TSgt. BIG BIG difference. In the real world I out ranked the commander. It was ridiculous. I hated going on summer camp I lost allot of money. If your going to join the Reserves or National Guard and you don't have a regular job that takes up allot of time by all means go to a tougher tech school. But I was in a scenario where the Reserves was a huge pain in the ass. I was working a full 40 hour a week job and was also going to college at night and had study group on the weekend. The Reserves bitched at me because I was not studying for my job courses. Normally I would be studying but I was working 40 plus hours a week and going to college at night until at least 1030 at night then had to study until 2 or 3 in the morning. Their was no way I could work on these courses for the reserves. I was going to college on my dime and was trying to improve my quality of my full time life. The Reserve section chief badgered me every drill. Thank god I qualified to retire. I don't know how a younger person would have handled this. It was a nightmare. When not on drills or summer camp I focused on my college courses and graduated with a 3.85 GPA and finally got a good paying full time job. This is an instance where the Reserves are full of shit and not remotely accommodating to them it was all about the mission and nothing about me. I still enjoyed the military but I felt the Reserves did nothing but harass me.

The major plus of the Guard and Reserves is the health benefits. Having Tricare Reserve is huge!!!! You only have to pay $250 a month for you and your entire family; which can include parents if you are taking care of them. You are never going to find any healthcare insurance remotely close to that in the civilian sector; for a single person in the civilian sector that's 21years old is around 200-$313.

Well your Navy time counts towards federal time (retirement etc...). Federal job gets you 120 hrs of paid military leave (per fiscal year) which you can use for reserve AT or trips. Reserve pay could be used for fun money, like hookers and blow. You will have to give up one weekend a month but at least you pick where you want to serve and they cannot make you move. There is also the possibility of being mobilized, but that is dependent on what job/unit you serve with.

The experience of being a seabee, $22,000 severance check and went to DIT commercial dive school. I'm not doing bad at all now. Wouldn't change anything.

I picked up 2nd Class on the fourth time and 1st Class on the first time up as a reservist. I also deployed 8x as a reservist over 12 years vs active duty I never deployed once I begged to deploy. Maybe for you, it was a hobby but I made it a career and kept volunteering myself for deployments until I hit 20 years. I make more on the outside as an environmental engineer with a master's degree than I would have ever made on active duty.

Reserves is not a bad route if you’ve already done active duty time. It’s a great way to network and have at least some guaranteed pension/benefits upon retirement.

As a reservist I know a lot of active duty folks, I've been to many places over the years. I also know a lot of people from the civilian community though also, much more networking opportunities.
